RiffTrax Live With THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION on August 15th and 20th

Following the sidesplitting kick-off to the 2019 “RiffTrax Live” series with the wonderfully awful rubber monster B-movie “Octaman,” and the Casper Van Dien sword-and-laser swashbuckling space odyssey “Star Raiders” in June, RiffTrax’s Michael J. NelsonKevin Murphy and Bill Corbett (of Mystery Science Theater 3000® fame) are back in cinemas in August with “RiffTrax Live: Giant Spider Invasion.” One of the most popular MST3K movies ever, comedy fans won’t want to miss this epic riff on the 1975 science fiction horror cult classic presented by RiffTrax and Fathom Events.

Thursday, August 15, 2019 at 8 p.m. ET (live) / 7 p.m. CT (live) / 7 p.m. MT (tape delayed) / 8 p.m. PT (tape delayed) and rebroadcast on Tuesday, August 20 at 7:30 p.m. local time.

Tickets for “RiffTrax Live: 2019” titles can be purchased at www.fathomevents.com/series/rifftrax-live and participating theater box offices. For a complete list of theater locations, visit the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change). SYNOPSIS: There’s a monster in Wisconsin, and it’s going to slowly, VERY slowly, strike TERROR INTO YOUR HEART! Sure your grandma could outrun it, but TERROR is more fun! When a fiery meteor lands in the woods, strange things begin to happen in this small Wisconsin town — even weirder than usual, and that’s a pretty high bar! While the townspeople are picked off by spiders of varying sizes, two esteemed scientists ramble around the countryside in a late model sedan, where they find friendship, romance and a big mechanical spider built on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis! Starring Alan Hale Jr, the (Skipper from “Gilligan’s Island”), Barbara Hale (“Perry Mason,” and no relation to the Skipper) and Robert Easton, who’s been in more movies than a No Smoking disclaimer, The Giant Spider Invasion” explodes across the screen in a pristine new digital transfer.

“Into the weenie mobile, weenie man away!”

Okay, you have a big decision to make this weekend: do you seen RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD at midnight at The Hi-Pointe Friday and MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE at The Tivoli midnight on Saturday, or do you see MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE at The Tivoli midnight Friday and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD at midnight at The Hi-Pointe on Saturday? Either way, there’s a couple of fun midnight shows in St. Louis this weekend (read my take on the RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD screening HERE)

If you’re unacquainted with the origin of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE, a cult cable series on the Sci-Fi Channel, fret not. Think of Mad Magazine meets a live-action version of Beavis & Butthead, and you’re on your way to the moon. Instead of having Burger World’s Dickheads of the Month unspooling wisecracks over Ratt and Warrant video clips, you have two androids, Gypsy and Crow, and their human pal, Michael J Nelson, unspooling wisecracks over an endless stream of  Z-grade films. They are held captive aboard a bone-shaped space vessel by an evil scientist, Dr Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulie who also co-wrote the script), who plans to conquer the world by exposing Earthlings to celluloid crap and, in the movie, the choice of deconstruction is the 1954 sci-fi schlocker, THIS ISLAND EARTH (which is actually a good, if mildly cheesy, film – I’ve shown it at Super-8 Movie Madness). No household names with eye-candy looks, no costly visual trickery and certainly not much of a plot, MST-3K has less to do with science-fiction than the cannibalization of popular culture; their gleeful nitpicks are peppered with a litany of pop culture references from The Addams Family and TOP GUN, to Kate Moss, the Matsushita Corporation and even William Shatner. The namechecking may alienate some and the jokes are of a hit-and-miss variety but when it does hit, it hurts.
