A WORKING MAN Review

I’m always excited about the opening of a new Jason Statham action flick. A WORKING MAN is directed by David Ayer, who had just collaborated with Jason on last year’s excellent BEEKEEPER thrill-fest. It’s co-written by Sylvester Stallone, who (to my surprise) has 44 feature screenplay credits under his Rocky Balboa title belt, mostly for films he starred in. Them ain’t been none too high on brain fodder, but they reliably delivered the desired level of adrenaline boosting.

In this one, Statham plays a former super-soldier running a construction crew for a cozy family business owned by Joe Garcia (Michael Pena), assisted by his collegian daughter Jenny (Arianna Rivas). When Jenny is snatched from a nightclub for unknown nefarious reasons, Jason has to kick-start his old particular set of skills to rescue the lass.

What follows is the accustomed path of working his way up the criminal food chain to save the girl while wiping out a slew of evildoers along the way. This entails deployment of feet, fists, some big knives, a helluva lotta guns, two grenades and a bomb. Unfortunately, the bomb isn’t IN the script. It IS the script.

For all the rounds of ammo fired, the bullets leave fewer holes than the plot. The details are too aggravating to enumerate. If you see this turkey anyway, take a note pad to keep track of them for some fun. Or wait for the streaming release, gather some pals and make it a drinking game. Down a shot every time something doesn’t make sense. No one will be able to drive home safely.

The action sequences were terrific in BEEKEEPER. But this one isn’t nearly as Statham-y as that was. Too much shooting, without his usual screen time of masterful hand-to-hand. Even worse, the choppy edits and dark settings made those clashes less exciting than one should expect from Ayers and Statham.

A couple of possible explanations come to mind. Perhaps Jason was ill or injured and they couldn’t find a stunt double who could adequately match his looks and moves. Or maybe the lighting crew went on strike, and they had to film without enough illumination. The sound was no bargain, either. Much of the dialog was hard to understand because of mumbling or background noises. That may have been a blessing, because the stuff one could hear wasn’t very engaging.

The structure of the story and the makeup of the eponymous hero were pure Statham – the elements that have made him a long-running star, thriving ever since his trio of TRANSPORTER flicks. But the execution here lets him and his fans down. Badly.

A WORKING MAN opens in theaters on Friday, Mar. 28.

Jason Statham And Director David Ayer Are Back In A WORKING MAN – See The Kick-Ass First Trailer

From Beekeeper to Bricklayer, Jason Statham and director David Ayer team up once again for the new film, A WORKING MAN, and boy are we excited!

Levon Cade left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life working construction. But when his boss’s daughter, who is like family to him, is taken by human traffickers, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined.

Catch the brand new trailer now and see it in theaters on March 28th.

The film stars Jason Statham, Jason Flemyng, Merab Ninidze, Maximilian Osinski, Cokey Falkow, with Michael Peña and David Harbour, also featuring Noemi Gonzalez, Arianna Rivas, Emmett J. Scanlan, Eve Mauro.

A WORKING MAN screenplay is by Sylvester Stallone and David Ayer and based on the book “Levon’s Trade” by Chuck Dixon.

In his review of THE BEEKEEPER (one of our favs of 2024), Mark Glass says the lead guy is “a whole lot of Statham at his Statham-est.” Check out the movie streaming on Prime Video here.

Director David Ayer is one of WAMG’s favorite filmmakers and his movies are must-sees for any movie geek. Most of his films you can find on streaming including END OF WATCH on PRIME VIDEO, THE TAX COLLECTOR, BRIGHT and SABOTAGE on Netflix, the underappreciated SUICIDE SQUAD on MAX, and my personal favorite – the brilliant FURY film from 2014.

A WORKING MAN has been rated R for strong violence, language throughout, and drug content.

THE BEEKEEPER – Review

Jason Statham stars as Clay in director David Ayer’s THE BEEKEEPER. An Amazon MGM Studios film. Photo Credit: Courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios © 2024 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Inc. All Rights Reserved.

By now, Jason Statham’s fans expect his movies to have a generous dose of over-the-top action sequences, with little regard for the creativity (or even coherence) of the plot. Ka-ching! THE BEEKEEPER stirs up plenty of adrenaline in a standard story line that sets up a whole lot of Statham at his Statham-est.

There’s a bit of JOHN WICK in the premise of THE BEEKEEPER. Statham is a retired super-secret, super-skilled government agent, trying to live quietly, just tending to his titular hives. He rents space from a kind, elderly lady (Phylicia Rashad), who promptly gets conned out of all her savings and $2 mil from a charity she helps manage by a multi-million dollar internet scamming operation. They target victims via spyware that freezes computers and directs their unsuspecting owners to call a number for the remedy. That leads them to a massive call center, teeming with operatives who clean out whatever they can by getting account info and passwords from the innocents.

