ANCHORMAN ‘Movies on Art Hill’ Series Continues in St. Louis July 19th

The ‘Movies on Art Hill’ Series in St. Louis continues this Friday, July 19th with ANCHORMAN. Admission is FREE and the movie will start about 9pm. A Facebook invite for the event can be found HERE

Celebrate 10 years of films, food, and fun with your dream team this summer at the Art Hill Film Series! Everyone knows that Art Hill, in front of the St. Louis Art Museum, is a great place to go sledding in the winter. But did you know it’s a great place to see movies in the summer?

The We Are Movie Geeks gang always goes to these, so if you wanna hang with the cool kids, you should go too. It’s free and they set up a big screen at the bottom of the hill. There are food trucks and beer and wine for sale. You can even go dine in the museum’s restaurant before the show if you got money to burn. If you’re a museum member, you can show your membership card and get free popcorn and ice cream (I did that last year even though my card was expired!). Of course, you can bring a cooler with your own food and drinks as well. It’s a lot of fun! Bring your dog! The movies start at 9 but get there early! Thousands of people show up, especially if the weather is nice, and close parking is scarce. There’s live pre-show music and the people-watching can be entertaining.

What’s a film series without the food?

Bring your own picnic.
Food Truck Fest, presented by Sauce Magazine, will run from 6 to 8:30 pm in the parking lot to the west of the Louis IX statue on Art Hill. Food trucks vary each week and lines will close at 8:30 pm sharp each night. Cash, credit, and debit cards accepted. An ATM will be on Art Hill Plaza.
The Museum’s Cafe will be open and serving casual fare including freshly prepared soups, sandwiches, and salads until 9 pm.
Concession stands with snacks and soda will be located at the top of Art Hill. Show your Saint Louis Art Museum membership card and get a free bag of popcorn!
Adult beverages will be available for purchase at the Panorama booth.

Bring your appetite! Before the movie starts, make sure to tap into your creative side. Each week, there will be an Art Lab for adults complete with an instructor and all the materials you need to create your own Film Series masterpiece.

In ANCHORMAN Hotshot television anchorman Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) welcomes upstart reporter Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) into the male-dominated world of 1970s broadcast news — that is, until the talented Corningstone begins to outshine Burgundy on air. Soon he grows jealous, begins a bitter feud with Veronica and eventually makes a vulgar slip on live TV that ruins his career. However, when an outrageous story breaks at the San Diego Zoo, Ron may get a chance to redeem himself.

The Top 21 Movies of the 21st Century……So Far!

It’s one thing to come up with a list of the best movies in any given year, but the best movies of a century that’s just in its 16^th year? We Are Movie Geeks polled a group of 30 carefully-selected (and mostly St. Louis-based) movie critics, movie bloggers, movie academics, movie promoters, and just plain old movie fans and asked for a list, in order of preference, of their Top Ten Favorite Films so far this century. Somewhere among the endless superhero blockbusters, franchise reboots, and sequels, some really great movies have come out in the last 16 years. And some of them were indeed superhero blockbusters, franchise reboots, and sequels! The 21^st century has another 84 years to go, and there’s no doubt that these choices will change as the years go by, but since it’s doubtful any of those polled will be around when the century ends (unless Stephen Tronicek – born in 1999 – makes it to 101), we might as well do this now. To come up with our top 21, a super-scientific algorithm was generated….just kidding! We simply scored each movie based on its rank in any given list. If a movie was #1 on any list, it received 10 points, #2 received 9 points, and so on (a movie ranked #10 received 1 point – get it?). Of course, all of these lists are highly subjective and some favorite titles will be omitted, so prepare to argue with the selections of these 30 film buffs (and yes, we’re naming names!).

Get ready for more Ron Burgundy goodness. Funnyman Will Ferrell announced tonight the return of San Diego’s favorite Anchorman on Conan O’Brien. Paramount Pictures’ sequel to 2004’s hit ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY is a go.

“As of 0:900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel to ANCHORMAN,” he said. “It is official! There will be a sequel to ANCHORMAN. There will be a sequel.”

So raise your glasses – more Scotchy, scotch, scotch all around.

