THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE – Review

(from left) Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) in Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

As I mentioned in last week’s review of the big D&D flick (which topped the box office charts), the 2023 Spring season of game and toy based-movies has finally reached its biggest destination, or at least until Mattel’s “power couple” arrives. And much like last week’s trio of releases, it’s a nostalgic ‘deep dive”, going back over 40 years. Mind you this duo and their giant video game franchise hit the big screen 30 years, in live-action, and is now considered a loopy bit of campy fun. Ah, but there’s no more glued-on phony facial hair in this one because it’s all rendered in lush computer-generated animation by one of the more successful not-Pixar studios of the past couple of decades. But can they jump (and gobble and drive) from the minions to tackle THE SUPER MARIO BROS> MOVIE? And…start…

Before we get to meet the guys, we’re transported to a weird world of ice where an army of fierce fightin’ penguins meets their match in the Kupa turtle army led by the menacing, fire-breathing Bowser (voice of Jack Black). Meanwhile, back in the Big Apple, scrappy plumber bros Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) have opened up their own repair biz but don’t get any respect from former boss Spike ( Sebastian Maniscalco) or even their own family. And after a disastrous first gig, they’re thinking about throwing in the (very wet) towel. But then Mario sees that their neighborhood is being flooded by water rising through the sewer grates and manhole covers. It looks like the city crews can’t get a handle on it, so the boys join the fight. Unfortunately, the water sweeps them further down, below the streets, into a long-neglected sub, sub-area. That’s when a weird glowing pipe sucks in the brothers. Luigi lands in a dark scary land, near of graveyard and a nearby black castle with a lava moat. Mario drops into the Mushroom (his least favorite food) Kingdom where he meets the helpful Toad (Keegan_Michael Key), who tells him that the best way to find Luigi is to ask the land’s ruler, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) for help. But she’s got her hands full with the news of the approaching Kupa army and Bowser (who wants to wed her). She believes that they must join forces with the Kong Kingdom and so the trio travels there. Their king, Cranky Kong (Fred Armisen) will only help if Mario can defeat his son, the reigning “maze-fighting” champ Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) in the big arena. But even if he’s victorious over the hulking brute, will Mario reunite with Luigi, before Bowser claims this strange land and sets his sights on the world above?

The all-star cast sounds as though they’re having a blast voicing these iconic characters that were probably a big part of their childhood. Pratt (who does a bit of the Italian dialect in an early sequence) is properly heroic and confident as Mario, even as his training and a certain ape pummel him. Day is the shakey, in-need-of-protecting kid brother who finally finds his inner warrior thanks to the love of his big bro. Taylor-Joy is an approachable princess, kind of a big sister or sitter to the duo, who is far from the typical storybook “damsel in distress”. Key is full of squeaky-voiced charm as the ever-helpful Toad. Armisen brings a bit of off-kilter snark to the rascally Cranky Kong. Bowser is given a gravely-voiced gravitas by Black (I keep thinking of Mickey’s nemesis Pete), who makes him into a soulful lounge lizard at the piano for his anthem love ballads for “Peaches”. Sure, they’re terrific, but the stand out for me was the perfect casting of Rogen as an agitated aggressive grumpy gorilla, who boasts while he bashes, but is capable of “niceness”. Seth’s familiar chuckle just sounds right coming out of the mouth of the muscular barrel-tosser.

Oh, the aforementioned animation house is the French branch of Illumination. This isn’t their first licensed property (the Seuss stories), so they ably adapt the pixel people into full fluid moving cartoon stars (there was a Saturday morning cartoon in the late 80s). As this is a co-production with Nintendo, the classic character designs are closely followed, somehow making the story work between the more “realistic” Peach to the “bigfoot-style” brothers, the 30s take on the Kongs, and the funny fiendish Bowser and his reptile crew. The use of 80s pop-tunes seems to work within the tale’s action beats. Bits of the gameplay (coins, boxes, and ‘shrooms) are cleverly dropped in, along with some witty bits of slapstick and dialogue. Special kudos to the color stylists who created some eye-popping rainbow-hued backdrops and props. This isn’t a huge ground-breaking achievement in animation history, but it moves along at a good pace for both kids and their folks making this “family fare” that’s better than most world expect. Maybe I wouldn’t use that “s” word, but I’d say that smarty, stylish, and silly work for THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE. And Santa, how about a solo Donkey Kong spin-off flick, ‘puh-leeze’?!

