Review: ‘The Ugly Truth’

He Said:

So, when Jennifer said “I want to see that,” I looked up from my laptop and asked “see what?” She quickly backed up the Tivo and showed me a commercial for ‘The Ugly Truth’. All I remember thinking was… oh no, not again.

Fast forward and we’re at the premier and sitting in our seats eagerly awaiting the raging suck fest that most romantic comedies are. I said most. Not all. There are, in fact, a number of fantastic romantic comedies out there. Though, most of the ones I can think of involve Meg Ryan. Weird. So anyway, the movie begins and follows the path of Abby, a TV producer and neurotic control freak who is surprisingly well versed in handling her crew and talent. Knowing just what to say to keep them happily in line. She also shows off her ability to think on the fly when the guest chef on her show causes a small uprising with the dish he makes.

So, enter the struggle as poor Abby, played by Katherine Heigel (Knocked Up, 27 Dresses), is trying to save her failing show and find the ideal mate at the same time. When by chance, her cat changes the channel on the TV to ‘The Ugly Truth’, a show on public access TV hosted by Mike, played by Gerard Butler (300, RocknRolla).

Mike’s show is all about exposing the little fantasies we all have about dating and love. All the while making fun of the masks and slight of hand we use in our pursuit of romantic relationships. It was kind of refreshing to hear a man talk about being a man. Talking about what our real motivations are and how they relate to male and female interactions. If there is not a show like this one on the air now, there really should be.

After a very embarrassing moment as a caller on Mike’s cable access show, Abby finds herself in the unfortunate position of being Mike’s producer after he is brought onto Abby’s show as a weekly guest. The powers that be think that Mike is just the sort of audacious flare that the dieing show needs.

This is a fantastic movie. Heigle and Butler have a strong on-screen chemistry. Their fight scenes have sexually charged energy that makes them engaging to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed the film. It occurred to me as we sat watching the credits and waiting for the theater to clear out that this is a guy movie disguised as a chick flick. Take that Coyote Ugly!

She Said:

The truth about romantic comedies is that they all follow a pattern. An established set of rules that you can check off as you work your way through the movie. ‘The Ugly Truth’ starring Katherine Heigel and Gerard Butler hits all of the required notes and unfolds exactly as you might expect. What I did not expect was the raunchy humor, explicit language and profanity. And yet, somehow they made it all work.

Tightly wound morning show producer Abby runs a tight ship at her Sacramento television studio (look for Cheryl Hines and John Michael Higgins as a hilarious husband/wife anchor team). Ratings are down, so her manager decides to liven things up by bringing in the host of a local cable access show known for sparking controversy about the truth about the sexes. Mike (Gerard Butler) is everything that Abby is not. She is determined to get him off of her show by any means necessary.

Opportunity presents itself on two fronts when Abby meets handsome Dr. Andrews (Eric Winter is the perfect Ken to Heigel’s Barbie). To help her land the man of her dreams, Mike offers to coach her on the ways of seduction and lust. If he is right, she gets Dr. Andrews. If his plan does not work, Mike will leave the show.

While I am sure we all know how the film ends I will not give away the ending. I will however warn the faint of heart that the blue screened ending scene is in jarring contrast to the rest of the beautifully shot film. I actually think that the special effects in ‘Plan 9 From Outer Space’ may have been better.

‘The Ugly Truth’ opens in theaters Friday July 24, 2009 and is rated ‘R’.

UPDATE – New Motion Poster for Neveldine/Taylor Movie…Something With ‘Game’ in the Title

gamer-poster

At this point, I’m game (har har) for any movie starring Gerard Butler, the only man I wouldn’t mind seeing step into Russell’s shoes as Snake Plissken.   I’m also pretty much game (okay, that’s the last one) for anything done by Neveldine/Taylor, the directing duo behind ‘Crank’ (friggin’ excellent) and ‘Crank: High Voltage’ (good, but not so much).

Their latest, ‘Gamer,’ has been in the can since before they began working on ‘Crank: High Voltage.’Â   It looks like it is finally getting released, as we brought you the trailer last month (it’s since been pulled for copyright issues), and, today, we got the poster for you.

It was initally called ‘Game,’ then ‘Citizen Game,’ now it looks like it’s just being called ‘Gamer.’   Whatever you call it, that trailer was pretty damned impressive.   Wish you could see it.   That poster above isn’t anything to write home about, but it’s not horrible.   It kind of has the same design ideas behind a dozen different horror/sci-fi movie posters, but it works perfectly for this movie.

