Review: NEVER LET ME GO

Kathy H., Ruth, and Tommy (Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightly, and Andrew Garfield) were seemingly normal kids in an English Boarding School in the 1950’s. The school was not the richest, but the kids seemed not to put too much care into materialistic things. They were very well taken care of: Fed a very healthy diet and vitamins, every scratch and fall taken care of immediately by a physician, and provided a well rounded, spectacular education. As they grew older, they realized their ever rushing fate… to become organ donors for the rest of society, and before they reached 30 years of age, reach “completion”, or death. Once accepting of their fate, two must now race against the clock to see if their love can grant them an extension, so that they might be granted a couple more years together.

I have to say, I was not ready for the depressive tone of this film when I went in. I warn you, that unless you are ready for a thinker, or something that will leave you somewhat saddened, then maybe you should wait to see this one… save it for a rainy day. In any event, it is still one to watch.

Carey Mulligan was simply stunning in her performance. She was believably vulnerable and strong at the same time. Her character has to deal with a great deal of love, betrayal, and acceptance, yet she does it with grace and ease. She was meant to play the role of Kathy H. Keira Knightly was perfect to play Ruth as well. Her character was more of the rebellious one, filled with spite. Still, you could see through her to the good, and Knightly portrayed this brilliantly! Andrew Garfield played the innocent and starry-eyed Tommy quite well. Bashful and shy, yet compassionate… Garfield played his character to a tee.

This was a great movie if you don’t over think it. Obviously the children were brainwashed into thinking that this was their destiny: To die so that the rest of society will live. The only thing that I question is that if they were smart enough to question if true love could get them an extension, and to contemplate their purpose, why did they not think of running. Yes, they were micro-chipped, but if they were fighting so hard for an extension, why did  no one even contemplate the thought of running? Yes, I know they were brainwashed… but if they could think of ways to gain an extension, they had to think of ways to run… just saying.

Still, the fact that Oscar buzz is already surrounding this film is no surprise. Overall, it really is an incredible film. It makes you think about the direction society is going, and about our future as a human race.

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Have a look at the intriguing trailer for NEVER LET ME GO, based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel of the same name. In 2005, the LA Times reviewed the book, calling it a story of, “the alienation of society from the individual.”

Mark Romanek Begins Filming of ‘Never Let Me Go’

mark-romanek

Director Mark Romanek has not had a feature film released since ‘One Hour Photo’ back in 2002.   The director of such visionary music videos as Michael Jackson’s Scream, Madonna’s Bedtime Stories, and Nine Inch Nails’ Perfect Drug, Romanek was believed to be the “next big thing” after ‘One Hour Photo’ released to rave reviews.

Now, seven years later, Romanek has begun filming his next film.   ‘Never Let Me Go’ stars Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Charlotte Rampling, Sally Hawkins, Nathalie Richard and Andrea Riseborough and is written by Danny Boyle-go-to-guy Alex Garland (’28 Days Later’ and ‘Sunshine’).

“We are delighted to be shooting this special project, which Alex Garland first brought to us before the book’s publication in 2005,” said Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA Films. “We could not be happier to have assembled such a remarkable cast and crew for this extraordinary story.”

The film tells the coming-of-age story of three English children and the growing up they encounter at a boarding school.   It is based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro.

“From the moment I finished the novel, it became my dream to film it. Ishiguro’s conception is so daring — so eerie and beautiful. Alex Garland’s adaptation is sensitive and precise. The cast is perfect. The crew, superb. I am deeply grateful to be working with DNA Films, Film4, and my friends at Fox Searchlight on this exceptional project,” said Romanek.

‘Never Let Me Go’ has a nine-week shooting schedule in the UK.   It is set for release some time next year.

Keira Knightley to Star in Mark Romanek Thriller

keira-knightley

I don’t know which news is more important here, the fact that Keira Knightley has signed on to star in the new thriller from Mark Romanek or the mere fact that Romanek is directing a new film. Â  The director of ‘One Hour Photo’ was attached to helm the new ‘Wolf Man’ film, but left due to budget disagreements. Â  Now, he and Knightley are teaming up to make ‘Never Let Me Go’, a sci-fi thriller for Fox Searchlight.

The story revolves around  a trio who grew up in a boarding school with no contact or knowledge of the outside world until they discover they are clones grown for the sole purpose of organ donation.

Alex Garland (’28 Days Later…’ and ‘Sunshine’) wrote the screenplay, and, other than that, the story doesn’t sound interesting at all. Â  It sounds way too much like ‘The Island’, but, with Garland behind the screenplay and Romanek behind the camera, I’m sure the film will have its fair share of surprises.

The film begins production in April in England.