Based on the world of Nintendo’s Mario games, the film invites audiences into a vibrant, thrilling new universe unlike any created before in an action-packed, exuberant cinematic comedy event.

While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad (Keegan-Michael Key; The Lion King) and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy;The Queen’s Gambit), Mario taps into his own power.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie features an extraordinary comedic cast, including Jack Black (Jumanji films) as Bowser, Seth Rogen (Neighbors franchise) as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen (Portlandia, Saturday Night Live) as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson (American Dad!, Family Guy) as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco (Green Book) as Spike, plus a special voice appearance by Charles Martinet, who has voiced the characters of Mario and Luigi in the Super Mario games for more than 30 years.

I WANT YOU BACK – Review

As you dash about making restaurant reservations and scheduling floral deliveries for the big holiday this weekend, do you ever think about those “non-participators”? I’m guessing that you may not during the whirlwind of “preps”. Sure. most of the “romantically challenged” hadn’t counted on joining in this Monday, but what about those who really thought they’d be toasting their “special someone”? As sort of “counter-programing” two of these “unfortunates” are the focus of a very twisted “rom-com”. This duo is completely “blindsided” by their respective “bust-ups”. So do they break out the ice cream as they plant themselves on the couch for a marathon streaming TV binge? Oh no, they hatch a scheme that loudly declares (though not out loud to the “targets”), I WANT YOU BACK.

The “shenanigans” start during a really awful weekend for our two main subjects. Funny, funky Emma (Jenny Slate) is finishing up a delicious brunch with her hunky beau Noah (Scott Eastwood), when he drops the “bomb”. He’s “moving on” and has a new “lady”, Ginny (Clark Backo), who owns her own trendy pie shop, while Emma hasn’t advanced (she’s still living in her old college apartment with new much-younger student roommates). Across town, affable, friendly Peter (Charlie Day) is frolicking with the “birthday boy’ at his girlfriend’s family’s party. He’s having a blast, but his gal Anne (Gina Rodriguez) seems distant and distracted. Peter finally pries the reason why from her: she’s done with his un-adventurous nature and has taken up with somebody that’s more “free-spirited”. He, like Emma, is completely stunned. But it’s back to work on Monday, so he attends a big morning meeting with the rest of the “team” at a major “senior retirement living center” management company…until he sees a social media pic of Anne and her new fella’. Peter dashes out of the conference room and heads to the building’s stairwell to compose himself. His sobbing is interrupted by a wail of anguish. It’s Emma, who works three floors below as a dental receptionist. The two bond over their shared heartache, and after an evening of karaoke they formulate a strategy. Grabbing info from their exes’ internet posts, they’ll help each other break up the new couples. Emma will seduce Anne’s guy, drama teacher Logan (Manny Jacinto), while Peter (he can’t compete with his beefcake perfection) will become pals with Noah and turn him against Ginny (the ole’ Iago ploy). But can this master plan really succeed? Can these conspirators really repair their old romances?

