WELCOME TO MARWEN – Review

The mysteries of the human brain have fascinated filmmakers (and filmgoers) since the earliest days of cinema. Of course, the subject has been fodder for countless horror and science fiction films with variations on iconic literature works such as Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr, Hyde. These also inspired comedies such as THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS and THE NUTTY PROFESSOR, among others. But there have also been several fact-based, or “inspired by real events” films centering on brain diseases and injuries, exploring how catastrophic trauma affects those individuals. CONCUSSION from 2015 dramatized the very real cases of veteran football players who took hits to the head that caught up to them years later. Then there are the injuries to the brain that, like a computer keyboard, “pushes the delete button” with delusions and fantasy replacing the horrific memories. That’s exactly what happens to the real man profiled in the new film. But rather than escaping to famous fictional locales like Oz or Pandora, he retreats to a place he created. To paraphrase the great late Rod Serling, “There’s the signpost up ahead”, proclaiming WELCOME TO MARWEN.

The story begins as a WWII bomber makes a rough landing, nearly engulfing the pilot in flames. As “Cap’n Hogie” jumps clear we see that he is actually a doll (sorry, action figure) who walks and talks on his own. As are the gang of Nazi soldiers that ambush him. Luckily Hogie has “back up’, a quartet of beautiful female resistance fighters who mow down the “goose-steppers”. Suddenly they freeze as we hear a click. Zooming out we see that the toys are being positioned and photographed by a man, Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell) in the field outside his upper New York state home, next to the miniature city of Marwen, Belgium that he’s constructed. A moving van at the house across the street has ruined his shot. Luckily the new neighbor is a lovely single lady named Nicol (Leslie Mann), yes no “e”. We learn Mark’s backstory by the photos and scrapbook inside his home. And that’s all he has left to recall his past life, the life before a gang of thugs (one had a swastika arm tattoo) beat him so badly outside the local bar, the Avalanche, that Mark lost his memories, his artistic abilities (he was an artist on WWII comic books) and had to learn to walk once more. Photos from the hospital stay show an Iraqui war vet, GI Julie (Janelle Monae) guiding him through rehab. The quiet is soon disrupted by Mark’s visiting nurse, the load forceful Russian woman named Anna (Gwendoline Christie). The rest of the day Marks divides between visiting the local hobby shop run by Roberta (Merritt Wever) who orders the special WWII models and figures for him, then returning to the Avalanche where he works as a janitor and helps the chef Carlala (Eiza Gonzalez), who aided him on that fateful night. He’s also preparing for an art show of his toy photos that Roberta has set up for him in an NYC gallery, as his attorney implores him to attend the sentencing hearing of his attackers so that he may read a victim’s statement. As the pressures build, Mark spends more time in the make-believe world of Marwen where he’s the heroic Hogie and all the above-named women are his fighting pals (just pals, though). As he becomes friends with Nicol, she also joins the adventures, but more than a pal. But the sinister sorceress Dejah (Diane Kruger) threatens Hogie’s new love. As the court date looms, can Mark break away from his fantasy and finally face the reality of his new life, and perhaps start over with Nicol?

With superb work most recently in BEAUTIFUL BOY and VICE, Carell has proved himself equally adept at both drama and comedy, so he’d seem a natural for this role which combines plenty of both. As Capn’ Hogie he gets to parody the square-jawed dashing hero of many a TCM marathon. Mark requires a delicate touch showing his vulnerability, while also portraying his struggle to overcome the many physical and mental challenges stemming from the vicious assault. Carell shows us his frustrations which can either shut all his emotions down (doing his art, he seems to enter another sensory plane) or cause him to panic and revert to “flight” mode. Outside of Marwen, Carell even gives Mark a charming suitor stance as he opens up to the understanding Nicol. Mann, working with Carell for the first time since 2005’s THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, has a sweet relaxed chemistry with him making for several natural quiet moments. But for all her welcoming qualities, Nicol is still a mystery. With the help of some photos and furnishings, Mann shows us that Nicol has also dealt with tragedy as she faces the future with hope and optimism. Unfortunately, the other fine actresses don’t have roles written as intriguing as her. Two time Emmy winner Wever tries to make the determined Roberta compelling, but she becomes the too accommodating doormat to Mark, who degrades her in his fantasy world (somehow her blouse is always torn). Two up and coming talents, Gonzalez and Monae have very little to do outside of Marwen (the later is only in human form for a few seconds). Then there’s the dazzling Kruger, who alternates between silky temptress and shrieking harpy as the witchy Dejah (and why does she share a name with Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Princess of Mars in the John Carter series).

