MR. MALCOLM’S LIST – Review

(L to R) Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù stars as “Mr. Malcolm” and Freida Pinto stars as “Selina Dalton” in director Emma Holly Jones’ MR. MALCOLM’S LIST, a Bleecker Street release. Credit : Ross Ferguson / Bleecker Street

The streaming hit “Bridgerton” has opened a new style of period romance, a fantasy historical romance in which bits of anachronism are plainly on view and color-blind casting enlivens interest. In that show, tales of romance feature essentially-modern people, dressed in the colorful costumes of Jane Austen’s time, pursuing love under the rules of that time period – well, some of the rules. MR. MALCOLM’S LIST is a Regency romance following “Bridgerton’s” lead with the color-blind casting but without the anachronisms, for a romantic romp with an attractive cast in a story that blends elements of Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” and “Emma.”

Director Emma Holly Jones makes her feature film debut with MR. MALCOLM’S LIST, adapting Suzanne Allain’s novel and with a script written by the author. The film provides plenty of snappy dialog and intriguing situations, all set in beautiful locations, with those lovely costumes and period furnishings. For fans of period romances, MR. MALCOLM’S LIST delivers solid entertainment, although not always in the ways anticipated and with a bit more humor than might be expected.

Zawe Ashton stars as Julia Thistlewaite, a wealthy and pretty young woman who has a high opinion of herself but is less charming and well-informed as she thinks she is. Julia had set her sights on the season’s most eligible bachelor, the rich but aloof Mr. Jeremy Malcolm (Ṣọpe Dìrísu), but after briefly capturing his attention, she is dropped. Stung by the snub, and particularly a publicly-circulating cartoon satirizing it, she is particularly outraged when she learns, through her cousin, Lord Cassidy (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), that Mr. Malcolm has a secret list of requirements for a potential wife, and she failed to make the grade. Julia determines to get revenge, and calls on an old school friend, Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto), a country girl and the daughter of a vicar, to help her. Julia’s plan is to remake her friend into the perfect match for Mr. Malcolm’s list but after he falls for her, have her then spurn him for not meeting the requirements of her own list. Sweet, innocent Selina initially balks at this scheme but is persuaded when Julia appeals for her help based on their long friendship.

After outfitting the less-affluent Selina with fashionable new clothes, coaching her in dancing, and a little brush-up on current political issues like the corn laws, Julia arranges a meeting with Mr Malcolm at a ball. It all goes better than hoped. When handsome Captain Henry Ossory (Theo James) turns up shortly afterwards, with his own plans to court Selina, things look even better in Julia’s eyes. What she fails to note that Selina and Mr. Malcolm really are attracted to each other.

Of course, where this goes is no surprise but the fun in this kind of tale is in the characters themselves. But the thing is that in this Austen-esque drama, it is the supporting characters who are much more interesting than the couple supposedly at the center of the plot.

Zawe Ashton’s Julia is positioned to be the villain but Ashton is so funny and so human in her failings that we easily fall for her flawed character. Likewise, Oliver Jackson-Cohen’s charmingly lazy Lord Cassidy, as his cousin’s reluctant partner in this plot, amuses and entertains us with his quirkiness. Theo James as the handsome captain becomes more of presence, charming us with his insights and steady nature as he slowly shifting his attentions towards the plotting Julia. On the other hand, Freida Pinto’s Selina is just too pure and sweet to have much depth, and Sope Dirisu’s Jeremy Malcolm remains so reserved that it is hard to connect with him. Unlike Austen’s Mr. Darcy, he never opens up much and the character does not win us over in the same way.

The re-direction of our interests to supporting characters may have been the director’s plan all along, but a little more depth for the purported main characters would have made this period romance a bit more fun.

Certainly, the actors have the chops to do that (if unfamiliar with Sope Dirisu, check out the amount of magic he generates in his very small role in another costume drama, MOTHERING SUNDAY). But the delightful Zawe Ashton more than makes up for those thinner characters, turning her clueless, selfish Julia from a source of humor into someone we care about and cheer as she evolves.

