New KICK-ASS Poster Can Do Two Things At Once

kickass poster

The marketing for KICK-ASS is amping it up something fierce.  We’ve just recently had these character posters, then this teaser trailer hit yesterday, and, today, the film’s Myspace page gives us the poster you see above.  It, essentially tells us two things about this movie.  This isn’t going to be your typical, run-of-the-mill, PG-13, superhero movie.  What this is going to be is an in-your-face, kick-ass action movie whose main characters just happen to be superheros.

KICK-ASS is set to (not) fly into theaters on April 16th, 2010.

These Are Some KICK-ASS Character Posters

kickass poster all

It certainly doesn’t bother me that a film gets marketed by way of character posters, if A) those character posters are both sweet-looking and even the slightest bit innovative and B) if those posters meld together like Voltron and create one, massively epic banner.  Thus is the case with KICK-ASS, the latest comic book adaptation from Mark Millar and directed by Matthew Vaughn.  The come to us today, courtesy of IGN.

Check ’em all out in glorious ginormity:

What do you think?  Which one is your favorite?  Does it hurt to tell you that one of these character is being played by Nicolas Cage?  I’ll give you a hint, it’s not the Red Mist.

KICK-ASS hits theaters on April 16th, 2010.

New SHERLOCK HOLMES Poster Hits

sherlock holmes poster header

By deductive reasoning, I have determined that the new poster for SHERLOCK HOLMES, courtesy of Cinematical, was not shot in super slow motion.   Granted, much of what Guy Ritchie’s new take on the old story has to offer seems to benefit in a blatant disregard for normal speed, but I don’t see that in this poster.   Of course, I could be wrong.   They aren’t moving all that much.

Deduce for yourselves:

Like the trailer for the film, which, in turn, gives way to the overall feel of the film, this new poster is fun, complex, and very boisterous.   But, what more do you want from the director of SNATCH and the stars of IRON MAN and SKY CAPTAIN?   This ain’t Shakespeare, you know.

SHERLOCK HOLMES hits theaters (presumabely in super slow mo) on Christmas Day.

Three Studios Vying to ‘Kick-Ass’

kick-ass

It’s a three-way dance to see which studio is the most ‘Kick-Ass.’   According to Risky Biz Blog, Lionsgate, Paramount, and Universal are each vying to be the independently made film about a super hero teen.   Early word of the violence in the Matthew Vaughn-directed film made many studios squeamish about picking up the film.   However, footage shown at this year’s Comic Con has sparked some heavy buzz amongst comic book fans.   After screenings were held for potential buyers, most of the studios who had turned away from the film initially gained a certain level of interest.

Based on the comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., the film stars Aaron Johnson as a high school geek who decides to turn himself into a real-life crimefighter.   Things get hairy once he runs into actual criminals with actual weapons.   Nicolas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Mark Strong co-star.

The film was initially dealing with Sony Pictures, but dealings fell through when the studio and the creators couldn’t agree on the age of the film’s leads.   Sony wanted to raise the age of the film’s lead female to that of an older teenager.   After this, Vaughn and company decided to self-finance the film with the hopes of picking up a buyer after the film was completed.

We should be getting word within the next few days which of the above studios will come out on top.   With movies like ‘Punisher: War Zone,’ ‘Gamer,’ and the ‘Crank’ series, Lionsgate certainly has no qualms with putting out an R-rated action extravaganza.   However, you have to think established studios like Paramount and Universal will be able to strong-arm the smaller competition if they choose to.

Paramount’s got the inside track going in the comic book realm with films like ‘Iron Man,’ ‘Transformers,’ and the upcoming slate of Marvel adaptations.   On the other hand, Paramount isn’t really one to put much backing into an R-rated fan movie like ‘Kick-Ass.’   Despite dealing with Paramount on ‘Stardust,’ they really aren’t the best course of action for Vaughn to take with his film.

This leaves Universal, which has had major, R-rated releases in the past few years like ‘Wanted,’ ‘Public Enemies,’ and the Judd Apatow slate of movies.   Universal also proved with last year’s ‘The Strangers’ that it is a studio that has no problem with taking a smaller budget film and pushing it into a tentpole position.   This isn’t to say Universal is going to be the film to come out on top of this buyers competition, but it is certainly the studio that would treat the film’s release the way it should.

There’s something to be said for hand-drawn movie posters.   While this isn’t exactly a movie poster you’ll be seeing in your local cineplex, it’s still mighty fine viewing.   This is the Comic Con exclusive poster for ‘Kick-Ass,’ which will be having its panel on Thursday.

If you’re one of the lucky ones who got in to the show, you can have your ‘Kick-Ass’ poster signed by some kick-ass people.   Director Matthew Vaughn and artist John Romita, Jr. will be on hand between 3:15 – 4:00 PM signing autographs before the panel begins at 5:45.   We’ll be sure to bring you whatever news comes out of the panel, which will surely have some footage from the film, as well.

New ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Stills

sherlock-holmes5

Warner Brothers has released 10 production stills from Guy Ritchie’s new adaptation on ‘Sherlock Holmes.’ Â  The film, starring Robert Downey, Jr. as the violin-playing, pipe-smoking detective, and Jude Law, as Dr. Watson, will put the mystery-solving duo into high adventure. Â  Judging from these still, it looks like there is going to be much more fighting than fans of the novels are generally used to.

William Hurt Joins Ridley Scott’s ‘Robin Hood’ Film

william-hurt

I remember back when this project was first being bandied about. Â  It was called ‘Nottingham,’ it was the Robin Hood story told from the perspective of the Sheriff as if Robin Hood were a villain, it was going to star Russell Crowe, be directed by Ridley Scott, and it was going to be awesome. Â  Now, it just sounds like it’s getting turned into another retread of the same old story.

Anyway, William Hurt has joined the cast of this same old story. Â  He will be playing William Marchall, the Earl of Pembroke, who has been described as the “greatest knight that ever lived.” Â  Whoever said that clearly didn’t see Heath Ledger in ‘A Knight’s Tale.’ Â  He rocked that shit.

Hurt joins a cast that already includes Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong, Kevin Durand, Scott Grimes, and Alan Doyle. Â  The film, which is as yet untitled, is currently filming in the UK. Â  It is set for a May 14th, 2010 release.

ShoWest is going on in Vegas this week, and I’m sure we will have updates galore throughout.   Latino Review got the above image for the teaser poster for Guy Ritchie’s ‘Sherlock Holmes.’

‘Sherlock Holmes’ comes out on December 25th.

Cate Blanchett Official for ‘Robin Hood’

cate-blanchett

This is just an update to a previous article we ran, where we gave you the rumor that Cate Blanchett was going to star in Ridley Scott’s ‘Robin Hood’, previously titled ‘Nottingham’.   Word came down today that this news is official.   Cate Blanchett will, in fact, be playing Maid Marian in the new ‘Robin Hood’.

Actor Mark Strong recently spoke with the UK’s The Telegraph where he revealed who may be stepping into Sienna Miller’s role of Maid Marian in the new Ridley Scott film ‘Nottingham’.

“I think Cate Blanchett is set to take the Maid Marian part,” said Strong, who is expected to play Sir Guy of Gisbourne. “She is a wonderful actress and it would make it a much classier film if she was in it.”

Miller was dropped from the project, because she was apparently too slim and youthful for the part.

What do you think?   Is Blanchett a good choice for the part?   Will this end up being a good movie?   Is Sienna Miller really too slim?   Let us now by commenting below!
