ZIPPER – The Review

ZIP_02492.cr2

By Dana Jung

Sam Ellis (Patrick Wilson) is a high-powered lawyer with the U.S. Attorney’s office who is on a fast track to a higher political office.  He has a loving wife (Lena Headey) and young son, the admiration of his colleagues, and the interest of a Washington power-broker (Richard Dreyfuss).  In fact, Sam has everything going his way in life.  But something is not quite right with Sam.  There is a disconnect going on in the seemingly comfortable relationship with his wife, and Sam is turning to other sexual outlets to relieve the tension of his stressful job and super-powered future.

When a routine interview with a witness on a case turns out to be with a high-end escort, things begin to change for Sam.  No longer satisfied with masturbating to internet porn, Sam makes contact with an escort service and starts having regular sexual encounters, with a new woman every time.  But secrets this big are hard to keep, and we become witnesses ourselves to the tension of Sam’s predicament.  Will his wife find out?  What will the truth do to his political aspirations?  Will the FBI investigate the escort agency and will the agency then implicate him?

A story like this really rests on the strength of its performances, and ZIPPER comes up aces in that department, as director Mora Stephens has culled fine performances from an excellent cast.  Wilson, probably best known as the father in the INSIDIOUS films, plays Sam as a southern charmer; handsome and self-assured, Sam draws us in to sympathize with him even as we are repulsed by his behavior.

This dramatic tension works extremely well, as Sam’s sexual obsession affects his daily life more and more.  Headey (TVs GAME OF THRONES), as always, lets her understated intelligence shine through in a low-key performance that makes her betrayal all the more affecting when the inevitable final outburst of emotion arrives. Dreyfuss is not wasted in the pivotal role of the snake-charmer, and John Cho and Ray Winstone also lend solid support. The escorts are also portrayed by some fine young actresses,  including a particularly sexy Alexandra Breckenridge, and Penelope Mitchell as a younger escort with her own sad story. Mitchell is especially good in a wonderful scene that takes place in Sam’s parked car, which represents just how low this man has fallen.

ZIP_04166.cr2

The sex scenes—and there are many—are intimately shot and have a somewhat distorted quality, giving the impression of an almost drug-induced state that Sam is experiencing.  At times during the sex, Sam has the look of someone on a bender who has suddenly realized where he was and what he was doing, and wondered why.  Or perhaps it’s only the guilt of a generally good man doing something bad.

The main themes of ZIPPER concern the correlation between sex and politics, such as the addictive nature of both, the constant juxtaposition of doing things in secret that others want to know about, the use of sex as a political weapon.  It seems to conclude that the very obsessive nature of certain sexual  behavior is the very thing that makes a good politician. The film even darkly suggests that any sexual act can be used to achieve the means to an end, to help protect a political career.

Dramas mixing sex and politics are nothing new, ranging from the well-done (see THE GOOD WIFE on TV) to the tawdry (BULWORTH, anyone?).  ZIPPER joins this genre as a very well-acted and thought-provoking study of a descent into sexual addiction.

RATING: 3 ½ out of 5 stars

GENESIS RODRIGUEZ (IDENTITY THIEF) Talks To WAMG

genesis-rodriguez

The number one comedy blockbuster IDENTITY THIEF is ready to steal a space on your Blu-Ray and DVD shelf, and in support of its June 4th release, WAMG was invited out to Dodger stadium to watch star Genesis Rodriguez, who plays Marisol in the film, throw out the first pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals. While there, I got the chance to speak to her about the film. I might have also watched my home team Cardinals win. What can I say? You can take the girl out of St. Louis, but you can’t take the St. Louis out of the girl. Check out my interview with Genesis below!

Jason Bateman (Horrible Bosses) and Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) lead an all-star cast in this hilarious blockbuster hit. Unlimited funds have allowed Diana (McCarthy) to live it up on the outskirts of Orlando.  There’s only one glitch: she’s financing her shopping sprees with an ID stolen from Sandy Patterson (Bateman), an accounts rep who lives halfway across the U.S. With only one week to hunt down the con artist before his world implodes, the real Sandy Patterson is forced to extreme measures to clear his name.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS VS LOS ANGELES DODGERS

First off, how long did you practice that pitch?

GR: I practiced two days, about a week apart. If I made a fool out of myself, fine – but at least I tried, in my head. I don’t know what I did. I have no idea. (Laughs)

You play quite the badass in this film. How did you become involved with this film?

