Listen To The BLACK ADAM Theme From Composer Lorne Balfe

WaterTower Music has released the first music to be heard from the upcoming New Line Cinema action adventure “Black Adam,” starring Dwayne Johnson. The first-ever feature film to explore the story of the uncompromising DC antihero comes to the big screen under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra (“Jungle Cruise”). The Black Adam Theme (from “Black Adam”) by highly respected Grammy Award-winning and Emmy-nominated composer Lorne Balfe (“Mission Impossible: Fallout,” “The Lego Batman Movie,” “Black Widow”) has just been released – in advance of the film and soundtrack release. “Black Adam” smashes into theaters and IMAX internationally beginning 19 October 2022, and in North America on October 21, 2022.

Balfe’s vision for the music of Black Adam encompasses an exploration into the back stories that define the characters. The composer commented on that approach. “It was exciting to get into the Black Adam theme, and I really wanted to capture his essence as the DC comic book world’s anti-hero. We had a large brass section across the score to give the weight and power of the main character’s past, which I balanced out with high tempo, more melodic sounds to give the audience that more familiar heroic feel. We also experimented a lot with choir on this project, which was able to contribute a unique and classical sound that ties in nicely with Black Adam’s story.”

Consistently receiving accolades for his musical compositions, he received critical acclaim for his score in the most successful film of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Writer/Director Christopher McQuarrie’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT (Paramount Pictures) and has been announced as the composer of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 & 8.

Other notable credits include TOP GUN: MAVERICK (Paramount), BLACK WIDOW (Disney/Marvel), AMBULANCE (Universal), JUNGLELAND (Paramount), THE LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE (Warner Bros), and the Oscar nominated film THE FLORIDA PROJECT (A24). Coming up Lorne’s work will be heard in ARGYLLE, directed by Matthew Vaughn.

In addition to his work with Christopher McQuarrie, Lorne has worked with many of the most prestigious directors in the industry, including Christopher Nolan, Ron Howard, Michael Bay, Cate Shortland, Ang Lee, Christophe Waltz, Jerry Bruckheimer, Sean Baker, and Chris McKay.

Earlier this month Lady Gaga revealed “Hold My Hand” as the first single to be released from the soundtrack. Produced by Gaga and BloodPop© with additional production by Benjamin Rice, the soaring anthem received widespread critical acclaim right after its release with Billboard declaring “Lady Gaga soars with “Hold My Hand,” and Vanity Fair raved the song “catapults her [Gaga] into next year’s Oscar race.”

“I Ain’t Worried” by GRAMMY® nominated band OneRepublic followed. Produced by Ryan Tedder, Brent Kutzle, Simon Oscroft and Tyler Spry, OneRepublic will perform “I Ain’t Worried” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (NBC, 11:35/10:35c), tonight May 27th.

With a combination of classics from the original film, new music, and score, the album reflects Top Gun’s past, present, and future all at once. It boasts instantly recognizable cuts such as the theme song “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins, while Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller recorded a show-stopping live rendition of “Great Balls of Fire” showcased in the film and included on the record.

Plus, it features original score tracks by the movie’s composers—Lorne Balfe, Harold Faltermeyer and Academy® Award winner Lady Gaga and multiple Academy® Award winner Hans Zimmer.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer added, “This album continues the musical legacy that the original Top Gun ignited back in 1986. We are so thrilled to have Lady Gaga and OneRepublic lend their artistry towards putting a modern spin on the already iconic and beloved soundtrack.”

Making waves already, “Hold My Hand” was written for the motion picture and is featured throughout the film. The motion picture version of “Hold My Hand” features additional production and score by Lorne Balfe and Academy Award-winner Hans Zimmer. It also marks Gaga’s return to writing and producing original music for film, after the success of 2018’s A Star is Born soundtrack that earned Gaga an Academy Award, four GRAMMYs®, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, and Critics’ Choice Award.

Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick visits Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) after more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators. Maverick is where he belongs –pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Sink Your Teeth Into Trailer For Sean Ellis’s Werewolf Horror Film THE CURSED Howling Into Theaters February 18 With Score By Lorne Balfe

Ready for growing hair, sprouting teeth, and howling at the moon that is a Werewolf horror movie?

Director Sean Ellis’ gothic thriller The Cursed will be released in theaters on February 18, 2022. Written and helmed by Sean Ellis, The Cursed stars Boyd Holbrook (The Sandman, The Fugitive, Logan), Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone, True Detective, Above Suspicion) and Alistair Petrie (Sex Education, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Night Manager) in a reimagining of the werewolf legend.

Ellis said: “The Cursed was born from the desire to reimagine and update the Werewolf legend for a modern day audience. I wanted to play on the known folklore of the legend and give it a fresh approach to the cliched story devices that have been copied from the original 1941 film, The Wolf Man.”

In the late 1800s, a once-peaceful remote country village is under attack—but by who or what, no one knows.  Villagers spread rumors of a cursed land, supernatural forces, and even demonic creatures, as the disappearances and killings continue.  Pathologist John McBride arrives to investigate the danger, only to discover something much deeper and more sinister than he ever could have imagined.

Released by LD Entertainment, the film is produced by Ellis, Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon, and executive produced by Alison Semenza and Jacob Yakob. Ellis also shot the film. Formerly titled Eight for Silver, the film premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.

Filmmaker Sean Ellis commented, “Sundance is always an incredible place to showcase your work. In the time that has followed that valuable experience, we took the opportunity to invigorate the film with an updated score by Lorne Balfe; we changed much of the CGI and decided to put back much of the original in-camera effects. We also elevated elements of the story that pay tribute to the incredible multitude of layers that live within the horror genre.”

LD’s Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon said, “We set out to make a genre film with an incredibly talented filmmaker. Sean Ellis has created a story that is so much more than that: it’s timely, scary as hell, and most importantly unique. We are thrilled for people to finally see Sean’s striking vision on the big screen.”

Lorne Balfe’s JUNGLELAND Original Motion Picture Score Available Now

The Original Motion Picture Score for JUNGLELAND by Award winning composer Lorne Balfe is available now.

Lorne Balfe (Mission Impossible: Fallout (INTERVIEW), The Lego Batman Movie, Churchill, HBO’s His Dark Materials) is a Grammy Award winning, EMMY and BAFTA nominated composer. Whether on an impossible mission, the heartbreak of the Queen, the perils of the cape crusade or the soul of a genius, Lorne Balfe creates a musical voice that reflects the characters and the stories that embody them. Originally from Inverness, Scotland, Balfe has created music in virtually all genres and for all visual media with projects ranging from major studio to independent films, tentpole video game franchises, beloved animated feature films, critically acclaimed television series, and documentary features.

Produced by Romulus Entertainment in association with Scott Free Productions and Big Red Films, and directed and co-written by Max Winkler (Flower), JUNGLELAND is a love story between two brothers whose bond is tested as they hustle and scrape towards their slice of the American Dream. Stanley (Charlie Hunnam, “Sons of Anarchy”) and Lion (Jack O’Connell, Unbroken) are brothers struggling to stay relevant in the underground world of bare-knuckle boxing. When Stanley fails to pay back a dangerous crime boss (Jonathan Majors, “Lovecraft Country”), they’re forced to deliver an unexpected traveler (Jessica Barden, “The End of the F***ing World”) as they journey across the country for a high stakes fighting tournament. While Stanley trains Lion for the fight of his life, a series of events threaten to tear the brothers apart, but their love for one another and belief in a better life keep them going in this gripping drama that proves the family pulls no punches.

Lorne Balfe says,

“I wanted the score of Jungleland to reflect the way the characters see themselves. In our early conversations, I focused on conveying aspiration as timeless and complicated, which is why he shied away from anything that felt too modern or flat — acoustic guitars, anything synth. We wanted to use instruments that felt regal, that demanded your respect. The style of music that would play in a dreamer like Stanley Kaminski’s head.
The style he would believe he and his brother Lion were owed. Climbing in and out of boarded up windows to their foreclosed palace, clocking in and out at the factory job, making their way from the cramped Italian kitchen to a windowless basement.”

