SHE WILL Trailer Brings Nightmarish Scares – From Executive Producer Dario Argento, Starring Alice Krige

A superb, sly horror-drama debut delivering otherworldly feminist vengeance.”
– Jessica Kiang, VARIETY

“Bold and bewitching. Between the haunting score and Colbert’s effortless style, She Will…casts an atmospheric spell through tactile, dreamy visuals.”
– Meagan Navarro, BLOODY DISGUSTING

IFC Midnight is proud to present SHE WILL, the psychological horror directed by Charlotte Colbert, making her directorial debut. Executive produced by horror legend Dario Argento (Suspiria), SHE WILL won the Golden Leopard for Best First Film at the Locarno Film Festival and screened at notable festivals around the world including the London Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, Sitges and Thessaloniki.

IFC Midnight will open SHE WILL in select theaters and on demand on Friday, July 15, 2022, with Shudder launching the title on October 14, 2022.

SHE WILL is a gothic-tinged drama about a declining movie star, Veronica Ghent (Alice Krige) who after a difficult surgery, goes to a healing retreat in rural Scotland with her young nurse Desi (Kota Eberhardt). With her own identity in doubt, Veronica starts to confront past traumas endured on movie sets. The two women develop an unlikely bond as mysterious natural of the wilderness give Veronica the powerto enact revenge.

The score is from Clint Mansell (Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain (for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe), Smokin’ Aces, The Wrestler, Black Swan (nominated for a Grammy Award), Loving Vincent and High Rise.)

An inventive and provocative directorial debut, with #MeToo resonance, SHE WILL is a timely feminist critique, identifying Charlotte Colbert as one of horror’s most exciting new filmmaking voices.

The director said of her movie, “It’s the type of project that’s always seemed to have a will and life of its own. It was amazing to see the different characters that congregated in the story. It seemed to attract a specific type of wandering soul who was interested, not necessarily in the occult, but more in the boundaries or the frontiers of where reality lies; the edge, just beyond what’s visible.”

FATHER STU – Review

Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg) in Columbia Pictures’ FATHER STU.

Now here’s a new studio film release that seems a perfect fit for this time of year. After a bone-chilling winter, spring has finally, though rather slowly, arrived. For many folks, and nature-enthusiasts, it’s a time of rebirth and renewal. In the latter category, and in the wake of the big “health events”, lots of folks are considering a “do-over” or even a “fresh start”, mainly switching their line of work and professions. This aforementioned new flick has one of the most startling, and radical, “reboots” of one person’s life. A real-life, as this is based on a real person. Oh, and with Easter a few days away, the story will certainly resonate with its focus on faith. That’s because this tale is about Stuart Long, a boxer who becomes the priest known and loved as FATHER STU.

This bio actually begins many years before either profession, as pre-teen Stuart lipsyncs and dances to Elvis in his squalid living room, much to the chagrin of his bitter, boozing, chain-smoking pop, Bill (Mel Gibson). Flash forward to the late 1980s as adult Stuart (Mark Wahlberg), upon the recommendation of his doctor and encouraged by his worrying mother Kathleen (Jacki Weaver) finally puts away his boxing gloves. He stuns Mum with his new career plan: he’ll leave Montana and move to Hollywood to become a “big star”. But “tinsel-Town” doesn’t rush to put him on screen, so he works the meat counter at a grocery store. There he’s smitten by a beautiful shopper. She rebuffs his advances, but he finds a flier for her church that she’s posted on the store’s bulletin board, Though he’s not religious, and not a catholic, Stuart shows up for services and reconnects with Carmen (Teresa Ruiz). While courting her, he also looks up his long-estranged pop, who abandoned him and Kathleen to work construction in California. Then one night after “drowning his sorrows”, Stuart is almost fatally injured in a horrific traffic accident. After helping to nurse him back to health, Carmen finally takes their relationship to the “next level”. Later a very somber Stuart tells her that they “need to talk”. But rather than a proposal, he tells her that he wants to become a priest. But the road to the altar is fraught with spiritual and mental challenges, which are nothing compared to the new physical one that threatens to block his dreams of service to the church.

