RIO 2nd Trailer & New Poster

20th Century Fox has released a 2nd trailer and new poster for RIO, the latest animated feature film from Blue Sky Studios.

How very cute, cute, cute does this movie look!?! My Mom will flip for this film – bird lover that she is, especially with all the Macaws. Love that the song used in the trailer and on the film’s official site, “Mais Que Nada,” is also used in JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO during the New York shopping spree.

Synopsis:

RIO is a 3-D animation feature from the makers of the “Ice Age” films. Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there’s another – and that she’s a she – he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio. But it’s far from love at first sight between the domesticated and flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life’s many wonders. RIO brings together a menagerie of vivid characters, a heart-warming story, colorful backdrops, energizing Latin and contemporary music, and family-friendly song and dance.

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS Trailer Has Arrived

The hilarious new trailer for I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS is here. You can watch the red-band trailer here.

As we told you in August, Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment have acquired the U.S. and Canadian rights to the film. Financed by Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, the film premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and opened on schedule internationally, grossing around $17 million. Our LA based editor, Melissa T.,  was at one the early test screenings and had nothing but raves for it.

Synopsis:

The story begins with Russell (Jim Carrey), on his deathbed recalling the events of his life that led him there. He begins with his life in Virginia Beach as a happily married police officer who plays the organ at church, has sex with his wife (Leslie Mann) and spends his off hours searching for his biological mother who gave him up as a child. But after a violent car crash, Russell leaves his life and family behind to go out into the world and be his true self, which is a gay man. He moves to Miami, finds a boyfriend (Rodrigo Santoro) and begins living an expensive lifestyle. He realizes quickly though, that a life of luxury is expensive, leading this resourceful former cop to turn to a life as a conman. But when his con work finally catches up with him, Russell is sent to prison where he meets, and almost instantly falls in love with Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). From there it becomes a story of a forlorn lover who cannot bear to be separated from his soul-mate. He will go to any lengths to be with Phillip, including but not limited to walking out of jail pretending to be a doctor, after stealing a badge and painting his clothing, ordering his release pretending to be a judge, impersonating Morris’s lawyer and fraudulently becoming the CFO of a major corporation. He also simulates suffering from AIDS, and forges records to indicate that he died from it.

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS will be in theaters on December 3, 2010. The film is rated R for sexual content including strong dialogue, and language.

Jim Carrey’s I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS Will Be In Theaters On December 3rd

Well it’s about time! I saw this movie at a test screening over a year ago. The general consensus of the audience at that screening was very positive. Personally, I loved it. I had no idea what it was about going in, but Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor were all I had to hear. This was so out of the norm for Jim Carrey. Although he has ventured out of his comedy comfort zone in the past (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND) this is completely different. You wouldn’t think that Ace Ventura himself would be believable as a newly out-of-the-closet gay man in an obsessive relationship, but it absolutely works. And by the obvious release date of the film, I’m not the only one who thinks so.I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS will hit theaters just in time to impress Oscar voters.

From DHD:

Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment have acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to I Love You Phillip Morris. Written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the fact based film stars Jim Carrey as a married conman who falls in love with his cellmate—Ewan McGregor—and commits all kinds of crazy misdeeds like breaking out of Texas prisons four times, to be with his lover. Roadside Attractions has set a December 3 release date.

The deal closely follows an announcement by Roadside Attractions and Liddell that they completed an acquisition of the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed Biutiful, which confirmed a story Deadline broke on August 10. Biutiful will also be released in December.

The deal ends a prolonged odyssey for I Love You Phillip Morris to find its way to movie screens here. Financed by Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, the film premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and opened on schedule internationally, grossing around $17 million. Besson’s hopes to see the film get a simultaneous domestic release turned into a nightmare.

The film’s original distributor, Consolidated Pictures Group, missed the original February 12 release date, and two other slots–March 26 and April 30–were also scratched.

While the upstart company made a Canadian distribution deal with Alliance and floated in the press a plan to platform the film July 30 and release it wide on August 6, Besson and producers Andrew Lazar and Far Shariat had seen enough. There was concern that the repeated delays would reflect badly on a film that has been well received abroad, particularly for Jim Carrey’s performance as the love-struck conman. Since CPG had failed to pay a $3 million minimum guarantee and there were questions it would be able to raise the $8 million P&A commitment that was crucial to a EuropaCorp-brokered DVD deal with Fox, Besson pulled back the picture on the grounds of breach of contract, which Deadline revealed April 13. EuropaCorp had discussions about placing the film with Newmarket, but that deal was never made.

Usually, disputes between distributors and film rights holders are handled in arbitration, but because CPG was new and unproven, the film’s reps at CAA and WME made a deal that gave EuropaCorp the latitude to pull its picture if deadlines weren’t met. Besson subsequently filed suit against CPG.

