For aspiring comedian Donna Stern, everyday life as a female twenty-something provides ample material for her incredibly relatable brand of humor. On stage, Donna is unapologetically herself, joking about topics as intimate as her sex life and as crude as her day-old underwear. But when Donna gets dumped, loses her job, and finds herself pregnant just in time for Valentine’s Day, she has to navigate the murky waters of independent adulthood for the first time. As she grapples with an uncertain financial future, an unwanted pregnancy, and a surprising new suitor, Donna begins to discover that the most terrifying thing about adulthood isn’t facing it all on her own.

It’s allowing herself to accept the support and love of others. And be truly vulnerable. Never failing to find the comedy and humanity in each awkward situation she encounters, Donna finds out along the way what it means to be as brave in life as she is on stage.

Anchored by a breakout performance from Jenny Slate, OBVIOUS CHILD is a winning discovery, packed tight with raw, energetic comedy and moments of poignant human honesty. Writer/Director Gillian Robespierre handles the topic of Donna’s unwanted pregnancy with a refreshing matter-of-factness rarely seen onscreen. And with Donna, Slate and Robespierre have crafted a character for the ages – a female audiences will recognize, cheer for, and love.

The film also features Jake Lacy, Gaby Hoffmann, David Cross, Gabe Liedman & Richard Kind.

This film has been rated R for language and sexual content.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS : CHIPWRECKED – The Review

Ah, what Hollywood will do in the pursuit of family movie box office bucks. The studio executives love pre-sold properties, so for the past several years the rights to the Saturday morning superstars of yesteryear have been scooped up to attract not only the small set, but their parents who have nostalgic memories of wolfing down their sugar-blasted cereals in front of the old, glowing cathode tube babysitter. For most of these trips down memory lane, the classic characters are rendered in CGI alongside live actors, perhaps to set these new efforts apart from their limited cell animation roots. This may have begun with CASPER, who frolicked with Christina Ricci and Bill Paxton, and continued with SCOOBY DOO ( and a CGI Great Dane ), YOGI BEAR, this past Summer’s smash THE SMURFS, and now the third of the movie series, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS : CHIPWRECKED. While they might be best remembered by most adults as TV stars, the Chipmunks were created for novelty records ( now that’s really going back ). After several audio experiments, music producer/ songwriter Ross Bagdasarian ( movie trivia : he’s the lonely piano player living across from Jimmy Stewart in REAR WINDOW ) created the trio for the recording ” The Chipmunk Song” AKA ” Christmas Don’t Be Late “. Not only did Bagdasarian provide the voices of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, but he become the character David Seville, the human manager / father figure to the child-like rodents. This prompted several more best-selling record albums and eventually a CBS prime time animated series ( produced by Format Films ), ” The Alvin Show “. A few more albums followed until they drifted into pop culture limbo after the death of Bagdasarian in 1972. In the early eighties son Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. revived the group with new versions of pop tunes and returned them to Saturday mornings on NBC with a new series in 1983 ( this time produced by Ruby-Spears and later DIC ). The trio invaded home video with a series of original animated films and jumped to cinemas in 2007 with the live action/ CGI hybrid ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS. A follow-up in 2009, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS : THE SQUEAKQUEL introduced moviegoers to the trio’s female counterparts : Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor. Both flicks were box office bonanzas, so here’s the film that hopes to pull off the old franchise hat trick.

Well. what did they come up with for this new movie adventure? Let’s send ’em on vacation! On a high seas cruise to be exact. Dave Seville ( Jason Lee ) takes the chipmunks and chipettes on a nautical excursion before they perform on the International Music Awards show. This will be a perfect opportunity for ole’ Dave to sooth his jangled nerves. But with that hellion Alvin leading the group there’s little chance of any relaxation for Mr. S! Dave soon earns the ire of the ship’s captain and the intrusive ship mascot who turns out to be the villain from the previous films, Ian ( David Cross ) former music producer now reduced to wearing a cumbersome pelican costume. An incident with a kite sends the ‘munks flying off the boat. Dave and Ian grab a paraglider, but soon are adrift at sea. The six castaways land on an island that turns out not to be deserted. There’s a loopy delivery woman named Zoe ( Jenny Slate ) who helps them. The island provides more than just survival challenges for the title trio. The more immature Theodore is still traumatized by a monster flick he watched in their cabin on the ship. A spider bite turns the usually timid Simon into a reckless, French-accented daredevil who makes Jeanette swoon. And the usually irresponsible Alvin must take charge as a looming volcano threatens to erupt. Will they be re-united with Dave ( and Ian ) and return to civilization in time for the big award show. And what’s the secret behind the waterfall?