Director of many classic film fantasies, Robert Zemeckis, tries to meld the fable and reality with wildly uneven results. After a few years respite, he returns to motion-capture (mo-cap) technology (THE POLAR EXPRESS, BEOWULF, and A CHRISTMAS CAROL) for the zippy, inventive WWII sequences which feel like a Rankin/Bass TV special based on Marvel’s “Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos” comics. The faces feel so alive while retaining that sculpted plastic sheen as their “ball and socket” joined arms and legs flail about and grip all manner of weapons as their stitched clothing flaps in the wind. They look especially great as they jump to life-size in a nifty courtroom battle scene. Ah, but the real world is not nearly as slick and fun, or…interesting. Without allowing us to get to know the pre-attack Mark, he’s fairly one-note. The script from Zemeckis and Caroline Thompson seems more content with making him a martyr, punished for his clothing quirks (ala’ ED WOOD). The attempts at pathos become mawkish and eventually dull. And what does Dejah really represent? His fears? Society’s hate toward misfits? And in a perplexing scene, she is tied into a clumsy “call back” to Zemeckis’s greatest movie triumph (as they say in that flick, “That’s heavy, Doc”). The whole thing just lurches and lumbers from one set piece to the next until it just skids and comes to a thudding halt. Maybe its documentary source MARWENCOL makes more sense because WELCOME TO MARWEN is more of a dull dramatic dead end.

Win Passes To The St. Louis Advance Screening Of WELCOME TO MARWEN

This holiday season, Academy Award® winner Robert Zemeckis—the groundbreaking filmmaker behind Forrest Gump, Flight and Cast Away—directs Steve Carell in the most original movie of the year. Welcome to Marwen tells the miraculous true story of one broken man’s fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit.

When a devastating attack shatters Mark Hogancamp (Carell) and wipes away all memories, no one expected recovery. Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation—a testament to the most powerful women he knows—through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one.

In a bold, wondrous and timely film from this revolutionary pioneer of contemporary cinema, Welcome to Marwen shows that when your only weapon is your imagination…you’ll find courage in the most unexpected place.

The epic drama is produced by Oscar®-winning producer Steve Starkey (Forrest Gump, Flight), Jack Rapke (Cast Away, Flight), and Cherylanne Martin (The Pacific, Flight) of Zemeckis’ Universal-based ImageMovers banner produce alongside the director. It is executive produced by Jacqueline Levine, as well as Jeff Malmberg, who directed the riveting 2010 documentary that inspired the film.

THE DARKEST MINDS – Review

Well, we thought we were finally safe. “We” being movie audiences, in case you wondered. Just a few weeks into the new year saw the final installment of the film franchise culled from the MAZE RUNNER book series. With DIVERGENT and HUNGER concluded long ago, the scourge of movies based on young adult novels (or a series) set in a dystopian future seems to have run its course. Looks like we were wrong. With just over a month left in the Summer blockbuster season, the folks at Fox have scooped up the film rights to yet another set of YA novels (those things gobble up sections of chain bookstores like starving locusts). Here’s another group of plucky, photogenic teens (and pre-teens) ready to outsmart and fight the system run by the evil elders whose dark motives emanate from THE DARKEST MINDS.