Wahlberg is in full “endearing average Joe” mode for his take on the much-beloved padre. Unlike his recent UNCHARTED he’s a bit unprepared for life’s curves and for the roadblocks to his goals (stardom, Carmen), but his charm and screen charisma have us rooting for him even as he “gets in over his head” since watching him “treading water” is often compelling. Plus Wahlberg can artistically handle all of Stuart’s story arcs (plural, as I’ll explain later). At the other extreme, Gibson is in his “grizzled, raging curmudgeon” lane, pushing his family and the audience aside, but still giving us a glimmer of hope for Bill’s redemption. Weaver’s the ideal working-class mother, protective of her boy, but not reluctant to challenge him on his often “out there” choices. Ruiz is more than the tale’s “object of affection” as she throws up a steep wall to thwart Stuart’s desires while gradually warming to the stubborn but sincere interloper of her ‘sacred sanctuary”. Plus she’s a very expressive reactor to Stuart’s radical religious interpretations while being baffled and more than a little hurt by his “calling”. And kudos to the casting of screen vet Malcolm McDowell who brings some much-needed gravitas to the role of the church hierarchy that makes Stuart jump through many hoops before allowing him into the seminary.

Rosalind Ross makes her feature film directing and screenwriting debut with this faith-focused saga that should appeal to its intended loyal audiences, though they may be as surprised as I was with the many “F-bombs” scattered about (hence the “R” rating). This may be a leap forward for such films in order to break out of their “specialty” category and “cross over” to more mainstream cinema audiences. Unfortunately, this film plays like a basic cable telefilm, though with more “star wattage”. Actually more like several “overcoming the odds thru suffering” telefilms as Stuart’s many hurtles almost feel like a “dogpile” as each act serves up another “helping of hardship”. Unlike last year’s JOE BELL, we do get to see Wahlberg offering inspirational lectures (the former film always cutaway) and his energy and sincerity shine through. Perhaps because of all these “story beats” much of the relationship drama is scrimped on, especially Bill’s mellowing and the very complex dynamic with Carmen. Maybe a cable or streaming miniseries could’ve “fleshed out” the character studies. Much like the recent DOG, the marketers are selling this as a sweet comedy, but if audiences can handle the truly “tough stuff” (that accident is really excruciating) they’ll enjoy learning about his remarkable fellow. As for “movie-bio” buffs, they may feel the message is often muted in the saga of FATHER STU.

Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie Star In First Trailer For BOMBSHELL – Fox News Scandal

Starring Academy Award® winner Charlize Theron (Megyn Kelly), Academy Award® winner Nicole Kidman (Gretchen Carlson), Academy Award® nominee John Lithgow and Academy Award® nominee Margot Robbie (Kayla Pospisil), based on the real scandal, BOMBSHELL is a revealing look inside the most powerful and controversial media empire of all time; Fox News, and the explosive story of the women who brought down the infamous man who created it. Directed by Emmy® Award winner Jay Roach and written by Academy Award® winner Charles Randolph.

BOMBSHELL also stars Emmy® Award winner Kate McKinnon, Golden Globe® nominee Connie Britton, Emmy® Award winner Mark Duplass, Emmy® Award nominee Rob Delaney, Golden Globe® nominee Malcolm McDowell and Academy Award® winner Allison Janney.

Here are some companion pieces to consider before BOMBSHELL opens this December.

Showtime recently aired their seven-part limited series “The Loudest Voice” about Roger Ailes, the founder of Fox News. It focused on the past decade in which Ailes arguably became the Republican Party’s de facto leader, and the sexual harassment accusations that brought his career to an end. The film starred Russell Crowe, Naomi Watts, and Sienna Miller.

Crowe was on Stephen Colbert to discuss his role.

Additionally the documentary “Divide And Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes”. The film charted the origin, rise and downfall of Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes.

Variously called a bulldog, a kingmaker, and the Ernest Hemingway of campaign advisors, Ailes was the wizard of Oz. But he collected talent like dolls, and became consumed by paranoia about his own personal security. “I think Roger thought he could control the little genie in the bottle,” said former Fox News personality Glenn Beck. “But he couldn’t.”

The son of a factory foreman, Ailes had a hand in political campaigns in almost every state in the country. He was a key advisor over the last half century to presidents Nixon, Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He was drawn to winners, and loved to be in their sphere—whether a small-town councilman in Cold Spring, New York, or the president of the United States. When President Obama called him “the most powerful man in media” he basked in the glow, and posed smiling alongside the Democratic president he had done everything to undermine.

Ailes hated what he called “the New York elite.” He was fueled by his resentments, and he bullied the people of Cold Spring – where he had a weekend house – as much as he bullied the people in his professional domain at Fox. He lived his life in fear of bleeding to death, say his longtime friends. Some say it helped him to better understand the fears of others, which he monetized on television, inaugurating the age of “anger TV.

