DreamWorks’ PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR – The Review

THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR

DreamWorks’ PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR will leave kids in stitches… while older audience members are left bored, with few laughs.

The penguins of Madagascar are back with an all new adventure. Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, along with a new group of elite operatives group called The North Wind, are on a mission,  to save the penguins of the world after the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine sets his plan of destruction into motion. A world without penguins? Oh, my!

The ‘Penguins of Madagascar’ television series seems to go over rather well, and the film does too… for children. There are funny puns that will make audiences chuckle, but for the most part I was left spiritless. Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Conrad Vernon and Christopher Knights really do work together well, and are humorous to watch (listen to) as the penguins. It would have been very easy for the studio to bump them for A-list names, but instead they went with strong voice talent. That, in my book, is terrific. There are incredible voice actors out there that are being bumped for big-screen actors… and all they do is speak how they normally speak. The craft is lost a bit. Having said that, it was fun to hear Ken Jeongas a baby seal named Short Fuse. Of course, all of the headlines list Benedict Cumberbatch (Classified) in their headlines. He was good. He didn’t impress me as much as the voices of the penguins, or John Malkovich as Dr. Octavius Brine / Dave. He brought depth to the character. He is an actor that should play with more voice work. Just sayin’.

THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR

This story was dull. Not the revenge plot. This was actually funny to me. I loved seeing the penguins interact with Dr. Octavius Brine / Dave. The whole ‘North Wind’ group threw me off. They didn’t give me enough backstory or character history to remotely care about them. They did nothing to really assist the story. They felt like time fillers. On top of that, I feel like the animation of Classified was second rate compared to the penguins. Certain parts of the film felt rushed (on the visual side). If they would have just stuck to the penguins / Dr. Octavius revenge plot it would have been much more enjoyable.

Aside from a few good puns, this film was not for me. It’s not for adults. This is a children’s movie. The kids in my screening were laughing hysterically. The adults… not so much.

Skipper, Kowalski, Rico & Private Star In New THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR Trailer

THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR

Featuring the voices of Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Christopher Knights, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Jeong, Annet Mahendru, Peter Stormare and John Malkovich, here’s your first look at the brand new and funny trailer for 20th Century Fox’s and DreamWorks Animation’s THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR.

Super spy teams aren’t born…they’re hatched. Discover the secrets of the greatest and most hilarious covert birds in the global espionage biz: Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private.

These elitists of the elite are joining forces with a chic undercover organization, The North Wind.

Here’s a rundown of the team:

AGENT CLASSIFIED (Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch)

First of all, his name is actually classified, and not “Classified.”  The leader of the North Wind — a spy agency that helps animals in need – he’s a highly-trained but cocky secret agent who underestimates the Penguins’ operation.

SHORT FUSE (Voiced by Ken Jeong)

Short Fuse may look like a plush toy but he’s a force to be reckoned with. An explosives expert for North Wind, Short Fuse lives up to his name through his touchy temper, but he keeps it in check around his idol, Classified.

EVA (Voiced by Annet Mahendru)

Don’t let the seductive Russian accent fool you; Eva is far more than just a pretty face. As an intelligence analyst for North Wind, she’s a thrill-seeking, brainy beauty with a killer instinct.

CORPORAL (Voiced by Peter Stormare)

Measuring 8 feet tall and armored in 1,000 pounds of muscle, this Norwegian bear’s brawn masks a soft spot for all things cute, especially our four Penguins.

Together, they must stop the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine, voiced by John Malkovich, from destroying the world as we know it.

THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR

For those who may need a refresher course on the Penguins:

SKIPPER (Voiced by Tom McGrath)

The team’s fearless leader and keeper of the penguin code, Skipper demands loyalty, obedience and order from his regimented flock. Skipper asks nothing of his men that he won’t do himself.

KOWALSKI (Voiced by Chris Miller)

Kowalski is the brains of the operation. Possessing a photographic memory and a mechanical engineer’s gift for problem solving, he’s the go-to guy when the penguins need a quick, life-saving fix.

RICO

Rico lives to blow things up.  When he’s kept on a tight leash, Rico is an effective weapon but left to his own devices, he’s a loose cannon… in more ways than one.

PRIVATE (Voiced by Christopher Knights)

Though he’s the runt of the rook, Private has the biggest heart of them all.  He’s always up for new challenges, but because the group still sees Private as the “baby,” he’s often sidelined during their missions.

THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR hits theaters everywhere on November 26, 2014 in 3D.