The character voice-over narrator (if you recall ADAPTATION, you know we’re off to a shaky start) fills us in on the day that changed “everything” six years ago. Ten year-old Ruby sees a classmate convulse, crush a metal cup without touching it, and collapse, lifeless onto the school cafeteria floor. She was the first victim of the new disease known as “I.A.A.N.” (which stands for….eh, doesn’t matter), which proceeds to wipe out nearly all the children of the world. Ruby’s one of the lucky (or is she) survivors. But those who don’t perish develop “abilities’ and are rounded up by government thugs and sent to “rehabilitation” camps. This even happens to the son of President Gray (Bradley Whitford, perhaps hiding behind a big grey beard), Clancy (Patrick Gibson). When her parents suddenly don’t recognize her, Ruby is scooped up and taken to one of the camps. Six years later, Ruby (Amandla Stenberg) is taken to one of the camp’s doctors who tests her for abilities. The unusually helpful doc explains to her (and us) the different ways that I.A.A.N.affected kids via a big bright chart. The poster’s inverted pyramid (looking like the “love child” of the basic food group pyramid and Homeland Security’s threat level guide) shows four colors to code the danger levels. The bottom two, yellow and blue, can be controlled (involving telekinesis and electricity manipulation). The top two, orange and red, are most deadly. The doc is stunned to see that she’s an “orange” (who’d thunk it). Before he can give her a (literal) “killer” needle shot, she grabs his arm and unleashes her “power”, with her eyes emitting glowing orange circles (aha). Seems that Ruby’s “gift” is a combo of Obi-Wan’s old “Jedi mind trick (“These aren’t the droids…”) and Kal-El’s amnesia kiss from SUPERMAN II. Luckily Ruby is aided in her escape by a sympathetic doctor, Cate (Mandy Moore), who is is part of an underground order called “The Children’s League”. But after they leave the camp, Ruby learns of the league’s methods (she can also see somebody’s past via touch) and bolts. When she runs into a mute pre-teen electric charger named Zu (Miya Cech), Ruby follows her to a van occupied by two other teens on the run: snarky pessimistic “Chubs” (oops, I haven’t earned the right to call him that…an annoying ‘call-back” bit) Charles (Skylan Brooks) and hunky telekinetic Liam (Harris Dickinson). The foursome soon hit the road, evading “tracers”, bounty hunters including the “queen” Lady Jane (Gwendoline Christie), while trying to locate the hidden sanctuary/commune run by the famous “Slip Kid” (given that nickname after he escaped multiple captors). But is this paradise truly a safe shelter from those wishing to find and eliminate the survivors? Or perhaps, to quote Admiral Akbar (hey two Star Wars riffs), “It’s a trap!”

The cast of big screen newcomers and veterans struggle to overcome this meandering, cliche-ridden SF/ teen angst drek. Sternberg’s Ruby is a more pro-active character than her sheltered Maddy in last year’s turgid teen romance EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING, and despite the confines of the YA genre (she was in the first HUNGER GAMES) the young actress has real star power. Here’s hoping the her next role in the highly anticipated THE HATE U GIVE will better showcase her blossoming talents. Unfortunately there’s little chemistry on screen with Dickinson as Liam, who seems as though he’s being groomed as the next “heart-throb du jour”, a mix of the non-threatening Ansel Elgort and Nick Robinson (former Sternberg co-star) and the lanky physicality of Liam Hemsworth. Plus he looks somewhat silly as he uses his powers, echoing the stern concentration of Andrew Stevens in THE FURY and the lead in a high school stage production of “Dracula” (with a smidge of young Magneto). He’s a hunk and a bit of a “lunk”. And he doesn’t connect well with his verbal sparring partner, Brooks as Chubs (is that supposed to be “ha ha” funny ironic because he’s slender). He doesn’t appear to have much of a gift, aside from a “green thumb” (“A green Bell pepper is a red Bell pepper, you dips*#t!”) and a sour disposition, distrustful of everything, especially Ruby. Gibson is snarky and sinister as he channels James Spader in PRETTY IN PINK when trying to be menacing, a “frat boy” super-villain. Cech quickly assumes the adoring kid sister role to Ruby, unless she’s doing her battery charger skill (after whipping off a pair of bright yellow rubber dish washing gloves). As for the screen vets, why would Whitford follow up his role in two of last year’s most acclaimed films, GET OUT and THE POST, with one of this year’s…well? He’s smart to be absent after the first act, at least. Christie, last seen as Captain Phasma in last year’s EPISODE EIGHT, is here to don a leather jacket, snarl, and drive as though she’s trying out for the next FAST AND THE FURIOUS as tracer Lady Jane (what’s with the royal moniker). And Ms. Moore, who has a big following from her hit TV show “This is Us” squanders her time away from that in a confusing, underwritten character with unclear intentions. And to her credit, like Whitford, she too disappears for a good chunk (maybe an hour) of this nonsense.