All that drama is in the rear view mirror with a new deal that gives the film a release date and a P&A commitment. Roadside Attractions now has three Oscar season films generating buzz for strong performances. Aside from Carrey, there is a Javier Bardem turn in Biutiful that won Best Actor at Cannes, and a performance by Jennifer Lawrence in the Sundance prize-winning film Winter’s Bone. Liddell and Roadside Attractions confirmed the acquisition and will announce it today.

“Audiences who know this is from the creators of Bad Santa will be thrilled that it’s as outrageous as they’d expect,” Liddell said in a statement. “It’s a true-life, daring, crazy love story with fascinating lead performances by Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor.”

Said Roadside Attractions co-president Howard Cohen: “This is a film that everyone has been talking about and we’re thrilled it became available again, as we had been in hot pursuit of it at Sundance and were disappointed it was one that got away.”

Review: ‘Funny People’

funnypeoplemovie

Suggesting that funnyman filmmaker Judd Apatow is a comic genius is like suggesting the world is round… it’s old news. It’s well-established that the man behind so many of today’s most hilarious and successfully crafted cinematic comedies can practically do no wrong. Well, he’s produced a couple of stinkers, but as a writer and director he’s nearly unbeatable. Shall I say he’s this generation’s Mel Brooks? No, his films are nothing like Mel’s. I’m merely suggesting he is that kind of comedic powerhouse.

FUNNY PEOPLE is, believe it or not, only the third feature film with Apatow as director. Having both written and directed this newest project, the film clearly has the feel of being a very personal project. How much of the inspiration from this story comes from his own life is unknown, but any good writer or artist will tell you that there’s always a bit of themselves in their work, whether they like it or not.

Adam Sandler plays George Simmons, an absurdly wealthy and successful comedian turned movie star, having made a fortune from making crappy kid’s movies and big studio comedies. Seriously, this guy’s house is nuts, so think of Simmons on the level of Jim Carrey, for example. We quickly learn that George has a rare form of leukemia and the news of his chances for recovering rock his world. At first, George opts to play it cool and not tell anyone his bad news. But as the burden of keeping this knowledge to himself begins to wear on him, he seeks solace from fellow comedians.

George happens to meet Ira Wright, played by Seth Rogen, an aspiring yet not well-hones stand-up comedian that somehow sparks George’s curiosity. In an effort to make the best of his remaining time, George hires Ira as an assistant and asks him to write jokes for him to start performing stand-up again. Ira lives with his two roommates Leo (Jonah Hill) a slightly more successful stand-up comedian and Mark (Jason Schwartzman) an ego-driven, less talented semi-star of a WB-style teen sitcom called YO TEACH. Ira also works at a local grocery store to make ends meet while struggling at his comedy, so being asked to write for George Simmons in a windfall.

Ira and George develop an awkward implied friendship. They’re an odd couple, but it works and they feed off each other, personally and professionally. The humor in FUNNY PEOPLE is smart, real and filled with substance, while not ignoring the type of writing and dialogue that has made past Apatow films so great. This is really more of a dramedy than any of his other films. FUNNY PEOPLE deals with some fairly sensitive human emotions and experiences, including that of realizing the one George let get away was his own fault. Leslie Mann plays Laura, George ex-girlfriend from 12 years past that nearly became his wife, but is now married to an Australian rugby-obsessed businessman played by Eric Bana.

FUNNY PEOPLE is a film about what’s truly important in life and what things like fame and fortune can do to us. It’s a film about how sometimes we need a serious wake-up call in life, an uncomfortable moment as we stare into the face of death to truly realize that the life we lead isn’t always the life we want. George isn’t perfect. Far from it as we witness him make many of the same mistakes over and over again in life, even after he faces it’s potential end and it’s that strange relationship he shares with Ira that will ultimately define how he pursues his second chance at life.

FUNNY PEOPLE is a real treat, laying out a wonderful story with great comedy both on and off the stage. Rogen’s performance has two stages, as he begins as a painfully struggling amateur that instills the need to cringe but develops over time into a more polished and promising comedian. The moments on stage from Sandler and Jonah Hill are near priceless. There’s an element of watching Lenny Bruce’s downward spiral from entertaining comical brilliance to over-bearing political indulgence as George Simmons takes his sickness on stage with him in one scene and a hush falls over the crowd and he slips into a very dark place. It’s an extremely powerful scene as George has some inner moment of harsh clarity.

