Magnolia Pictures Picks Up Right To Werner Herzog’s LO AND BEHOLD: REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD

16579-1-1100

Magnolia Pictures announced today that it has acquired worldwide rights to LO AND BEHOLD: REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD, a playful and intellectually searching new documentary by legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog (GRIZZLY MAN, CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS) that offers a bold exploration of the past, present and constantly evolving future of the Internet. Praised by critics after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this week, the film features interviews (conducted by Herzog) with a diverse array of tech pioneers including PayPal and Tesla co-founder Elon Musk, Internet protocol inventor Bob Kahn, and famed hacker Kevin Mitnick.

Magnolia is targeting a 2016 theatrical release.

In LO AND BEHOLD: REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD, the Oscar-nominated Herzog chronicles the virtual world from its origins to its outermost reaches, exploring the digital landscape with the same curiosity and imagination he previously trained on earthly destinations as disparate as the Amazon, the Sahara, the South Pole and the Australian outback. Working with NetScout, a world leader in real time service assurance and cybersecurity, Herzog leads viewers on a journey through a series of provocative conversations that reveal the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works – from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships.

“As only he can do, Werner Herzog has crafted an endlessly entertaining and thought-provoking analysis of modern technology,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “Through his unique and inquisitive vision, LO AND BEHOLD: REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD allows audiences to experience the Internet in new ways.”

“My dream at Sundance to take off from the Olympic ramp on skis remains unfulfilled, but I am even more exhilarated by the fact that my film now is taking flight through Magnolia,” said Herzog.

“Our vision for this project has always been to inform as many people as possible about the perils and the possibilities of the connected world,” said Executive Producer Jim McNiel. “We could not have chosen a more capable partner than Magnolia to get the story out.”

Written and directed by Werner Herzog and presented by NetScout in association with Saville Productions, Pereira & O’Dell Entertainment and Skellig Rock, LO AND BEHOLD: REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD was produced by Rupert Maconick and Herzog. Executive Producers are Jim McNiel of NetScout, Dave Arnold, Tennille Teague and David Moore.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia SVP of Acquisitions Dori Begley and Magnolia VP of Acquisitions John Von Thaden, with Josh Braun, Dan Braun and David Koh of Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers. Magnolia Head of Worldwide Sales Christina Rogers and Magnolia VP of International Sales Scott Veltri will be representing the film for Magnolia International at EFM. All international rights are available.

SLC PUNK! February 3rd at Schlafly Bottleworks

“In a country of lost souls rebellion comes hard. But in a religiously oppressive city, where half it’s population isn’t even of that religion, it comes like fire!”

SLC PUNK! screens Wednesday night February 3rd at Schlafly Bottleworks at 8pm

Last month at Webster University’s Strange Brew Film series, we went back in time to 1976. This month, we go back to 1985 for a look at punk rockers adrift in a city of confounding religious values.

slc152

Writer-director James Merendino’s SLC PUNK! (made in 1998) is a tour through Salt Lake City through the eyes of two punks, Stevo (Mathew Lillard), an intellectual punk rocker devoted to anarchy and Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian) circa 1985. Stevo makes it clear early that Heroin Bob’s name is ironic for the fact that he is petrified of drugs, needles in particular. Stevo narrates the movie in the style of a documentary about punks in the Utah area, and infuses his own bizarre, high energy into the mix. These are not nice, normal kids, as we are told later. The religious prudishness of the region works on the local kids to cause more chaos, get into more fights. The entire local teen scene is dissected in a very funny high school film-strip quality lecture by Stevo. The scene is shared by Rednecks, Nazis, Mods, Rockers, and New Wavers. Under the surface, there is a thick mix of biblical and apocalyptic imagery and there’s plenty of frustration and commentary vented towards living in a city repressed by religious influence. The plot is not remarkably deep, but the emotions feel very real. SLC PUNK! is a crazy movie, very much alive and in your face!

Now you can hang with Stevo and Bob when SLC PUNK! screens Wednesday, February 3rd  at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, MO 63143) as part of their Strange Brew film series . The movie starts at 8pm and admission is $5. A yummy variety of food from Schlafly’s kitchen is available as are plenty of pints of their famous home-brewed beer.

HAIL, CAESAR! is an homage to Hollywood’s Golden Age, a valentine to the studio system laced with a lovingly acerbic edge. The film celebrates the dream factory, while cleverly pulling back the curtain to reveal some of the less-than-flattering inner workings of the film business in its heyday.

Starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum, HAIL, CAESAR! follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix.

His quest to break the spell of his disenchantment takes him on a series of adventures with six alluring women: rebellious Della (Imogen Poots); his physician ex-wife, Nancy (Cate Blanchett); a serene model Helen (Freida Pinto); a woman he wronged in the past Elizabeth (Natalie Portman); a spirited, playful stripper Karen (Teresa Palmer); and an innocent Isabel (Isabel Lucas), who helps him see a way forward.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced today that Sylvester Stallone will receive their prestigious Montecito Award for his critically acclaimed role in Ryan Coogler’s CREED.  Given to a person in the entertainment industry whose has made a great contribution to film, the award will be presented to him at a ceremony on Tuesday, February 9th at the historic Arlington Theater.

“Sylvester Stallone’s performance in Creed has reminded us of what a true talent he is and what a joy it is to share in his successes as the many beloved characters he has created.  Since he first hit the silver screen as Rocky Balboa nearly four decades ago, he has been a force in the industry both on film and behind the scenes.  He is a true legend in our field, and it is our privilege to present him with the Montecito Award, and to continue to honor his legacy,” said SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling.

Stallone first established worldwide recognition as an actor and filmmaker when he starred in 1976’s “Rocky,” from his own screenplay.  Both a critical and box office hit, the film garnered 10 Academy Award nominations including Stallone for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.  Most recently, Stallone received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for “Creed,” becoming only the sixth actor in Academy history to be nominated for playing the same role in two different films.

Stallone’s numerous film credits include the “Rocky” and “Rambo” films, “Copland,” “Tango & Cash,” “F.I.S.T.,” “Victory” and “Nighthawks.”

In addition to his extensive film career, Stallone is an accomplished artist, completing paintings on canvas as well as sculpture work.  He has had impressive exhibitions at Art Basil, The Russian State Museum and, most recently, at the Nice Museum of Contemporary Art in France.
