‘Good Dick’ DVD & Signed Poster Contest

good dick

‘Good Dick’ was one of my favorite films of last year. It is a great indie comedy starring Jason Ritter and Marianna Palka, who also wrote and directed it. I wrote a glowing review of the film when I first saw it and then had a chance to do an awesome interview with Jason and Marianna a little while after after. A few weeks ago, they self-released a limited edition copy of the DVD, which will soon be out of print because the film just hit stores on September 1st. We have a copy of the original limited edition DVD to give away along with a signed mini-poster for the film. The poster is signed by both Jason and Marianna.

In order to win, you have to get creative. An element of the film is Marianna’s character’s love for bad softcore porn. So we want you to come up with the best porn title you can think of. Try to keep it clean, or at least clean-ish. In other words, don’t try to submit Huge Black   C***s with Pearly White C**. That Kevin Smith reference won’t earn you any extra points with us anyway because we aren’t judging the contest. Our very special celebrity guest judge for this contest is Martin Starr, who appears in the film as a video store clerk. We’ll keep this contest going until the middle of the month.

Good Luck!

DVD Review: ‘Good Dick’

good-dick-3

A few months ago, I named Good Dick one of my favorite films of 2008. I attended a screening back in October and had the chance to meet Marianna Palka and Jason Ritter afterwards. Marianna wrote, directed and starred in the film, along with Jason and they both produced it. You can see my review of the film right  HERE. You can also listen to my interview with Jason and Marianna  HERE.

A few weeks ago, the film went for sale online at the official Good Dick website. I received my copy in the mail a few days ago and finally had the chance to check it out. This is a special first edition copy that is only available for purchase on the website. As soon as you put the DVD in your player, you are greeted by Marianna and Jason in a short video introduction. After that, you are taken to a menu where you can choose to watch the film or some deleted scenes. The deleted scenes are a mix of cut scenes, alternate takes and extended scenes. If you enjoy the film, I recommend you check them out. There are some nice little moments buried in there, such as one character’s rental history love letter.

You can buy your copy at www.GoodDickTheFilm.com, which has recently been completely redone to include videos, links, a “sexy list† and more information about the film. Go check it out and buy a copy of this great film. It is being self-distributed so help support indie cinema and buy your copy. If you are more into freebies, we will be giving away 2 copies of the film + signed 11×17 posters to 2 lucky winners. The posters are currently signed by Jason Ritter and Marianna Palka but I may be meeting with Martin Starr this week to sign them as well. I will post the contest for that very soon.

‘Good Dick’ Out Now on DVD

Good Dick

A few months ago I brought you THIS review of the film ‘Good Dick’ starring Jason Ritter and Marianna Palka, who also wrote and directed it. I absolutely loved the film; giving it a 4.5 rating. It was funny and well written, with interesting characters brought to life by great actors. I was lucky enough to meet Jason and Marianna after seeing the film and I later interviewed them for WAMG. You can hear our extremely long but hopefully fascinating interview right HERE. I am very happy to tell you that the film has finally been released on DVD. As Marianna and Jason told me, they are self-distributing the film. It is currently only available through the online store on their official website. In the store you can buy a limited edition first run DVD of the film, which features a special message from the filmmakers and deleted scenes. In our interview, Marianna mentioned that she had hilarious deleted scenes, a lot of which were Martin Starr improvising, that she planned to put on the DVD. I will be ordering my DVD very soon and I suggest you all do the same. Visit the film’s official website (www.gooddickthefilm.com) for more info or go directly to the online store (http://www.neoflix.com/store/pre55) to purchase your copy. In the immortal words of Jason Ritter, “who doesn’t want a little good dick?†

WAMG Interview: Marianna Palka and Jason Ritter

One month ago, I posted my first movie review for this website. It was for the film Good Dick, which is an extraordinary independent film that I highly recommend. I truly loved it and cannot wait to see it again. It is extremely well written, beautifully directed and the acting is top notch. Jason Ritter delivers his best performance and it put him towards the top of the list of actors I’d love to work with. I was lucky enough to attend a showing that Marianna Palka (writer, director, producer and lead actress) and Jason Ritter (lead actor and producer) were in attendance for a Q & A following the film. I was able to meet them and they happened to be two of the nicest people I have ever met working in the film industry. They agreed to an interview on the spot and we tried to set something up. After several failed attempts, I finally spoke to them last week. Our 15-minute interview turned into almost an hour long conversation about Good Dick and independent films in general. The following is the audio from the interview, almost in it’s entirety. The only stuff I removed were some technical errors and the part where we discussed a special contest. But if you check the contest page or click here, you can find out how to win the signed Good Dick poster we talked about. Enjoy!

