Hayao Miyazaki’s PRINCESS MONONOKE (1997) is  reportedly a delightful anime from the man who has come to define everything that is best about the genre, I’ve never seen it, but Miyazaki always brings in the crowds for the midnight shows so I’m sure it’s a worthy choice. PRINCESS MONONOKE was Miyazaki’s calling card to the world outside Japan. The English voice cast boasts Billy Crudup, Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Gillan Anderson and Keith David – a considerable volume of talent for an animation back in 1997 (TOY STORY was 1995), arguably marking the beginning of another trend – for big names to be heard and not seen. Essentially a statement on the ecological devastation brought on by human advancement, the story follows the battle between Princess Mononoke and a mining village.

See The New Poster For Sundance Hit BRIGSBY BEAR

Sony Pictures Classics has released a new poster for the indie hit BRIGSBY BEAR.

The film was an Official Selection at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, as well as the 2017 Cannes Critics’ Week Closing Film.

In Variety’s review from the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, writer Geoff Berkshire said, “BRIGSBY BEAR is the rare festival movie where the main character is experiencing the exact same sensation, and that creates an exhilarating viewing experience that works in the film’s favor. Whether or not this collaboration between childhood friends Dave McCary, Kevin Costello, and Kyle Mooney will hold the same appeal after marketing campaigns reveal many of the quirkiest surprises is an open question. But the eccentric, heartfelt curio is sure to attract a cult following under any conditions.”

Friday night’s Los Angeles Film Festival gala for director Dave McCary’s BRIGSBY BEAR was screened at the Arclight Hollywood.

Brigsby Bear Adventures is a children’s TV show produced for an audience of one: James (Kyle Mooney). When the show abruptly ends, James’s life changes forever, he sets out to finish the story himself and must learn to cope with the realities of a new world that he knows nothing about.

The film stars Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Claire Danes, Mark Hamill, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Greg Kinnear, Kate Lyn Sheil, Ryan Simpkins, Matt Walsh and Michaela Watkins.

Look for the film in select theaters July 28th.

Claire Danes In AS COOL AS I AM First Look Photo

Currently in post-production, Radiant Films International has announced it will be handling the foreign rights to the heartwarming comedy drama AS COOL AS I AM. Starring Claire Danes (“Homeland,” THE HOURS), James Marsden (X-MEN), Sarah Bolger (THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES), Thomas Mann (PROJECT X), Jeremy Sisto (ROBOT & FRANK) and two time Academy Award nominee Peter Fonda (ULEE’S GOLD), the film centers around a bright and intelligent teenage girl, Lucy (Bolger) and her almost boyfriend Kenny (Mann), who come of age in a small rural town. With her often absent and very young parents (Marsden and Danes) more in need of guidance and parenting than their daughter, Lucy turns to cooking shows to cope with the turbulent pains of adolescence and finds particular comfort in the celebrated culinary personality, Mario Batali. While Lucy charges ahead toward womanhood and her dream of becoming a chef, her mother is desperately searching for her own bigger life in this family comedy filled with laughter, tears, sex, love and pasta.

AS COOL AS I AM is from director Max Mayer (ADAM) and writer by Virginia Korus Spragg (AN UNFINISHED LIFE) based on the novel by Pete Fromm. Mayer’s feature film ADAM, starring Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Radiant’s sales slate will include the newly announced THE CITIZEN and TRUST ME. THE CITIZEN tells the story of an Arab immigrant named Ibrahim (played by celebrated Egyptian actor Khaled Nabawy from FAIR GAME) who wins the American green card lottery, arriving in New York City on September 10th, 2001. ME AND ORSEN WELLES and a Domestic Trailer

me and orson welles

As one of the secret screenings from this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, I am still kicking myself for not making time to see Richard Linklater’s latest, ‘Me and Orson Welles.’  The film stars Zac Efron as a student who works his way into a secondary role in the then 22-year-old Welles’ stage adaptation of “Julius Caesar.”  The film also stars Christian McKay as Welles, Claire Danes, Ben Chaplin, Kelly Reilly, Eddie Marsan, Leo Bill, Imogen Poots and Aidan McArdle.

Today, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, we have the domestic trailer for the film.

Check it out:

The film looks very poignant, and it could be just the role that breaks Efron out of the ‘High School Musical’ game and into some real acting roles.  McKay looks brilliant, as well.

‘Me and Orson Welles’ opens on November 25th.

Fantasy Cast: Who should play Eliza Doolittle in the ‘My Fair Lady’ remake?

fantasycast

So, perhaps this week’s Fantasy Cast is more geared towards the ladies, but I’m not ashamed to admit that the original 1964 feature film MY FAIR LADY is among the very best of cinematic musicals. Then again, it doesn’t hurt that I find Audrey Hepburn nearly as fascinating as Marilyn Monroe, but not for all the same reasons. Then again, Eliza Doolittle is a character similar in some odd ways to the character of Marilyn Monroe that Norma Jeane Baker created to secure her own fame and success. Hang on, I’ve gone off on a tangent again.

myfairlady01

The 1964 film has been a favorite with the genre fans for decades, starring the beautiful Audrey hepburn alongside Rex Harrison and directed by Geroge Cukor. The story follows a poor cockney flower girl (Hepburn) who happens upon an upper class phoenetics professor (Harrison) who wagers that he can turn her into a high class, proper English-speaking member of society in record time, but fails to recognize the effects it will have on the poor girl as she struggles to cope with her new self.

myfairlady02 It’s recently been revealed that Columbia Pictures and Toledo Productions have optioned the rights to remake this beloved musical. Alan Jay Lerner and Geroge Bernard Shaw are currently writing wrote the script. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but plenty of rumors have been generated. One of such rumors involves the possibility of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE director Danny Boyle being considered to helm the remake. Of course, no remake of MY FAIR LADY could ever succeed without the perfect actress being cast for the role. Now, to suggest that anyone is more perfect than Audrey Hepburn for this role could be called blasphemous, so we’ll assume the best and work with what we have. Rumors have surfaced here as well with two top contenders being hyped. Some camps are vying for Claire Danes to wear the massive victorian hats, whereas other camps are inclined to go with Keira Knightley. Personally, I feel a third viable candidate to consider is Anne Hathaway. It’s certainly a tough call…
fcf_clairedanes fcf_annehathaway fcf_keiraknightley

There you have it. Three choices for a role that many consider sacred. Of course, nothing says we have to stop there. Who would you like to see cast as Eliza Doolittle? Heck, should the film even be made? If you don’t like these casting options, go ahead and tell us who you see as the perfect “second” choice to Audrey Hepburn. Let us all know how you feel and what your vote is by leaving comments below. And, as always, if you have any ideas for future Fantasy Casts, shoot us an email with your ideas.
