LIVE AT MISTER KELLY’S – Review

View of Mister Kelly’s marquee featuring Joan Rivers and Adam Wade, Chicago, Illinois, circa 1968.

In the 21st century, it seems that a near-unlimited supply of entertainment is at our fingertips, or at least at the click of a mouse. That flow seems constant with a staggering variety of options. But what did folks do around 75 years ago? Sure, radio was still dominant, though this new “gizmo” called television was making inroads. And of, course the movies were there. As for live entertainment, many performers played at regional venues like state fairs and auditoriums. If you were looking for something more intimate, the big cities had nightclubs. And in between meccas like LA (with Ciro’s and Slapsy Maxie’s) and NYC (with the “Copa” and the Latin Quarter), there was the “Windy City”. When the vaudeville and burlesque venues began to shutter, lots of big-name talents, in music and comedy, could be seen at the bustling “classy joint” near Rush and Oak. But for those who couldn’t get there, they still enjoyed the feel of the place when those artists committed their routines and songs to vinyl, which they proudly proclaimed in the liner notes, and often on the cover, was recorded LIVE AT MISTER KELLY’S.

The story of that club actually begins a few years earlier with another club. And this empire, which would include a later entertainment spot, was established by two brothers, the Marienthals, Oscar and George. At the end of WWII, the men decided to provide an upscale eatery in the heart of Chicago, the London House, formerly the Fort Dearborn Grill. Inspired by the wartime meat rationing, they struck a “hungry” chord with their catchphrase “Make a date with a steak”.Eventually, they would offer the best of jazz music with the meals in 1955. Ah, but two years before that they opened Mister Kelly’s (named after the previous owner’s doorman/manager, who didn’t remain), which would have their own “house band” the following year. In 1959, the owners instituted a new policy of combining a comedy act and a musician (singer, band, etc.) on the same bill usually lasting a couple of days. Though the stage was tiny and the space limited, Kelly’s attracted the hottest acts of the early 1960s. For comedy, the audiences were laughing with Bob Newhart, Nichols & May, Mort Sahl, and Lenny Bruce. Plus they “tapped their toes’ to Laine Kazan, Peggy Lee, and a rising star that Oscar lured away from the “Big Apple”, Barbra Streisand. One of the most radical decisions by the brothers was their hiring of black entertainers with no segregation on stage or in the audience as Della Reese, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughn packed the place along with Richard Pryor, Dick Gregory, and Flip Wilson (who recorded an album there). When audiences became interested in the more “radical comics” and zany improv groups, another venue The Happy Medium (which would prove a springboard for the comedy team of Stiller & Meara) opened its doors around the corner. Despite a couple of devastating house fires, Kelly’s remained a hot spot (oops, sorry) well into the 1970s. But by then the rising comic stars and many music acts, filled the late-night TV talk shows and they upped their fees, pricing out the smaller nightclubs for the big theatres and arenas. Before the end of 1975, Mr. Kelly’s was shuttered and, along with the London House and the Medium, became part of Windy City history.

Ah, but what a slice of lively and fun history (I didn’t want to end the last paragraph on a sad note). Considering that no film footage of the interior of the club exists, director Ted Bogosian has somehow found a way for us to feel as though we have a stage-side seat (and it was just 4 or 5 feet away from the action) to enjoy an incredible gathering of the world’s most iconic performers. Luckily there are lots of archival photos of the club’s exterior and interior along with countless ads and promotional materials. Big kudos to co-producer and editor Scott Dummier for assembling all of this art and for the massive amount of interviews. Some were a bit …challenging (Streisand gives only an audio recollection), others are archival, as we hear from many who are now workin’ the “main stage in the clouds”. We encounter Shelly Berman, Fred Willard, and Jerry Stiller ( he hints that a current comedy superstar was conceived during his Medium gig). But happily many are still here and very happy to look back, including Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin, Dick Gregory, Shecky Greene, and Dick Smothers (hey, I still have the LP he and brother Tom recorded there). Speaking of the archives, we view bits of local TV news segments, Bill Murray on the Tonight Show, and the closest TV show to being at Kelly’s, “Playboy After Dark”, right from “Hef’s swingin’ pad”. Oh, and the jazz greats certainly get their due, in some great music excerpts. Aside from the Marienthal family members and the relatives of late stars (Kitty Bruce), there are some very witty stories from playwright David Mamet, who worked a variety of jobs, and even “tickles the ivories”. Most informative is an entertainment historian who scoops up dozens of albums recorded at Kelly’s at a massive used record store (Kelly’s has its own section), along with a radio DJ/show host. I guess the closest we have to this place is Vegas, though their big showrooms have none of the amazing intimacy. Until “Doc Brown” gets the “bugs’ worked out we can’t take a sixty-year jaunt back in time to catch Ella and Lenny, but the engrossing and highly entertaining feature documentary LIVE AT MISTER KELLY’S is pretty darn close. Now I’m itching for one of their big juicy steaks along with a fresh Green Goddess salad! Tasty!

