PRINCESS MONONOKE (subtitled) plays midnights this weekend (June 7th and 8th) at the Tivoli (6350 Delmar in St. Louis’ Loop) as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

Hayao Miyazaki’s PRINCESS MONONOKE (1997) is reportedly a delightful anime from the man who has come to define everything that is best about the genre, I’ve never seen it, but Miyazaki always brings in the crowds for the midnight shows so I’m sure it’s a worthy choice. PRINCESS MONONOKE was Miyazaki’s calling card to the world outside Japan. The English voice cast boasts Billy Crudup, Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Gillan Anderson and Keith David – a considerable volume of talent for an animation back in 1997 (TOY STORY was 1995), arguably marking the beginning of another trend – for big names to be heard and not seen. Essentially a statement on the ecological devastation brought on by human advancement, the story follows the battle between Princess Mononoke and a mining village.

Now you can experience some Miyazaki madness when PRINCESS MONONOKE plays on the big screen this weekend (June 7th and 8th) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

Hayao Miyazaki’s HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE Screens Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

“You’re wearing that hat? After all the magic I used to make your dress pretty”

HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE (subtitled) plays midnights this weekend (May 25th and 26th) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

St. Louis has Ghibli fever (sounds serious!) and the only cure is…..a midnight show of a Hayao Miyazaki movie! The ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ midnight series books a Miyazaki film every quarter and it always packs ‘em in. This weekend, it’s his 2004 epic HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE.

HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE is set in a fantasy version of Europe where magic and technology coexist. Sophie is a young girl in a small town of a nation on the verge of war; she is very mature and responsible but is also very shy and unconfident. One night she is visited by the Witch of Watse, and transformed into an old woman. Since the curse forbids her to speak about the curse itself, she decides to go and find a way to return to her real age by herself, but in her quest she ends up in the fabled Moving Castle of the legendary wizard Howl, who is said to be a cruel ruthless monster. She will discover that Howl is very different than what legends say.

Of course, the animation is top-notch like Studio Ghibli usually does. The beautiful landscapes inspired by European towns and cities make a great contrast with the advanced technology and the visually stunning magic of this fantastic world. The Moving Castle, a walking metal behemoth, is at the same time imposing and strangely beautiful. There is no scene in the movie that is not either beautiful, mesmerizing or both. The animation by itself is a work of art. Don’t miss HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE when it screens this Friday and Saturday

STUDIO GHIBLI FEST, a nine film monthly series of anime classics, continues in March with PONYO from the legendary Studio Ghibli and Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki. This special event will play in movie theaters nationwide for three days only on March 25, 26 and 28.

From the legendary Studio Ghibli, creators of Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, and Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki, comes a heartwarming family adventure. When Sosuke, a young boy who lives on a clifftop overlooking the sea, rescues a stranded goldfish named Ponyo, he discovers more than he bargained for. Ponyo is a curious, energetic young creature who yearns to be human, but even as she causes chaos around the house, her father, a powerful sorcerer, schemes to return Ponyo to the sea. Fathom Events STUDIO GHIBLI FEST Continues with KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE July 23rd-24th

STUDIO GHIBLI FEST 2017 continues with KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE on Sunday July 23rd at 1pm (dubbed) and Monday July 24th at 7pm (subtitled) For details and a list of participating theaters, go HERE

Kiki is now thirteen, and it is now her right as a witch to leave home and move to another town to start her training as a witch for one year. Accompanying her is her black cat Jiji; a very cynical, negative feline. Moving to a seaside town in France, Kiki acquires a room in the attic of a Bakery. She works in the there but soon starts her own business; a delivery service. A love interest ensues with Tombo, a young boy who dreams of making his own flying machine. Love also comes for Jiji in the neighbors white cat. It is interesting to note that KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE was not written directly by Hayao Miyazaki, nor was it is based on anything of his creation. It is, atypically, adapted from the work of a different writer, and therefore some of the differences between this film and other Miyazaki works can be traced to the source. Needless to say, KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE is another gem from the Studio Ghibli factory. It’s one that fans of the great Japanese animator will never tire of revisiting and one that always draws a smile. Those in search of something uplifting should give this one a chance otherwise you don’t know what you’re missing.

GKIDS, the acclaimed distributor of multiple Academy Award-nominated animated features, and Fathom Events, are proud to announce a partnership to bring the biggest series of anime titles to U.S audiences throughout 2017. STUDIO GHIBLI FEST 2017 is a first-of-its-kind monthly series featuring six iconic animated classics from legendary director Hayao Miyazaki. In addition to big screen presentations of these larger-than-life films, each event will also feature an exclusive edition of GKIDS Mini-Fest, an ongoing showcase of some of the best short animation from around the world.

MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO was made back in 1988 and tells the story of Mr. Kusakabe and his two daughters Satsuki and Mei who move to a new home in rural Japan so they could be close to their sick mother. Their new home is run down and filled with soot spirits, but the family soon settles in. One day Mei meets a strange giant creature called Totoro, a large furry animal who has two minions. No one believes Mei at first but after Mei disappears Satsuki has to call Totoro for help. MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO is a strange little film, but Miyazaki does have an understanding of a child’s imagination (either that or he takes a lot drugs). There is a certain Alice in Wonderland feel about the film, with Mei going down a hole and Totoro and the Catbus (one of the weirdest ideas ever) looking like the Chester Cat. But the main focus of the film is the relationship between the young girls and the father who is obviously overwhelmed with his caring for them, having a wife in hospital and continuing with his job. The children are energetic and believable and the film is about the wonders of a child’s imagination.

In addition to big screen presentations of these larger-than-life films, each event will also feature an exclusive edition of GKIDS Mini-Fest, an ongoing showcase of some of the best short animation from around the world.

Following the success of the Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke cinema events, GKIDS, the acclaimed distributor of multiple Academy Award-nominated animated features, and Fathom Events, are proud to announce a partnership to bring the biggest series of anime titles to U.S audiences throughout 2017.

Starting in June, the series features six of Studio Ghibli’s revered animated classics offering both dubbed and subtitled versions.

We all know Hayao Miyazaki is an anime genius, creating stories focusing on character, story and fantasy, letting his imagination run wild. He has created great films like SPIRITED AWAY, HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, and PRINCESS MONONOKE. One of his first great works, MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO, will be screening at the Tivoli in St. Louis this Friday and Saturday nights.

MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO is a strange little film, but Miyazaki does have an understanding of a child’s imagine (either that or he takes a lot drugs).