You can check out the motion poster right here.   Just run your mouse over the poster to see Gerard Butler’s face break away to reveal the gamer underneath:

Very cool.

‘Gamer’ comes out on September 4th.

‘Game’ Italian Trailer Now Online

game

Okay, so the big trailer news today is that ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ finally broke out into the public.   How many tweets do I need to see about how great and amazing that film looks?   Well, another trailer came out today that, personally, I’m more stoked for than what Spike Jonze has up his sleeve.

‘Game’ is the newest film from (Mark) Neveldine & (Brian) Taylor, the guys behind ‘Crank’ and ‘Crank: High Voltage’.   That’s right, guys.   This duo has two kickass movies coming out this year.

Here is the official synopsis:

Set in the near-future, mind-control technology has taken society by storm and a multiplayer on-line game called “Slayers” allows humans control other humans in mass-scale. Simon controls Kable (Gerard Butler) the on-line champion of the game, and with his every move tracked by millions, his ultimate challenge becomes regaining his identity and independence by defeating the game’s mastermind (Michael C. Hall) through launching an attack on the system that has imprisoned him.

Here is the trailer.   It is in Italian, but, fear not, there’s not much dialogue.   Just a bunch of stuff blowing up real good:

There is so much to be excited for about this movie.   Neveldine/Taylor make great action.   Butler is a badass.   I’m sure Hall will make an exceptional villain.   Can’t wait.

‘Game’ comes out on September 4th.

Trailer for ‘Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter’

watchmentalesoftheblackfreighter

So, being SUPER excited about the ‘Watchmen’ movie, while (shamefully) having never read the graphic novel, I know not the story behind this animated companion piece to Zack Snyder’s much-anticipated adaptation. However, ‘Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter’ looks pretty awesome in the trailer and even better after reading this Official Synopsis:

They’re in the book. And on this disc. From the director of Watchmen and 300 come two tales from the celebrated graphic novel that do not appear in the extraordinary Watchmen Theatrical Feature. Tales of the Black Freighter (featuring the voice of 300s Gerard Butler) brings to strikingly animated life the novels richly layered story-within-a-story, a daring pirate saga whose turbulent events may mirror those in the Watchmen’s world. Stars from the Watchmen movie team in the amazing live-action/CGI Under the Hood, based on Nite Owls powerful first-hand account of how the hooded adventurers came into existence. Two fan-essential stories. One place to watch the excitement. Watching the Watchmen begins here. — [source: FilmSchoolRejects.com]

Viola Davis Joins ‘Law Abiding Citizen’

Recent Oscar nominee, Viola Davis, has signed on for the psychological thriller ‘Law Abiding Citizen’. Â  She will star alongside Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. Â  The film is being directed by F. Gary Gray.

The story focuses on a man (Butler) who, 10 years after his wife and daughter are brutally murdered, returns to exact justice from the assistant district attorney (Foxx) who prosecuted the case against their killers. Â  Sounds a bit like the forgotten classic ‘Seven Hours to Judgment’ starring Beau Bridges.

The announcement of Davis joining the cast was made by  Overture Films’ CEO Chris McGurk and COO Danny Rosett along with Mark Gill and Neil Sacker of The Film Department.

“What a fantastic cast,” said McGurk. “We are thrilled to partner with The Film Department on such an intriguing project and hope this is just the beginning of a long and successful relationship.”

The film also stars Bruce McGill, Leslie Bibb, Colm Meaney, and Regina Hall.

‘Law Abiding Citizen’ started shooting January 21st in Philadelphia and is set for a release sometime in 2010.

Aniston and Butler are teaming up

Well who  thought a comedy could be made off the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith and especially with actors Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston. However that is not what Andy Tennant, director of Hitch, is thinking as he is directing an Untitled script off of  Sarah Thorp. The untitled film centers on a bounty hunter (Butler) hired to retrieve his ex-wife (Aniston), who has skipped bail. Production is hoping to get started on May for this project but for right now you can see both of these stars on the big screen in He’s Just Not That In To You, Aniston, and The Ugly Truth, Butler.

Review: ‘RockNRolla’

Scott:

I got a chance to see an advanced screening of Guy Ritchie’s brand new gangster flick ‘RockNRolla’ and damn am I impressed. Now, before we start let me tell you that unless you are a fan of his previous work, especially ‘Snatch’, then you probably wont like this one either.

