Paul Thomas Anderson’s INHERENT VICE Trailer Arrives

inherent vice

Just in time for Christmas and awards season contention, Warner Bros. Pictures has released the wild first trailer for INHERENT VICE.

The movie is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaption of a Thomas Pynchon novel.

The film stars Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson; Katherine Waterston; Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro; Martin Short; Jena Malone and musician Joanna Newsom.

When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

inherent vice

Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (“There Will Be Blood,” “The Master”) directed INHERENT VICE from a screenplay he wrote based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon. Anderson also produced the film, together with Oscar-nominated producers JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi (“There Will Be Blood”).

Anderson’s behind-the-scenes creative team included Oscar-winning director of photography Robert Elswit (“There Will Be Blood”), production designer David Crank (“The Master”), Oscar-nominated editor Leslie Jones (“The Thin Red Line”), and Oscar-winning costume designer Mark Bridges (“The Artist”). The music is by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.

INHERENT VICE opens in limited release on December 12, 2014 and expanding on January 9, 2015.

The film is rated R for drug use throughout, sexual content, graphic nudity, language and some violence.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR – The Review

sincity2

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s belated follow-up to the most visually inventive comic book adaptation to make its way to a movie screen, is black and white and red all over. There’s plenty of blood in the sequel, either represented as the color of fresh snow or its natural red. Stark monochrome with the occasional color splash of blood, fire or lipstick is the hallmark of the ultimate town without pity, which comes roaring back to life in this superb follow-up that serves as a sequel and prequel at the same time. Characters that died are back while earlier incidents serve as motivation. SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR presents new characters and old ones played by different actors. But the film’s look and artistry and the barn-burning 3D mayhem is so exhilarating that one quickly forgives its lack of logic and you gotta admire a film that’s so in-your-face about its lack of morals, values, ethics, or any sense of wholesomeness. SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is violent, vulgar, full of nudity, and highly recommended.

The plot will be confusing if you haven’t seen the original and even if you have, I recommend a re-viewing to catch all the references. Marv, the loveable hulk played so well by Mickey Rourke is back in SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. This time his story is less tragic and he just has a good time upping up the body count. Dwight, played by Clive Owen in part one, returns as well, though he’s now Josh Brolin (a throwaway line about plastic surgery clears that up) who seems to be in a growling competition with Rourke. Michael Clarke Duncan’s Manute has been replaced by Dennis Haysbert, who’s fine though casting another big black giant like Duncan would have better fit the material. Powers Boothe’s sinister Senator Roark is the central villain this time out and the actor has a great scenery-gnashing time. The major new male character is Joesph Gordon Levitt’s Johnny, a cocky young gambler whose luck runs out when he crashes Roark’s backroom poker game. Other new guys include Jeremy Piven and Christopher Meloni as doomed cops and Christopher Lloyd, hilarious as a doctor who shows how much surgery 40 bucks can buy.

The film’s title is appropriate. While the estrogen-enriched story is told through the eyes of its roughest male characters, there are indeed plenty of dames in SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR to kill for. Jessica Alba is back as Nancy, the stripper hell-bent on revenge for the death of Hartigan (Bruce Willis back as a ghost only she can see – I kept waiting for her to say “I see dead people!”). Alba (whose bod doesn’t show she’s had two kids since SC1) apparently attended a stripper school that teaches that clothing stays on, but this time she gets to wield some high-powered weapons and join in the grisly fun. Rosario Dawson returns as Gail as does Jamie King as both Goldie and Wendy. Devin Aoki has been replaced as the head-hacking swordstress Niho by Jamie Chung and Lady Gaga and Juno Temple each shine in one-scene roles. But there’s no chick so fierce as the sequel’s best new character: Eva Green’s Ava, the most aggressive movie maneater since….well….. Eva Green in 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE! Green gives a physical and over-the-top perf as the ultimate black widow who effortlessly manipulates men into murderous acts. She’s flat-out spectacular in the kind of unapologetic arch-villain role that is all-too rare for actresses. In a perfect world Green would cop an Oscar nom for her work here. She plays many of her scenes in the buff and after ScarJo in UNDER THE SKIN and Olivia Wilde in THIRD PERSON, 2014 is shaping up to be a stellar year for exciting actresses in their prime performing nude (I hope that doesn’t sound pervy).

Some may complain the tone and look of SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is too similar to its predecessor and that it doesn’t break any new ground. That may be true, but I loved the stylized representation of the first film which so artfully bridged the differences between performance and static comic art in exciting, sometimes beautiful ways and I for one was glad the sequel didn’t go in new directions visually. The 3D is brilliant, adding a cool razor-sharp dimension to Frank Miller’s flat comic panels. The nine year wait has paid off big: SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is the most ambitious, entertaining, and artistically magnificent adult film of the summer.

Marvel Announces Sequel To James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY At Comic Con

On Saturday night at Comic Con in San Diego, director James Gunn and actor Chris Pratt announced a sequel to Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. July 28, 2017 to be exact.

It was also officially announced that actor Josh Brolin can be seen and heard as the villain Thanos in Gunn’s upcoming film, opening in theaters this Friday, August 1st.

Brolin will also play Thanos in future movies for Marvel Studios.

