Holidays Are for Lovers: SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE Returns to U.S. Theaters December 2nd and 5th

Twenty-five years ago, moviegoers fell in love with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan as two strangers searching for a soulmate in “Sleepless in Seattle.” As the romantic-comedy by director Nora Ephron marks its silver anniversary, Fathom Events and Sony Pictures Entertainment are bringing the enchanting film back to cinemas nationwide for two days only.

Tickets to “Sleepless in Seattle” are now available at www.FathomEvents.comor at participating theater box offices.

The Fathom Spotlight Series will present the 1993 box-office smash – along with a brand-new introduction by Meg Ryan and producer Gary Foster – in nearly 400 movie theaters nationwide for two days only: Sunday, December 2, at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., and Wednesday, December 5, at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (all local times).

On its release, Roger Ebert praised “Sleepless in Seattle” as a film “so warm and gentle I smiled the whole way through,” and audiences couldn’t get enough of the second of four on-screen pairings of Ryan and Hanks. (1990’s “Joe Versus the Volcano,” “You’ve Got Mail” in 1998, and Ryan’s directorial debut “Ithaca” in 2015.) Filled with the strains of hopelessly romantic popular hits, “Sleepless in Seattle” was one of the five top-grossing films of 1993 and has also been named by the American Film Institute as one of the 10 most romantic movies ever made.

It’s the tale of two romantic souls destined to be together but kept apart by fate. After the death of his wife, Sam Baldwin (Hanks) is trapped in grief, and moves from Chicago to Seattle with his 8-year-old son Jonah (Ross Malinger, in a scene-stealing role). Unsure of how to help his father get through the pain, Jonah calls a national radio show to seek the advice of a psychologist, immediately attracting the attention of millions of people, including reporter Annie Reed (Ryan). She can’t stop thinking about Sam’s predicament, even though she’s already engaged to Walter (Bill Pullman). Urged on by her best friend and editor (Rosie O’Donnell), Annie proposes a plan to meet Sam at the top of the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day … but no one is sure the meeting will happen.

“We couldn’t let 2018 come to an end without honoring one of the truly great romantic comedies as it celebrates its 25th anniversary – and we’re doubly excited to have the help of Meg Ryan and Gary Foster, whose talents were so critical to making this film a success,” said Tom Lucas, Fathom Events VP of Studio Relations.

Tristar Pictures presents “Sleepless in Seattle” with executive producers Lynda Obst and Patrick Crowley. The story is by Jeff Arch with screenplay by Nora Ephron and David S. Ward and Jeff Arch. The film was produced by Gary Foster and directed by Nora Ephron. “Sleepless in Seattle” is available on Blu-ray™DVD and Digital.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan star in Nora Ephron’s wonderfully romantic comedy about two people drawn together by destiny. Hanks stars as Sam Baldwin, a widowed father who, thanks to the wiles of his worried son, becomes a reluctant guest on a radio call-in show. He’s an instant hit with thousands of female listeners who deluge his Seattle home with letters of comfort. Meanwhile, inspired in equal parts by Sam’s story and by classic Hollywood romance, writer Annie Reed (Ryan) becomes convinced that it’s her destiny to meet Sam. There are just two problems: Annie’s engaged to someone else and Sam doesn’t know yet that they’re made for each other. Co-starring Rosie O’Donnell, Rita Wilson and Rob Reiner.

Your Weekly Source for the Newest Releases to Blu-Ray

The late, great Blake Edwards’ 10 — starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek — gets immortalized on Blu-Ray. Two films go from silver screen to Blu-Ray… Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER; and Bette Davis stars in ALL ABOUT EVE, just in time for it’s 60th anniversary. Disney’s animated classic ALICE IN WONDERLAND comes out of the vault for a special 60th anniversary treatment. Sticking with the anniversary trend, HIGHLANDER reaches it’s 25th (tentatively) with a special gift set, boxed with HIGHLANDER 2. LET ME IN fills the role as this week’s primary horror release, with HATCHET 2 showing up to the party a day late. My indie Blu-Ray pick of the week goes to the indie sci-fi/drama MONSTERS, a low-budget film which made huge waves on the festival circuit, is being released as a special edition.

Going further back is a film noir called THE PROWLER and a pair of pre-code 30’s-era films. (For ya young’uns, that’s before men and women were required to sleep in separate beds on the big screen.) Tribeca Review: ‘Serious Moonlight’

serious-moonlight

I was looking forward to this film since Cheryl Hines told me about it at the Adrienne Shelly Foundation Gala I attended back in October. I got a chance to speak briefly with her, and she talked about this passion project that she directed from a script written by Adrienne Shelly before she was killed. The film stars Meg Ryan, as Louise, a crossed lover who goes psycho (actually Misery) and duct tapes her cheating husband, played by Timothy Hutton, to a chair in their home. She refuses to let him go until he agrees to work on their marriage rather than run off with his current girlfriend, played by Kristen Bell.

For me, the star of the film was Justin Long who plays the gardener who decides to Rob the house when he discovers Timothy Hutton duct-taped to a toilet. Yes, I know I said chair before. He is moved to the bathroom after he attempts to escape. Long offers some sympathetic words of wisdom to Hutton while still pulling off the dumb criminal act. Hutton and Ryan are good as the leads, and Kristen Bell is always fun to watch. Louise’s attempts at winning her husband back are often funny and the film has some great moments between the two. The ending is fairly predictable but it is still a pretty fun movie. One thing that is surprising is the coarse language. Aside from a few F-bombs, this could have easily been PG-13 and therefore picked up much quicker and for more money by a studio.

Overall, Cheryl Hines did a pretty good job directing her first feature. The cast is fun to watch and the film is entertaining. It could be a good date night film, especially for older couples.
