SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER Dances Back Into Theaters May 7th & May 10th

“You make it with some of these chicks, they think you gotta dance with them.”

In 1977, Saturday Night Fever became a cultural touchestone like few movies before or since, and this May fans can catch the fever again when the influential classic returns to the big screen for two days only in celebration of its 40th anniversary.

Director John Badham worked with Paramount Pictures to restore the film using the original negative and update the surround sound mix to further enhance viewers’ enjoyment of the incredible soundtrack. During this process he added scenes to the theatrical R-rated version that round out character and plot, making this new Director’s Cut the definitive representation of his original vision.

Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures will present the brand-new Director’s Cut of Saturday Night Fever in cinemas nationwide on Sunday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 10, at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (local time) each day.

Tickets for the “Saturday Night Fever 40th Anniversary” Director’s Cut presentations can be purchased online by visiting www.fathomevents.com or at participating theater box offices. Fans throughout the U.S. will be able to enjoy the event in nearly 700 select movie theaters through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network (DBN). For a complete list of theater locations visit the Fathom Events https://www.fathomevents.com/events/saturday-night-fever-40th-anniversary (theaters and participants are subject to change).

With John Travolta’s electrifying Oscar®-nominated performance, the Bee Gees’ explosive soundtrack and, of course, the unforgettable dancing, Saturday Night Fever captured the angst and brio of the time and had an indelible impact on popular culture. Forty years later, the film about a Brooklyn kid with no prospects who lives for Saturday night continues to be revered and celebrated.
Saturday Night Fever’s unforgettable soundtrack was composed and performed primarily by the Bee Gees and features mega-hits including “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “More Than A Woman” and “If I Can’t Have You.”  The album has sold more than 40 million copies and was ranked number 132 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2012.

On April 21, 2017, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) celebrates the 40th anniversary of Saturday Night Fever with the vinyl reissue of Saturday Night Fever: The Original Movie Sound Track, currently available on CD and digital.

“To see Saturday Night Fever in a movie theater is an experience to be savored,” said Fathom Events Vice President of Studio Relations Tom Lucas. “Teaming up with Paramount Pictures to present John Badham’s Director’s Cut is an even bigger thrill, both for us and for audiences nationwide.”

In addition to the in-theater celebration, the 40th anniversary Director’s Cut of Saturday Night Fever will also be available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD on May 2, 2017.

CARRIE (1976) Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah

CARRIE (1976)  screens Midnights this weekend (April 28th and 29th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.

carrie-1976-1
Over the past few decades, almost everything ever written by Stephen King has been filmed for either TV or the silver screen; however, very few of these adaptations have come close to matching the extremely high standard set by CARRIE the first King novel to receive the movie treatment, way back in 1976 (which is when I first saw it at the old Webster Groves Cinema – double feature with DEMON SEED!).

carrie-shower
Directed by Brian De Palma, this superb supernatural horror stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, a shy and awkward teenage girl who is mercilessly bullied at high-school and further tormented at home by her overbearing, religious zealot mother (Piper Laurie). To make matters worse, at the same time as Carrie experiences her first period (during the film’s unforgettable opening shower sequence), she also discovers that she has developed telekinetic abilities that get more powerful but less controllable as she becomes increasingly distressed.
carrie-1976-3
When a group of spiteful classmates (led by the gorgeous Nancy Allen and a young John Travolta) implement a nasty plan to humiliate Carrie during prom night, the poor girl finally snaps and unleashes her full psychic wrath on the unsuspecting revelers.
carrie2
Determined to impress with his first major Hollywood movie, director De Palma pulls out all the stops to bring Lawrence D. Cohen’s excellent screenplay to life, displaying a confident and flamboyant style full of the fluid, gliding camera movements and impressive visual trickery that would eventually become synonymous with his work; these stunning visuals, combined with a lush orchestral score by Pino Donaggio and faultless performances from an amazing cast go to make Carrie an unmissable experience. Spacek’s central performance is astonishing: her touching portrayal of the vulnerable and withdrawn Carrie—always wary, yet aching for acceptance—is heartbreaking and anyone who has suffered the indignity of bullying will no doubt find the fiery prom night massacre a strangely cathartic experience. Also worthy of praise are Piper Laurie as Margaret White, who mistakenly believes that she is protecting her daughter, but is actually doing much more harm than good (although her motherly advice about skipping the prom was, for once, right on the money), William Katt as Carrie’s well-meaning prom date Tommy Ross, and Amy Irving as repentant bully Sue Snell, who is unable to thwart her school-pals’ cruel trick.
carrie_1976_1
Stylish, beautiful, tragic, shocking, and even occasionally humorous, CARRIE is an absolute classic that deserves to be enjoyed again on the big screen and you’ll have the chance this weekend at The Moolah!

