Win A Signed Poster From ANNABELLE: CREATION

ANNABELLE: CREATION is one of 2017’s scariest films!

Variety reports: “Annabelle: Creation,” which conjured $35 million in its opening to dominate an otherwise lackluster frame last weekend, will wind up the weekend with about $64 million in its first 10 days. The film is the fourth in New Line’s highly profitable “Conjuring” universe and should see the combined worldwide grosses hit the $1 billion mark this weekend, thanks to 2013’s “The Conjuring,” 2014’s “Annabelle,” 2016’s “The Conjuring 2,” and “Annabelle: Creation.” Next up is “The Nun,” starring Taissa Farmiga and Demian Bichir and due out July 13.

In his review, Michael Haffner says “it proudly stands next to THE CONJURING films as delivering real scares. What helps with this is making the audience afraid of not just the doll, but of what other being is haunting the house as well as the always hidden mother. It’s a terrifying trifecta that fits perfectly into the ominous surroundings.”

From New Line Cinema comes “Annabelle: Creation,” with David F. Sandberg (“Lights Out”) helming the follow up to 2014’s hugely successful “Annabelle,” which scared up nearly $257 million at the worldwide box office during its run in theaters. The new film is once again being produced by Peter Safran and James Wan, who previously partnered on “The Conjuring” hit movies.

In “Annabelle: Creation,” several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a doll maker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home. They soon become the target of the doll maker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.

Sandberg directs from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote “Annabelle.” The film stars Stephanie Sigman (“Spectre”), Talitha Bateman (“The 5th Wave”), Lulu Wilson (“Ouija 2,” “Deliver Us from Evil”), Philippa Coulthard (“After the Dark”), Grace Fulton (“Badland”), Lou Lou Safran (“The Choice”), Samara Lee (“Foxcatcher,” “The Last Witch Hunter”), and Tayler Buck in her feature film debut, with Anthony LaPaglia (TV’s “Without a Trace”) and Miranda Otto (Showtime’s “Homeland,” “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy).

ANNABELLE: CREATION – Review

One of Andrew Wyeth’s most famous paintings is “Christina’s World.” It depicts a woman immobilized, lying on a grassy hill, reaching out towards a farmhouse that sits isolated in the distance. There was a young girl in Wyeth’s town who suffered from Polio, which forced her to crawl about. Emotions of loneliness, desperation, and fear are expressed even though the subject’s face is turned away from the viewer. This famous painting that has now traveled the world in exhibitions and as a postage stamp served as inspiration for Tobe Hooper’s 1974 cinematic masterpiece, THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE.

Director David F. Sandberg (last year’s LIGHTS OUT) seems to have also been influenced by this striking and haunting painting. ANNABELLE: CREATION feels like a southern-gothic folktale, not unlike PUMPKINHEAD. And like the aforementioned painting, the main lead girl also suffers from Polio, causing her to walk slowly in a leg brace. She’s one of several young women that a doll maker and his wife take in after the closing of an orphanage. Played with quiet strength by Talitha Bateman, Janice falls prey to a dark presence which leads her to discover an old doll hidden away in a locked bedroom upstairs.

While screenwriter Gary Dauberman, unfortunately, leaves the majority of the cast to simply blow away into the dusty distance, Sandberg focuses his attention on delivering what younger audiences have mainly come to experience: scares. In that regard, ANNABELLE: CREATION is extremely effective. Unlike its predecessor, it proudly stands next to THE CONJURING films as delivering real scares. What helps with this is making the audience afraid of not just the doll, but of what other being is haunting the house as well as the always hidden mother. It’s a terrifying trifecta that fits perfectly into the ominous surroundings.

Previously executed in James Wan’s INSIDIOUS and CONJURING films, Sandberg relies heavily on presenting children’s games and toys in a dark light. Everything from a dollhouse to a toy pop-gun is used in ways to subvert their innocence. Even his twisted take on a seemingly innocent song played on a record player is somewhat reminiscent of a similar take on a classic song in INSIDIOUS. That being said, I don’t fault Sandberg for learning from what has previously worked well. He shows a knack for creating tension, and like those previous films, the scares are structured as patiently staged set pieces as opposed to quick jump scares.

Art always spawns other art. As Harry S. Truman once stated, “There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know.” Sandberg proves that he’s certainly not ignorant to the world of horror cinema, while also showing how to properly take inspiration from some of the masters of the genre.

Listen To The Music From Benjamin Wallfisch’s ANNABELLE: CREATION

New Line Cinema’s Annabelle: Creation —the follow up to 2014’s hugely successful film Annabelle —will arrive in theatres on August 11, 2017.

WaterTower Music has released the soundtrack from the film, which you can order here.

Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Benjamin Wallfisch (upcoming ITA Cure For WellnessLights Out) is recognized as one of the leading film composers of his generation. His masterfully unnerving 24-track Annabelle: Creation film score offers a potent dimension of eeriness that magnifies the suspenseful discomfort when set against picture.

Read our interview with composer from March 2017 here.

“It’s always a joy to collaborate with David F. Sandberg; not only is he of course a master filmmaker, but he’s also a great musician,” says Wallfisch about the Annabelle: Creation director. “His deep understanding of what a score can bring to the table in such a finely nuanced, beautifully crafted piece of cinema as Annabelle: Creation, gave me a lot of freedom to think outside the box.

“Our only rule was everything in the score had to be acoustic; as the drama is set in the 1950s, everything needed to feel authentic to the time,” Wallfisch further explained. “As a supplement to the large orchestra we used on the score, we utilized a whole bunch of dusty toy instruments from the 1950s, with one in particular appearing more than any other – a seemingly innocent sounding Jaymar toy piano. Just the kind of instrument you might catch Annabelle herself playing…”

Annabelle doll

For all our British readers.

The possessed doll Annabelle, known from The Conjuring universe, arrived in London on July 20, accompanied by actress Emilia Sofia Varslauskaite, 12.  The creepy pair were seen travelling towards Stratford, where they are to star in a terrifying new Annabelle Creation horror experience.

Warner Bros Pictures and New Line Cinema invite you to brave the ultimate scare challenge of babysitting Annabelle, the demonic doll from James Wan’s The Conjuring universe, later this month.

The immersive horror experience, conjured up by some of the creative team behind David Copperfield and featuring actual props from the hotly anticipated new film Annabelle: Creation, opening in cinemas across the U.K. on 11th August, will combine magic effects, directional sound and immersive theatre to give visitors the fright of their lives. It has been brought to life in close consultation with the filmmakers, including director David F. Sandberg.

Taking place in a creepy, purpose-built Victorian mansion on the site of the Town Hall in Stratford, Annabelle’s House promises to give guests the most nail-biting twenty minutes of their lives using fright techniques prepared especially for this challenge.

Participants will initially be asked to babysit a seemingly innocent eleven-year-old girl whilst exploring the set, which is filled with genuine props from Annabelle: Creation. But it won’t be long before the long-dormant demon inside the Annabelle doll, an unholy force intent on stealing human souls, comes to life and possesses the entire house. Additional frights are being kept under wraps for this unrivalled scare experience.

Annabelle’s House will open its doors to the public in East London for a limited time from 27th July following journalist and celebrity previews. It marks the release of Annabelle: Creation, a new chapter in the Conjuring universe, which lands at UK screens on 11th August.

Thrill seekers can now apply for tickets at https://www.warnerbros.co.uk/whats-hot/articles/2017/july/annabelle-creation-immersive-horror-competition  or visit www.facebook.com/annabellefilmuk
