STILLWATER- Review

As the Summer dwindles down into its final weeks, many Americans are hoping to make that final yearly vacation trip to a foreign land (with a new covid surge, that may prove very difficult right now). That notion’s at the core of this week’s new film release as a stoic simple man from the “plains” travels to one of Europe’s centers of high culture, a fabled section of France. Oh, and he doesn’t speak the language. Sounds like a “fish-out-of-water” culture-clash comedy. Oh no, it’s just the opposite. He’s on a desperate quest to save his daughter’s life, as she faces what could turn into a “death sentence” in a prison thousands of miles from her hometown in Oklahoma called STILLWATER.

The story begins just a few miles outside of that city as “between jobs” oil rigger Bill Baker (Matt Damon) picks up a few bucks as part of a “clean up crew” helping to clear the debris left from a tornado strike in a rural community. From there, he’s off to an interview at a construction site. The next morning Bill meets with his former mother-in-law Sharon (Deanna Dunagan) before his overseas visit with his daughter. Bill scoops up some last-minute gifts (an “Aggies” sweatshirt is a must) at the airport before his long flight to Marseille, France. He checks into a modest international hotel chain and encounters a cute eight-year-old girl playing in the hallway outside his room. From there he’s off to see his twenty-something daughter…at the women’s prison. Alison (Abigal Breslin) is five years into her sentence, convicted for the murder of her college roommate/lover Lina. During their monitored visit, she slips him a note, written in French, for her local legal team. He takes it to the law offices, but Abigal’s lawyer insists that her request will not prompt a new trial and that she must accept her fate. Returning to his hotel, Bill spots that same little girl sitting on the floor near a room. After a few words and lots of pantomimes, he learns that Maya (Lilou Siavaud) has been locked out of her room. Bill takes her to the front desk and aids in getting a new key card. Later her grateful mother, an aspiring actress named Virginie (Camille Cottin) knocks on his door and thanks him. Bill takes her up on her offer of help and asks her to translate Abigail’s note. In it, she tells of a visit from a former teacher who passes on a story from another student who had a bar conversation with a young man named Akim who boasted that he had gotten away with murder. Though Abigal calls him “inept’ in the letter, Bill contacts several local private detectives. One is sympathetic, though his fees are very high. He tells of connections in the police force, who could help with a DNA match if Bill could provide one of the “accused”. Thus begins his extended stay, as Bill decides to somehow track down this “braggart’ and free his only daughter from life inside a foreign jail.

Damon adds another superb portrayal to his ever-growing list of unique screen performances. There’s nothing “flashy” about Bill Baker, who could completely blend in at any rural small town or village in the US. In France, he somewhat “sticks out” though he never calls attention to himself. He’s reserved and emotionally restrained, but, in a play on his hometown (and the film’s title), his “still waters” run very deep. As the story progresses, we get several insights into his past: he lashed out at the local press during Abigal’s trial, incurring an assault charge. Many years before that he retreated into a bottle, perhaps spurring the suicide of his wife, Abigail’s mom. But through Damon’s intense stare with those dark half-lidded eyes, we see a man lurching himself toward redemption. Perhaps helping to free Abby will clean his messy “slate”. Even his new role as “manny” to Maya is a chance for a “do-over”. Bill has an inner strength, but he’s not a country “riff” on Jason Bourne, as he can barely keep himself mobile, let alone taking on the shadowy figures that spy on him from the widows of the slums. Damon shows us his trepidations as he must suddenly make life-changing decisions without really thinking things through. He makes this weary “everyman’ worthy of our emotional investment. He’s truly riveting in the strained encounters with Breslin as the volatile and dark Abigail. She keeps her papa at a distance, going through the gestures of a family: an awkward hug and brief clasping of hands. Her issues with Bill may have hastened her decision to place an ocean between them, but he’s her last real lifeline now. Still, she’s short and impatient with him, perhaps to continue her rejection of his previous lifestyle. Her mixed emotions are in her body language as she delves into the twisted relationship with her late lover. Later she’s given a “day pass’, but a trip to the beach with Bill only adds to her despair. She haunts his thoughts, but his mind is eased by the new friendship (could it blossom into a bit more) with the intellectual Virginie played with warmth and empathy by Cottin. She knows this gruff “cowboy” is the opposite of her cultural roots, but she is moved by his desperation. And she’s touched by his tender, but firm, handling of her spirited child, played by the adorable Siauvard as Maya. If her cooing of “Beeel” doesn’t melt your heart, check for ice water in your veins.