Director Max Wrinkler says,

“We hoped to create a processional theme that was bigger and richer than their circumstances appeared to be on the surface. Stanley saw himself and Lion as kings, even if no one else did, so why not have a score that matched that? In those blue sky discussions, Lorne and I spoke endlessly about Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Tallis, and my personal favorite William Byrd. Music that was made to be played in royal courts. Music that was equal parts comical as well as profoundly sad and mournful. With these inspirations in mind, we assembled a 32 piece brass and woodwind band in Vienna to record a score that reflected the nobility of boxing and approached Stanley and Lion’s world with a formal appreciation. Queensbury rules. We wanted to introduce a sense of civility and humanity to the fray. We favored fugal horns, oboes, and strings to orchestrate dreams and hope beyond boundaries — the longing and heartbreak of it — and the brothers’ complete, but somehow still-searching, love for one another.”

Composer Lorne Balfe Discusses MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, The Game Awards And SIX UNDERGROUND

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, released during the summer of 2018, found Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also joined the cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.

The film, which had a worldwide haul of $791,017,452, delivered the franchise’s largest three-day opening back in July with $61.5 million. (Box Office Mojo). The film is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and live-streaming.

The score was composed by Lorne Balfe. In addition to the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, Balfe’s music has been heard these past few years with GEOSTORM, 12 STRONG, PACIFIC RIM UPRISING and Michael Bay’s upcoming film SIX UNDERGROUND. Composer of video games “Call of Duty: Warfare II,” and “FIFA 19”, Balfe was the musical director for The Game Awards in December.

I recently caught up with the Emmy-nominated composer (and father) who has been creating explosive, yet thoughtful musical worlds for audiences and fans of TV, films, video games and award shows.

WAMG: The last time we spoke was in 2015 for the film TERMINATOR: GENISYS and boy have you been busy.

Lorne Balfe: If I’m not doing movies, I’m having children, so I’m basically busy all the time. (laughs)

WAMG: I watched the Game Awards – how was it to be the show’s musical director? https://youtu.be/SHt3FyE-VIQ

LB: It’s a different part of the brain, that’s for sure, during awards ceremonies. You have to think of the bigger picture. I loved it. I worked with Geoff (Keighley) maybe seven years ago and we spoke about a montage for the show and it ended up being perfect timing. I slowly eased into being the musical director on the show. Instead of just one I ended up doing five pieces of music. We’re building up to next year so we’ll be a bit more comfortable with it.

WAMG: The opening was so awesome and the ratings were staggering. According to Variety, “the 2018 show numbers didn’t just increase, they leapt, up 128% to over 26.2 million global livestreams.” Those are mind-boggling numbers!

LB: I’m going to take credit for that (laughs). It shows you what the future is and how the industry is. I was wracking my brain for weeks trying to figure out how to open the show and I went with people who are at the forefront for composing for video games. They are a new breed, while getting some familiar faces there who had worked on classic games. Thankfully I have Harry Gregson-Williams and Hans Zimmer’s phone numbers and it worked out well. It was a great opening and legitimate and music-wise, for me, it was to thank the gaming community.

WAMG: It was really cool as well as unique to see the music and scores from the games being performed on the show.

LB: It’s always been in the shadow of movies and that’s why I wanted to try the musical set pieces, which is way bigger than what you get at the Oscars. When I’m composing for a film now, I’m always hearing about video games and the music. It’s a total reversal. And you look at the viewer numbers and shows it’s no longer a niche.

WAMG: 26 million viewers streaming a live awards show proves that.

LB: If I had known that at the time I probably would have had an accident (laughs).

