Aaron Taylor-Johnson And Director J.C. Chandor Talk Bringing KRAVEN THE HUNTER To The Big Screen In New Featurette

Hitting theaters on Friday, December 13 is KRAVEN THE HUNTER. In this this new featurette, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and director J.C. Chandor discuss the making of an old fashioned gangster story, as well as the choice to make an R-rated movie.

Official Synopsis:

Kraven the Hunter is the action-packed, R-rated, standalone story of how one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless gangster father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.

It will be interesting to see how Kraven’s half-brother is the Chameleon, whose real name is Dmitri Smerdyakov, fits into all of this.

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Kraven first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #15 (1964).

Kraven was one of the original members of The Sinister Six. This group of supervillains from Marvel Comics were the primary enemies of Spider-Man. It consisted of Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and Vulture.

Directed by J.C. Chandor, the film also features Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola and Christopher Abbott. The score is from Benjamin Wallfisch (ALIEN: ROMULUS, IT, SHAZAM!, THE INVISIBLE MAN).

KRAVEN THE HUNTER is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for the following reasons: strong bloody violence, and language.

KRAVEN THE HUNTER Trailer Features Kraven, Calypso, Chameleon And Rhino

Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film. Directed by J.C. Chandor, best known for writing and directing the films Margin Call, All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year, Triple Frontier, here’s a first look at the brand new trailer starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott and Russell Crowe.

Check out the trailer for the R-rated film.

The film has been in development since Summer 2018.

Sony has been setting up a SINISTER SIX movie since THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. At the end of 2014’s sequel starring Andrew Garfield, the film teases the appearance of the Sinister Six. The Sinister Six was to include two characters that already appeared: the Green Goblin and the Rhino, and four new additions: Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Vulture, and Mysterio.

According to MARVEL, in the comics, after consistently being defeated by Spider-Man, he joins with a pseudo family of Super Villains, the Sinister Six, led by Dr. Otto Octavius, AKA Doctor Octopus. The team includes William Baker, AKA Sandman, Adrian Toomes, AKA Vulture, Maxwell Dillon, AKA Electro, and Quentin Beck, AKA Mysterio.

Comicbook.com says: Sony Pictures was eyeing the character to be the next chapter in its shared Spider-Man universe (without Spider-Man). There have been three films released in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe thus far, with Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage holding the strongest connective tissue. 2022’s Morbius featured Jared Leto’s titular character making a brief reference to the symbiote.

News broke during the summer of 2019 that Kraven the Hunter would be getting his own film in Sony’s universe of Spider-Man spinoffs, with The Equalizer writer Richard Wenk attached to pen the script. “The writer recently confirmed initial details about the film, which includes a direct encounter with Spider-Man as well as influences from the seminal storyline “Kraven’s Last Hunt.”

Plus the story will also include Ariana DeBose as Calypso,  Alessandro Nivola as Rhino, Fred Hechinger as Dmitri Smerdyakov / Chameleon, and Christopher Abbott as Foreigner.

As Deadline reported in March 2022: As for the character Abbott will be playing, fans are sure to be excited as The Foreigner played a major part in the Spider-Man comics over the years. While he had no superhuman abilities, the mercenary/assassin is one of the more trained martial artists in all of Marvel comics. While he had rare run-ins with Kraven, he would cross paths with everyone from Spidey himself to Silver Sable (who he would later marry) to Kraven’s brother, the Chameleon. Clearly, Abbott’s appearance in this film is likely just the start of his presence in the universe going forward.

Could the friendly neighborhood Spider-man have a cameo in the film? Find out when KRAVEN THE HUNTER hits theaters on October 6, 2023.

TRIPLE FRONTIER – Review

Alright troops, ready to move out…to the multiplex. Yeah, it’s military movie time as a hardened group of Special Forces vets team up to tackle another big challenge. So, are they coming to the aid of a tiny village or town threatened by superior foreign mercenaries? Perhaps they’re being brought back together to rescue a group of innocents held captive by terrorists. Does a mad marauder have his grimy mitts on a stolen doomsday device? No, what’s brought the guys back together is green (no, not eco-terrorists), as in money, lots and lots of it. And their ex-military commanders haven’t any knowledge of this, so there aren’t any jets and battleships to offer backup or a fast exit. Those would be very handy when this former squadron must deal with a south of the border (more like south of the Equator) TRIPLE FRONTIER.

