2015 Oscar Nomination Predictions

The countdown to the Oscars is less than 24 hours away.

While some of the presumed nominees, and the precursors, seemed like a done deal in the fall, Oscar watchers will know for sure on Thursday morning when the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards are announced. 

Will the guilds inclusion of AMERICAN SNIPER and perceived snubs that came with the lack of BAFTA, Directors Guild and Producers Guild nominations for SELMA make any difference? What nominations will come out of left field?

The Academy expanded the Best Picture category for a possible 10 nominees with the intention of including big box-office hits that would help the show’s TV ratings. However, this year the race is dominated by specialty and independent labels with Gone Girl being the only contender with blockbuster status.

One thing is sure, this year’s race will have awards season fans biting their nails right up to Oscar Sunday, February 22.

For you die-hards getting up Thursday morning before dawn, Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced last week that actor Chris Pine, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, and directors Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams will announce the nominations in all 24 Oscar categories at a special two-part live news conference at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The Nominations Announcement is a live news conference where more than 400 media representatives, including WAMG, from around the world will be gathered.

At 5:30 a.m. PT, Cuarón and Abrams will announce the nominees in the following categories: Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Film Editing, Original Song, Production Design, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

At 5:38 a.m. PT, Pine and Boone Isaacs will take the stage to unveil the nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay and Best Picture.

Oscar First – The Academy To Announce Nominations In All 24 Categories LIVE on Thursday, Jan. 15

Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today that actor Chris Pine, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, and directors Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams, on Thursday, January 15, will announce the nominations in all 24 Oscar categories at a special two-part live news conference.

WAMG will again be there for the announcement and will be reporting from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

“Each of the three years we’ve produced the show, we have attempted to refresh elements of the process and the telecast,” said Zadan and Meron. “This year, we’re honored to start a new tradition that celebrates the contributions of all the nominees by announcing all 24 categories. We’re thrilled that a distinguished actor and two world-class film directors are part of the initial launch.”

At 5:30 a.m. PT, Cuarón and Abrams will announce the nominees in the following categories: Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Film Editing, Original Song, Production Design, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

“We’re delighted to have Chris, Alfonso and J.J. participate in the excitement of Nominations morning, which, for the first time, will highlight nominees in all categories,” said Boone Isaacs.  “This new approach enables the Academy to further recognize excellence across our entire industry and underscore the full spectrum of the arts and sciences of motion pictures.”

“We’re thrilled to have such exceptional talents present the nominations in a completely new format that furthers our mission and honors all of the artists who make movies,” said Dawn Hudson, Academy CEO.

The Nominations Announcement is a live news conference where more than 400 media representatives from around the world will be gathered.  The event will be broadcasted and streamed live on www.oscars.org/live.

Nominations information for all categories will be distributed simultaneously to news media in attendance and via the official Oscars website, www.oscar.com.

Pine’s starring role as Kirk in the 2009 feature “Star Trek” propelled him to worldwide prominence.  He reprised the character in the sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness.”  Pine’s other feature credits include “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” “Horrible Bosses 2” and “Into the Woods.”  Pine will next be seen in “Z for Zachariah,” due out later this year, and “The Finest Hours,” due out in 2016.

Cuarón is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker best known for his features “A Little Princess,” “Y Tu Mamá También,” “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” “Children of Men” and “Gravity.”  He most recently won Oscars® for directing and editing “Gravity” and received a Best Picture nomination as a producer on the film.  Cuarón also has earned an Original Screenplay nomination for “Y Tu Mamá También,” and Film Editing and Adapted Screenplay nominations for “Children of Men.”

Abrams is a director, screenwriter and producer whose credits include such feature films as “Mission: Impossible III,” “Star Trek,” “Super 8” and “Star Trek Into Darkness,” as well as such television series as “Lost,” “Fringe” and “Person of Interest.”  He won two Emmy Awards in 2005 for directing and executive producing “Lost.”  Abrams is currently directing “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” producing “Mission: Impossible 5,” and executive producing the series “Roadies” for Showtime and “Westworld” for HBO.

Oscars for outstanding film achievements of 2014 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and televised live on the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.  The Oscars, produced by Zadan and Meron, also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

Oscar Predictions – We Have A Horse Race

For the first time in many a blue moon, the eventual Best Picture winner hasn’t already been decided as in years past, but it’s beginning to feel as if a certain silent movie will take home the big enchilada. Frankly there were no films to feel passionate about in 2011 – no one taking sides, no one predicting months ago. And most of the presumed BP nominees were released in the spring and summer. The only things left to decide now are what will be the big surprises and the all important snubs. On Saturday, the Producers Guild announced THE ARTIST as their choice for Best Picture. The Directors Guild and the Screen Actors Guild announce next weekend.

Below is a look at our Oscar predictions in the big categories to be announced Tuesday morning. With the rule changes again in Best Picture, we’ve decided on 7 films. Rules: “The pictures receiving the highest number of votes shall become the nominations for final voting for the Best Picture award. There may not be more than ten nor fewer than five nominations; however, no picture shall be nominated that receives less than five percent of the total votes cast.” Don’t be surprised if AMPAS President Tom Sherak and Actress Jennifer Lawrence only announce 5. (We can always hope.)

Some of us are sticking to our guns that a film should not be eligible for both Best Picture and Best Animated Feature, therefore, dismissing all this baloney about HUGO being nominated for Best Picture, placing it strictly within the Animated category. Best Director, however, is still fair game!

NAACP Image Award Nominates Two From Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry is getting all sorts of praise by the NAACP Image Awards, giving him two best film nominations for his films “TYLER PERRY’S WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO?” and “FOR COLORED GIRLS”.

The LA TIMES reports:

Janet Jackson was nominated for best actress and Jill Scott for supporting actress for “Why Did I Get Married Too?” Michael Ealy for supporting actor and Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad and Whoopi Goldberg for supporting actress in “For Colored Girls.”

Perry, who won the NAACP Chairman’s Award last year, was also nominated  for his screenplay for “Why Did I Get Married Too?” and for best director for “For Colored Girls.”

On the TV front, “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” was nominated for best comedy series,  with David Mann being nominated for best actor in a comedy series for “Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns” and LaVan Davis  nominated in the same category for “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.”

“THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT”, “JUST WRIGHT”, and “THE BOOK OF ELI” are also competing for best film of 2010.

The 61st Emmy Noms are  here and some  Oscar, Grammy, and Tony winners have been invited for the first time to the dance this year.  While HBO’s series ‘True Blood’ was glaringly left off the list for Best TV Drama, it’s brilliant mini-series ‘Grey Gardens’ received a stellar 17 nominations!

This bodes very well for ‘The Dark Knight’ – a huge boost and sure to please all the fanboys…its almost assured now of an Oscar Best Picture nom. on January 22nd. We’ll see how the directors branch feels with the DGAÂ  nominations on Thursday.

FYI: Attention ‘Wall-E’ fans! Turns out that it’s impossible  for Andrew Stanton to pop up on the list of Directors Guild of America nominations this Thursday. Animated features aren’t eligible.

The 20th annual Producers Guild Awards will be held on January 24th at the Hollywood Palladium.
