Here’s a first look at Atlas Independent’s gritty thriller THE MAN ON CARRION ROAD, directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego and starring Patrick Wilson, Ian McShane, Jim Belushi, Lynn Collins, and John Leguizamo.

Produced by Atlas’ William Green, Aaron Ginsburg, and Andy Horwitz, THE MAN ON CARRION ROAD follows a retired sheriff (McShane) and his replacement (Wilson) as they investigate a cartel deal gone wrong, while hunted by a vicious hit man (Leguizamo).

Gonzalo López-Gallego previously directed OPEN GRAVE starring Sharlto Copley and APOLLO 18.

Relativity International’s Camela Galano is handling international sales in Cannes.

Atlas Independent to Produce SANCTUARY From Director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego

Atlas Independent, the affiliate company of Charles Roven’s Atlas Entertainment, announced today that they will produce SANCTUARY, which will be directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego (APOLLO 18, OPEN GRAVE), from a script written by Ryne Douglas Pearson (KNOWING). William Green and Aaron Ginsburg will produce for Atlas Independent.

Atlas Entertainment’s Richard Suckle, Unbroken Pictures’ Bryan Bertino (THE STRANGERS) and Adrienne Biddle will executive produce. Highland Film Group (HFG) will handle worldwide sales and will introduce the film to international buyers at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

SANCTUARY follows three documentarians who travel to South America to investigate a town which mysteriously disappeared from the map. The trio are led to the ultimate enigma after a series of misfortunate occurrences: an immense concrete structure located in the middle of the missing town, with no entrances or exits.

“We intend to make a commercial horror film with one of the leading directors of the genre at the helm,” said Atlas Independent’s William Green and Aaron Ginsburg. This will be the third collaboration between Atlas Independent and Gonzalo following OPEN GRAVE and THE MAN ON CARRION ROAD, which will begin production in April.

Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego is represented by WME, Atlas Entertainment, and attorney Carlos Goodman.

First Look: APOLLO 18 Poster

The Weinstein Company has sent us this first poster for APOLLO 18. I’m intrigued by this early poster and tagline, “There’s a reason we’ve never gone back to the moon.” The sci-fi thriller about a supposed mission to the moon gone bad will be helmed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego and produced by Timur Bekmambetov. APOLLO 18 will launch into theaters on March 4, 2011.

Sci-Fi APOLLO 18 Moves Forward With New Director At The Controls

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER is reporting that APOLLO 18 has a new director.

Spanish-language director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego has stepped in to replace Trevor Cawood as the helmer of the Weinstein Co.’s sci-fi “found footage” project Apollo 18.

Cawood is the latest victim swept up in the space race to launch Apollo 18, which since its announcement at the American Film Market, has caused tremors in the burgeoning genre of “found footage” movies. It first caused Roland Emmerich to scrap his ultra-low budget sci-fi project The Zone, and then days later Warner Bros. dropped Dark Moon, a spec it bought concerning the Apollo moon missions to be directed in the found footage format by Olantunde Osunsanmi. Dark Castle then swept in to save it.

 

Apollo 18 is being produced by Timur Bekmambetov and was written by Brian Miller, a winner of a screenplay contest founded by the Wanted filmmaker. TWC picked up the project Nov. 7 with an ambitious plan: to shoot the project immediately, run it through post faster than a rocket traveling through a wormhole, and release it in early March in the hopes of beating Paramount sci-fi found footage movie Area 51, directed by Oren Peli of Paranormal Activity fame. That’s basically making a movie from casting the leads to delivering it to theaters in around three months.

That schedule may have proved too tight for Cawood, a visual effects guru who worked on the Matrix movies and would have been making his feature directorial debut. The pressure is now on Lopez-Gallego, the award-winning filmmaker who is best known for directing El rey de la montana (King of the Hill). The director, repped by ICM and Principato/Young Management, will be making his English-language debut with Apollo 18.

Apollo 18 is purported to be footage from a secret and covert mission to the moon which ends up in revealing evidence of new lifeforms. According to sources, the majority of the story takes place in the rocket in between the Earth and the Moon.