There are other entertaining supporting characters to add to the entertainment, a footman and a maid, Selina’s embarrassingly outre’ widowed cousin Mrs. Covington (Ashley Park), Julia’s exasperated mother Mrs. Thistlewaite (Naoko Mori) and, particularly delightful in a smaller role, Dona Croll as Jeremy Malcolm’s regal mother Lady Kilbourne. The film, shot on location in Ireland, looks gorgeous, packed with beautiful scenery, lush interiors and lovely colorful costumes.

It’s not Jane Austen but MR MALCOLM’S LIST has enough fun to keep “Bridgerton” and other period romance fans happy.

MR MALCOLM’S LIST opens in theaters on Friday, July 1.

From the creator of Gollum (LOTR series) and Caesar (PLANET OF THE PAES) comes a new telling of the story of MOWGLI. See Andy Serkis and an incredible cast bring the jungle to new life October 19, 2018 in theaters.

Motion capture and live action are blended for MOWGLI, a new, big screen, 3D adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Book.

Walt Disney Studios released the animated musical classic in 1967 and a retelling of it with a live version in 2016.

This version follows the upbringing of the human child Mowgli, raised by a wolf pack in the jungles of India. As he learns the often harsh rules of the jungle, under the tutelage of a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera, Mowgli becomes accepted by the animals of the jungle as one of their own. All but one: the fearsome tiger Shere Khan. But there may be greater dangers lurking in the jungle, as Mowgli comes face to face with his human origins.

The actors performing the roles of the story’s central animal characters are: Oscar winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter,” the “Dark Knight” Trilogy) as the cunning panther, Bagheera; Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine,” “The Aviator”) as the sinister snake, Kaa; Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game,” “Avengers: Infinity War”) as the fearsome tiger, Shere Khan; Oscar nominee Naomie Harris (“Moonlight,” “Skyfall”) as Nisha, the female wolf, who adopts the baby Mowgli as one of her cubs; and Andy Serkis (the “Planet of the Apes” trilogy, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) as the wise bear, Baloo. On the human side, Matthew Rhys (“The Post”) is Lockwood; Freida Pinto (“Knight of Cups”) is Messua; and young actor Rohan Chand (“The Hundred-Foot Journey,” “Bad Words”) will play Mowgli, the boy raised by wolves.

Rounding out the cast are Peter Mullan (“Tommy’s Honour”), as the leader of the wolf pack, Akela; Jack Reynor (“Transformers: Age of Extinction”), as Mowgli’s brother Wolf; Eddie Marsan (TV’s “Ray Donovan”), as Nisha’s mate, Vihaan; and Tom Hollander (“Breathe”) as the scavenging hyena, Tabaqui.

“Mowgli” is produced by Steve Kloves (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”), Jonathan Cavendish (“Breathe,” performance capture producer on “Godzilla”), and David Barron (the “Harry Potter” films), with Nikki Penny serving as executive producer. The screenplay is by Kloves’ daughter, Callie Kloves.

Serkis’s creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Michael Seresin (“War for the Planet of the Apes”), production designer Gary Freeman (“Tomb Raider”) and editors Mark Sanger (Oscar winner, “Gravity”), Alex Marquez (“Snowden”) and Jeremiah O’Driscoll (“Flight”). The music is composed by Nitin Sawhney (“Breathe”).

Watch Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett And Natalie Portman In KNIGHT OF CUPS Trailer

knight of cups_1

From Broad Green Pictures, watch the brand new trailer for KNIGHT OF CUPS .

The cast includes Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Armin Mueller-Stahl and the voice of Ben Kingsley.

Earlier this year, KNIGHT OF CUPS had its World Premiere in the Competition Programme at the 65th Berlin Film Festival. Watch the press conference here.

Synopsis:

Rick is a slave to the Hollywood system. He is addicted to success but simultaneously despairs at the emptiness of his life. He is at home in a world of illusions but seeks real life. Like the tarot card of the title, Rick is easily bored and needs outside stimulation. But the Knight of Cups is also an artist, a romantic and an adventurer.

In Terrence Malick’s seventh film a gliding camera once again accompanies a tormented hero on his search for meaning. Once again a voiceover is laid over images which also seek their own authenticity. And once again Malick seems to put the world out of joint. His symphonic flow of images contrasts cold, functional architecture with the ageless beauty of nature. Rick’s internal monologue coalesces with the voices of the women who cross his path, women who represent different principles in life: while one lives in the real world, the other embodies beauty and sensuality. Which path will Rick choose? In the city of angels and the desert that surrounds it, will he find his own way?