After a brief intro to part of the team, we are suddenly dropped into a police raid on a hideout for drug runners in a South American hotspot. Aiding the local authorities is former US Special Forces soldier Santiago ‘Pope’ Garcia (Oscar Isaac) as an “advisor’. At the conclusion of the destructive battle (rocket launchers, grenades, and a ton of bullets), the occupants of the now nearly demolished cafe are lined up for the police wagon that will cart them off to jail. But one young woman bolts and Pope chases her through the winding streets to no avail. Later, when he returns to his hotel room, she’s awaiting him. Yovanno (Adria Arjona) is working with Pope, providing him with important intel on local drug kingpin Lorea (she’s part of his home staff). Soon Pope is back in the US, and looking up another SF pal Tom ‘Redfly’ Davis (Ben Affleck), a soon to be divorced dad now struggling as a real estate agent. After recalling old times, Pope tells him of this new mission for themselves. They’ll break into Lorea’s compound/mansion on a Sunday morning (when his family and guards are going to mass in separate shifts), execute him, and haul away all his cash (Pope has been told that “the house is a safe”). An unsure Redfly agrees to join Pope as they meet the three other members of the old crew: pilot ‘Catfish'(Pedro Pascal), ‘Ironhead’ (Charlie Hunnam) and his brother Ben (Garrett Hedlund), an aspiring MMA fighter. After a convincing pitch, the four decide to join up with Pope, who insists there will be little danger. And what happens when God hears your plans? Despite their preparations, the five are on the run in this foreign land, dealing with the treacherous elements (the Andes mountains, torrential rains, blistering heat) and trying to avoid the angry locals, while clashing with each other over the loot. Though this mission isn’t impossible, it certainly is not a “sure thing”.

The starring quintet has a good, easy-going chemistry, despite the inclusion of two cinematic “heavy hitters” who command most of the drama. As Pope, Isaac is, once more, the “man with a plan”, the “head honcho” much like his recent role in OPERATION FINALE and his continuing character of Poe Dameron in the new STAR WARS chapters (nine months to the next). He handles the role well, always a compelling screen presence, since we can see him mentally weighing options as his expressive eyes dart about, seeking the least deadly option. Competing for the story’s focus is always interesting Affleck, another veteran of big action franchises (he’s just hung up his bat-cowl and cape), who we first encounter at nearly his lowest ebb (we can almost see his spirit leave his body as another couple declines to sign on the dotted line). Redfly is a man in conflict, wanting to leave his past, but knowing his sharpened skills are the only way to provide for his family (which is drifting away from him). He may have the most complex character arc. Within seconds of finding more loot than he ever hoped to find, an inner lever is pushed, and his morality takes a back seat. Unfortunately, the remaining trio, from lesser action flicks, are mostly one-note. Hunnam (PACIFIC RIM) is a cynical pessimistic, while his kid brother, Hedlund (PAN) is all hair-trigger bravado. Pascal (KINGSMEN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE) as Catfish the “getaway flier” is a fiery realist who’s the one that’s really “sweating the small stuff”. Aside from the “bros”, Ms. Arjona makes quite an impression with her opening scenes with Isaac, particularly in the exhausting street chase (get her an action series).

This is quite a departure for director J.C. Chandor, who co-wrote the script with Mark (ZERO DARK THIRTY) Boal, as he appears to be going for more of a mainstream action film as opposed to the character-driven high concept films like A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, ALL IS LOST, and MARGIN CALL (the last two were indie “art house” hits). The action films he’s emulating are the ones from 25 or 30 years ago with PREDATOR coming first to mind (the tough guys minus the toothy alien trophy hunter), though you can go back to THE GUNS OF NAVARONE and their ilk. There’s little to distinguish this from “big boys with big guns in the jungle” fodder that flood antenna channels like “Charge” and “Grit TV” every weekend (well these fellows spent more time on stages than in gyms). Still, a couple of the action sequences are gripping, mainly the opening drug bust, and a hair-raising helicopter ordeal in the Andes, complete with a “hard landing” (almost comparable to the copter “dog fight’ in the last MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE epic). It is somewhat “telegraphed’ as Catfish voices concerns over the weight, cut then to the “not new” chopper with a net full of bags and luggage (also filled with cash) dangling several yards under its landing gear. We know it’ll have to be cut loose, but will the onboard release switch work (three guesses)? Luckily we’re treated to excellent location work showcasing the varied terrain of Colombia. There’s just an air of missed opportunity floating through the set pieces, as though they considered doing a modern-day take on the themes of greed and obsession (best done in the iconic TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE) and opted instead for big explosions and “shoot-em-ups”. As it is, action movie buffs will enjoy but soon forget (especially with this generic title) TRIPLE FRONTIER.

A MOST VIOLENT YEAR – The Blu Review

most_violent_year-still_1-1160x480

One of the best films of 2015, A MOST VIOLENT YEAR was about New York City in its most crime-ridden year of 1981. Oscar Isaac starred as ambitious Colombian immigrant Abel Morales, who began his career as a truck driver for a heating oil biz run by a mobster whose daughter Anna (Jessica Chastain) he eventually married. Abel took over ‘Standard Heating Oil’, and grew it quickly – but too quickly in the eyes of his competitors. As the movie opened, Abel and his attorney (Albert Brooks) are on the verge of a big move – borrowing a million and a half dollars to buy two oil tanks in a prime area of Queens. With 30 days to secure the cash needed to close the deal, it’s a risky investment, but if all goes according to Abel’s plan, he will eventually be able to store and move fuel on a larger scale. But Abel’s dream soon begins to fall apart. Armed thugs, likely employed by his competitors, are assaulting his oil truck drivers and stealing the fuel. A district attorney (David ‘MLK’ Oyelowo) lets Abel know that he’s prepared to hand down corruption indictments on the company. Abel’s drivers want to carry guns for protection and Anna wants to go to her mafia-connected family for assistance. But Abel resists, insisting on doing things legally as the only thing he values more than his ambition is his honor, or as he tells his wife: “I’ve spent my whole life trying not to be a gangster.”