“Hello, Gorgeous!” Barbra Streisand in FUNNY GIRL at The Tivoli Next Monday!

” I’m a bagel on a plate full of onion rolls!”

FUNNY GIRL comes to life on the big screen Monday July 29th as part of the ‘Classics on the Loop’ series. Showtimes are 4pm and 7pm. Admission is $7.A Facebook invite can be found HERE

Few film debuts in the 1960s were more auspicious than that of Barbra Streisand in FUNNY GIRL. Already a legit and recording star, she shot to superstardom and nabbed an Oscar for best actress in the bargain. Ms Babs had played musical-comedy star Fanny Brice on Broadway and had the role down pat by the time director William Wyler brought the story to the screen. In the early 1900s in New York City, young Fanny, an ugly duckling with an unstoppable ambition to be a star, is determined to get out of the Lower East Side. Her big break comes when she’s spotted by handsome gambler Nicky Arnstein (Omar Sharif), who helps her catch the eye of Florenz Ziegfeld

The memorable Broadway score was augmented for the screen with several tunes from Brice’s life, including her signature, “My Man.”

The ‘Classics on the Loop’ will continue at The Tivoli:

I first went to see director Peter Bogdanovich’s WHAT’S UP DOC? with my parents when I was 10 years old at the Esquire Theater (right around the corner from the Hi-Pointe!) back in ’72. We as a family had an uproariously good time (at least I think we did – that was a long time ago). Ryan O’Neal, as the poker-faced, straight-laced, hen-pecked, scholarly authority on rocks and musicality plays Howard Bannister, the perfect straight man to Barbra Streisand’s wandering, wise-cracking, lustful, but solidly grounded Judy Maxwell, the Daddy’s Little Girl with the voice of an angel. Madeline Kahn plays the overbearing fiancee whose obsessive organizational skills explain why even Howard is so irresistibly taken with Judy. These three characters — and the four identical suitcases that set them on the wackiest adventure of their lives — make for one of the funniest screwball comedies of the ‘70s. Be sure to listen, in one of the best scenes of the film early on, to the taxi driver who chants after O’Neal: “Yes, Eunice.” It’s pure gold. Do yourself a favor and head over to the Hi-Pointe Saturday morning.

TCM Film Fest Begins Thursday With Barbra Streisand’s FUNNY GIRL

funnygirl

Tinseltown is ready to greet film fans from around the world again for the 2013 TCM Classic Film Festival.

Beginning this Thursday, April 25 and running through Sunday, April 28 in Hollywood, the festival will open with a gala presentation of the newly restored musical classic Funny Girl (1968).

Over four big days, TCM will welcome legendary stars, award-winning filmmakers and classic movie fans for the cinematic celebration, which this year will center on the theme Cinematic Journeys: Travel in the Movies.

But first on the schedule is FUNNY GIRL!

Legendary superstar Barbra Streisand demonstrates why she’s the greatest star in her Academy Award winning role (Best Actress, 1968) as “Fanny Brice” in the celebrated musical biography FUNNY GIRL. Commemorating its 45th anniversary, the classic film was meticulously restored from the original negative by Sony Pictures Entertainment in 4K at Sony Pictures’ Colorworks.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release FUNNY GIRL for the first time on Blu-ray April 30th, exclusively available at AmazonThe Blu-ray will feature two previously released vintage featurettes: “Barbra in Movieland,” a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film; and “This is Streisand,” chronicling the early years of the performer’s career.