‘RockNRolla’ follows several different story-lines as every Guy Richie movie does, and there isnt much in the way of new story telling, but as always its done with a lot of style.

The story follows the story of One, Two played by Gerard Butler and his gang called “The Wild Bunch”. When they get screwed over on a real estate deal, they owe the wrong people a couple million dollars and set out to get the money, while still coming out ahead. Guy Richie continues his trend of awesome gangster names with the likes of One Two, Mumbles, and Handsome Bob.

One of the things I was the most surprised at, was the performance given by Toby Kebbell (pictured above) as the Johnny Quid/The RockNRolla. I haven’t seen anything else of his, but he really gave himself to the role and it comes through in the movie. He had some smaller roles in movies like ‘Alexander’, ‘Match Point’, and ‘Wilderness’, but I honestly cant picture him in any of them. Keep your eye out for this kid..

I dont want to completely ruin it by giving away all the secrets, but this movie is definitely worth hitting up, after you see ‘Zack and Miri’ of course.

Overall: 4 Stars

Zac:

Guy Ritchie’s return to form in RocknRolla is a crazy, fun, and always cool look at crime in London, and while it might seem like re-tread territory to some, it is so damn entertaining that one should ask, why should we care?

To begin to explain this convoluted and twisting plot from the get go would be a bit of a pain, and Archie (Mark Strong) does a good job of keeping you in the loop as he narrates everyone’s comings and goings, but I will try my best to sum up here.   Lenny (Tom Wilkinson) is a big wig crime boss in England that makes his money in property and twisting his connections into his favor.   So when One Two (Gerard Butler) and Mumbles (Idris Elba) come to him with a lucrative property proposition, he gets in their way of a loan, and gets them to owe him money as well; all while he turns on the fast track to acquiring the property himself.

To help fund this property, Lenny turns to Uri (Karel Roden) a Russian entrepreneur who is trying to get in on the property boom of London like many other “immigrants” are, and Lenny offers his contacts and connections at the cost of 7 million Euros.   Uri eagerly agrees and offers his lucky painting as a sign of gratitude to Lenny and assures him that his (Uri) accountant (Thandie Newton) will be able to produce the money in little to no time.   Well as you can imagine, things don’t go necessarily to plan and things become quite intertwined and a whole mess of trouble for everyone brews before the end.

Guy Ritchie’s plots tend to get a bit silly and out of control at times, but this one doesn’t really get to twisted you just get nailed with a lot of information for the first few minutes.   From there on out it surprises and keeps you guessing, while slowly ramping up the insanity and entertainment along the way.   The film also oozes style and is possibly Ritchie’s best looking film to date.   The humor in the film is also fantastic with a great payoff to a relationship between One Two and another member of The Wild Bunch, Archie’s fantastic running gag around slapping, and the amazing chase scene at the end of the second act that like those involved, never really quit.   Ritchie throws all this humor and style mixed in with some quality actors and he again has a rousing sucess.

There is no true star to this film as everyone gets about equal time, but there is top notch work from everyone involved though.   Gerard Butler is hilarious as One Two, from the smug criminal attitude, the physical humor involved, and the great work he does with Tom Hardy, he deserves accolades all around.

Tom Wilkinson chews up the scenery around him as the angry old school crime boss that slowly feels like his grip on his turf is fading.   Mark Strong continues to stand out from the pack as Archie and provides laughs and is a badass from scene to scene; and between this and Body of Lies he is shaping up to be a major player in Hollywood, hopefully.   Toby Kebbell nails the crazy junky rocknrolla that the film is named after, and after his work here and in Control, I can’t wait for more of him.   Jeremy Piven and Chris Bridges have small parts in the picture and make the most of the screen time they had, even though they are around merely as plot device more than anything.   Thandie Newton is conniving and great at just sitting back and letting things play out while she shines with her work against Karel Roden as the two size each other up every time they are on screen together.   I can’t write home enough about this cast and am leaving plenty of great work without mention, but there is nary a falter here and one can’t possibly be disappointed.

In the end, RocknRolla is not only a return to form for Ritchie, but he has made his best picture yet possibly.   Repeat viewings will test its longevity, but I don’t think any of his films were as enjoyable the first time around.   A tad less dark then previous entries, but just a twisted and funny, RocknRolla proves Ritchie is still a filmmaker worth checking out and this gives me even higher hopes for a potentially awesome Sherlock Holmes movie in the not to distant future.