Writer/Director J.C. Chandor (MARGIN CALL, ALL IS LOST) has done something that I wasn’t sure was possible in this age of instant gratification: make a compelling crime movie without cheap theatrics or even a single murder. One of the most refreshing things about A MOST VIOLENT YEAR was the manner in which it combines genres in unexpected ways. The basic framework was familiar: corrupt cops, corrupt city officials, corrupt union bullies, and corrupt lawyers. But, if you thought you’d seen this story already, you received more than one surprise. Not only did Chandor throw away almost every stereotype in favor of real, three-dimensional characters, he wrote a script of unexpected intelligence and perceptiveness. For a film with the word ‘violent’ in the title, there was surprisingly little carnage, but the threat of menace was always there and the lack of bloodshed is not something you really noticed until the film is over. There was an edge-of-the-seat foot chase on the Queensboro Bridge and a terrific car pursuit when Abel spots one of his trucks being commandeered, but that action that existed to serve the story. Like the films of director Sidney Lumet, whose work Chandlor’s film echoes, A MOST VIOLENT YEAR was knowledgeable about the city of New York and the people who make accommodations with it. His script was savvy about a number of things. Not only did it have a good feel for both sides of the union corruption issue, it was aware of the political rivalries and behind-the-scenes dealmaking that keeps a city running.

Oscar Isaac’s calm, careful portrayal was one of A MOST VIOLENT YEAR’s great pleasures. The opposite of a bloodthirsty immigrant like SCARFACE’s Tony Montana, Abel was the low-key anti-gangster. Fastidious in his wardrobe and exact in his speech, Isaac’s Abel was a portrait of a man obsessed with remaining in control while staying within the law. A scene in which he tells newly-promoted sales reps precisely how to deal with prospective clients; accept tea instead of coffee, hold eye contact longer than one comfortably should, was a marvel of acting, yet Isaac rarely raised his voice or even emotes. That was left to Jessica Chastain, who played Anna as a ruthless, business-like woman who controls and manipulates her husband’s principals into the illegal model of success she grew up knowing. Hers was a complex character and a startling, show-stealing performance that I’m stunned was passed over for a supporting Oscar nod.

MostViolentYear-2014-1

Thematically, A MOST VIOLENT YEAR blended the detailed union workings of ON THE WATERFRONT with THE GODFATHER’s notions of loyalty and family. Much is made of the bond between boss and employee, and we get to feel the weight of what these men feel for each other, making the necessary betrayals later on that much more significant. This was a picture that’s at times exciting, at times meditative, never boring and always engaging.

Lionsgate releases A MOST VIOLENT YEAR on Blu-ray April 7th and We Are Movie Geeks has had a peek:

Most-Violent-Year

The A MOST VIOLENT YEAR Blu-ray features a faithful, notably filmic 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer with very little to criticize. Keeping with the ‘70s vibe, the Blu-ray offers an altogether sound, albeit purposefully subdued presentation backed by striking desaturated colors, relatively lifelike skintones, smoky but satisfying black levels and finely tuned contrast. Grain is intact as well, without anything in the way of unevenness or errant noise, and detail is quite strong. There also isn’t any significant artifacting, or aliasing display, meaning A MOST VIOLENT YEAR’s Blu-ray debut falls perfectly in line with its theatrical presentation.

Lionsgate’s DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is more involving than I anticipated, and quite a bit more aggressive. Great weight and intensity are brought to scenes that benefit greatly from both – the ambient city sounds, the occasional gunshot and tire squeal, and the hushed, low-key dialog are all brought to life. Alex Ebert’s unobtrusive score rounds out the soundscape.

The A MOST VIOLENT YEAR Blu-ray is fleshed out with a healthy does of extras:

–Audio Commentary with Writer/Director J.C. Chandor and Producers Neal Dodson and Anna Gerb
–Behind the Violence
–A Conversation with Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac
–The Contagious Nature of Violence: The Origins of A Most Violent Year
–Deleted Scenes
–Inner City Crew Outtakes

Golden Globe winning composer/singer/songwriter Alex Ebert scores A24’s dark crime drama. Ebert returned to work with Chandor following the success of their previous collaboration, ALL IS LOST.

With a sound indicative of era, Ebert’s score uses piano, synth, and percussion to capture the tension and emotional pressure faced by Isaac’s Abel Morales, as he fights to protect his business and family.

“America for Me” is Ebert’s avant garde original song for the film highlighting the dark side of achieving the American Dream, where best intentions yield to raw instinct. Ebert’s experience working on A MOST WANTED YEAR was unlike any of his previous film endeavors.

With the film examining Morales’ determined climb up a morally crooked ladder, caught up in simmering rivalries and unprovoked attacks that threaten his business, family, and his belief in the righteousness of his path, Ebert was inspired to musically capture this struggle with “America for Me.” “This experience transformed the way I think about music,” stated Ebert.

A MOST WANTED YEAR will be in NY and LA on December 31, 2014 and will expand in January 2015.