These little critters may just have overstayed their time at the multiplex with this uninspired ( well, with a bit of inspiration from CASTAWAY and TV’s ” Survivor “, ” Lost “, and ” Gilligan’s Island ” ) romp. The chipmunks are just not complex enough to warrant a third film. Theo’s the pudgy baby, Simon’s the timid brainiac, and Alvin’s the wild card. Their main gimmick ( squeaky, sped-up voices ) grows tiresome quickly. I could only understand have of the vocals on their takes on pop tunes ( luckily there’s only one ” chip-rap ” number ). Some name actors supply the voices, but sound nearly alike ( I can’t tell you which chipette is Christina Applegate, Anna Faris, or Amy Poehler ). The CGI animation of them is serviceable, but in most of the action scenes they bounce around like little furry rubber balls ( I’m so glad we were spared 3D on this one ). Their live human co-stars don’t fare much better. Lee and Cross have shown their impressive comedy skills on TV ( in ” My Name is Earl ” and ” Arrested Development ” ), but here the must struggle through some poorly scripted bits of clumsy slapstick. It was a surprise seeing the gifted SNL vet Slate involved, but she can’t turn this into comic gold. Even the biggest baby boomer and Gen X fans ( now parents ) will be checking their time pieces as this film plods along. With much superior family films still in theatres ( THE MUPPETS, ARTHUR CHRISTMAS, and the magical HUGO ), there’s no need to board this sinking ship. The old ” it’s just a kids’ movie” excuse should not give a free pass to mediocre movies.

KUNG FU PANDA 2 – The Review

More heart, deeper storyline, and more action is what this sequel brings to the screen. Reuniting the writing talents of Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, that penned the first installment of this soon to be trilogy, was a magnificent choice for the film. The characters have more depth, connection, heart-warming moments, and of course more fight choreography. Directed by Jennifer Yuh, known for SPAWN – THE TV SERIES and writing collaborator on other animated projects such as SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS and THE REAL ADVENTURES OF JOHNNY QUEST – THE TV SERIES, knows animation well and it shows by her distinct perception of the fight sequences and overall look of the film. She is not afraid to use different camera angles and close-ups to instant sky shots. This kept a very good pace while watching the film while also giving the audience a better look at the town and outlying areas. And, by the way, kudos need to be given to the perpetually overlooked fight choreographer of the animated film. They were unique in several elements and gave Yuh more to work with. Weapons, items in the path, and their own talents were interwoven in the fight scenes, which there are many-as to be expected in a film about Kung Fu.

In Dreamworks latest animated feature, we find the characters from the original, Po (Jack Black), Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Crane (David Cross), and Viper (Lucy Liu) using their ever developing Kung Fu skills to fight against a new enemy…the evil Lord Shen (Gary Oldman). There is a huge back story that is better revealed when you see it at the theater so you can be genuinely surprised. But, it is foreseen by the soothsayer that Lord Shen and Po’s pasts are linked mysteriously. This fact is shrouded in flashbacks and interjected back story throughout the film. Po’s mind opening up to the past makes his concentration of the future more difficult than usual, and he is also on another quest in this film-to find inner peace. A necessary step in the development of Kung Fu, so says Master Shifu. There are many journeys throughout the movie that all intertwine in an interesting solution that sets up for the third film. We do meet some new characters along the expedition that enhance the story and will most likely be part of the next installment. Some of them are significant names in the martial arts world, such as John-Claude Van Damme and Michelle Yeoh.

All in all, it was very entertaining with the fight scenes, but the new story line truly gave an otherwise predictable sequel a twist or two and kept you engaged. Po’s antics as a clutz that ends up falling on the right villain kept families engaged thoughout and laughing out loud as well. So, parents beware; yes there are weapons and yes there is plenty of fighting but no noticeable blood (keeping it PG) and not-so-noticeable deaths. Highly recommended family diversion for a couple hours, although the film itself has a running time of 85 minutes. From the WeAreMovieGeeks team…Enjoy the holiday weekend of sequels!

WAMG’s Week of PANDA-Monium – Day 1: KUNG FU PANDA 2 Prize Pack Giveaway & Meet The New Characters

It’s PANDA-monium week here at WAMG! In honor of DreamWorks Animation’s KUNG FU PANDA 2, every day this week the Geeks will bring you a new story on Po and the Furious Five. Afterwards, look for a special daily giveaway of a Panda Prize Pack. Grand Prize will be awarded on Friday! Talk about The Year of Awesomeness!!

Get ready to be introduced to some new characters, as well as some old friends, from KUNG FU PANDA 2.

First up, Lord Shen!

Lord Shen is hyper intelligent, supremely lethal, and burns with ambition. It’s a combustible combination. His past has forged in him the notion that he’s been wronged and that the world owes him something. He intends to do everything in his power to take it, which includes inventing a weapon unlike anything the world has ever seen. He’s intent on wiping out kung fu and taking over China. That puts him on a collision course with Po and The Five.