WAMG:  When you were working on TERMINATOR GENISYS, I asked you, “As you were writing the score did you ever stop and think, I am composing for a TERMINATOR film!” You replied, “No and the weirdest thing is once I started, and it happened so quickly, that if I’d spent any time thinking about that, I probably would have had a heart attack and panicked. I wouldn’t have gotten a single note written.”

https://www.wearemoviegeeks.com/2015/07/composer-lorne-balfe-talks-score-for-terminator-genisys/

Now I have to ask you the same thing about MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT. Did of you have a holy crap moment where you go, I’m composing for a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie as well as collaborating with director Christopher McQuarrie.

LB: Before you start the only real reaction you have to composing for a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film is simply “f**k”. I remember going to watch the first one twice in the cinema and the whole franchise has been part of my movie development. You have to kind of forget about what it is that you’re composing for because if you don’t, it overwhelms you. It’s one of those rare dreams that comes true. There are not that many franchises now days and with Chris, who wrote THE USUAL SUSPECTS, he’s an amazing filmmaker and you’re getting to work with Tom Cruise who is the last of the movie stars.

Global Premiere of ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ at Palais de Chaillot on July 12, 2018 in Paris, France.

WAMG: How do include Lalo Schifrin’s iconic theme and what was the discussion with Christopher McQuarrie? I love the heavy percussion that you use, not only in this film but as well as 13 HOURS, 12 STRONG, and dark and Ethan Hunt’s theme.

LB: I’m a failed percussionist. (Laughs). I love percussionists and working with musicians. I always think rhythmically when writing far more than melodies or harmonies, it’s just how my brain works.

WAMG: Speaking about your MI score, congratulations on your nomination from the Seattle Film Critics http://seattlefilmcritics.com/2018/12/10/the-favourite-leads-the-2018-seattle-film-critics-society-nominations/

LB: A lot of musicians put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the score. It’s always great for the team and with MISSION we had 30 recording days and sessions and we’re very happy with the nomination.

WAMG: Plus you were awarded an Emmy-nomination for “Outstanding Main Title theme” for GENIUS.

LB: I always try to work on a couple documentaries a year. GENIUS was one of those projects that I loved doing – it was great to delve into the worlds of Picasso and Einstein. It was great to be invited into their worlds and trying to create a soundtrack, a voice for them was nearly impossible. We can’t tell what goes on in their heads, but it’s always a great journey composing for these shows.

WAMG: In March of 2016, I interviewed Apollo astronaut Gene Cernan about the documentary THE LAST MAN ON THE MOON. It was a thrill talking to him and watching the film, and your fantastic score captured what it was to be an astronaut, the space race, and literally the final man to walk on the Moon.

https://www.wearemoviegeeks.com/2016/03/apollo-17-commander-capt-gene-cernan-discusses-being-the-last-man-on-the-moon/

LB: To me, I wanted to try to give some respect to him and his colleagues because a lot of their journeys have been forgotten about. There was such a rush for the space race but then they just got put aside. That’s how I always looked at it. The sacrifice that they all made and it’s something none of can imagine doing. When writing for it I treated it as if it was a Western and the astronauts were the new generation of Cowboy discovering new land.

WAMG: Speaking of franchises, you also worked on PACIFIC RIM UPRISING. Ramin Djawadi’s score on the original was terrific but what you did with the music, especially the Jaegers theme, was so great.

LB: It’s always a little difficult with a franchise, and a sequel, but it was so much fun! Fans are pretty loyal and expect to hear some of the same music. PACIFIC RIM UPRISING was a new story and thematically you didn’t need to have them too connected. You can’t go wrong with Robots and Space.

WAMG: With going between different mediums of TV, film and video games over these past few years, has you approach changed to composing?

LB: The only thing that’s changed has been the way I work. It’s much slower now and the hours I spend are more focused. I’m more comfortable now with knowing there are really no rules where before I was worried on what I was trying to say musically. I’m more relaxed now when trying to tell the story and the filmmaking process.

WAMG: As with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, there are vocals in the “Mission” music cue. The choir takes the theme and gives it a unique twist.

