DVD Review: ‘Bedtime Stories’

When I first saw Adam Sandler was beginning to go the way of childrens films over his far greater ‘R’ rated movies, a little tear came to my eye and I had to take a moment to weep. Gone were the days that my favorite adultchild actor would be making shampoo and conditoner fight, fighting imaginary giant penguins and trying to take it to Bob Barker. What I found when I watched ‘Bedtime Stories’ was a suprisingly fun movie that everyone in the family can enjoy, and my daughter has been enjoying multiple times now that we have it on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Adam Sandler plays Skeeter Bronson who was raised in the hotel business and when his dad gets bought out is made the promise of eventually taking over the hotel. Fast forward to 2008 and he is still in the hotel business but not running it, instead the takes up a toolbox and fixes problems around the hotel with very little respect. When his sister has to go out of town he is asked to watch his niece and nephew for a week, and thats where things get crazy. As he is telling them a bedtime story in which the kids take part and make up their own versions that eventually start to come true. Is that pure coincidence or devine intervention? You wont find out in the movie but that doesnt matter, its fun and enjoyable to watch.

Russell Brand, Keri Russell, Guy Pearce(strange role for him), Courney Cox and even Lucy Lawless make up Sandlers supporting cast and everyone does a great job. The incredibly beautiful Keri Russell makes you fall in love with her in every movie and this one is no different!

Definitely go out and buy this one for your kids, its one that they can watch multiple times and still doesnt get old. We got the DVD/Blu-Ray combo which has both versions of the movie in the package as well as a digital copy. The DVD has some great special features which include deleted scenes, outtakes, a special feature on Bugsy, and if you have Blu-Ray Disney BD-Live.

Review: ‘Bedtime Stories’

Jeremy:

A lot of talk this Holiday-movie season has been about how much of a boxing match ‘Frost/Nixon’ is. Â  While the verbal sparring in that film may make for a great main event, there’s another match that makes a barn-burner of an under card bout. Â  It’s found in the film ‘Bedtime Stories’.

In one corner of this cinematic scrap, we have Happy Madison Productions, the Adam Sandler lead company that has made the man a proverbial King Midas where every piece of trash script he touches turns into box office gold. Â  In the other corner, we have Walt Disney Pictures, who, likewise, has a hankering for turning cheap premises into pretty financial wares.

The early moments of the film are pretty much handed to Happy Madison. Â  There’s a lot of Sandler’s typical brand of humor. Â  Sandler, as Skeeter, a hotel handyman whose father built the original hotel that was bought out, mocks the snobbish pretty people who work in the lavish hotel that has been built in the original’s place. Â  Even after the Disney side of the story where Skeeter has to babysit his niece and nephew and the bedtime stories he tells them begin to come true in the real world, the Sandler comedy continues. Â  All of the Happy Madison regulars are here. Â  Allen Covert and Jonathan Loughran make their cameos. Â  Rob Schneider even shows up just enough to get a variation of his “You can do it!” line in there.

In the latter half of the film, though, Walt Disney takes over, and Happy Madison is KOed pretty quickly by visions of red horses, daredevil chariot riders, and giant, snot monsters. Â  There’s even a plump hamster with buggy eyes that becomes the film’s comedic crutch. Â  Whenever there’s a lull in the story, just cut to the hamster, and you’ll get your core audience back in a jiffy.

That core audience is children by and large. Â  While some of the Happy Madison comedy might appeal to some of the more adult demographic, and it’s amazing even to me to consider anything done by Happy Madison as the adult side of a film, this film is for the kids. Â  The children who see this film are going to eat it up, every last fart-joke minute of it.

A lot of the angles the film takes are pretty cringe-worthy for us adults. Â  Some aspects of the film are downright mind-boggling. Â  The relationship Skeeter forms with Jill, a school teacher played by Keri Russell, is one of those confounded relationships that never make sense. Â  Neither of these people would ever fall for the other. Â  The relationship is thrown in here, because we need a love story, right?

Don’t even get me started on Guy Pearce’s appearance. Â  I rarely ever feel sorry for someone being in a film, but I feel sorry for Guy Pearce having to purse his lips and play the villain in ‘Bedtime Stories’.

The kids are sure to love ‘Bedtime Stories’. Â  If they’re at that age where you can drop them off at the theater, feel free to do so. Â  If you’re an Adam Sandler fan, don’t expect his typical antics for too long. Â  If you can’t stand Sandler or the more juvenile Disney flicks, skip this one altogether.

How Successful will Theaters be this Christmas?

This Christmas is definitely going to have an impressive line up of films that come out on one of the busiest days of the year for theaters, but is this year going to be bigger than any before? I mean sure there are always impressive movies that come out on Christmas, but I don’t recall a year with a lineup as good as this years.

First we have the children’s movie ‘Bedtime Stories’ staring Kid’s Choice Award winner Adam Sandler, and having him star in this movie is definitely going to win over a number of kids votes if they make it out to the theaters with their parents. Although the movie looks a little iffy, it will definitely appeal to the younger crowd, and if families have kids that have to tag along on Thursday this is probably what they will be paying to see.

Up next on the list of Christmas openers is ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, which is becoming one of the most talked about movies of the year. For a while the movie looked like it was going to be a bomb, but in the last few months it has definitely become a highly anticipated movie, and is sure to bring in some dough as it is staring the one and only Brad Pitt, who has a pretty successful record when it comes to scoring big in the box office. This movie is sure to hit it big with some of the older crowd who makes it out on Christmas.

‘Marley & Me’ is also opening up on Christmas and you have seen the eight foot cardboard cutout of the cute little puppy in your local theater, you probably caught yourself saying, “Aw, we need to see this!.” Then you went along to read the poster and saw it was staring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, and by then this became a movie you were almost definitely going to see. I can see this one being popular with the lovey-dovey couples who want to spend their Christmas seeing a cute movie about a cute little dog.

‘Valkyrie’ is yet another opening on Christmas, and to me this looks like it’s going to be the flop of the weekend. The movie hasn’t really caught my attention as good but I am sure a lot of people have their different opinions. Tom Cruise does star in the movie which is sure to help, but his name isn’t what it used to be, and it may need more than that to be successful. Who knows, maybe a bunch of veterans will make their way out to the theaters this weekend and check this one out.

Last but not least is ‘The Spirit’ which will probably be the most unappreciated and unnoticed movie this Thursday. The short, action-packed movie will probably attract the attention of middle aged men with good taste who want to see a bad ass movie to heat things up this Christmas. It’s a Frank Miller movie, and I think that is enough said. If I am going to make it out to the theaters, this is what I am going to be seeing.

So that’s what we have this year and it surely doesn’t make decision making very easy. Cute dogs, Adam Sandler, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and a Frank Miller movie, all opening on Christmas. This doesn’t include what opened last weekend, ‘Yes Man’, ‘Seven Pounds’ and ‘The Tale of Despereaux’ which will still get some attention from people who like Jim Carrey or Will Smith, and seriously, who doesn’t like either of them? And I am sure, or at least hope, that more and more people will go and see what the fuss is all about with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ if it’s availible in more theaters.

So what will you be seeing this Christmas? Do you normally see a movie during the holidays, and if not, will you this year? Comment below and let us know!