He capitalized on other instincts too, insisting that Fox newswomen wear short, tight dresses, and displayed themselves as explicitly as possible. “We’re getting the same girls to dance around shinier poles,” he proudly said to the New York Times.

Ailes fashioned Fox News into a ratings powerhouse, with more viewers than all its direct competitors, combined. But he was forced out by the Murdoch family in 2016, amid multiple allegations of sexual harassment. He was eventually locked out of his own building, unable to collect his belongings. Ailes died in May 2017 at the age of 77.

http://www.magpictures.com/divideandconquer/watch-at-home/

The documentary was directed and produced by Alexis Bloom.

When asked about her project Bloom was asked:

Alexis, just how influential is Roger Ailes in our current political climate? He’s been the architect of modern presidential campaigns and some would say the person most responsible for Donald Trump becoming president. Does the specter of Roger Ailes still loom large? Is his influence still felt, even though he resigned in July 2016 and died in May 2017?

AB: Certainly he paved the way for someone like Trump, though I don’t know that Trump was his first choice. He certainly had the relationship with Trump and the history with him whereby he could pivot very quickly to Trump when it became obvious that Jeb Bush wasn’t going to make it. And he did put Trump on every Fox show, and a weekly call in – specifically talking about politics. That was telling in and of itself. Roger had these very deep roots in the Republican Party and could have supported or sunk any number of candidates. I think that sort of shaping is key. Yes, his influence is about Donald Trump, but it’s about much more than that. It’s about the tea party and flame throwing in political life, about making that viable and legitimate and profitable. He popularized flame-throwing political TV, and that has degraded political life.

BOMBSHELL’s Jay Roach has previously directed TRUMBO starring Bryan Cranston and HBO’s GAME CHANGE (2012) starring Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin, Woody Harrelson, and Ed Harris as well as RECOUNT (2008) about the 2000 United States presidential election – Bush v Gore.

My personal favorite of Roach’s is MYSTERY, ALASKA from 1999. This film stars Russell Crowe, Hank Azaria, Mary McCormack, Lolita Davidovich, Ron Eldard, Colm Meaney, Maury Chaykin and Burt Reynolds. The story of an amateur ice hockey team, from the fictional small-town of Mystery, that plays an exhibition game against the New York Rangers, is a delightful gem and one to catch on a Saturday afternoon.

BOMBSHELL opens in theaters December 2019.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will celebrate the life and career of filmmaker Stanley Kubrick on Wednesday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Hosted by Malcolm McDowell, the evening features film clips and personal remembrances by his friends and collaborators, including Paul Mazursky, Ryan O’Neal and Matthew Modine. The salute is presented in association with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), leading off its retrospective screening series “2012: A Kubrick Odyssey,” and in conjunction with its exhibition “Stanley Kubrick.”

Kubrick, a 13-time Academy Award®–nominated director, writer and producer – who also won an Oscar® for Special Visual Effects for “2001: A Space Odyssey” – was one of the world’s most visually innovative, thematically operatic and intellectually challenging filmmakers. His movies, such as “Lolita,” “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” “A Clockwork Orange,” “Barry Lyndon,” “The Shining,” “Full Metal Jacket” and “Eyes Wide Shut,” have consistently defied audiences’ expectations and expanded the boundaries of visual storytelling with wit, style, humor and intelligence.

Tickets for “An Academy Salute to Stanley Kubrick” are sold out; however, a standby line will form on the day of the event, and standby numbers will be assigned starting at approximately 5:30 p.m. The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Ticketed seating is unreserved. For more information and guest updates, call (310) 247-3600 or visit oscars.org.

The evening also launches the Academy’s satellite exhibition “Stanley Kubrick: The Ultimate Trip” in the Academy’s Grand Lobby Gallery, where it will be on view through March 3, 2013. The installation illuminates Kubrick’s creative process through film posters, photographs, advertising trailers, production design drawings, screenplay drafts, correspondence and other original artifacts.

Exhibition materials are drawn from the collections of the Stanley Kubrick Archive, the Mark E. Blunck Collection and the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library, in collaboration with the Deutsches Filmmuseum in Frankfurt am Main, and LACMA. Viewing hours for “Stanley Kubrick: The Ultimate Trip” are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on weekends from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
