DOG SOLDIERS’ Neil Marshall’s New Horror Movie THE LAIR To Start Filming Spring 2021

Highland Film Group announced today the company has come aboard to handle worldwide sales for the new horror action thriller The Lair written, directed, and produced by Neil Marshall (20th Century Fox’s Dog Soldiers, Lionsgate’s The Descent, The Reckoning, Lionsgate’s Hellboy). Casting is currently underway with plans to start principal photography in Spring 2021. Highland Film Group will introduce the project to buyers at the upcoming virtual American Film Market.

The Lair is produced by Neil Marshall / Scarlett Productions Ltd.

Going back to Marshall’s creature horror roots beloved worldwide, The Lair tells the terrifying tale about a Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair who is on her final flight mission when her jet is shot down over one of the most dangerous rebel strongholds of Afghanistan. She finds refuge in an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made biological weapons – half human, half alien and hungry for human flesh – are awakened. Sinclair barely escapes but unknowingly, tracks the creatures known as Ravagers back to a US army base.

“If The Reckoning was a gothic drama in testament to the power and resilience of women, then The Lair is my true return to full blooded horror and intense genre action in the style of Dog Soldiers, The Descent and Doomsday.  I’m making something scary as hell, pulse pounding and great fun. This is a crowd pleaser. An adrenaline pumping roller-coaster ride. Spectacular and loud; inspired by classic genre movies like Aliens, Predator and The Thing and their incredible use of practical creature FX. Featuring a new breed of screen terror, The Lair will be a snarling, ravenous beast of a movie. I’m going to get my hands bloody making this one!” said Marshall.

Listen to Marshall talking about DOG SOLDIERS.

The Lair has the potential to become a cult classic that showcases Neil’s extraordinary work we have already enjoyed in his hits such as The Descent and Dog Soldiers. The worldwide distributors are seeking powerful classic genre films with excellent execution from an expert’s hands. The Lair ticks all the boxes,” said Highland Film Group CEO Arianne Fraser. “Neil is at the top of his game when he is directing evocative creature films such as The Lair. When we read the script, we knew immediately that this would be another one of his signature event movies.  We cannot wait for him to get to work,” continued Highland Film Group COO Delphine Perrier.

Highland Film Group’s diversified production and sales slate includes: Mark Neveldine’s Panama starring Cole Hauser and Mel Gibson; Randall Emmett’s Wash Me In The River starring Robert De Niro, John Malkovich, and Taylor Kitsch; Randall Emmett’s Midnight in the Switchgrass starring Bruce Willis, Megan Fox, and Colson ‘Machine Gun Kelly’ Baker; Andrew Baird’s One Way starring Colson ‘Machine Gun Kelly’ Baker and Travis Fimmel; Alec Baldwin’s Rust; Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s Becky starring Lulu Wilson, Kevin James, and Joel McHale released in the US June 2020; Infamous starring Bella Thorne and Jake Manley, released in the US June 2020; Andrew Baird’s Zone 414 starring Guy Pearce, Matilda Lutz, and Travis Fimmel; John D. Aleph Records will release the TALES OF HALLOWEEN – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack exclusively on iTunes on October 23, 2015.

The film is a horror anthology featuring original music by Joseph Bishara (THE CONJURING), Michael Sean Colin (KILLJOY GOES TO HELL), Christopher Drake (BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS video games), Christian Henson (THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE), Bobby Johnston (WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY), Jimmy Psycho (The Jimmy Psycho Experiment), Sean Spillane (JUG FACE), Edwin Wendler (UNNATURAL), and Austin Wintory (DARK SUMMER).

The film features main titles by legendary composer Lalo Schifrin (THE AMITYVILLE HORROR), whose son Ryan Schifrin directed one of the segments.

“This film is our love letter to the holiday of Halloween. And to have a main title from the man that wrote the Academy Award nominated score for THE AMITYVILLE HORROR is setting the bar even higher,” said Ryan. “What makes TALES OF HALLOWEEN really special is that you have one generation of legendary icons like John Landis, Joe Dante, Lalo Schifrin, and Drew Struzan all coming together to help the new generation of filmmakers.”

Eleven directors, renowned for their contribution to the horror movie genre, have joined forces to create a series of interconnected stories, each with a unique Halloween theme. Ten short films have been woven together by a shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only to terrorize unsuspecting residents.

Ghosts, ghouls, monsters, and the devil delight in terrorizing unsuspecting residents of a suburban neighborhood on Halloween night.

CENTURION Red Band Trailer

Courtesy of Hulu, you can now check out the red-band trailer for Neil Marshall’s CENTURION online. Marshall –director of DOOMSDAY, THE DESCENT and DOG SOLDIERS– brings us this epic new period war flick is not one to be missed, starring Michael Fassbender and Dominic West. CENTURION is set to open in theaters on August 27, 2010.

