Abrams talks about ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel

J.J. Abrams and his crew of lively ‘Cloverfield’ co-creators are toying with ideas for another ambiguously mysterious massive monster movie, be it a sequel or perhaps a follow-up.

During a promotional junket in San Fran while at WonderCon, Abrams let the following information loose upon the civilians:

“We’re working on one right now,” Abrams said on Saturday (Feb. 28). “The key obviously is with a sequel, certainly with this film, is that it had better not be a business decision. If you’re going to do something, it should be because you’re really inspired to do it. It doesn’t guarantee anything and it doesn’t mean that it’s gonna work, but it means you did what you did and not because you’re trying to make a buck. We have an idea for something that’s pretty cool that we’re playing with. It’s something that would be related to ‘Cloverfield’ and hopefully we’ll do something sooner than later, because the idea’s pretty sweet.” — Courtesy of HitFix.com

So, what do you think? Personally, my little respect-o-meter just went up a few notched for Mr. Abrams based solely on his comments around why anyone should even pursue making a sequel. Is this something you’re looking forward to? Should he let it go and do something new? Let us know what you think by leaving comments on this post.

‘Let The Right One In’ Remake decides original title is too long and is renamed to ‘Let Me In’

Most fans of the original Swedish film ‘Let the Right One In’ knew that it was going to be remade.   According to Bloody-Disgusting.com, the remake has been renamed to ‘Let Me In’ and has also learned, via Production Weekly, that the re-do will start shooting in May of this year.

Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) has helmed the script and will behind the director’s chair as well.   Distribution will be handled by Overture Films and Hammer Films for a tenative release on January 15, 2010.

Count the renaming news as Misstep Number 1 for me.

Character Cage Match: Godzilla vs. Cloverfield

ccm_godzillacloverfield

If you think both characters are evenly matched then label your response DRAW. If you’d like to add other similarities that I may have missed, feel free to list them as well.

This week’s showdown… Albeit a more obvious match up:

Godzilla (1998) vs. Cloverfield

Nevertheless, the question must be asked… Who would win this ferocious confrontation between these two behemoths?

Both are:

  • are tremendous in size.
  • terrorized New York City.
  • are scaly.
  • are somewhat immune to tanks and any sort of weapon.
  • are apparently Asexual organisms?
  • apparently have nice limbs (I guess they work out)
  • have a fetish for munching on helicopters.
  • were overly hyped.

Make your choice known by leaving comments below. If you think the characters are evenly matched, then label your response DRAW. If you’d like to add other similarities that I may have missed, feel free to list them as well.

J.J. Abrams’ ‘Earthquake’? Start the Viral Marketing in 3, 2, 1…

Is it the Cloverfield monster?   Is it the island?   Is it a Rembaldi Geometric Device?   Only J.J. Abrams knows for sure.

It appears the producer is planning to team with screenwriter David Seltzer, ‘The Omen’, on a disaster flick for Universal that includes an earthquake.

The film has no title as of yet and is evidently not a remake of the 1974, Charlton Heston vehicle ‘Earthquake’.   In fact, in high Abrams fashion, most details are being kept under tight lock and key.   The only real detail given so far is, like ‘Cloverfield’, the film will deal with relationships.

Office pools abound as to when the first viral website will be set up to coincide with the new film.

Paramount Wasting No Time On ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel

With the barf bags still cooling on the theater floors of the motion-sickness-inducing hit Cloverfield, Paramount is springing into action to ensure that the monster’s reign of terror is far from over.   Variety reports that Cloverfield director Matt Reeves is in talks with the company to make directing the sequel his next project.   If so, it’ll mean Reeves’ other upcoming project, the suspense-thriller The Invisible Woman, will be put on the back burner for now.   Reeves certainly has his mind on Cloverfield possibilities, if recent interviews are any indication.   This from Bloody-Disgusting.com’s chat with Reeves at the film’s premiere:

“While we were on set making the film we talked about the possibilities and directions of how a sequel can go.   The fun of this movie was that it might not have been the only movie being made that night, there might be another movie!   In today’s day and age of people filming their lives on their iphones and handy cams, uploading it to youtube…That was kind of exciting thinking about that.”

Whether or not this immediate sequel business happens will heavily rely on producer J.J. Abrams and screenwriter Drew Goddard hammering out a new story for the sequel in time.   If not, audiences will have to settle for actual youtube footage, which the last time I checked was 90% less ‘terrifying’ and 90% more ‘cats being funny’.