Your Weekly Source for the Newest Releases to Blu-Ray

What could be better than a young Nicole Kidman in classics 80’s era flickdom? Well, lots… but, we’re talking apples and oranges here. BMX BANDITS is only one of the schlocky titles to go Blu this week, the other is Roger Corman’s SHARKTOPUS, a modern schlockterpiece that was spawned from the recent giant mutant killer animal revival on DVD and the SyFy Channel. If you sit on the serious/schlock fence, perhaps you’ll appreciate the emergence of the HARRY POTTER franchise finally conjuring itself onto Blu. If your tastes are a bit more refined, I would suggest one of Criterion’s new Blu titles: Louis Malle’s AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS — set during WWII, about a French boarding school run by priests and a friendship that could risk the entire school’s safety; or, Edward Yang’s YI YI — a story about a family and their efforts to understand the meaning of life. Finally, I highly recomend the recently released 2010 Academy Award-winning THE FIGHTER starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg as the real-life boxing brothers Dickey and Micky Ward.

Guess what guys? Will Ferrell has a new movie coming out, he and Mark Wahlberg will be here in St. Louis to walk the Red Carpet on Thursday evening and let me tell you… we here at Movie Geeks are STOKED! So, to share our excitement, here is a list of our Top 10 Will Ferrell Moments, on the big screen!

Honorable Mention: Jay and silent Bob Strike Back -“F*ckin Beans! That was them, wasn’t it?”

I don’t know what could be said about this one, other than Will Ferrell was cool enough to be included in a Kevin Smith film… Done!

10. Kicking and Screaming: The Coffee Shop Scene

We’ve all been there. We’re in a long line, waiting for coffee, or to check out at the store, or even at the movies. Then, some jerk that thinks that he owns the place walks in front of you, or starts complaining into your ear. Well, in this case it’s Will Ferrell… and he is here to point out to you just how ridiculous that guy really looks. If you think he is sane, then congratulations! You are that guy! Enjoy!

09. Step Brothers: Job Interview

Mmmm…just putting it out there, but when going on a job interview, wearing a tuxedo, bringing your stepbrother, and failing to recognize a future employer’s first name might not be the best path to getting a job. In this clip from STEP BROTHERS, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly think otherwise.

08. Starsky and Hutch: Prison Dragon Posing

Will Ferrell almost steals this 2004 big screen adaptation of the classic 70’s buddy cop TV show in an uncredited cameo as the incarcerated employee of Vince Vaughn’s Reese Feldman, Big Earl. But he’s not your average thug. Big Earl has an artistic soul. Before he’ll give up any information to Ben Stiller’s Starsky and Owen Wilson’s Hutch, they must pose for him and emulate his favorite fantasy creatures. It’s an unexpected treat in one of the better comedy TV movie remakes.

07. Old School: Wedding Scene

All I can say is that this is either any couple getting married biggest nightmare are most awesome moment caught on film. Can you imagine having a band with such INTENSITY play at your wedding? I just love Frank’s look over to the band when he realizes what they are saying!

06. Talladega Nights: Ricky Believes He Is On Fire!

In the NASCAR-sanctioned Will Ferrell yuk-fest TALLADEGA NIGHTS THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY, Ferrell’s “big hairy American winning machine” loses his nerve after imagining he’s caught fire and has to get his life back together…Shake and bake!

05. Wedding Crashers: Meatloaf!

Will scores again in another uncredited cameo with Owen Wilson(again) as the legendary ladies man, Chazz Reinhold in this 2005 comedy gem. A dejected John Beckwirth decides that the only way to escape his downward spiral is to visit the home of his swinger guru. There Chazz attempts to be a gracious host by sharing a home cooked delicacy prepared by his mother. Later he tells John of an even lower new way to score with the ladies. Chazz Reinhold had been mentioned several times earlier in the film and the appearance near the end by Mr. Ferrell is comedy gold.

04. Anchorman: Fight Scene

Knock-down, drag-out brawls are always standard fare between rival local news stations. And don’t let anyone try to tell you otherwise. In this “Battle Scene” from ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY, this is how dominance of being #1 at 6 and 10pm is really decided. Even Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Tim Robbins and Ben Stiller show up for a good ratings fight.

03. Elf: Santa Announcement

“Santa! Oh My God! Santa’s Coming!! I Know Him! I Know Him!”…As Buddy the Elf, Will Ferrell plays a happy idiot with heroic intensity. Buddy is as uncontainable as a child, especially when he hears Santa is coming. He knows him!

02. Talladega Nights: Prayer To Sweet Baby Jesus

If I had a nickle for every time that I heard someone quote this scene (usually while they are drinking), I would have quite the wad-o-cash! Ricky Bobby knows that Jesus grew up to be a man… but he likes his Jesus in baby form, like Christmas Jesus. Maybe you like your Jesus in a little tuxedo. To each their own… Jesus!
