THANKSGIVING – Review

Thanksgiving Parade from TriStar Pictures and Spyglass Media Group, LLC THANKSGIVING

Back in 2007, Quentin Tarantino rounded up some pals for a release called GRINDHOUSE, intended to re-create the experience of going to a drive-in for a schlocky double feature, complete with jingles for the snack bar and fake trailers for other movies. Funny thing about the way that turned out.

The GRINDHOUSE package did fairly well at the box office but the trailers eventually outstripped its performance by a wide margin. Robert Rodriguez’s MACHETE clip turned into two wildly successful (okay, highly successful for most, wildly for me) comedic gore-fests, with a third on the way, and boosting Danny Trejo into the stratosphere of celebrity status. HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN (great title, pretty entertaining movie) became a cultish outing for Rutger Hauer. Two other trailers stayed as such – Edgar Wright’s DON’T and Rob Zombie’s WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE S.S. Eli Roth’s THANKSGIVING teaser preview is now the third of the quintet (HOBO wasn’t included in all versions of the GRINDHOUSE release) to spawn features.

In the others, much of what was in the trailers was repeated in the movies. Same for THANKSGIVING, though the original was set in the 1970s, and this one is current. Patrick Dempsey plays the sheriff in this holiday horror/comedy yarn. The family that owns a big box store in Plymouth, Massachusetts, opens its Black Friday sale on Thursday night, causing anger among many, and a mob of customers waiting outside to rush in for the bargains the moment the doors open. When the owner’s (Rick Hoffman) teen daughter Jess (Nell Verlaque) and some of her friends are seen through the glass doors jumping the gun, the crowd goes nuts and storms the store, killing and injuring quite a few of their fellow townsmen while fighting each other for the merch they crave.

Skip ahead a year. The disaster led to multiple lawsuits and claims by the victims, spurring gestures of atonement by the ownership that still left many grudges simmering. The town, as usual, celebrates its Pilgrim heritage with a parade, and many people donning those period costumes, including masks of their first mayor, bearing a fortuitous (for the audience) resemblance to the face covering on the dude from V FOR VENDETTA. Despite the previous disaster, they plan to open on Thanksgiving night again, but with more security in place. Many are displeased. Or worse.

The early social satire about greed, consumerism and Black Friday feeding frenzies soon yields to standard slasher traditions, as a mayorally-masked figure starts killing folks off in a variety of gruesome ways, with the owning family and those young friends primarily targeted. In a mashup of the SCREAM and FINAL DESTINATION franchises, there’s suspense in “who was that masked man?” and delightfully complex and graphic methods for racking up his (or possibly her) body count. The faint of heart should pick another movie.

Roth’s concept unfortunately outpaces its execution. The entire cast consists of all the standard types doing all the standard things in completely unmemorable ways. Some of it seems like an homage; at other times, a grimly amusing genre spoof. Also, most of the proceedings are severely under-lit – presumably to ramp up the foreboding factor, but actually obscuring the action, leaving viewers less sure of who did what to whom in more than a few scenes. Given Roth’s solid horror credentials, including CABIN FEVER and the HOSTEL series, one might reasonably expect a punchier finished product. Despite its shortcomings – including an odd ending – slasher fans will still find about as much carnage as they expected when they bought the tickets. And isn’t that what matters most?

THANKSGIVING opens Friday, Nov 17, in theaters.

Grind House

Time to revisit the days of the double feature when GRINDHOUSE (2007) plays at the Tivoli Friday and Saturday as part of the Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight film series this weekend (May 2nd and 3rd).

grindhouse_1

THE BEAST MUST DIE with THE SPECTRE OF EDGAR ALLEN POE. OLD DRACULA with SQUIRM. THE DEVIL’S RAIN with THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION. These are just a few of the many double features I saw on the big screen back in the 1970’s (not to mention the hundreds of double and triple features I caught at the drive-ins back then) –now’s your chance to relive those days