Plot: A splinter group of Roman soldiers fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack.

SXSW Review: CENTURION

CENTURION is an epic story told on an intimate scale. It’s a war movie focused on the character-driven story, but doesn’t sacrifice the expectation of action. Written and directed by Neil Marshall, CENTURION delivers on multiple fronts, supplying moviegoers with a variety of weapons in its arsenal, intended to ensure a wider appeal than simply the violence-seeking male market.

Neil Marshall (DOG SOLDIERS, THE DESCENT) is known as a fan favorite filmmaker, delivering excellent action, thrills and solid stories. He’s taken us deep into the dark and terrifying depths of the cavernous unknown and now he takes us on a journey back in time, back into the Roman era. CENTURION is the story of a small group of Roman soldiers caught behind enemy lines, the only survivors of a vast legion of unstoppable Roman forces obliterated by a devastating ambush in the hills of Scotland.

Michael Fassbender (INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS) plays Quintus Dias, a second in command Roman officer who inherits control of the handful of survivors as they struggle to survive in harsh, unfamiliar terrain, ruled by the unpredictable combat nature of the Picts of Scotland. When the Pict King Gorlacon (Ulrich Thomsen) captures the Roman General Virilius (Dominic West) Quintus Dias leads his men on a suicide rescue mission into the heart of Pict territory.

Marshall clearly did his homework on this picture, delving into the details of the ancient time and place, rewarding his more demanding audiences with detail and texture. His Roman characters are allowed to speak with subtly varied accents, properly representing the fact that the Roman legions consisted of soldiers from all across the vast empire. On the other hand, his actors portraying the Picts speak a more appropriately strong and common accent as well as Gaelic when necessary for mood.

Initially, CENTURION delves into the intricacies of the Roman legionary forces, giving the audience a sense of its structure, a sense of its inner workings and hierarchy. The Roman army fought confidently with a traditional battle strategy. The Romans fought with honor, or so they believed. Unfortunately for them, the Picts saw fighting a war to defend their land and culture as less a question of honor, resulting in the guerilla tactics they employed. These unconventional tactics are what allowed the Picts to repeatedly fend off the Roman invaders.

One of the most epic scenes in CENTURION is the ambush of the Roman legion, perpetrated with the assistance of a Pict scout called Etain, played by Olga Kurylenko, who tricked the Romans into believing she was willing to lead them into victory over the Picts because her people had betrayed her. This scene depicts the utter terror and confusion these guerilla forces could inflict on the unprepared Roman soldiers. With little struggle and time, the entire legion is wiped out on a grand scale, leaving only the handful of soldiers who survived by mistake. Marshall’s story is inspired by the legend of General Virilus’ Ninth Legion, ordered to march into the Pict land and wipe them from the land, but the entire legion mysteriously vanished.

Michael Fassbender apparently can do no wrong, as his performance in CENTURION becomes yet another positive notch in his belt of acting achievements. Fassbender gives Quintus Dias a level of silent moral conflict that balances the character with his heroic status, able to kick some serious ass in combat. Meanwhile, Olga Kurylenko’s silent performance of the Pict tracker Etain, minus a tongue forcibly removed, screams badass female warrior with a vengeance. Convincing fight sequences that could make any guy watch in lustful awe and terror enhance Kurylennko’s performance.

CENTURION is a film that celebrates the strong female character as much as the Roman legend, featuring Axelle Carolyn as the equally formidable female Pict warrior Aeron. Equal to these performances is the gallant portrayal on General Virilus by Dominic West (300, PUNISHER: WAR ZONE). Quintus Dias meets Drusilla (Rachael Stirling) at one point, a Pict outcast who becomes a love interest for him during his efforts to survive.

The finely tuned editing of CENTURION is accompanied by intriguing costume work and cinematography that captures the rugged and beautiful bleakness of the snow-covered Scottish hills. The action itself is an effective combination of choppy closely shot edits, giving just enough chaos and claustrophobia to be convincing but not enough to induce motion sickness or a sense of displacement amidst the action. Audiences will be pleased with the mix of realism and style, while the sensationalist-seeking audiences should appreciate the acceptably ramped up level of blood and graphic violence.

Overall, CENTURION is a satisfying piece of historical cinema that offers action, drama and even a bit of controlled romance, even though its use is primarily a vehicle for the film’s ending. Fans of historical cinema should be pleased with the care taken in the story telling, while those seeking mere entertainment should find themselves satisfied with a well-made period war film.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

CENTURION Trailer Unleashes a Little Hell

Anyone else remember how kick-ass the opening battle sequence in GLADIATOR was?   Remember the Roman soldiers taking on the Germanic barbarians in those gray woods, the flaming bombs shattering against trees and raining liquid fire?   Yeah, I’m totally doing the Chris Farley thing here, but that was pretty damn cool.

