Wes Craven Confirmed to SCREAM 4 April 2011

It’s been an up and down struggle for a few years, now, but official word has finally come down that both Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven are coming back for SCREAM 4.  According to Variety, the new film, which already has Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox Arquette, and David Arquette reprising their respective roles, will begin shooting this spring for an April 15th, 2011 release.

This will put the release of the fourth film at more than a decade behind SCREAM 3, which released on February 4th, 2000.  That’s right, folks, it’s been more than a decade since SCREAM 3.  You’re getting old.  I guess, with this kind of gap between films, we’re just lucky they’re going the fourth installment rather than “reboot” the entire franchise.  Drew Barrymore would still play a high schooler, no doubt.

In a statement, Dimension Films head Bob Weinstein said the SCREAM series is such an integral part to Dimension’s history, and he looks forward to continuing the franchise.  I guess this means a whole, new trilogy is in the works.  If anyone can pull it off, it’s Williamson and Craven.  As hideous as this news might be, I’m just glad all the principals are back to take us on yet another Ghostface thrill ride.  It was going to happen inevitably, anyway.  Let’s just hope the mainstays of the original trilogy can punch out a another thrilling entry.

Kevin Williamson Reveals SCREAM 4 Setting

In the “not as confusing as Ridley Scott’s timeline for the ALIEN PREQUEL” department (not much really is), screenwriter Kevin Williamson released more information about the upcoming SCREAM 4 via MTV and his Twitter page.  In fact, he gave up some information regarding the upcoming, new trilogy of SCREAM films.

Here is what he had to say:

The fourth one is an ensemble.  It’ll take place right now, 10 years later, and it’s going to take place in [Sidney Prescott’s hometown of] Woodsboro. We’ll have our three main characters, and we’ll be introducing several more.  We’ll also be introducing a little group, a little ensemble of new castmembers. That’ll take us through the next three.

Williamson is concurrently writing the screenplay for SCREAM 5 and, from what we can gauge by his comments above, SCREAM 6 isn’t too far off.  With this many SCREAM sequels on the horizon, some (okay, probably, most) people might think it a bit ridiculous.

Williamson comments on that, too:

I guess I’ll just have to be very aware of the fact that we’re a ‘4’ and that we’re beating a dead dog. I’m going to make that very apparent in the dialogue.

No release date has been set for the fourth SCREAM film.

‘Scream 4’ Two Arquettes Closer to Being Done

‘Scream 4’ looks to be on the move and coming soon to your theaters.  We brought you news early last month that David Arquette and Courtney Cox-Arquette were approached by screenwriter Kevin Williamson to return to their respective roles of Deputy Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers.  Evidently, Williamson, who is writing the screenplay for ‘Scream 4,’ didn’t want to even both including the characters in his script if the actors weren’t going to return. Arquettes Returning for ‘Scream’ Reboot?

The idea is to churn out these reboots as quickly as friggin’ possible now, right?   Isn’t it about time to reboot ‘Benjamin Button’?   Doesn’t ‘The Wrestler’ need to be remade immediately only with a younger character, and it revolves around Sumo wrestling.

Evidently, writer/director Kevin Williamson is planning a new trilogy of ‘Scream’ films.   Of course, while this planned trilogy of films is regarded as a reboot/relaunch of the original franchise that began in 1996, Williamson is planning on many of the same characters and actors to return.   David Arquette and Courtney Cox Arquette have reportedly been approached by Williamson to reprise their respective roles.   Schedules are being hammered out and negotiations are underway, but I would put down some solid money that both of these actors will return.   For sure David Arquette will likely return.   Courtney Cox Arquette has her new show, Cougar Town, premiering on ABC, but we’ll see how long that lasts.

Okay.   Let’s analyze.   It’s a new set of ‘Scream’ films.   It has some of the same characters as the original trilogy.   These same characters are to be played by the exact same actors.   Soooooooo…..it’s a sequel?   Yeah.   I think that makes it a sequel.

Whether the Arquettes return or not, I’m sure Williamson is going to finish his screenplay, and slapping the ‘Scream’ title on it will surely get it funded.   The chances of us seeing a new ‘Scream’ in the next few years are fairly good.