GR: The producers had seen CASA DE MI PADRE, and really loved it, and they asked if I would be willing to read for a part. I was like “Yeah, sure!”. I had no idea what they wanted, really, so I just kind of winged it. I came in with a super heavy accent – they didn’t ask for an accent… I came in “batshit crazy”. I remember, in my audition, I had this part where I was just talking, and I throw my things… I just went all out with it, and they were like “Ok. We really like this! You got the job!” and I was like “Ok. I had a really great time!” If I have a great time auditioning, I know I’m going to have a great time in the movie. That was the case. I had a great time. I’m not a badass. I mean, I can hardly throw a baseball for crying out loud. (Laughs) I like to be able to do that and push myself, and act, because that is total acting. I could not be like that.

You get to play around with guns in some of your films. Did you have to do any sort of training for that?

GR: I had done THE LAST STAND right before, so I had a little bit of gun training, then I jumped into this one right afterwards, so I was like “Sure. Yeah. Why not man?” They’re fun.

You’re known for your roles in soap operas. How was the crossover for you into film, and comedy?

GR: Well, I never really trained for comedy. I trained for saying ridiculous things very seriously. Like, my whole life I would have to say things like “I lost my vision” and be dead serious about it. That shit doesn’t happen! Excuse me for saying shit.

Oh no, you’re fine. I have the mouth of a sailor. You’re great! (Laughs)

GR: That was my training for comedy. To take it very seriously, and to deliver as intensely, and seriously as possible. That was pretty easy for me to do. That’s kind of what I’ve been doing in all the comedies like CASA… It was just “say ridiculous things very seriously”. This one was super intense. She didn’t even know how to pronounce her J’s (laughs) so, it was just a very easy transition.

You got to spar a bit with Melissa McCarthy in this. Did you get to improv with her, or with Tip (T.I.)?

GR: With her, no. With Tip I did. All the time. With Melissa we had to be more on book. She got to improvise a little bit more, just because of the way the story had to be told and played out.

This is his first comedic performance. He’s mostly known for his music career and his drama roles. What was your relationship with him like on set?

GR: At first I was like “How is he going to be?” because he’s this huge hip hop artist. “Is he going to be a diva? Is he going to be obnoxious? Is he not a team player?”. He was awesome. Just so easy to work with… He’s an actor! I didn’t know to how full of an extent I was ready for improv. So smart, so quick – just giving you something to feed off of. That’s what he should be doing. He should be doing more comedies. He’s hilarious.

You said you were worried about it. Have you ever had a problem with someone on set? Have you ever encountered someone being a diva?

GR: More so in my Spanish soap opera work. That was brutal. The biggest divas in the world were there. I probably had myself a diva moment there too because it was just horrible hours. You kind of get fed up. The 18 hour work days Monday through Saturday – about 7 months in you’re like “Ok, I gotta go! Let’s get this take done!”. That’s the type of attitude you start getting, but in movies it’s totally different! I don’t know. I never meet anyone like that. I certainly don’t have those feelings. It’s a Monday through Friday job, a 12 hour day – It’s pretty awesome! You get a trailer! You get to read books! You can eat candy and catering! It’s like “Dude, I don’t have to work today if you don’t want me to. I’ll wait!” I could not care!

You grew up with a singer/actor father, and a model for a mother. Do you feel like you were destined to do this? To be a part of the entertainment world? Or, was there something else you envisioned yourself doing?

GR: You know, I thought maybe I was going to be a lawyer, which is kind of acting as well. (Laughs) I was really good in school. I was in the honor program, I was in robotics, I was good in sciences… Honestly, I never took myself seriously. I never realized that I was in the public. My parents were the most humble and simple people ever. So, I never thought of myself as anything really different. I thought it was normal, what they did. I never was really interested until I took a drama class, and I realized “Holy moly! I can be different people?”. My drama teacher noticed. He never really told anyone this in class but he said “Gen, you should really consider this as a profession.” I said “I never really thought about that.” and he said “Get some training. Get some training. Go do that. I think you’ll be ok.”

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS – The Review

92271367427221-hh_imax_online (1)

Review by Dana Jung

In 2009, producer/director J.J. Abrams took the nearly impossible task of relaunching a beloved and storied franchise.  That film of course was STAR TREK, and though Abrams created an “alternate history” version of that world that both reimagined and refreshed the series, he was wise enough to recognize that the character interplay of his three leads was the most important key to the original series’ charm.