How about a full length feature film with that same style?   I say if anyone can pull it off it’s Neil Marshall, and, if this new trailer for CENTURION, courtesy of IGN, is any indication, that concept may be hitting our theaters very soon.   What’s more, it shows McNulty (Dominic West) and Lt. Archie Hicox (Michael Fassbender) kicking some serious Pict tail.

Check it out right here:

Granted, it might not be as epic as GLADIATOR.   That’s what happens when you’ve got the guy who did THE DESCENT and DOOMSDAY at the helm instead of the guy who did ALIEN or BLADE RUNNER.   Nonetheless, CENTURION looks to feature some very cool action, and you know with Marshall at the wheel, this ship isn’t going to go anywhere near the PG-13 territory.   Thoughts of another KING ARTHUR can be dispelled right, friggin’ now.

You can also head over to IGN for the HD version of the trailer.   CENTURION is set to hit UK theaters in April.   No US release date has been announced as of yet.

Peter Berg Could Be Out of the DUNE Remake Business

dune

If you know me, then you know I’m all about Peter Berg and most of his projects.   Everything from VERY BAD THINGS (which brings a smile to my face) to FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (which brings a tear to my eye) serves as factors for why I have no problem with Berg helming a big-budget remake of something like DUNE.   Let’s just put it this way, a DUNE remake is going to happen.   It’s just a matter of having the right person for the job.

So, it pains me today to bring news from Pajiba that Berg has, evidently, left the project.

Here is a direct quote from the site:

Peter Berg completely dropped the project a few weeks ago — his Film 44 production company backed out, and now Paramount is scrambling to find a new director.

There is no word why Berg left the project, though one has to wonder if this has anything to do with Columbia wanting to fast-track a HANCOCK sequel.

On the choosing of a new director side of things, Paramount is running into problems on two fronts.   First, they have to find a helmer who can handle Joshua Zetumer’s 200+-page screenplay for south of $175 million.   Second, Paramount is seeking a director who knows the DUNE universe and who has a passion for the project.   So far, according to Pajiba, two names have been bandied about: Neill Blomkamp and Neil Marshall.   Marshall, evidently, is the front runner.   Needless to say, the studio is somewhat concerned with Marshall, whose only hit so far is THE DESCENT.

With no casting underway and no, official release date set, the future of DUNE could be very bleak, or, optimistically, a long way off.   We will bring more as soon as official word comes down.

Marshall and Raimi Up for a 3-D BURST

neil marshall

Neil Marshall and Sam Raimi are coming together to throw a little 3-D spontaneous combustion our way.  Lionsgate announced on Friday that they picked up distribution rights to BURST 3-D, a horror film that is to be produced by Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and directed by DESCENT and DOOMSDAY director Marshall.

Written by Gary Dauberman(BLOODMONKEY), BURST 3-D centers on a group of travelers who are stranded in a blizzard and find themselves stalked by an evil force that causes them to spontaneously combust.

Says Mike Paseornek, President of Motion Picture Production for Lionsgate:

We are thrilled to be working again with Neil Marshall, a modern master of horror, suspense and action. With Neil at the helm of BURST 3-D, horror fans are guaranteed one of the most terrifying and innovative experiences of their moviegoing lives.

Says Ghost House partner Robert Taper:

Mike Paseornek and the Lionsgate team are leaders in the horror space. This, along with the opportunity to work closely with Joe again, were motivating factors in our desire to partner with Lionsgate on BURST 3-D. We hope to continue the partnership with Lionsgate on other projects like this.

Neil Marshall’s ‘Centurion’ Behind the Scenes Video

centurion

Say what you want about it, Neil Marshall’s ‘Doomsday’ was a badass film.   In my eyes, the guy is 3 for 3, and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us with ‘Centurion.’

Set in AD 117, ‘Centurion’ tells the story of the legendary Roman Ninth Legion.   After getting decimated in a guerrilla attack behind enemy lines, the surviving members must fight their way back to their homeland.

The fine people over at Rotten Tomatoes got the chance to go on set, and they have provided us with this sweet, little video.

Enjoy:

The film stars Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko, and Michael Fassbender.   It is slated to release sometime later this year.

Trailer for ‘The Descent: Part 2’

descent2movie

Here’s the first trailer for ‘The Descent: Part 2’ from first-time helmer Jon Harris. Not everyone was a fan of the first movie by Neil Marshall, but the sequel surprisingly looks like it just may be more of the same, only done a bit better? As always, it’s tough to tell for sure by the trailer, but I didn’t see anything in it that made me think “blah”. What are your first impressions?
