Christoph Waltz To Play Gorbachev, Michael Douglas As Reagan In Mike Newell’s REYKJAVIK

Director Mike Newell (HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE, GREAT EXPECTATIONS) has found the man who will sport the purple stained birthmark on his head while playing the last leader of the Soviet Communist Party for his new film. Academy-Award winner Christoph Waltz has been cast as Mikhail Gorbachev opposite Academy-Award winner Michael Douglas as Ronald Reagan in REYKJAVIK. Waltz is starring in the upcoming DJANGO UNCHAINED from director Quentin Tarantino while Douglas is headlining another based-on-a-true-story pic as Liberace in Steven Soderbergh’s “Behind The Candelabra” to air on HBO.

Filming on REYKJAVIK will begin in March 2013 in Reykjavik, Iceland and Studio Babelsberg, Germany. The script is from Kevin Hood (BECOMING JANE) with Ridley Scott producing.

“The film will offer the viewer a unique look into two larger than life figures who served as the catalysts for one of the most defining moments in our history, the end of the Cold War,” said Scott.

The upcoming drama is about the nuclear arms talks in 1986 between President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Reagan had labeled the Soviet Union an “evil empire,” and less than a year after the summit Reagan would challenge Gorbachev to “tear down this wall” in Berlin. Gorbachev initiated changes known as ‘perestroika’ and ‘glasnost’ which melted the rigid Soviet system and liberated 15 republics of the Soviet Union to become independent states, thus ending the existence of the USSR in December 1991.

REYKJAVIK will be produced by Headline Pictures, Scott Free Productions, Participant Media and Mark Sennet Productions.

2nd PRINCE OF PERSIA Trailer Gets the Last Word

You ever notice in these big budget, Summer blockbuster, while armies of thousands are battling to the death, the lead and the love interest seem to have their own battle going on?  They fight to see who gets the last word in.  Annoying in real life.  Cute in the movies.

This is on full display in the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced, Mike Newell-directed PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME, and the new trailer incorporates as much “last word fighting” between Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton as it possibly can.  It even gets to the point where Gyllenhaal wants the last word, he has to have it, but, alas, no, actual, words come out of his mouth.  It also incorporates a lot of CG-laden footage we’ve already seen, just edited a bit differently.  Plus, we get a little more Sir Ben Kingsley in this one, who is, judging from the goatee, the villain of the piece.

Check it out for yourself right here:

Evidently, whoever controls time can control the world.  That’s what the new trailer for PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME, courtesy of  Myspace, would have you believe.  I don’t know.  Marty McFly didn’t seem like he was in control of jack, and those damned Terminators never seemed to get it right, either.

Regardless, the new trailer for the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced adaptation is out, and it looks like a Summer blockbuster.  Lots of stunts, lots of explosions, lots of swordplay, lots of CGI, and loads of that “swooshing” sound.  I love that “swooshing” sound.  It lets me know full well this thing is going to make buckets of cash and probably set itself up nicely for a sequel.

But, don’t take my word for it.  Check it out for yourself:

‘Goblet of Fire’ Director in Talks for ‘Lone Ranger’

lone-ranger

Mike Newell, who directed ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ and currently directing ‘Prince of Persia,’ is in talks to head up Walt Disney’s adaptation of ‘The Lone Ranger.’Â   The screenplay was written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, the duo behind the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ trilogy.

The film will deal with the origins of the character.   A group of Texas Rangers are hunting a gang led by Butch Cavendish.   Ambushed by the gang, only one Ranger is left alive.   He is found and nursed back to health by an Indian, Tonto.   After recovering, the Ranger dons a mask and rides his white horse, Silver, to bring the gang to justice.

Johnny Depp is already attached to the film in the role of Tonto.   No one has been set to fill the Lone Ranger role.

What do you think?   Is Newell a good choice to serve as director on the film?   Who should play the Lone Ranger?   Should it be a younger actor or someone established?   Is Johnny Depp a good choice to play Tonto?   Let us know by commenting below!

Very First Look At ‘Prince of Persia’

A paparazzi site known as Just Jared has scored the very first images of Jake Gyllenhaal all decked out in his Prince of Persia getup.

‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ is currently filming in Morocco.   It was recently announced that the Jerry Bruckheimer produced video game adaptation had its release date pushed back from Summer 2009 to May 28, 2010.   This was evidently due to the nature of the post-production special effects the film will incorporate.

The film is being directed by Mike Newell and also stars Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina.   It is being released by Disney.
