The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Wednesday (October 25) to present a Special Award – an Oscar® statuette – to director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s virtual reality installation, “CARNE y ARENA (Virtually Present, Physically Invisible),” in recognition of a visionary and powerful experience in storytelling.

“The Governors of the Academy are proud to present a special Oscar to ‘CARNE y ARENA,’ in which Alejandro Iñárritu and his cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki have opened for us new doors of cinematic perception,” said Academy President John Bailey. “‘CARNE y ARENA,’ Iñárritu’s multimedia art and cinema experience, is a deeply emotional and physically immersive venture into the world of migrants crossing the desert of the American southwest in early dawn light. More than even a creative breakthrough in the still emerging form of virtual reality, it viscerally connects us to the hot-button political and social realities of the U.S.-Mexico border.”

CARNE y ARENA,” currently on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Fondazione Prada in Milan, and Tlatelolco Cultural Center in Mexico City, is a collaboration between Iñárritu, Lubezki, producer Mary Parent, Legendary Entertainment, Fondazione Prada, ILMxLAB, and Emerson Collective. Katie Calhoon executive produced.

In recognition of this achievement, an Oscar will be presented to “CARNE y ARENA” at the Academy’s 9th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 11, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center

THE REVENANT – The Review

the-revenant-image-leonardo-dicaprio

Acclaimed Mexican director Alejandro Iñárritu has stepped out from the canned stage lights and into the natural light. Going from the backstage existential crisis of BIRDMAN to the frigid survival in the wild of THE REVENANT is quite a change of scenery. In the months leading up to the film, it seemed that that was what everyone was talking about. Iñárritu and DiCaprio were teaming up and filming a raw and intense movie out in the middle of nowhere. What a drastic change of pace for them both. In interviews and featurettes, the physical and mental hardships surrounding the production were highlighted, occupying the spotlight more than anything else.

THE REVENANT truly is breathtaking. The snowy landscapes are awe-inspiring. The performances are palpable. The action is gritty and fierce. Emmanuel Lubezki’s camerawork catches every heavy breath on camera. Iñárritu rubs your nose in the mud for over 2 and a half hours. Take that as a warning if you will. To me, I say warning, not because most people can’t handle the violence or “the gritty realism” – because I think most absolutely can – but because that’s what you’re getting for 156 minutes. Is it well done? Yes. Is it a brutish film that revels in its wolfish journey? Yes; perhaps even a little too much.

While on an exhibition out West, American Explorer Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) is nearly killed by a bear and left for dead by members of his team of fur trappers. Led by John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), the team deserts Glass in a shallow grave and ventures forth on their journey home. Injured but alive, Glass awakens and struggles to crawl, climb, and fight his way through the hostile wilderness, blanketed in a harsh winter. All this, in the pursuit of vengeance and redemption.

DiCaprio and Hardy could be sitting across from each other doing crossword puzzles and they would still be captivating to watch. Unfortunately for the two of them, THE REVENANT doesn’t give them as easy of a job as that. But as you would expect, both of these extremely talented actors are up to the challenge. You might need subtitles to understand some of what Hardy and his fellow fur trappers are saying, however, you can understand their sentiments through their facial expressions and actions.

The film’s intensity is astounding, but also, a smidge distracting. This is mostly due to the camerawork. Lubezki jumps between extreme close-ups of faces and upward camera shots (practically looking up the actors’ noses) to long takes that at times adds a heightened reality to the action, while other times it feels like a director and a cinematographer showing their hand too much. Some of it even becomes dizzying as some shots go on for several minutes at a time. I suspect some of this camera trickery is used to distract from the laborious affair of watching poor, injured Leo slowly trek across the landscape. Especially in the middle section, slow is the keyword. Leo’s journey across the icy landscape was so long that Morgan Freeman should have narrated it (and maybe adding a penguin or two couldn’t have hurt).