“Josh brings all the weight and stature necessary for a character as iconic and significant as Thanos,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “We’re incredibly excited for fans to see more of him as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.”

Many of us here at WAMG have seen the film and it’s terrific. Unlike anything you’ve truly ever seen, the epic space adventure is one you’ll definitely want to experience in IMAX 3D.

The action-packed Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Marvel also revealed at the panel that Corey Stoll and Evangeline Lilly are joining the cast of ANT-MAN as Hope Pym and Darren Cross. Starring Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, the film hits theaters July 31, 2015.

Lastly, the stars of Joss Whedon’s THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON were in Hall H to discuss the film with the audience and show new footage.

Deadline reports:

Whedon couldn’t be here because of an injury. Feige said, “Scarlett couldn’t be here because she’s pregnant.” Then she introduced a clip via video from Age of Ultron in which the team, in a penthouse, play a round of trying to pick up Thor’s hammer. Tony Stark puts his Iron Man hand on, Captain American makes a go. Then Ultron crashes the party. Iron Man gets in a big super suit as apocalypse dawns again. A lot of crash-bang-boom, like the finale of the first film. Playing throughout the trailer is a child singing, “I Got No Strings” from Disney’s Pinocchio. Last shot in the clip shows all the Avengers lying dead, with Tony Stark the only one standing alive. The audience gave the clip a standing ovation. Amplifying the room’s mood was Josh Brolin walking in as Thanos.

LABOR DAY

LABOR DAY – The Review

LABOR DAY

Were it better, LABOR DAY might well strike a seductive chord for romantics: a dreamy escaped convict hovers over a mother and son he’s taken hostage over a holiday weekend. One so full of love, cooking, and romance, it will change their lives forever. But the film, based on the Joyce Maynard novel, is so trapped in a dreary Nicolas Sparks-style cliche-ridden universe that we know the entire plot from the start to the over-sentimental climax. LABOR DAY stars Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, two usually solid actors, but they’re wasted as LABOR DAY neither raises the pulse nor unintentionally entertains and while some may eat this mush up, most will see it as a tremendous disappointment from writer/director Jason Reitman (of JUNO and UP IN THE AIR fame).

LABOR DAY centers on 13-year-old Henry Wheeler, who cares for his mopey, reclusive mother Adele (Winslet) after his dad (Clark Gregg), fed up with her depression, leaves them for his secretary. On a back-to-school shopping trip, Adele and Henry are confronted by Frank Chambers (Brolin), a convicted murderer injured after escaping from the nearby prison who convinces the pair to take him into their home (since he’s unarmed, it’s not clear why she doesn’t yell for help in the store, but it’s that kind of movie). Once there, he ties his captives to a chair for about ten minutes. Then he unties them and cooks chili. Then he bakes biscuits. Then he prepares a perfectly photogenic peach pie, working the dough with his rugged man-hands Swayze-style and whispering seductively in Adele’s ear “Pie crust is a very forgiving thing” (where’s Diablo Cody when you need her? Does his junk smell like pie?). He fixes the broken door, repairs the car, waxes the floor, cleans the gutters, plays catch with Henry, mends Adele’s aching depression with his masterful massage techniques, and assembles some Ikea furniture. I made that last one up but….wow, what a man! (he and Adele sweat a lot too but I’m unclear whether or not they have sex – I don’t think they do – but I could be wrong – maybe I missed something!) As Frank and Adele plan a Canadian getaway, an endless series of flashbacks inform us he’s not really a cold-blooded double murderer at all. He killed his baby kinda sorta by accident, and that slutty wife of his, the one that died after banging her head on the radiator when he shoved her…..she may have had it coming. Meanwhile, to pad out the slim story, Henry begins a friendship with a movie-wise young girl (Brighid Fleming).

Reitman’s adaptation of Ms Maynard’s novel plods along with dialogue somewhere around the level of bad Harlequin, and his direction is sluggish and fails to build a speck of tension. I liked YOUNG ADULT but thought it was a step backwards for the usually reliable writer/director, whose JUNO and UP IN THE AIR were such standouts, but LABOR DAY is his worst film yet. Brolin can play these hunky lugs in his sleep but Ms Winslet can’t seem to get a grip on her character. There’s a scene where she and Henry nervously withdraw her life savings before hitting the road with Mr. Perfect. The bank employees are leery – “this is suspicious” the bank manager exclaims and Winslet’s overly nervous fluttering is all wrong for the scene. Blame the director for not coaxing a better performance from his star but everybody acts illogically in LABOR DAY. Frank’s idea of ‘laying low’ is to repair the roof even though there’s a wanted poster with his mug on it tacked on a phone pole out front. And why is everyone in this town such busybodies? A nosy neighbor (Brooke Smith) with a disabled son keeps popping into Adele’s home unannounced, clerks at the local market ask meddlesome questions, and the local cop (James VanDer Beek) follows Adele inside her home even though she asks him not to. And why is Henry, presented late in the film as a tall, broad-shouldered older teen, played in epilogue as an adult by runty Tobey Maguire? On the plus side, the two leads are attractive enough to hold interest for a while and the cinematography is nice to look at. The camera often pans up to offer a graceful look at tree branches as the sunlight peeks through while Rolfe Kent’s sappy score swoons. But they’re lovely shots in a production prettified, safe, and bland…..and lame.