“It’s a Chopper Baby!” PULP FICTION Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

pulpheader

“That’s thirty minutes away. I’ll be there in ten.”

pulp6

PULP FICTION plays midnights this weekend (May 27th and 28th) at the Tivoli (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO) as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

pulp307599

I watch PULP FICTION every couple of years and it just gets better. The icy wit, the connoisseur soundtrack, the violence , the extended dialogue riffing, the trance-like unreality, the inspired karmic balance of the heroin scene and the adrenalin scene, the narrative switchbacks that allow John Travolta to finish the film both alive and dead, the spectacle of him being made to dance badly, but also sort of brilliantly …and above all else, the sheer excitement that Tarantino managed to conjure up in 1994. Today this touchstone of cool seems to extend its dangerous influence everywhere: movies, fiction, journalism, media, fashion, restaurants, you name it. Everyone has been trying to do irony and incorrectness since, but without Tarantino’s brilliance. Experience PULP FICTION on the big screen again when it plays this Friday and Saturday (May 27th and 28th).

Reel Late at the Tivoli takes place every Friday and Saturday night and We Are Movie Geeks own Tom Stockman (that’s me!) will be there with custom trivia questions about the film and always has DVDs, posters, and other cool stuff to give away. Ticket prices are $8

I Got Chills! GREASE Sing-a-Long – Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah

grease-header
“Why, this car is Auto-matic. Its System-matic. Its Hyyyyydro-matic. Why, its Greased Lightning!”

GREASE (the Sing-a-Long version) screens midnights this weekend (September 4th and 5th) at The Moolah Theater (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO). Admission is only $5

greasemaxresdefault

In 1978 John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John starred in GREASE, a ’70s version of a’50s musical. It was a huge hit and coming off the heels of his Oscar-nominated turn in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER the year before, made a megastar of John Travolta (a wattage that was short-lived until his PULP FICTION comeback almost 20 years later).Olivia Newton-John came from Australia and won the hearts of music fans. “You’re The One That I Want” is the hot number from the film. The pair dressed in black. “Tell me about it, stud!” she cooed. GREASE appealed to younger generations. Male/female duos perform ‘Summer Nights’ to karaoke tracks. The film also exaggerated. The cast of GREASE was long out of high school, ranging in age from 19 to 35 (Stockard Channing’s Rizzo). Barry Gibb composed the title song, which oddly enough, is closer to disco than to rock ‘n’ roll.

grease-the-red-list

I never went and saw GREASE even though I was 16 when it came out. It looked, for decades, like a movie I wouldn’t like. Finally, about 5 or 6 years ago, they screened the sing-a-long version at The Galaxy and I saw it there. I found the film full of zeal and energy but at the same time it was kinda cheesy, with lame choreography and a sort of general cheapness to it. But the innocence and color of the 50s had been well-captured and what I found most refreshing was that there were no dark sub-plots – it’s a happy musical and not much more. The fact that this remains one of the most popular film musicals of all time I think is a testament to the songs and to John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John (and I like it when Olivia gets “slutty”). Check it out when the Sing-a-long version (that means the lyrics as burned in as subtitles on the print) plays midnights this weekend (September 4th and 5th) at The Moolah Theater (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO). Admission is only $5

THE FORGER Trailer Stars John Travolta, Christopher Plummer, Tye Sheridan and Abigail Spencer

ChristopherPlummer_TyeSheridan_JohnTravolta_THEFORGER_LARGE

Watch The brand new trailer for THE FORGER.

The film had its world premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival in September.

In his review, Alex Billington (FirstShowing.net) wrote THE FORGER is a “thoughtful, engaging film that will remind you how to enjoy the simple pleasures of life again.”

Learning that his teenage son Will (Tye Sheridan) has been diagnosed with cancer, Ray Cutter (Travolta) manages to get out of prison nine months ahead of schedule to rejoin the household where Ray’s spry, ornery dad, Joseph (Christopher Plummer), has been caring for Will in Ray’s absence. The hitch is that, while Ray wants to go straight, the shady character who made Ray’s early release possible expects him to pull off an impossible heist as payment: snatching Monet’s Woman with Parasol from the highly secured museum where it’s on display and replacing it with a replica so perfect that no one will notice.

An experienced thief and a world-class art forger, Ray is the only man for the job, and in any case he has no choice. But can he perform this high-stakes robbery while also trying to fulfill his dying son’s wishes?

THE FORGER will be released March 26, 2015 on DIRECTV and April 24, 2015 in theaters and On Demand