Mostly though, THE REVENANT is a revenge film masked as a deeper Terrence Malick character study. There’s no deep internal revelations or subtext at work, even though at times it makes you think there is. Long shots of our tragic hero are shown looking out into the distance, intercut with allusions of a past life. Moments like these attempt to add depth to his mission, but fail to add weight to the story. It’s a revenge film, but Iñárritu tries so, so hard to make it appear and feel like more than that. I could see this story as a Charles Bronson film from the 70s, but it wouldn’t have been over 2 and a half hours. Just call the film what it is. Don’t try to dress it up as something it’s not. Don’t attempt to recall Malick when you made a borderline exploitation revenge flick – complete with an unnecessary aftermath shot of a woman’s vengeful scorn on a male’s genitals and other gratuitous bloody shots.

There’s a Buster Keaton film from 1925 called SEVEN CHANCES. At the end of the film, the director/star tumbles down long dusty hills, jumps off a cliff into a tree, and is chased by an avalanche of boulders. He gets put through the ringer as “nature” almost stands in the way of our affable hero’s goal. You will most likely be slack-jawed at the physical exertion Keaton must have gone through to film it. That being said, the sequence is only 4 minutes long. THE REVENANT is a similar sequence but for much longer. Drawing out the thrills and spills for that long begins to feel tiresome. It’s visceral cinema done excruciatingly well. However, it’s a “B-movie” setup struggling with all its might to get in the “A-movie” spotlight.

Leonardo DiCaprio Discusses The Story Behind THE REVENANT In New Featurette

THE REVENANT

Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu brings the legend of Hugh Glass to the screen with THE REVENANT, an epic adventure set in the unchartered 19th century American Frontier. Immersing audiences in the unparalleled beauty, mystery and dangers of life in 1823 America, the film explores one man’s transformation in a quest for survival.

Part thriller, part wilderness journey, THE REVENANT explores primal drives not only for life itself but for dignity, justice, faith, family and home.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter, 20th Century Fox has released a new featurette where the cast and filmmakers give a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s story.

Of the director, DiCaprio says he gave Iñárritu his full trust. “What I really love about Alejandro’s approach is that he’s an old-school filmmaker who believes in the art of creating something on the screen — and he’s also kind of an outsider, even though he works on the inside. He understands the industry as it is now, but he’s been influenced by an entire lifetime of studying cinema history and developed his own uncompromising style that is now synonymous with his name. There are very few filmmakers out there who can escape the Hollywood mold and yet accomplish a film like this one on such an epic scale.”

The film’s wilderness-based production mirrored the harsh conditions Glass and company actually lived through in the 1800s. Iñárritu and his whole cast and crew were up for all that was thrown at them, welcoming the challenges of shooting in Canada and Argentina, regions known for unpredictable weather and untouched wilds, in order to fully understand the experience of fur trappers in the early 19th century. (Trailer)

Iñárritu collaborated closely with Golden Globe-winning and Academy Award-nominated actor Leonardo DiCaprio in a one-of-a-kind role as physically intense as it is emotionally raw. Along with Hardy, Gleeson and Poulter, Iñárritu guided a diverse international and Native American cast into the unseen past.

THE REVENANT

1,500 Native Americans and Canadian First Nations appear in the film.

Actress Grace Dove plays Powaqa, Glass’s fictional Pawnee wife. Dove is Secwepemc from Canim Lake First Nation.

In an interview with the Prince George, British Columbia newspaper, Prince George Citizen, the actress says, “Alejandro has so much respect for our culture and I really appreciate that.”

87th Academy Awards Winners – BIRDMAN Wins 4 Including Best Picture And Director

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Telecast

Welcome to the 87th Oscars. Host Neil Patrick Harris opened the show with a musical number featuring “moving pictures” inserting himself into scenes from classic films. Anna Kendrick joined him in the opening number as well as Jack Black before an audience of Hollywood’s A-listers at the Dolby Theatre.

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Telecast

The awards season, filled with ups and downs, came to a close on Oscar Sunday with BIRDMAN winning four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), Best Original Screenplay (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Jr. & Armando Bo) and Best Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki).

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Telecast

Iñárritu said his good luck charm was wearing Michael Keaton’s tighty‑whities. When asked backstage about the making of the film he said, “this film was particularly scary to be making, you know.  It’s very difficult and that’s what BIRDMAN is about. As an artist some day or two hours, you feel like the greatest and you say, “This is amazing.  It’s fantastic.” And then two hours later, you feel like a dead jellyfish and an idiot. In this case, I was Riggan Thomson seeing the material, saying, “Oh, my God.  It’s going to be a disaster.” So I couldn’t really tell until the end.  I really felt that it was really special, for me. I will never in mind that this film will be something that will be touching so many people around the world, and I will be here. Never at all, you know.”