New “Making Of” Featurette Debuts For DESERT DANCER; Benjamin Wallfisch’s Soundtrack Available April 7

COPYRIGHT DESERT DANCER PRODUCTIONS LTD 2014
COPYRIGHT DESERT DANCER PRODUCTIONS LTD 2014

Relativity Studios has released a new, behind-the-scenes featurette for their upcoming film DESERT DANCER. The movie stars Freida Pinto, Reece Ritchie, Tom Cullen, Nazanin Boniadi and Makram J. Khoury.

Check out the featurette now for an inside look at the cast’s dance rehearsals with acclaimed choreographer Akram Khan.

The video features Benjamin Wallfisch’s original score throughout.

Set in Iran, this powerful and unbelievable true story follows the brave ambition of Afshin Ghaffarian. During the volatile climate of the 2009 presidential election, where many cultural freedoms were threatened, Afshin and some friends (including Elaheh played by Freida Pinto) risk their lives and form an underground dance company.

Through banned online videos, they learn from timeless legends who cross all cultural divides, such as Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev. Afshin and Elaheh also learn much from each other, most importantly how to embrace their passion for dance and for one another.

Directed by Richard Raymond, the film will feature an original score by Emmy and Ivor Novello-nominated composer, Benjamin Wallfisch. Varèse Sarabande has announced the release of the DESERT DANCER – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, available on CD and digitally on April 7, 2015. The original score includes the music for three extended dance sequences featured in the film, especially created for the movie as a collaboration between Wallfisch and award winning choreographer Akram Khan, whose credits include the choreography for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

“My collaboration with Benjamin Wallfisch started years before I began shooting Desert Dancer,” emphasizes director Richard Raymond. “Long passionate discussions with Ben – and his responses to those discussions – were the very first building blocks in the creation of this project. For me, Ben’s music was a fundamental part of the creative process. He has managed to convey the tragedy that is an entire generation of youth unable to express themselves artistically in a free society, but also their nobility and their perseverance for artistic truth. The youth of Iran are the heroes of this story and this score is a tribute to them. Both Ben and I have a love of cinema, powerful images and emotive music. It’s been a delight to create something born of that love with such an accomplished composer.”

“I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Richard, Akram and the entire creative team on this beautiful movie. Richard managed to turn a powerful and important story about the state of freedom of expression in Iran into an inspirational statement of the power of art to give people a sense of freedom, no matter what their circumstance. Afshin Ghaffarian remains one of the most inspirational individuals I’ve met and it was an honor to have been invited to help tell his story through music,” said Benjamin Wallfisch.

Freida Pinto and Reece Ritchie1.JPG

“Ben captured the essence of the film’s tone with the themes for the characters, and most of all, the desert dance. Ben’s score is rich and emotional, and was the fundamental guiding force for myself and the choreographer towards creating the dance sequences,” explained Raymond. “For Elaheh, I fell in love with the way that Ben utilized a counting pluck to initiate her theme, a complex, guarded character whose dance, addiction, and family tragedy are all inextricably linked. For the desert dance, Ben insisted we needed a score to match the vastness of the desert, yet the intimacy of the experience. He embraced silence and stillness where required and juxtaposed that against loud, earthquake-inducing drums.”

Wallfisch is an Emmy and Ivor Novello nominated composer and has worked on 42 movies to date. He made his scoring debut at the age of 24, composing the music for Thomas Vinterberg’s DEAR WENDY (World Soundtrack Awards ‘Discovery of the Year’ nominee & Danish Film Academy Awards nominee for ‘Best Original Score’).

He composed, orchestrated and conducted the suspense thriller THE ESCAPIST (Ivor Novello Awards nominee & World Soundtrack Awards ‘Discovery of the Year’ nominee). Recent scoring projects include HOURS, SUMMER IN FEBRUARY, HAMMER OF THE GODS, THE THIRTEENTH TALE and BHOPAL: A PRAYER FOR RAIN. He is currently scoring WITHIN for New Line Cinema.

He recently co-arranged and orchestrated the 2015 Grammy performance of ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams and composed the Steven Spielberg produced short film AUSCHWITZ, which premiered at the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz commemoration.