This is most disastrous live-action feature directing debut for Jennifer Yuh Nelson, best known for helming the second and third KUNG FU PANDA movies. This flick just lurches from one limp action set piece to the next, losing any momentum with its insipid romantic sub plot, even screeching to halt in order to have a “trying on silly clothes” montage at a shuttered mall (still lotsa’ stuff there somehow) just after a big “make-over” scene (Zu has a pretty red prom dress, that just happens to fit Ruby), while some forgettable pop tunes assault the soundtrack. I shouldn’t be too hard on Nelson, since she’s burdened with a wretched , unfocused script from Chad Hodge (his feature debut, too) adapting the novel from Alexandra Bracken (wonder how close it is to her work). It does borrow generously from other YA best sellers, including a love triangle ripped right from the TWILIGHT series along with the fast escapes of the MAZE RUNNER, along with liberal doses of CARRIE, FIRESTARTER, and the X-MEN dynasty. This is most evident in the ridiculous showdown near the finale that has the feds (all with gravelly voices), many with full black stocking masks, attacking with high tech copters, sound-blasting bazookas and the dreaded “red” survivors who are on chain leashes like rabid werewolves with hoods over their heads resembling massive game falcons. And what do they do? Why they shoot fire out of their mouths, of course. Yes, teenage human flame throwers. But it’s not over then. For the last minutes we get a montage that includes a visual of one of Ruby’s powers that meshes the “Thanos snap” with the black “inky” aliens of ARRIVAL, as the producers set up an EMPIRE STRIKES BACK-style cliffhanger, promising further tales of these tortured teens. But the real suffering is that of movie audiences unfortunate to sit through this. Only THE DARKEST MINDS would subject us to a follow-up to the rock bottom of the YA novel-based movies.

10 Best Things About STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Trailer

“There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The Dark Side… and the Light.”

On Friday, the collective Force of the internet geeked out over the first look at J.J. Abrams’ STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. December 2015 can’t come soon enough!

Noticeably absent from the 88 second teaser: Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, and Domhnall Gleeson as well original trilogy stars Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill.

Whether you watched it on Friday morning on the big screen, laptop or on your smart phone, the return of Star Wars gave fans (and Wookiees) goosebumps.

Seeing as we’re excited as HELL over the brand new footage, we decided to go over the 10 must-see highlights from the early teaser. “This will be a day long remembered.”

1 & 2. The Millenium Falcon vs The TIE Fighters

The spectacular flying scene delivers a one-two punch. Our hearts skipped a beat when we saw the ship that made the Kessel Run in “less than twelve parsecs” as well as the dreaded ships from the Imperial Fleet.

3. Tri-Lightsaber with a Sith Lord?

Or is it really a Jedi Knight? Maybe Adam Driver? Whatever the case, we’re in. We loved Darth Maul wielding a double-bladed lightsaber in STAR WARS Episode I: THE PHANTOM MENACE, but this triple bladed, medieval swordlike saber is off the chain!

4. John Boyega as a Stormtrooper

The first character that appears on the screen in the teaser is that of John Boyega. Why is he a stormtrooper and where is he – Tatooine? Wouldn’t it be great if this is all just some elaborate pretense and Boyega is actually one of the heroes of the new trilogy!

5. Stormtroopers

“We ran into some old friends.” We were left grinning by the soldiers from George Lucas’s Galactic Empire. Could Boyega be the Stormtrooper standing center in the picture above?

6. X-wing Fighters

The squadron flying in formation. A new planet in the STAR WARS universe. Consider ourselves sold!

7. First look at Oscar Isaac

And in an X-wing Fighter! Featured as one of the pilots from the Rebel Alliance, the actor is a great addition to the new chapter. But what’s with his war-torn helmet?

8. Droids

“These aren’t the Droids you’re looking for.” But the cute soccer ball shaped Droid is. We loved this first glance at R2-D2 2.0.

9. Daisy Ridley and the Landspeeder/Podracer

While not confirmed, the Princess Leia/Han Solo offspring has the gusto of the original characters from STAR WARS Episode IV: A NEW HOPE. The fantastic and familiar sound of her speeder was just icing on the cake.

10. John Williams theme music – old and new

The music. They got us with the music.