Oh, and this drama marks the return of director Tom McCarthy, the Oscar-winning talent behind SPOTLIGHT. He goes for an emotional portrait of these flawed characters, rather than exploiting the real-life inspiration (the ups and downs of the Amanda Knox saga) for the tragedy at the story’s center. Perhaps it’s because he also contributed to the unpredictable screenplay, aiding Marcus Hinchey, Thomas Bidegain, and Noe Debre. There’s no white hats (or caps) and black hats as there’s plenty of grey in the moral decisions made and actions taken. McCarthy makes expert use of the French locales, exposing its beauty, but also its ugly “underbelly” (seems there’s a lot of immigrant intolerance overseas). And there are no clear-cut winners, as the conclusion leaves room for much regret and remorse. McCarthy has concocted a most nourishing meal with healthy dollops of drama, mirth, and gritty, nail-biting suspense. Moviegoers will enjoy the complex, riveting journey of these displaced lost souls hailing from STILLWATER.

Watch 5 Clips From MAGGIE Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger And Abigail Breslin

MAGGIE_FINALPOSTER_3001428427764

“This is the most human zombie film you have ever seen,” said Schwarzenegger of his new film MAGGIE – in theaters this Friday, May 8.

MAGGIE is the directorial debut from British director Henry Hobson. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abigail Breslin and Joely Richardson.

By the time a necrotic viral pandemic spread cross- country to small town America and infected the film’s titular character, 16-year-old MAGGIE (Breslin), authorities had established a protocol for patients infected with the deadly virus: they are removed from society and taken to special isolation wards to complete the agonizing and dangerous transformation into one of the walking dead.

The authorities do not speak about what happens after that. Wade Vogel (SCHWARZENEGGER) is not ready to give up his daughter.

After weeks of searching for Maggie when she runs away following her diagnosis, Wade brings his daughter back to her home and family – stepmother, Caroline (RICHARDSON), and her two children - for whatever time may be left as the teenager begins an excruciatingly painful metamorphosis.

Having lost Maggie’s mother years earlier, Wade is determined to hold on to his precious daughter as long as he can, refusing to surrender her to the local police who show up with orders to take her.

As the disease progresses, Caroline decides to take their two younger children and move out, leaving Wade alone with Maggie to watch helplessly as she suffers.

On April 22nd, the film had it’s World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Schwarzenegger said, “this is something very new for me, and for the zombie genre. It was so different I didn’t just want to star I wanted to produce, which I normally never do.”

Based on an original screenplay by first‐time screenwriter John Scott 3, which made the industry’s 2011 Blacklist for best unproduced screenplays, MAGGIE marks the feature film directorial debut of renowned graphic designer, commercial and title sequence director, Henry Hobson, as well as the first time Schwarzenegger has starred in or produced a low-budget, independent film.

“When my team brought me this script and told me it was on the Blacklist, meaning it is one of the best scripts that hasn’t been made, I was intrigued,” said Schwarzenegger. You’re used to seeing me play the ‘ubermensch’, the action hero bullets can’t seem to hit. In Maggie, I am the everyman, a stoic farmer dealing with the most basic concerns‐ protecting his family, and savoring every last second with his daughter.”

“We’ve seen the zombie hordes and machine guns in other movies – it all seems like an unbelievable future. Maggie makes the disease real by shrinking the world of the movie to focus on one family, in the middle of nowhere, on their wasted farm. When I read it, I knew I had to do it. It is more vulnerable than any role I have played, more real, more emotional.”

Abigail Breslin who portrays the film’s title character sees the virus as just another indiscriminate disease or contagion that turns one’s daily life into a waking nightmare.

Breslin said she wanted the opportunity to portray the infected teen because she’s seen the horrible loneliness illness can bring.

“I really connected to the story because I’ve had friends who were really sick,” said the 19-year- old acclaimed actress, who made her big screen debut at age five in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2002 blockbuster film SIGNS.

“I didn’t see MAGGIE as a zombie movie, but rather a movie about a disease and the isolation of being sick. I thought it was something I could really go full force into and take my time with the character. Our film is a humanization of zombies. Maggie’s not a monster. She goes in and out of her animalistic behaviors as the virus takes over. There are scenes with her friends that offer moments of relief from her isolation and sadness, the fact she’s dying. These are glimpses of what her life should be like. Then, we come back heavier than before because it’s all changing, it’sall going away.”

BLU-RAY GIVEAWAY: Win HAUNTER Starring Abigail Breslin

bluray

A teenager comes to the distressing realization that she is a ghost, and must save others from the fate that befell her years earlier, in the eerie horror thriller HAUNTER. The latest film from scare master Vincenzo Natali arrives on DVD & Blu-ray on February 11, 2014, via IFC Midnight and MPI Media Group, with SRPs, respectively, of $29.98 and $24.98.

Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, August: Osage County, Zombieland) stars in director Vincenzo Natali’s (Splice, Cube, ABCs of Death 2) unique take on the traditional haunted house story. In 1986, 15-year-old Lisa (Breslin) and her family died in their home under sinister circumstances. Unable to move on, their spirits have continued to roam the house. And for nearly 30 years, they have had to live the same miserable day over and over, never thinking they’re anything but alive.

