OUTLAWS AND ANGELS – Review

outlawsandangels

Review by Stephen Tronicek

Almost everything about Outlaws and Angels is confident. The actors are confident in their roles, the script is confident in its ability to shock, and the practical effects work on screen (a lot of fake blood) is confident in its ability to spray and look good while doing so.

Outlaws and Angels follows three outlaws who come across a family’s secluded settlement, and the majority of the film takes place in the family’s house as the outlaws, and the family attempt to get along. As mentioned the actors, script, and effects feel very confident in themselves. The actors are playing stock types of characters, but Outlaws and Angels is a bloody, nasty little movie, so the actors get to make the types their own. Francesca Eastwood (Yes, she’s the daughter of Clint) creates a perfectly unsubtle performance as Florence. As the story continues and twists Eastwood is the only thing keeping it grounded its own unhinged nature. As for the others, the heavy themes don’t require much in the way of special characterizations, so the performances end up feeling familiar but still arresting.

The script is extremely tense, and the places that it goes are surprisingly ghastly. The eventual reveals are shocking and suggest a worldview that everyone is deeply bad or at the very least corrupted. Some will probably have a problem with the places that Outlaws goes, but the sheer shock of it only bolsters the drama that is present in the film. The third act is foggy though as the character motivations soon become less understandable , almost  as if the movies just running out the clock following the garish displays of act two.

The use of practical effects brings to mind that the gory work of Sergio Leone Westerns, and the more recent Tarantino films, and it’s enthralling to see such incredibly bloody effects used in more than just a Tarantino movie.Unfortunately, the direction of Outlaws and Angels doesn’t feel quite as confident. At times it reaches the level of brilliance that the Coens and Tarantino achieved in their Westerns, but much of the time it falls short due to one aspect of filmmaking. The use of the handheld camera. The middle act is an intense verbal standoff between the outlaws and the family. This section of the film brings to mind Tarantino’s own The Hateful Eight in not only the isolated location and heavy use of dialogue, but also the conclusion. What differentiates it from the power that Eight holds though is that it’s less deliberate in its cutting and music. The handheld quick zooms, and shake effects during the conversation are certainly there to make the talk more intense, but almost do the opposite effect. Since the camera moves the same way during the entire conversation nothing is revealed about the characters through cinematography, and the tension of the scene collapses. This is odd because when the shooting style isn’t doing this director J.T. Molner creates some startlingly beautiful and brutal scenes with this style. A slow-motion killing scene involving the splatter of blood is beautifully composed. The other fault comes in the music used in the film. While certainly well composed, the music seems to play over some scenes that with silence could have held a thick air of suspense, but are drained of it by the presence of music.

There’s enough here though that makes the film shocking and entertaining. Those who have a problem with the more sadistic violence that the film uses, and the darker themes may not find enjoyment in it, but those who can find the violent and deeply disturbing story and themes cathartic will find the film a confident if oddly directed film.

Actor Bill Paxton is heading from the McCoy family patriarch of Kentucky to starring in The History Channel’s eight-hour television event series TEXAS RISING. Premiering Memorial Day 2015, the series will detail the Texas Revolution and the rise of the legendary Texas Rangers.

Paxton received Emmy and Screen Actors Guild nominations for playing “Randall McCoy” in The History Channel’s mega successful HATFIELDS & MCCOYS. The mini-series won five Emmy Awards.

Two-time Oscar-nominated director Roland Joffé (THE KILLING FIELDS, THE MISSION) is directing with an all-star cast which includes Paxton, Brendan Fraser, Ray Liotta, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olivier Martinez, Thomas Jane, Crispin Glover, Rhys Coiro, Jeremy Davies, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Christopher McDonald, Max Thieriot, Chad Michael Murray, Robert Knepper, Jeff Fahey, Rob Morrow and Kris Kristofferson.

In 1836, west of the Mississippi was considered the Wild West and the Texas frontier was viewed as hell on earth. Crushed from the outside by Mexican armadas and attacked from within by ferocious Comanche tribes – no one was safe. But this was a time of bravery, a time to die for what you believed in and a time to stand tall against the cruel rule of the Mexican General Santa Anna. The heroic General Sam Houston, the rag tag Rangers and the legendary “Yellow Rose of Texas,” lead this story of the human will to win against insurmountable odds. At the end, the Texas flags stood tall and victorious, claiming a piece of history for all eternity.

TEXAS RISING is produced by A+E Studios and ITV Studios America in association with Thinkfactory Media for HISTORY. Leslie Greif (HATFIELDS & MCCOYS) is executive producer.

CAVEMEN – The Blu Review

cavemen4

Review by Sam Moffitt

Charlie Kaufman has a lot to answer for. His multi level style of screen writing now has multiple imitators.  Witness if you will a little film called Cavemen. In the style of Charlie Kaufman’s screen play for Adaptation and other films, we see a young, urban professional named Dean struggle to write a screen play, bounce ideas off some unnamed friends, present his screen play to a way too convincing Hollywood producer (very well played by Jason Patric) and struggle to live through the incidents that will come to make up the screen play we see him write, and that we also see being performed in front of our eyes.

Not quite as engaging as Kaufman’s style Cavemen does have its fun moments, but, well…

cavemen3a

Dean and three of his friends have figured out how to keep the frat boy life style going well after college (if in fact any of these guys went to college.)  They live in a converted warehouse (named The Cave, thus they are the “Cavemen”, and, of course, they also have the required Neanderthal attitudes towards women) and run a combination bar, party house, concert venue and thus do not have to pay rent on their own places.  They live where they work in other words, but that also means they do a lot of drinking and fornicating, and talking about drinking and fornicating, which gets real old, real fast.

Dean’s best female friend who also tends bar at the Cave is Tess, very well played by Camilla Bell, who was excellent in a little thriller called The Quiet in 2005.

And, as you would expect, the main point of the movie is not only Dean’s struggle to get his screen play written and produced but to find True Love amid all the easy sex in the city of LA.  To their credit this crew managed to film LA in a totally different fashion than we are used to, I don’t know where they found these locations but I have never seen LA look this good.

cavemen6

And again, as you would expect, we know that Tess is the right woman for Dean, long before he does.  We see him do all the fun things that speed dating can bring about when you have nothing but time on your hands and no moral compass to speak of.  Dean and his friends go through the roundelays you might see in a French art house movie, just not as well presented.

It takes Dean so long to figure out that he really does love Tess, and so very, very long for him to say it we get tired of this movie way before it’s over.  I lost count of the number of times we see Dean run on foot after a cab that Tess is in so he can pull her out of the cab, and then not say the right thing!

She gets tired of it and so do we.  I hate to slam any movie, especially an independent effort like this, but we have seen this material too many times before and done better.  There’s really not much new here.

cavemen1

Well Go USA’s bluray looks terrific.  The only extras are some trailers for other releases in their catalog, all of which look more interesting than Cavemen.

Cavemen_keyart copy

CAVEMEN is a romantic comedy about how – with a little help from our friends – true love isn’t as evasive as it seems. During a recent press day for the film, I spoke with stars Skylar Astin, Camilla Belle, Chad Michael Murray and director Herschel Faber about filming a love story in LA… and just who has the sweetest dance moves out of the bunch. Cavemen follows LA playboy Dean (Skylar Astin) who is fed up with one-night-stands and empty relationships and realizes that he wants something more out of life than just a party. With a little inspiration from his nine-year-old nephew and his best friend Tess (Camilla Belle), Dean decides to try his hand at finding true love for the first time – which proves to be much more difficult than he thought in modern-day Los Angeles.