Review: ‘Good Dick’

We All Need GOOD DICK

In a world oversaturated with formulaic $15 million dollar “independent† films, Good Dick is exactly what the doctor prescribed. Made for about $200,000, Marianna Palka’s first directorial effort is a beautiful, hilarious and fascinating look at an antisocial damsel in distress and the timid but persistent Knight who tries to rescue her. But as the stars said at the Q and A following the film, the irony is that the damsel is also the dragon.

The opening credits start as we watch our alienated heroine (Palka) make her way to Cinefile Video. After renting 3 softcore, porn titles and an awkward conversation with the video store clerk, she heads home in retreat. The clerk, played perfectly by Jason Ritter, copies down her address and drives to her home in his. He has had some troubles in the past and is now living out of his car, which becomes a base camp outside her apartment building. He eventually works his way into her home and begins disrupting her life.

This sounds like a great but possibly simple plot for a generic psychological thriller. The kind where the girl kills the stalker at the end and gets the courage to realign herself with society. Instead the film takes a completely different direction as a semi-romantic dramedy. In other hands, this film could have been a mess but, luckily for the audience, Palka proves to be a very talented writer and director, in addition to being a great actress. Jason Ritter also truly shines in his role, which could have gone either way. His character essentially stalks the lead and then lies several times to get into her apartment. However, he never seems like a creepy stalker but instead like a genuinely lonely person who wants to help someone he cares for.

You can tell Marianna Palka put her heart into this script and into the whole film in general. The overall message of changing your life, little by little, comes through clearly and fits the film perfectly. There are some very emotional scenes but she mostly keeps the tone lighthearted. There is some hilarious dialogue, especially the conversations amongst the video store clerks, but some of the funniest moments come from characters expressions and body language. In the trailer there is a short clip of Jason Ritter in an elevator after a failed conversation where he leaves his arm raised in the air. For me, it goes from a simple gesture into an invitation to “look at me, I’m an idiot.† There are many moments in the film where seemingly simple gestures like that thoroughly enhance the scene. The film also focuses on the little details; so many that it may warrant a second viewing just to catch them all. One of my favorites is that the characters use plastic baggies as mitts when placing the porn tapes into the DVD player.

In true indie fashion, the film was a labor of love for everyone involved. Everyone worked for free in locations they had or knew they could use. There were no auditions for the film. Marianna wrote most of the parts for specific actors she was friends with and found additional actors through those friends. The crew also consisted of unpaid friends who just loved the script and wanted to be a part of the film. If that doesn’t sound indie enough to you, in order to film in the video store, they had to shoot almost all the scenes at night after it closed. To top it all off, the film is being self-distributed. The decision to self distribute was made at Sundance when the filmmakers and producers saw that the market has changed with less distributors showing up and fewer purchases being made. With positive feedback and a lot of support, they felt self-distribution was the best way to get the film seen. It’s a brave move but I’m sure this film will do well, especially as word gets out. Besides, a distributor would probably try to change the title anyway.

And if you are curious about the title, you are not the only one. Soon on their official website, they will be posting a section where you can upload what the title means to you. You can make a video, write a message or send in any work of art inspired by the film’s title and what you think it means. Everyone seemed to have a different opinion, ranging from the crude to the surprising. Marianna joked that her grandmother thinks the movie is about a really good detective.

To find out more about the submission or to learn more about the film and see where it’s playing, check out  www.gooddickthefilm.com. It is unfortunately not having a wide release, but the plus side is that the filmmakers are attending many of the screenings. You can also pre-order the DVD but a date has not been announced yet. I absolutely loved this movie and I hope many of you will to. Now go out there and enjoy some Good Dick.

And as a bonus for the filmmakers†¦Good Dick Stands Tall. Feel free to use that quote in any of the marketing.

‘Good Dick’ promises to rise to great heights!

OK, here’s the “Don’t watch this if you’re under 18 bologna” … gee, I wouldn’t want anyone to hear the potty language in this trailer. That’s all there is to warrant the red band, and it’s really mild at that.

I love well-made indie dramedies and this is going to be the next big one. I am hoping I get to see this in theaters and support this level of filmmaking that we don’t see get much attention. I’m sure the powers that be will suppress as much of the publicity as they can.