grindhouse2

Grindhouse was incredibly risky, and for that it paid the price of box-office disappointment. I don’t know many people who liked both PLANET TERROR and DEATHPROOF equally. Yes, they’re both exploitation pictures, but one’s a zombie movie and the other is a gear head horror flick. The real joy of seeing GRINDHOUSE — and yes, I mean the experience, not PLANET TERROR or DEATHPROOF in their separate editions — is the production values of the production and how they perfectly mimic the quality and aesthetic sensibilities of all the popcorn crunchers that were fixtures of drive-ins and urban theaters in the early to mid ’70s. If you don’t get a smile on your face seeing the multi-colored concentric circle wash of the title cards for “Prevues (sic) of Coming Attractions” and “Our Feature Presentation” then you weren’t there, and that’s going to take away some of the appeal. The trailers are hilarious — from the growling narrator over the “MACHETE” preview to the awesomely bad slasher-film era parody “THANKSGIVING” (when are they going to make that into a feature?) to the hilarious lampoon of the trailer for “DON’T…..! They even have a still montage of food from a local Tex Mex joint!

If you long for the days of the drive-in, complete with scratchy film stocks, cigarette burns, missing reels, and crackly soundtracks, GRINDHOUSE is the real deal (sort of).

The Tivoli ‘Reel Late’ Midnight Series Begins April 4th

tivoli-midnights-560

A tribute to hometown boy (not really, but kinda sorta) Harold Ramis, a Hayao Miyazaki classic from 1988, and a handful of standards make up the roster for the Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series which starts up again April 4th. No black and white classics or anything pre-1977, which is not surprising since VERTIGO and even CASABLANCA were poorly attended last year. This is a solid line-up though and I’m glad to see the return of REPO! With its live shadow cast – it’s always a good time.

Reel Late at the Tivoli takes place every Friday and Saturday night and We Are Movie Geeks own Tom Stockman (that’s me!) will be there each night with custom trivia questions about the films and always has DVDs, posters, and other cool stuff to give away. Review: MACHETE

“Machete don’t text.”

Danny Trejo is Machete, a former Federal agent who’s organization completely betrayed him. Their leader Torrez (Steven Seagal), killed his family and left him to die. Machete isn’t going out that easily. He resurfaces as a Mexican laborer just as a revolution is brewing. The local senator (Robert DeNiro) and his gang of renegade bandits (Lead by Don Johnson) are trying to stop immigration by any means necessary. This includes investigating a local taco stand that they believe to be the headquarters for an immigration ring, lead by Luz (Michelle Rodriguez). Machete is now being hunted and targeted by the bad guys, while being encouraged to fight for his people. Mix all of this together and you are in for one hell of a ride.

Let’s just start out by giving props to Danny Trejo. He is one of the most recognized character actors in the world and he certainly deserves his time in the limelight. I can not think of any other actor that could have played the role of Machete better than he did. The movie itself was a perfect Grindhouse movie. It was funny, some of the effects and lines were purposely bad or cheesy, and there were boobs. THERE WERE LINDSAY LOHAN BOOBS. Some speculate that she used a body double… but there is one scene that you can clearly see things through her hair. I guess the naked shots were there to cover her bad acting. I still can’t decide if her acting was bad because it was suppose to be, or if she’s just lost her touch. Either way, she fit her role in the film.

Michelle Rodriguez is always spot on. I honestly can’t think of one role where I didn’t like her. (Even if the movie itself was horrible.) She is perfect as Luz, as well as her alter ego ‘SHE’. Rodriguez a vulnerable side, a sexy side, and a side that says “I don’t care who you are, I can kick you ass.” Jessica Alba, on the other hand, is iffy to me. Sometimes she really shines in a role, and sometimes she is just plain horrible. I felt that she was just okay in this one. Her wig was HORRIBLE, and some of her dialog didn’t really flow. Yet again, not sure if it was suppose to be that bad or not. Still, I didn’t hate her in the role. DeNiro can certainly play the part of a redneck well. I think one of my favorite casting decisions was marketing Don Johnson as ” And Introducing Don Johnson”. It was clever, and pretty darn funny. Seagal was purposely left for last. I don’t get him. I don’t get his voice, I don’t get his stupid hair, and I certainly don’t get his wacky wardrobe… but all of those things combined made him perfect for this film. Jeff Fahey was way better in this than his role as the pilot in Lost. Hmm… two actors in this movie were in Lost. I like it!

Mr. Rodriguez… you are a genius! I could go into a long description of why you rock, but there are just so many that I will leave it at a HIGH FIVE! (Air slap!)

GO SEE THIS MOVIE! This isn’t my opinion… YOU NEED TO GO SEE IT! If you don’t, you will make a puppy cry. Do you want that on your conscious?
