JURASSIC PARK itself certainly holds up. In 1993, JURASSIC PARK did for monster movies what King Kong had originally done in 1933. It combines the new (at the time) visual effects technology of CG with a fantastic story and great characters to create a dizzying exciting movie packed with action, scares, intrigue, drama and humor. It was Spielberg doing what he does better than just about anybody – creating pure cinematic entertainment which is visually stunning and emotionally satisfying. He set up the story with brilliant flourishes, like the opening killing of the park worker where all we see of the monster is a closeup of its eye, then moves on to show us the dinosaurs in a perfectly judged mixture of awe, wonder and terror. The eight minute sequence where the T-Rex attacks the children in the rainstorm sustains an incredible level of suspense. The entire movie is filled with such brilliant scenes though – the juxtaposition of the kids on the electric fence with Ellie trying to turn the power back on, the hide-and-seek with the raptors in the kitchen. Even the quiet moments where Alan and the kids hide in the tree or when Hammond tells the melancholic story of his flea circus are all charged with emotion. JURASSIC PARK was the best kind of Hollywood blockbuster; a rich, eye-popping, scary entertainment extravaganza from a tremendous fantasy story, lovingly crafted by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.

Dino’s Still Rule At Universal Studios Hollywood’s Celebration Of 25th Anniversary Of JURASSIC PARK

This past weekend, Universal Studios Hollywood celebrated the 25th Anniversary of JURASSIC PARK. Yes, it’s hard to believe, but the iconic Steven Spielberg-directed classic came out 25 years ago!

To celebrate the momentous occasion, Universal Studios Hollywood opened its doors to only the most hard-core fans of the dino-flick, and WeAreMovieGeeks.com was there to soak in all the action.

For three nights, fans were invited to come in costume and celebrate all things Jurassic Park. There were props from the movie on display, including costumes and vehicles, photo ops and other interactive displays, including a virtual reality experience where fans could don VR goggles and headphones and be transported directly into the “park”, complete with Raptors, a Triceratops and a Pteranodon, as well as an erupting volcano.

One of the most interesting parts of the evening was the panel discussion, hosted by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow.

Other members of the panel included Jurassic Park 1st Assistant Director John T. Kretchmer, Director of Photography Dean Cundey, and Oscar-winning Special Effects Supervisor Dennis Muren.

Having all worked on the movie in 1993, they had the greatest behind-the-scene stories. The die-hard fans in attendance ate it up, especially the fun fact that the final scene in the movie, where the T-Rex comes in and saves the day by taking out the raptors wasn’t originally scripted. The T-Rex wasn’t even in the scene. Said Kretchmer, “as we were shooting it, Steven (Spielberg) felt something wasn’t right. He felt we really needed to show the T-Rex one more time…that it was what the audience would really want.” And he was right…who can forget that image of the T-Rex exerting his final power over all of the other living things?

The biggest highlight of the evening was being able to ride Jurassic Park the ride. As many times as we have ridden that ride, (and it’s a lot) it never gets old. It’s still the most fun attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood. There was also a bit of nostalgia – this would probably be the last time for us, because Universal Studios Hollywood recently unveiled plans to replace the attraction with a brand new Jurassic World attraction that promises to be even better.  And oh we cannot wait!!

For the final event of the evening, those in attendance were sent via Universal Studios Tram from the lower lot to the AMC Theater at City Walk to watch the film on the big screen, as it was presented in 1993, in all its glory.

And if it’s been 25 years since you’ve seen the film, take my advice and throw in that DVD you’ve had all these years. It’s worth another look because this is one movie that definitely stands the test of time – and it will prepare you to head out to the theater on June 22 for the next great dino-flick,  JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM.

Owen (CHRIS PRATT) meets the vicious T. rex in “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire (BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Welcome to “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

Universal Studios Hollywood Announces New “Jurassic World Ride” To Open In 2019

In 2019, colossal, dimensional dinosaurs will once again roam the Earth and astound guests when Universal Studios Hollywood debuts an all-new technologically-advanced epic adventure inspired by Universal Pictures’ blockbuster film franchise: Welcome to the “Jurassic World Ride.”

Drawing from the favorite elements of the original “Jurassic Park—The Ride,” this next-generation thrill ride will be a fully reimagined iteration of the ground-breaking adventure, elevating every facet of the experience. With the introduction of never-before-seen dinosaurs, enhanced storytelling, lush scenic design, an entirely new color scheme and uncompromised state-of the art technology, the ride will capture elements never experienced within a theme park.

To rally fans for the finale of “Jurassic Park—The Ride” on September 3, 2018, Universal Studios Hollywood has launched a “Countdown to the Extinction” campaign—inviting guests from around the world to experience the ride before its transformation into the all-new “Jurassic World Ride” in 2019.

The countdown to the extinction of “Jurassic Park—The Ride” begins as Universal Studios Hollywood excavates the site in preparation for the 2019 arrival of “Jurassic World Ride,” inspired by Universal Pictures’ blockbuster film franchise.