This “twisty-turny” farce provides a terrific showcase for its two engaging stars (who are deserving of a much larger audience). Slate has already “headlined’ in several interesting “indie” comedies (OBVIOUS CHILD and LANDLINE are the standouts), so her comedic ‘chops’ are proven. This time she reveals an endearing vulnerable side as the floundering Emma who tries to hide her pain behind a mask of snark. There’s an emotional wound, but Slate, through her moist eyes, shows that she thinks that maybe Emma is really “stuck”. Lucky for the filmmakers that she has caustic comic chemistry with Day who tempers his manic “motor-mouthed” delivery with a true sweetness as he questions his “mission”. And he too knows that he’s got to get out of his “comfort zone”, personally and professionally, as Pete was too scared of taking “risks”. And while their former flames would be the “baddies” in other flicks, the “dumpers” somehow don’t deserve our disdain. That’s due in large part to the work of Rodriguez and Eastwood. She’s wanting to “breakout’ before getting “settled”, but Anne still hesitates on making a big (sexual) “leap”. We know the camera adores Eastwood, but his warm take on Noah, closer to an “every-bro”, is moving, especially as he makes Peter his new “lil’ bro”. Oh ditto for their “new loves”. Backo’s a sweet career-minded woman who’s not taking the “plunge” till all is “right”. Jacinto’s a flighty spacey but sweet goofball (a slightly smarter take on his “The Good Place” TV role), who’s more adventurous than anyone thinks (aside from letting his middle school students put on a fairly adult musical). One of his students, Trevor. is played with natural ease by young Luke David Blumm, who has a touching rapport with Salte’s Emma.

Yes, as you may have surmised this is a “rom-com” riff on a Hitchcock classic, though it’s not the first funny “re-imagining” (that would be THROW MAMA FROM THE TRAIN from, really, 35 years ago). Rather than STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, this is “Strangers in a Stairwell” for the main premise. And it really is a “clever spin” on that chestnut thanks to the unpredictable script by TV vets Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Of course, we know that things won’t go completely according to Emma and Peter’s scheme, but the surprises and “turn arounds’ keep us invested and alert. The characters grow and emotionally change, thanks in part to the brief “detours”, particularly Emma’s warm friendship with Trevor in which she takes a big leap into “adulthood”. The story’s pace is solid thanks to the confident, directing from Jason Orley (pretty great for his sophomore feature film). It’s very strong for a comic romp with no true villains, but folks with different dreams and agendas. The Georgia locales are lovely, especially a big finale set aboard a riverboat. The film’s biggest plus is that I wanted to keep “hanging” with the characters just as the credits started to roll (a real rarity). Its biggest minus is the fact that it won’t be in theatres, since this film gives a nice “sheen” to the tarnished “rep” of “rom-coms”. Let’s hope we’ll see future pairings of Slate and Day because I WANT YOU BACK. Someday…

Peter (Charlie Day) and Emma (Jenny Slate) are total strangers, but when they meet, one thing instantly bonds them: they were both unexpectedly dumped by their respective partners, Anne (Gina Rodriguez) and Noah (Scott Eastwood), on the same weekend.  As the saying goes, “misery loves company,” but their commiseration turns into a mission when they see on social media that their exes have happily moved on to new romances, Anne with Logan (Manny Jacinto) and Noah with Ginny (Clark Backo).

Terrified that, in their 30s, they have lost their shot at happily ever after and horrified at the prospect of having to start over, Peter and Emma hatch a desperate plot to win the loves of their lives back. HOTEL ARTEMIS – Review

So film fans, are you up for an action-filled visit to the future? Now, this trek isn’t of the “star” variety, we’re not “warp-speeding” to far-off planets in a far-off century. This story is very earth-bound, much like the two BLADE RUNNER flicks, and also within this twenty-first century. The skies aren’t filled with flying cars, rather the sun is nearly obliterated from billowing smoke rising off bombed-out buildings and street skirmishes. Tomorrow’s not a glistening utopia in the next decade, but we’re not a MAD MAX wasteland quite yet. Oh, and this story doesn’t focus on the forces of law and order like Max and Rick Deckard. No, the central setting (really, almost the only setting) is a haven for criminals, a “members-only” secret hospital that’s taken over several floor of LA’s crumbling HOTEL ARTEMIS.