The aged Soothsayer has been advisor to the Peacocks, rulers of Gongmen City, her entire life. She is wise and gifted with knowledge of the future. She speaks in riddles and nonsense, which can be easily (and foolishly) dismissed by those who do not realize her power. She has lived with the burden of a dark prediction she made years ago. Her redemption lies in a warrior of black and white – Po.

Master Thundering Rhino, wielder of the legendary Cloud Hammer, is the benevolent leader of the Kung Fu Council, which protects the vast metropolis of Gongmen City. Thundering Rhino is descended from a long line of masters. He trained under his father, Master Flying Rhino, and became legendary in his own right by slaying the Ten Thousand Serpents in the Valley of Woe. As head of the Kung Fu Council, he is revered for his wisdom, kind humor, and good deeds.

Master Storming Ox is Master Thundering Rhino’s greatest pupil. As a youngster he skipped his chores, sneaking through Gongmen City into the palace to watch Master Rhino spar. Master Rhino rewarded the young Ox’s enthusiasm by training him in kung fu. Master Ox went on to prove his skill and bravery by taking on the seventy-two bandits of the Wing Cho province with naught but his bare horns. Often hotheaded, favoring action over contemplation, Ox is a constant challenge for his old Master. But he is also a loyal friend and trusted member of the Kung Fu Council, which protects the citizens of peaceful Gongmen City.

Master Croc was once the head of the infamous Wool Stealing Crocodile Bandits of Crocodile Island – a gang of criminals unmatched in their mischief. Anyone foolish enough to stand in Croc’s way was dispatched with his Legendary Lashing Tail of Terror technique – until the day Croc crossed paths with Master Thundering Rhino, whose kung fu was proven superior in their epic battle on the shores of the Wa Su Li River. Beaten, Master Croc prepared himself for death, but the fatal blow never came. Master Rhino asked Croc to use his kung fu excellence for good. Croc was so moved by Master Rhino’s compassion that he quit his criminal ways then and there. He roamed China, righting wrongs and protecting the weak – and eventually came to sit at Rhino’s side as a member of the Kung Fu Council. Croc, as strong as an ox and as wily as a fox, is famous for his many victories, not the least of which was his silencing of the Badger Bandits who talked about his Mom.

The Wolf Boss and his pack were once guards in Gongmen City’s royal palace. The only member of the royal family ever to befriend him was Shen, the albino heir to Gongmen City’s throne. The Wolf Boss swore his allegiance to the young prince. He is Shen’s most loyal servant, military strategist and trusted right paw.

The Gorillas are the muscle in Lord Shen’s army. If his evil schemes require any heavy lifting, they’ll be the ones doing it. Shen’s personal guard is made up entirely of these powerful (and powerfully large) brutes, who are honor bound to their master.

Mantis may be the smallest of the five, but he’d never admit it. The little guy has a textbook Napoleon complex: strong, fast and tiny. He possesses a mean temper and is ready to ‘throw down’ at the slightest insult. Nothing can strike fear into his brave little heart… except a female mantis. (Check with an entomologist & you’ll understand why.)

Crane is the pragmatist of the group. Reluctant to resort to violence, he’s a think first, punch second kind of bird. Sometimes a well placed quip is the strongest technique. He’ll try to avoid a fight, if at all possible… but if he can’t avoid it, he’ll do everything he can to win it. The safety of his fellow Kung Fu-ers is his first priority. He’s willing to risk his life to protect them.

Viper is the ‘mother hen’ of the group. It takes a cool head and a warm heart to manage the sometimes conflicting personalities of the Furious Five. But don’t let her gentle nature fool you. Viper is a lightning fast warrior capable of taking down the most intimidating foe. Her power lies in her strength, her sinuous nature, her precision… oh, and then there’s that deadly strike of hers.

Tigress is the strongest and boldest of the Kung Fu masters. Basically, she’s everything you’d want in a hero: over-achieving, brave, fearless and, well, heroic… she’d do anything to save the day. She is unwaveringly loyal to Po and what he represents as the Dragon Warrior. But underneath her stoic, iron-jawed exterior is a warm compassion that others seldom see.

Mr. Ping may have lost his best, and only, employee to kung fu greatness, but he couldn’t be more proud of his panda son. In fact, Mr. Ping has decked out the noodle shop in honor of Po’s epic exploits. But like any parent left at home, Dad worries about being forgotten. Therefore he makes sure to always have extra helpings of bean buns ready to feed the Dragon Warrior whenever he stops by.

Freshly plucked from his duties as apprentice noodle maker at his dad’s shop, Po is now the legendary Dragon Warrior. But despite all the adulation, Po is the same humble panda. Ever the fan boy, he is just as likely to stare slack-jawed at his fellow Furious Five’s Kung Fu moves, as he is to dish out some himself. Though he is living out his dreams fighting alongside the stars of the Kung Fu world, Po’s journey is not complete. The role of Dragon Warrior comes with new challenges and responsibilities Po must face on his way to becoming the best Kung Fu warrior he can be.