“Jurassic Park—The Ride” will officially become extinct on September 3, 2018.

In 1996, Universal Studios Hollywood redefined theme park thrill rides with the unprecedented introduction of “Jurassic Park—The Ride,” based on three-time Academy Award®winner Steven Spielberg’s epic film.  Hailed as a technological achievement of triumph and wizardry, the ride featured newly debuted principles of hydraulic physics, mechanics and space-age robotics.  Working in partnership with scientists, palaeontologists and aerospace engineers, Universal Creative—the team that develops Universal theme park rides—brought to life one of the most compelling rides ever created. Life-sized and lifelike animatronic dinosaurs, some towering over five-stories high, freely roamed the earth at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Twenty-two years later—and after sending millions of guests back to the Jurassic era for menacing face-to-face encounters with such predators as Stegosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Dilophosaurus, Velociraptors and the Tyrannosaurus rex—“Jurassic Park—The Ride” will become extinct in preparation for a new, next-generation experience that’s even more immersive and technologically advanced.  The new ride will pay homage to Jurassic Park and will reimagine this landmark film franchise for theme park guests.  The Jurassic Cove restaurant and Jurassic Outfitters retail store also will close with the attraction and reopen with the new experience in 2019.

“The one thing that the history of evolution has taught us is that life finds a way” was famously uttered by Jurassic Park’s Dr. Ian Malcom.  In the spirit of this pledge, Universal Studios Hollywood is rallying guests and fans to visit The Entertainment Capital of L.A. as it celebrates this epic ride and prepares for the arrival of the “Jurassic World Ride.”

Plus, in honor of the blockbuster action-adventure that brought dinosaurs out of extinction a quarter century ago, Universal Studios Hollywood in partnership with Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment will host the Jurassic Park 25th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, May 11Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13.

JURASSIC PARK with Live Music by The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra November 3rd – 5th

JURASSIC PARK  screens with live music accompaniment by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra November 3-5th at Powell Hall in St. Louis (718 N Grand Blvd)

I’ve often said there’s nothing better than watching silent movies with live music, but what about watching sound movies with live music? When the movie is JURASSIC PARK and the score is being performed by the award-winning St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, it just becomes one of those events that can’t be missed. John William’s beloved score is performed live by the STL Symphony with Steven Spielberg’s’s adventure classic shown from the Powell Hall stage beginning at 7pm  November 3rd and 4th, and 2:30pm Sunday November 5th.

The movie itself certainly holds up. In 1993, JURASSIC PARK did for monster movies what King Kong had originally done in 1933. The Tivoli Announces the ‘Reel Late’ Midnight Line-Up – JURASSIC PARK, THE ROOM, ZARDOZ

“YOU’RE TEARING ME APART, LISA!”

MIDNIGHTSX4

Another great lineup of midnight movies for the ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ for late July through early September. It’s a typically good variety of titles that will draw the late night movie buff crowd and a couple of retro surprises are to be found. The Midnight Movie experience has always catered to a college-age crowd and that’s the way it should be. When I was that age, in the early ’80s, midnight standards included A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971), THE GRADUATE (1967), NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), KING OF HEARTS (1966), and HAROLD AND MAUDE (1971). Those last two haven’t shown in many years. KING OF HEARTS especially seems to have fallen off the cult movie radar , so imagine my surprise when I saw that the Tivoli had HAROLD AND MAUDE as part of their new line-up. That’ll be some old school midnight fun and I hope it gets a good crowd. ZARDOZ, a trippy/cheesy sci-fi mess from 1974 has Sean Connery running around in a red diaper and is also a brilliant, throwback choice.

header2

Of course the big event of the summer will be July 31st and August 1st when there will be thousands of plastic spoons flying through the air and grown men in tuxedos will be throwing footballs three feet away from each other in the Tivoli’s lobby. It’s of course THE ROOM and the return of the one and only Tommy Wiseau, the film’s amazing triple-threat talent writer/director/star. When Tommy was last in town, three years ago, both shows sold out  and Tommy brought a big box of  THE ROOM T-Shirts, DVD’s, posters, ‘Johnny’ bobbleheads  and more to sign for his legion of adoring fans. I’m sure this summer’s event will be just as fun. Tickets are $15 and are already on sale at the Tivoli’s box office or site.

MIDNIGHTSX4-2

HAROLD AND MAUDE isn’t the oldest film on the new midnight schedule. THE WIZARD OF OZ from 1939 will screen midnights August 14th and 15th and there will be a special noon show on Saturday the 15th.

Reel Late at the Tivoli takes place every Friday and Saturday night and We Are Movie Geeks own Tom Stockman (that’s me!) is there with custom trivia questions about the films and always has DVDs, posters, and other cool stuff to give away. I can’t wait to write ZARDOZ trivia! Ticket prices are $8 (except THE ROOM  which is $15). We hope to see everyone late at night in the coming months.

The Tivoli is located at 6350 Delmar in The Loop. Visit Landmark’s The Tivoli’s website HERE