It’s 2028, exactly ten years from now, and Los Angeles is a war zone. Seems that the water distribution company has hiked the cost of precious fluid, sending the lower classes into the streets to protest (and things get ugly quickly). What a perfect time for a bank heist, or so thinks a quartet of dapper robbers. When things go south, they attempt to blend in with the rioters, but they instead get into a fire fight with heavily armed riot responders. After taking on lead, the remaining trio dash to Hotel Artemis which is run by a “stitch-em-up” medical whiz known only as the “Nurse” (Jodie Foster). When the robbers buzz the secret entrance, they are instructed to turn in their weapons (one of many rules there) and place their wrists next to a scanner to make sure they are “paid-in-full” members entitled to the Nurse’s services. One of the men is not in good standing, so he is shown the door (alley actually) by the hulking orderly known as Everest (Dave Bautista). The other two men are admitted and given code names based on their hotel rooms, which are named for idyllic vacation locales. Wakiki (Sterling K. Brown) has several minor wounds while his kid brother Honolulu (Bryan Tyree Henry) is in rough shape, with a major organ is full of holes (luckily the 3-D printer is put to use). But those men aren’t the only patients. Also recovering is Acapulco (Charlie Day), an obnoxious arms dealer anxious to escape the city. And there’s the exotic assassin Nice (Sofia Boutella). And even though she’s in recovery from a bullet hole in the hand, Nice is still secretly on a job. But who is her target? Things get more complicated when the Nurse spies a familiar face in the street via a  monitor just outside the entrance. It’s Morgan (Jenny Slate), an injured officer pleading for help. But cops are a big “no-no”, so what’s a nurse to do? Then a call comes in from aspiring gangster Crosby (Zachary Quinto). His father, the crime kingpin known as the “Wolf” AKIA Niagara (Jeff Goldblum) is badly hurt and will go nowhere closer (they’re about 50 minutes away). He bankrolled the hotel, so the Nurse can’t turn him away. How will the Nurse juggle all these “clients’ on what she calls”a typical Wednesday”?

What makes this flick different from most crime thrillers is not the near-future setting. No, what sets it apart is the triumphant acting return (five years, whoa) of Ms. Foster as the complex, compelling Nurse. She gives this character role a true star performance, becoming a woman seeming much older than her years, who’s beaten down by life and loss. That past finally bubbles back, refusing to go down the drain, but she never loses her steely demeanor and compulsion to repair the damage (“doctor, heal thyself’ applies). The Nurse is both the story’s anchor and driving force, and Foster handles the task superbly (welcome back). This is also a showcase for the talented Brown, best known for his TV work though he’s had a few supporting film roles (MARSHALL, BLACK PANTHER). Now he’s ready for movie leads, as he fills the screen with cool charisma in the tradition of Wesley Snipes and Denzel Washington. Wakiki is in control even as he must deal with a former flame played with sultry sass by the alluring Ms. Boutella, who we last saw in another deadly romance in ATOMIC BLONDE. Another great physical pretense is the towering Bautista, once again flexing his impressive comedic skills (his Drax effortlessly steals scenes in the big Avengers flick) as the Nurse’s enforcer/aide, or as he so humorously says, “a medical professional”. Speaking of scene stealers, and more cool charisma, Goldblum scores big laughs as the quirky kingpin tossing off real threats laced with casual cruelty. There’s also great work by Quinto as a sweaty, easily annoyed heir to a blood dynasty, and by Slate in a rare dramatic role as the key to the Nurse’s inner torment. The film’s only weak link may be the grating much too over-the-top screeching by Day as a most unlikely arms dealer. The charm he had in the HORRIBLE BOSSES flick is sadly absent. It’s just a poorly conceived, unnecessary character.

This marks the feature directing debut of Drew Pearce, who also penned the snarky, clever script (he was one of the writers on IRON MAN 3). He’s crafted a future that could easily be reached in a decade, much like the rom-com HER. Along with his crack production team they’ve made that future gritty and grimy, particularly the title hotel which has much better days. It’s a cavernous crypt with threadbare rugs and flickering bulbs. You can smell the musty death that lingers in those hallways. Then there’s the pain, as Pearce shows us that bullets do lasting, sweaty damage. Of course there’s also some great action set pieces including the botched bank job and one person facing an army in a tight hallway (still effective, so many years after OLDBOY, but in danger of becoming a cliché). This is coupled with some great suspense sequences (an army is busting in), claustrophobia (the rioters threaten at every opening) and comedy from Bautista and Goldblum. Buoyed by the fabulous Foster, HOTEL ARTEMIS floats above its “B” action programmer roots, making it worth a short stay.