Thus begins Jason’s obligatory revenge course, progressively wrecking facilities and killing henchmen and honchos as he works his way up the ladder to the top dogs. Jeremy Irons adds a touch of class as a former head of the CIA, overseeing security and covering up the crimes and excesses of the pyramid’s despicable young leader (Josh Hutcherson). His character’s biggest challenge is hiding his contempt for that boss.

For a kicker, Rashad’s character just happens to be the mother of an FBI agent (Emmy Raver-Lampman) who doggedly pursues the same network of baddies, but strictly by-the-book, while honor-bound to stop Statham’s vengeance campaign. His heroism is amplified by (too many) speeches about protecting the helpless from their predators and disabling, rather than killing, most of the cops and clueless henchmen who don’t know the scum-iosity (scum-ishness? scum-ery?) of their employers.

The over-the-top action is properly exciting, except for director David Ayer framing many parts of the fights too close to the lens to fully appreciate the stunt work before us. The plot goes truly off the sanity charts as Statham zeroes in on the top bananas. I ain’t sayin’ no more about that. Better for you to learn the rest in the moment.

As one of the producers, Statham seemingly spent far more on F/X and stunts than on Kurt Wimmer’s script and cast salaries. Wimmer has penned quite a few action flicks, including THE EXPENDABLES 4, in which Statham co-starred.

Basically, it’s an amalgam of every revenge flick you’ve ever seen, especially by establishing Statham as an analog to Wick, by not being the boogeyman but the one you send to kill the boogeyman. I half-expected someone to describe him as the Baba Yaga.

Most cast members with speaking roles portray their personae adequately to adroitly. Those characters without dialog will be destined for orthopedic wards (if they’re lucky) or a coffin before the credits roll.

Whenever Statham is kicking butts on the screen, mine will most likely be in a seat watching it. Suspend a bit more than usual of your disbelief and enjoy the fun stuff.

THE BEEKEEPER opens in theaters (or, for England’s Mr. Statham, cinemas) on Friday, Jan. 12.

Catch A Listen To The SUICIDE SQUAD Soundtrack From Composer Steven Price

WaterTower Music has released a first track from the score to director David Ayer’s highly anticipated SUICIDE SQUAD, featuring the music of Academy Award-Winning composer Steven Price.

Price was tasked with navigating musically the colorful storyline of an assembled team of the world’s most dangerous Super-Villains and the emotional highs and lows they experience on an impossible mission.

“David’s film invited me to find a way to bring all of these incredible misfit outsiders together as a united force, with a thematic score that goes from moments of quiet emotion to huge action sequences,” explains Price. “The character’s themes interact and develop as the film progresses, and we witness the birth of the Suicide Squad. The score was a huge challenge, but a fantastic amount of fun to write!”

In 2014, his groundbreaking score for Alfonso Cuaron’s GRAVITY (Interview) won the British composer not only the Academy Award but also the BAFTA, Critics’ Choice and Satellite Award, as well as ASCAP’s first-ever Film Composer of The Year Award.

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Top Ten Tuesday – Comic-Con 2015

Comic-Con-2

Another San Diego Comic-Con International has come and gone. This year was a great year for films, friends, and fun! Check out my Top 10 cinematic moments from this years con. Also, be sure to share your favorite moments from this year. I’d love to hear from you! Now, let’s get started!

10. BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

batmanvsuperman-comic-con-art-560x378

Let me start off by saying that I have not been looking forward to this film. I’m not stoked on the new batsuit, and disagree with their casting of Lex Luthor, simply because I feel as though the character should be older. Having said that, this is the best trailer that I have seem thus far, and I really hope that they prove me wrong. Check out the all new trailer that debuted in Hall H and let me know what you think!

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

9. FANTASTIC FOUR

Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Miles Teller seen at the Twentieth Century Fox Presentation at 2015 Comic Con on Saturday, July 11, 2015, in San Diego. (Photo by Eric Charbonneau/Invision for Twentieth Century Fox/AP Images)

The FANTASTIC FOUR trailer was also released in Hall H, during the Fox panel on Saturday evening. In it, we see Dr. Doom’s powers and a young Reed Richards building a teleportation device in the garage. I’m a big fan of origin stories, so I’m curious to see the transformations of the characters. Plus, Miles Teller is an incredible performer. I’m excited to see what he can bring to a superhero.

Director Josh Trank’s FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways.

Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

8. WARCRAFT

IMG950665-560x420

From Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures comes WARCRAFT, an epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based on Blizzard Entertainment’s global phenomenon. This movie has been in production for years, but this is the first time that they showed an eager Hall H crowd any clips of the film. Unfortunately, I cannot show you those because they have yet to be released. It was really neat too, because they opened up all of the curtains, so we were surrounded by video screens. You wouldn’t get the same effect from a YouTube clip. I can, however, show you these badass character posters that they showed us. Hopefully, they will release a trailer soon!

11707962_513987548766875_7608262803343338531_o-560x851 11412014_513987542100209_2708685927754570071_o-560x850

The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.

7. THE HIVE

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 1.02.58 PM

Nerdiest Presents : THE HIVE had a pretty good run at Comic-Con this year. I sat down with Director David Yarovesky and stars Gabriel Basso, Gabrielle Walsh, Jacob Zachar and Steve Agee to talk about their film, and pick on each other a bit. Check it out here.

They also released the first trailer for the film. You should watch it. You might recognize someone’s name… [Cough… Cough… Me… Cough]

When Camp Yellow Jacket has fallen into chaos, teen counselor Adam wakes up in a boarded up cabin with no memory of who or where he is. His only clue as to what’s happening is the notes he’s scrawled for himself on the walls and the disturbing physical transformation he must overcome. The only memories he has aren’t his own, yet those memories may be the key to Adam’s survival.

6. SUICIDE SQUAD

suicide-squad-costume-560x399

See what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero in this first trailer, directly from Comic-Con 2015, for director David Ayer’s SUICIDE SQUAD. Not only did the cast take a break from filming in Toronto, but they blew Hall H away with this surprise teaser. People could not stop talking about Jared Leto as The Joker. In fact, the SUICIDE SQUAD trailer got way more buzz than BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE.

The action adventure brings DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen and stars two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith as Deadshot; Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto as the Joker; Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg; Jai Courtney as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.

5. THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2

Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence seen at Lionsgate “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" Presentation at 2015 Comic Con on Thursday, July 9, 2015, in San Diego. (Photo by Eric Charbonneau/Invision for Lionsgate/AP Images)

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’s Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Willow Shields, Director Francis Lawrence, and Producer Nina Jacobson held a Press Conference after their Hall H panel at the Hilton Bayfront, and WAMG was there. Check out the press conference in its entirety below as Jennifer talks reality TV, Malibu, and playing such a strong character. Video is below… because, come on… there’s no other way to capture the essence of J-Law’s awesomeness!

With the nation of Panem in a full-scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow [Donald Sutherland] in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale [Liam Hemsworth], Finnick [Sam Claflin] and Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to liberate the citizens of Panem, and stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.

4. VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN

The award for funniest panel, by far, goes to VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN. James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe kept attendees in stitches, as the panel basically turned into one big dick joke. Chris Hardwick only added to the fun as moderator. Check it out below…

Written by Max Landis, when Dr. Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) and his trusted assistant Igor (Daniel Radcliffe) go too far in their noble attempts to aid humanity, Victor’s obsession turns to madness. He then unleashes his final creation –a monstrous figure that holds unimaginable terror for anyone its path.

3. THE HATEFUL EIGHT

Screen Shot 2015-07-14 at 2.29.03 PM

Quentin Tarantino is back with his eighth film, THE HATEFUL EIGHT, and tore Hall H up! I was really excited for this, since I have yet to do a Tarantino film junket, and am a huge fan. Despite the rough start (such as a leaked script), Tarantino’s newest adventure is sure to be anything but ordinary! Filmed in Telluride, Colorado, this spaghetti western takes place roughly around a decade after the Civil War. Eight strangers find themselves stranded in a blizzard. They may survive the blizzard, but can they survive each other? Check out the video below!

THE HATEFUL EIGHT features an amazing cast such as Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Samuel L. Jackson, and Michael Madsen. Since it’s a Tarantino film, be ready for some next level gun slinging!  I don’t normally camp out for Hall H, but I got in there for this one. It was worth it!

2. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Fans at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H were treated to a special look behind the scenes of Star Wars:The Force Awakens by director J.J. Abrams, producer and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and writer Lawrence Kasdan.

The filmmakers were joined on stage by cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford to the surprise and delight of fans.

At the end of the Hall H presentation, the entire Hall H audience of more than 6,000 fans were all invited to continue the celebration and join cast and filmmakers at a surprise Star Wars Fan Concert. The San Diego Symphony performed the classic Star Wars music from John Williams at the Embarcadero Marina Park South.