As entertaining and action-packed as it was, that first film by Abrams now seems almost a complete setup for this sequel, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.  Here Abrams and his writers,  Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof, continue deconstructing the TREK mythology, and again have succeeded in creating a vastly entertaining movie, one of the best in the entire series, and one of the best films of the year so far. As the title suggests, however, this TREK has a heavier tone than the funhouse ride of the first film.  With its themes of terrorism and self-sacrifice, Abrams and his crew have simultaneously ramped up the action quotient in DARKNESS, and taken the franchise to new levels of dramatic complexity.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

The story begins with a spectacular and fast-paced prologue that playfully nudges that old Trek plot device, the Prime Directive.  However, the young Enterprise captain Kirk (Chris Pine) soon discovers that his brash decisions during this exploit have not only tested his growing friendship with Spock (Zachary Quinto), but jeopardized his Starfleet career as well.  The consequences of choice and responsibilities of command are elements woven throughout DARKNESS, as Kirk matures as a Starfleet officer, and as Spock, McCoy (Karl Urban), and even Scotty (the fabulous Simon Pegg) all have moments of crisis to deal with.

The introduction of the villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch (SHERLOCK on BBC TV) brings a new level of danger to the world of TREK, and his actions have resonance to the terrorism we live with in the current day. Cumberbatch is excellent in his role, striking sinister notes while also engendering a great deal of empathy, if not for his cause, then for the passion with which he clings to the things he holds dear.  With this performance, Cumberbatch finally creates an adversary to the Enterprise crew that is worthy of STAR TREK (but which has been sorely lacking in many films of the series).

HH

Visually, Abrams delivers the stunning vistas of different planets, future cities on Earth, and several breathtaking action sequences, just as we expect of him.  Opening up the story to show not only Starfleet HQ in San Francisco, but also futuristic London, gives Abrams the opportunity to ground the story in a more believable world filled with people going about their daily business.  The action scenes include everything from footchases to epic space battles—there’s even a (STAR WARS-inspired?) dogfight.  The 3D effects and IMAX cinematography add tremendously to these sequences, resulting in a greater sense of depth and feeling of immediacy.  Abrams keeps his camera moving constantly and edits at near light speed to give the viewer the experience of being directly caught up in these events.  In many scenes, Abrams also takes the opportunity to illustrate the size and scope of this Enterprise starship we have almost taken for granted.  In one exciting scene after another, we are able to view the incredible open spaces and sheer immensity of the ship’s engines, including the mysterious (before now) nacelles.

The cast that enlivened the first film, really delivers the goods in DARKNESS with its more somber dramatics.  Pine is even better here playing a man who begins to question some of the decisions he makes, his self-doubt even evident on his face at times.  Quinto is again perfection as the Vulcan struggling (as we all do) with how much emotion to show.  Urban is wonderfully testy as the irascible Bones McCoy, and Pegg’s Scotty is principled but loyal to the end.  Zoe Saldana gets more involved in the action this time as Uhura, while John Cho’ Sulu and Anton Yelchin’s Chekov also have their moments.  More familiar names in the Trek icon pop up (Pike, Marcus, etc.) with Peter Weller, Bruce Greenwood, and Alice Eve fitting in nicely.

From start to finish, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is full to the brim with danger, excitement, laughs, and that timeless camaraderie we as an audience have come to know and love.  The question is, can Abrams keep up this pace, and deliver yet again with what will surely be the third installment of this saga?  As fans of the original series know, this film leaves many plotlines yet to be developed and is perfectly set up for another sequel.  If Abrams can fill that film with as much sense of drama, as much sense of humor, and as much sense of wonder that he has with STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, we’ll all be a happy audience indeed.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Official Synopsis Revealed

26 years ago today, one of the best loved and fourth installment of the Star Trek films featuring the original cast – THE VOYAGE HOME – opened in theaters. On November 26, 1986 devout Trekkers flocked to theaters to watch Kirk and company time-travel back to the twentieth century to save the Earth, rescue long-extinct humpback whales and witness the emergence of a new U.S.S. Enterprise. The film garnered four Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Music – Original Score, Best Effects – Sound Effects Editing, and Best Sound.

On May 17, 2013, the crew of the enterprise will once again venture into the unknown and today Paramount Pictures released a new and approved, official synopsis for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