LB: It’s also having fun with it I think. We teased the audience throughout the whole film with that main theme and Chris always wanted for the ending sequence to have a loyal version of it. Having the choir sing the “Mission Impossible” theme in Latin was the cherry on the cake. It goes to the “Spinal Tap” school of thinking. If you go ten, you can go to eleven.

https://lalalandrecords.com/mission-impossible-fallout-2-cd-set/

WAMG: What’s coming up next for you?

LB: I’m working with Michael Bay on his new film SIX UNDERGROUND with Ryan Reynolds. I’m just at the beginning stages of it too.

SIX UNDERGROUND is directed by Michael Bay (Transformers) and will star Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool). The film, produced by Skydance Media and Netflix, is targeted for worldwide release in 2019 on Netflix. The action film is based on an original idea from writers and executive producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, best known for their irreverent work on Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will produce Six Underground along with Bay.

WAMG: I can’t wait for that! I love Michael Bay films!

LB:  I can’t wait! His movies are one of the reasons I got into composing for films. It’s the same with Jerry Bruckheimer. Every time I saw his name at the beginning of a film, you knew you were going to have a blast. I had the privilege of working with Jerry on GEOSTORM and 12 STRONG. And now working with Michael again after 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI, you sit there and see the most visually impressive cinematic action scenes – it’s an honor to write for them.

WAMG: With those themes in 12 STRONG and 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI, it has to be a solemn experience to compose music for this genre.

LB: 13 HOURS was a very personal story for Michael because he wanted to show and respect those who have gone to war. Musically it’s a challenge because you don’t want to go over the top patriotic. You have to create a more internal soundtrack to each soldier’s story. It’s always difficult with a true story – you can’t belittle it.

Lorne Balfe’s Score For THE LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE Available February 3 On CD/Digital

Txtd-DOM-Final-Rated-1sht-LEGOBM

WaterTower Music has announced the February 3 CD and digital release of the soundtrack to the new animated adventure “The LEGO® Batman Movie,” one week before the film opens in theatres on February 10. The collection features new music from DNCE, Alex Aiono, Patrick Stump, Oh, Hush! feat. Will Arnett and Jeff Lewis, Kirsten Arian, Justin Tranter, and more. The album also includes 16 of the film’s score cues by Grammy-winning composer Lorne Balfe, and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) on drums.

The film’s director Chris McKay describes Balfe as “one of the most talented and versatile people I’ve ever met.”

“Chris is an encyclopedic reference for action hero films, but to him the important thing is the heart of the story, so I didn’t think of it as a comic, but as real, live action,” offers Balfe. “Every scene is amazing. After the first day working on the film, I forgot it was an animation. It was as live action as anything I have worked on!”

13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI

Paramount Music will release the 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI – Music from the Motion Picture digitally on January 15, 2016. The album features the film’s original score by Lorne Balfe (TERMINATOR GENISYS, PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR).

“The film is really about the soldiers’ ordeal and how they coped with the situation at hand,” said Balfe. “Michael (Bay) does a great job keeping the film from becoming political. The film is really here to honor the soldiers and the men and women who ultimately had to step up and do everything they could to save as many people as possible.”

13 hours score

From director Michael Bay, 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI is the gripping true story of six elite ex-military operators assigned to protect the CIA who fought back against overwhelming odds when terrorists attacked a U.S. diplomatic compound on September 11, 2012.  When everything went wrong, six men had the courage to do what was right. 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI is directed by Michael Bay from a screenplay by Chuck Hogan, based on the book 13 Hours by Mitchell Zuckoff and Members of the Annex Security Team. Read our interview here.

Produced by Erwin Stoff and Michael Bay. The film stars James Badge Dale, John Krasinski, Max Martini, Pablo Schreiber and Toby Stephens.

“The music needed to reflect the complex feelings the guys were dealing with and so instead of creating a solely action-packing score, we stuck with more simple electronic soundscapes,” Balfe described.  “Peter Gregson brought to the table his immense talent on electric cello and the sound we created with him, I think, evoked the feelings of isolation and abandonment that the men had to deal with.”

“Being able to work with Michael and be part of the telling of this important story, was a fantastic experience,” said Balfe.