Approved_Unit_011575437832_3889E6B8

One of the most popular movie musicals ever made, FUNNY GIRL follows the early career of stage comedienne Fanny Brice, a role that earned Barbra Streisand the 1968 Oscar® for Best Actress. Only her mother believes Fanny can make it in show business, but when she gets her first break at Keeney’s Music Hall, her hilarious debut gets her hired as a comedienne. Fanny becomes a star, falls in love and marries Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif), a handsome gambler. The film’s many memorable songs include “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and the Streisand classic “People.”

FUNNY GIRL, which earned more than $52 million at the box office, was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, a Best Supporting Actress nod for Kay Medford, Jule Styne (music) and Bob Merrill (lyrics) for Best Original Song for “Funny Girl,” and Best Score for Walter Scharf, with Barbra Streisand taking home the statuette for Best Actress. The score consists of classic standards, including “My Man,” “Second Hand Rose” and “I’d Rather Be Blue Over You (Than Happy With Somebody Else)” to tunes that have become standards, including “People,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” and “I’m the Greatest Star.” In 2005, the Streisand’s immortal opening line, “Hello Gorgeous,” was named #81 on the American Film Institute list, “AFI’s 100 Years … 100 Movie Quotes” and the film itself ranked #16 on “AFI’s Greatest Movie Musicals” list.

THE GUILT TRIP has been rated PG-13 for language and some risqué material

This holiday season, Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) is about to embark on the mother of all road trips . . . when he is guilted into bringing his mom, Joyce (Barbra Streisand), along for the ride on a cross-country adventure that careens through comical curves on the way to a surprising connection.

Across 3,000 miles and 8 days of shifting American landscape, Andy will be flummoxed, freaked out, analyzed, annoyed and lured into one anxiety-cranking situation after another by the woman who knows him — or rather, nudges him — better than anyone. But the farther they go, the closer he gets to realizing he has more in common with mom than he ever imagined. And now, as they approach Andy’s dreamed-of destination, it turns out that a little unsolicited mother’s advice might be just what a down-and-out guy most needs to turn his life around.

The hilarious twists, sudden turns and emotionally bumpy terrain of an epic mother-son journey are brought to life in The Guilt Trip by the one of the most unlikely pairings in recent movie history: the affably charming star of hit teen buddy comedies, Seth Rogen (50/50, Knocked Up, Superbad, Pineapple Express), united with the legendary actress, artist, filmmaker and Academy Award® winner Barbra Streisand.

As Andy Brewster, Rogen plays a struggling young inventor searching for a lucky break. As his mother Joyce, Streisand is a pesky parent and vibrant widow ready to unravel her lonely lifestyle. But when they come together in the front seat of a sub-compact, with years of family habits and secrets between them, it shakes up both their lives. Director Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, 27 Dresses) turns one of life’s most awkward situations – unthinkably close quarters with a parent — into a series of funny, relatable, and poignant moments that anyone who ever tangled with family bonds will recognize.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions present a Michaels/Goldwyn production of an Anne Fletcher film, The Guilt Trip. The film is written by Dan Fogelman (Crazy Stupid Love) and produced by Lorne Michaels & John Goldwyn and Evan Goldberg. Glauberman (Young Adult) and Priscilla Nedd-Friednly (The Proposal) and music by Christophe Beck (Crazy, Stupid Love, The Hangover).

Ms. Streisand has two films coming down the pike. She’s directing and producing SKINNY AND CAT starring Cate Blanchett and Colin Firth. The story of American photographer Margaret Bourke-White’s marriage to novelist Erskine Caldwell in the late 1930s begins production in January 2013. Streisand will return behind the camera for the first time in sixteen years.

Babs other film, GYPSY, is based on the Broadway hit about the life and times of burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee and her aggressive stage mother, Mama Rose. Streisand will star as Rose Hovick and also produce the musical alongside Joel Silver (THE MATRIX). Read my thoughts on when the film was first announced in January 2011 HERE. There’s still no word yet on who will direct.