Relativity Studios is releasing DESERT DANCER in limited release on April 10; wide on April 17th. DESERT DANCER Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is available April 7, 2015.

TRISHNA – The Review

Review by Dane Marti

Starring the spellbinding Indian actress, Freida Pinto, the film, TRISHNA  impressively examines a modern relationship in all its complex angles – by turns, the story is tragic, realistic, subtle and entertaining: Nothing in this film seems plastic or contrived.

Neither as hyperkinetic as SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE or as Hollywood-infused as RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (two of Pinto’s earlier hit movies), this evocative film is a treat in more ways than one:

Trishna lives with her family in a rather poor village in an Indian state known as Rajasthan. She’s the oldest daughter and definitely the prettiest, although the entire world doesn’t stop and stare hungrily as she walks the countryside. The role could easily have been played by an average looking person and still worked as well. The reason why this actress was chosen for the role is that she is talented, a “name” and – well, she makes the viewer want to take the films journey with her!

In contrast to her humble world, Jay is a much more ‘westernized’ young man. Played with understated honesty by Riz Ahmed, Jay is both wealthy and hip. His father is a blind and powerful property owner who dotes on budgies in his spare time. Jay’s family compound is very spectacular. Hell, I’d definitely live there.

The attractive couple meet at a dance; their attraction happens slowly, yet seems much more sincere than a plethora of stilted, cinematic love stories continually being cranked-out by tinsel town like obese sausages.

Still, as cute as the young couple seems to be, there are also unpleasant problems lurking in their future: it’s akin to an influenza which infects a society and cannot be brushed aside due to the dictates of sweet, effervescent love: Basically, they are from drastically different levels of society! Meanwhile, the world keeps shifting.

Although beautiful, the actress is able to play a character who isn’t simply glamorous and gleaming, but uncertain and cautious about her place in modern India. Dedicated to her poor family, Trishna is definitely lovely on the inside as well as on the exterior! Pinto cleverly conveys her character’s uncertain feelings about Jay’s glitzy, larger existence: Mumbai.

At the start of the film, Trishna is shy and immersed in her tightly knit family, but a viewer can tell that she wants to be released and experience new things; On the other hand, his “world” fills her with wonder, along with more than a little uncertainty. These feelings and thoughts are exacerbated as the film moves steadily toward its climax.

Thankfully, this basic premise does not become the obligatory Romeo and Juliet-type love story, but a vivid and solemn investigation of a bond in modern India. Not everything is picture-postcard perfect. Painful, provocative truths come to head as the film moves forward.

Director Michael Winterbottom has shown himself to be skilled in diverse and different cinematic worlds: whether it is a film dealing with club music, or violent, savage Noir (The Killer Inside Me), Winterbottom is an underrated filmmaker, a masterful director that never veers too far into either the traditional “genre” landscape or the artistic, ambiguous environment of certain independent or foreign films. Normally dealing with a medium-sized budget, he is a skilled, impressive movie director.

Based on Thomas Hardy’s famous novel Tess of the D’Ubervilles, the film compassionately demonstrates what happens when love and culture collide! Industrialization, modernization and education all play a vital part in distorting the film’s lovers, just as these same elements in society have mutated the actual people who live in the country. Of course, this isn’t extraordinary to India alone, but happens in all cultures, climates and countries. It’s just that it seems highlighted within India and that helps the movie’s narrative breed and fester.

Education has enlightened Trishna as a person. However, although she has dreams and ambition, she finds it hard to reconcile these thoughts and desires with the significant love and bond she shares with her rural family. The performance by the actress is first-rate at conveying this. Pinto continues to shine as an actress. Pinto astounds the viewer. Her performance is a revelation.

The cinematography is realistic; sometimes movie viewers have to remind themselves that they aren’t watching a documentary. The local color, architecture and people are on realistic and compassionate display. Even with this attention to cultural detail, the narrative never gets bogged down: The story keeps clapping along, even as we see a unique, living landscape.

By turns sweet and compassionate, the movie is a treat. Anyone who enjoys thoughtful, intelligent stories set in cultures unlike the typical cinematic blockbuster will find this movie to be a welcome respite.

TRISHNA opens in St. Louis today at Landmark’s Plaza Frontenac Theater
