Check out the first official US trailer for director Alex Garland’s EX MACHINA, starring Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, and Alicia Vikander.

The Guardian‘s Mark Kermode writes, “Alex Garland’s directorial debut is full of confidence and wit, with Alicia Vikander blurring the lines between human and machine.”

Alex Garland, writer of 28 DAYS LATER and SUNSHINE, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, EX MACHINA. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac).

Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test – charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence.

That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated – and more deceptive – than the two men could have imagined.

A24 will release EX MACHINA in theaters on April 10.

EX MACHINA will have its North American Premiere out of the SXSW Festival on Saturday, March 14th.

Meet Ava In New EX MACHINA Poster; A24 Will Debut First U.S. Trailer On Tuesday

ExMachina_Payoff_hires2

Wired UK says EX MACHINA “is easily the best on screen depiction of AI – its promises, challenges, and its philosophical implications – in years.”

The Telegraph UK calls Alex Garland’s film “a bewitchingly smart science fiction film of a type that’s all too rare.”

The Guardian writes, “Alicia Vikander’s note-perfect depiction of ever-so-slightly unnatural movement (think of Yul Brynner’s walk in Westworld dialled down by about 99%) triggering unsettling responses. Blending balletic physical performance with Double Negative’s excellently rendered computer graphics, Vikander’s Ava beautifully blurs the line between “mecha” and “orga” (in the lexicon of Spielberg’s AI), inflecting the most natural gestures – a tilt of the head, a roll of the wrist, a flicker of a smile – with a hint of artifice, subtly accentuated by a whispered symphony of gyroscopic noise.”

What happens if Ava fails your test? Find out tomorrow at Noon EST when A24 debuts the new trailer.

Mark Romanek Begins Filming of ‘Never Let Me Go’

mark-romanek

Director Mark Romanek has not had a feature film released since ‘One Hour Photo’ back in 2002.   The director of such visionary music videos as Michael Jackson’s Scream, Madonna’s Bedtime Stories, and Nine Inch Nails’ Perfect Drug, Romanek was believed to be the “next big thing” after ‘One Hour Photo’ released to rave reviews.

Now, seven years later, Romanek has begun filming his next film.   ‘Never Let Me Go’ stars Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Charlotte Rampling, Sally Hawkins, Nathalie Richard and Andrea Riseborough and is written by Danny Boyle-go-to-guy Alex Garland (’28 Days Later’ and ‘Sunshine’).

“We are delighted to be shooting this special project, which Alex Garland first brought to us before the book’s publication in 2005,” said Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA Films. “We could not be happier to have assembled such a remarkable cast and crew for this extraordinary story.”

The film tells the coming-of-age story of three English children and the growing up they encounter at a boarding school.   It is based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro.

“From the moment I finished the novel, it became my dream to film it. Ishiguro’s conception is so daring — so eerie and beautiful. Alex Garland’s adaptation is sensitive and precise. The cast is perfect. The crew, superb. I am deeply grateful to be working with DNA Films, Film4, and my friends at Fox Searchlight on this exceptional project,” said Romanek.

‘Never Let Me Go’ has a nine-week shooting schedule in the UK.   It is set for release some time next year.

Keira Knightley to Star in Mark Romanek Thriller

keira-knightley

I don’t know which news is more important here, the fact that Keira Knightley has signed on to star in the new thriller from Mark Romanek or the mere fact that Romanek is directing a new film. Â  The director of ‘One Hour Photo’ was attached to helm the new ‘Wolf Man’ film, but left due to budget disagreements. Â  Now, he and Knightley are teaming up to make ‘Never Let Me Go’, a sci-fi thriller for Fox Searchlight.

The story revolves around  a trio who grew up in a boarding school with no contact or knowledge of the outside world until they discover they are clones grown for the sole purpose of organ donation.

Alex Garland (’28 Days Later…’ and ‘Sunshine’) wrote the screenplay, and, other than that, the story doesn’t sound interesting at all. Â  It sounds way too much like ‘The Island’, but, with Garland behind the screenplay and Romanek behind the camera, I’m sure the film will have its fair share of surprises.

The film begins production in April in England.