But now, Lisa has started noticing things that make her believe that she and her uncomprehending family are in fact ghosts. On top of that, she realizes that she must reach out from beyond the grave to help her living counterpart Olivia and her family avoid the same gruesome fate that Lisa and her loved ones suffered all those years ago.

Uniquely unsettling and shocking, HAUNTER is a one-of-a-kind reverse ghost story that chills long after the final frame. Veteran actor Stephen McHattie co-stars as the sinister Pale Man, along with Eleanor Zichy (TV’s “Skins”), Peter Outerbridge (Silent Hill: Revelation), Michelle Nolden (RED) and David Hewlett (Rise of the Planet of the Apes).

Annlee Ellingson of the Los Angeles Times called the IFC Films theatrical release “a freaky visual experience.” The Hollywood Reporter’s John DeFore called it “a love letter to ghost stories.”

HAUNTER, sure to thrill fans of such films as The Lovely Bones and Insidious, was an Official Selection at the 2013 SXSW festival.

ENDER’S GAME – The Review

endersgame

So, it’s time again for a film based on a popular young adult book series. Yup, already. Seems like the latest Percy Jackson adventure just left the multiplexes while the publicity machine for the second Hunger Games is in full swing. Well, this one has a bit of a different pedigree. First off, it is set fully in a space-hopping, science fiction future instead of the magical and supernatural based Jackson, Harry Potter, and Twilight (HG is set in the future, but minus much of the typical SF gadgetry). And it’s not based on a book series from the last ten years or so. The original short story that spawned the series was published way back in 1977. It does feature a teen hero and his pals,  with adults offering guidance (much like the faculty at Hogwarts). But this is no school or camp. These kids are for-real soldiers defending the planet. Hitting the theatres at long last is Orson Scott Card’s ENDER’S GAME. Let’s blast off…

As the film begins we are told that fifty years ago, an insectoid alien race, the Formics, attacked the Earth. Luckily they were driven back to their home world, but the military believes that they may return anytime. Teens (and some pre-teens) are recruited by the military and trained to defeat the Formics in a re-match. One such gifted teen is Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) who is whisked away to the training station, floating miles above Earth. Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and Major Anderson (Viola Davis) believe Ender has the special skills needed to lead the forces against another invasion. Throughout the training period Ender endures bullies, excels at a testing computer game, and eventually commands his own squadron which includes best pal (and maybe gal) Petra ( Hailee Steinfeld). The squad must act as one to win the training games and become Earth’s defenders. But Ender has a feeling that he’s not getting the full story…

Although he’s featured prominently in the TV spots, Ford is not the main focus (I guess marketing wants us to make a connection to some other Ford SF flicks. hmmm?). The main character is right in the film’s title and Butterfield does his best to bring him to life. Trouble is that the hero is kind of bland. Ender is too somber and serious. A few times he lightens up by putting down another bullying cadet, but then he’s dour once more. We wonder why Petra and the others are drawn to him (well, he’s not a thug likes some others up there). Steinfeld, who was so terrific in the TRUE GRIT remake, feels shackled by the standard moon-eyed girlfriend role. Ford pops in to liven things up a bit with his usual “growl and scowl” (his “go to” for many recent roles) while his character’s relationship to Ender remains murky. Davis is there as a more sympathetic adult coach, but the script doesn’t give her coherent motivations and the character away to be replaced by… Ben Kingsley, who pops up as a mystery man there to explain things to Ender (including his own distracting facial tattoos), and comes off as a watered-down Obi-Wan Kenobi. Miss Sunshine Abigal Breslin is there as Ender’s much-adored big sister Valentine who’s there as his Jiminy Cricket as she gives him a pep talk.

For the longest time Scott Card resisted offers for film versions of his work, saying it could not be visually translated. Even though he’s listed as one of the producers, he may still be correct. The film sluggishly lurches from one set piece to the next with little sense of urgency. The Formics are never shown gearing up for battle or hovering toward our planet. They’re just “out there”. The endless training sequences quickly become tiresome especially a sort of lazer-tag team battle in zero gravity. Ender’s gang seems to spend half the film floating and firing at one another. A subplot involving a computer role-playing has some slick animation, but hardly advances the story. The big invasion simulation test finale’ has the cadets sitting at control screens using drone ships to blast away at Formic fleets that just look like swarms of bees or locusts while Ender waves his arms about and shouts commands. It all just resembles a really sleek, hi-tech Chuck E, Cheese. Again, not very cinematic. The Formic themselves resemble CGI gigantic preying mantises and reminded me of the beasties in the much superior STARSHIP TROOPERS. That flick embraced its satirical elements while earning an R-rating for a load of gratuitous nudity and gore. The new flick also has a political subplot that keys in to current debates, but it has little of the older flick’s cheesy fun. You’d be better entertained by popping in a disk of that older flick that by spending an interminable two hours with these junior troopers. As the old insecticide ads said, “Quick Ma’, the Flit!”.