The cast also includes Aubrey Plaza (Mystery Team) as a fellow amateur comedian and Ira’s love interest, The RZA as Ira’s co-worker in the grocery store deli, Aziz Ansari (Parks and Recreation) as another comedian as well as several surprise guest appearances playing themselves as friends and colleagues of George Simmons. Another element of the film that plays an unlikely but welcome role in the film is the music, featuring artists uncommonly heard in such big films like the brilliant Wilco.

Long story short, FUNNY PEOPLE is almost entirely a grand slam. The only real complaint I have about the film is the long segment at Laura’s house when George and Ira visit. This portion of the film does drag a bit and takes up precious screen time with non-essential plot elements that could have been effectively touched upon in a much shorter and refined approach. The total running time for FUNNY PEOPLE is 146 minutes, but a good 30 minutes or so could have been cut and the film would have been a that much better. Otherwise, FUNNY PEOPLE is a fun and light-hearted comedy with Apatow flair and a good, inspiring story that will have you leaving the theater feeling satisfied.

Review: ’17 Again’

17-again

A lot can be said for sweet and wholesome.   Take ’17 Again,’ the latest family-friendly, body-swap comedy starring Zac Efron.   Sure, this type of premise should have its own genre status, and there is very little in the way of originality when it comes to story.

Man hates his life.   Man wishes he could go back to his youth.   Man runs into magical, mystery man.   Man gets transported back to his youth so he can relive it all differently.   Man realizes his life wasn’t that bad off in the first place.

There are differences here and there between these films, and nothing is ever going to top films like ‘Freaky Friday’ or ‘Big,’ but, as I said, sweet and wholesome go a long way.   That’s the most interesting thing about ’17 Again,’ a film that, on paper, sounds like a first-ballot candidate for Worst Film of the Year.   It actually finds its way through the meandering, surface-level premise and it turns itself into a genuinely respectable film.   It’s the cinematic equivalent of the star quarterback who you know will have an extremely bright future despite the emptiness between his ears.

Efron stars as high school senior Mike O’Donnell.   At the instance his life is about to launch itself, he gives up everything to spend it with his pregnant, high school sweetheart.   Jump forward 20 years where Mike is miserable, he is going through a divorce, and he looks like Matthew Perry.   Cue the magical, mystery man, played by Brian Doyle-Murray, who sends Mike back into the body of his former self.

’17 Again’ is directed by Burr Steers, who, up until now (and probably from here until eternity), was most famous for being the guy on the couch in the Ezekial 25:17 scene in ‘Pulp Fiction.’   That doesn’t offer anything to this review.   I just found it interesting.

Steers doesn’t offer any ingenuity into the making of this film.   This is pretty standard point-and-shoot filmmaking, but you don’t want a flashy auteur to make a movie like ’17 Again.’

There are genuine moments of hilarity in ’17 Again.’   Anything involving actor Thomas Lennon, who plays Nid, Mike’s geeky best friend, is comedy gold.   Ned is the type of person who would rather spend $1000 on an authentic Gandalf the White staff from ‘The Two Towers’ than learn how to pick up women the civilized way.   Imagine the comedy that derives from Ned falling head over heels in love with the principal of the school Mike enters himself into.

Lennon plays the role with absolute enthusiasm, and Steers knows how funny this actor is playing this character.   We get the perfect amount of Ned in the film, scattered just enough so as not to overshadow the main storyline but never allowing you to forget about him.

Thankfully, Perry is not the star here.   Any scene he is in is excruciatingly awful, and it’s a chore just to make it through.   Luckily, this Efron’s film, and, say what you will about the kid, he’s going to be a star whether we like it or not.   This isn’t a bad thing, as the kid is a halfway decent actor. In ’17 Again,’ he pulls off a dead-on impression of Perry, but never allows that aspect of his role take over.   He can be funny when the film calls for that, and he can turn on the drama when that is called for, as well.   If Efron is able to distance himself from his ‘High School Musical’ persona, he will definitely be making a name for himself very soon.

’17 Again’ is predictable, flagrantly so more often than not.   It’s a film whose initial concept should probably have been scrapped long before the execution stage.   However, in the end, it pulls it out at the last minute and makes something of itself.   It’s not a serious contender for anything other than a Kid’s Choice Award, and it will surely be forgotten roughly ten minutes after you leave the theater, but when it comes to family-friendly films, there are a lot worse candidate out there than ’17 Again.’   In the end, the mere shock that the film is any good at all raises its stakes just that much higher.

Overall: 3.5 stars out of 5

First Movie Still from ‘Funny People’

Here is the first photo still of the newest Judd Apatow film ‘Funny People’. This is the third film that this funny man has directed and in an interview said that for this film he wants to make a serious film that will still make you laugh till you can’t anymore. As you can see, the movie stars an all-star cast of Adam Sandler, Leslie Mann, Seth Rogan and Eric Bana. The movie drops in theaters July 31st.