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Portraits

Eddie Redmayne won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal as scientist Stephen Hawking in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING. When asked about the pressures of playing someone that is still alive and how did he change his approach to it, Redmayne said, “ I don’t know if it changed my approach, but what it did was there were various things of this job. In preparation, I met people living with ALS, they let me into their lives, they were incredibly kind to me.  It was essential to me that I was authentic to what that experience is like.  Then it’s about the science, getting the science right, you know, and then of course the main thing about Stephen, Jane, Jonathan and the kids is being true to them and then also making an entertaining film.  There were basically so many things that like terrified me about this film, but of course it galvanizes you, it makes you ‑‑ when the stakes are that high, it does force you to work harder and so that’s what I tried to do.  And yeah, it’s been amazing.”

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Portraits

Best Actress went to Julianne Moore for her portrayal of a woman diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease in STILL ALICE. When asked about her husband, who she acknowleged during her acceptance speech, Moore told the reporters backstage, “My husband has been amazing.  He has supported me ‑‑ now, he’s also the person who walked me up the steps.  I don’t know if anyone saw that.  But this is the first time I’ve told anybody this, and I’ll tell you guys in this room.  He was the first person to see the movie.  The first time I saw the cut, he came with me.  And I told the story about how I heard him crying, and I was like, What’s going on?  When we walked out of there, he said, You’re going to win an Oscar.  And I was like, Come on.  I swear to God, that’s what he said to me.  And I just couldn’t believe he said that.  But anyway, that’s how much he supported me from the very, very beginning.”

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Telecast

J.K. Simmons won Best Supporting Actor for WHIPLASH. On stage he thanked his wife and said, “Call your Mom and Dad and tell them that you love them.” On what it meant to win, backstage Simmons remarked, “For me, the lean times were a wonderful and beautiful part of my life, you know.  I was, you know, struggling, quote/unquote, for many years doing regional theatre for not much money all over the country and doing odd jobs in between, but I didn’t have a wife and kids to support.  So I had no responsibilities other than feeding myself and trying to be a decent human being and trying to get better at what I was wanting to do.  And I look back on those times with great fondness.”

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Portraits

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Telecast

The Best Supporting Actress Oscar went to Patricia Arquette for BOYHOOD. During her onstage speech, she said, “To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America.” Arquette continued the sentiment backstage, “even though we sort of feel like we have equal rights in America, right under the surface, there are huge issues that are applied that really do affect women.  And it’s time for all the women in America and all the men that love women, and all the gay people, and all the people of color that we’ve all fought for to fight for us now.”

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Portraits

87th Academy Awards, Oscars, Press Room

Graham Moore won the Oscar for Adapted Screenplay for THE IMITATION GAME. During his acceptance speech the screenwriter shared, “When I was 16 years old, I tried to kill myself because I felt weird and I felt different and I felt like I did not belong. And now I’m standing here and, so, I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she’s weird or she’s different or she doesn’t fit in anywhere. Yes, you do. I promise you do. You do. Stay weird. Stay different. And then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage, please pass the same message to the next person who comes along.”

BIG HERO 6 won for Best Animated Feature Film. Director Don Hall said, “Once upon a time, there was a freckle-faced little boy who told his mom and his dad that one day he was gonna work at Walt Disney Animation and they did something amazing: they supported him and they believed him, and from the bottom of his heart, he thanks them. Thank you.”

Best Live Short winner was THE PHONE CALL. The filmmakers Mat Kirkby and James Lucas told the press backstage, “Well, luckily, we were waiting so long to get Sally Hawkins, we waited a year, literally waited a year.  So, during that time, we kept busy, and we are both in Hollywood now with feature scripts under our arms touting for business.  So, if there’s any producers out there who would like to read a script by an Oscar winning short filmmaker who would like to make a feature film, then just get in contact with us.”
