Over the weekend, “Hugh Jackman The Man, The Music, The Show” dazzled the Hollywood Bowl, playing the final 2 shows on the current leg of his sold out North American tour, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Outfitted in a sparkling silver Tom Ford jacket, Jackman hit the stage to perform all of his greatest hits from his film and Broadway career. The opening numbers included “The Greatest Show” and “Come Alive” from The Greatest Showman (2017), and the 17,000+ sold out crowd at the Hollywood Bowl was ready for him!
Hugh Jackman has made a massive, A-list name for himself as an acting-singing-dancing triple-threat and all of it was on display for the live shows. Along with The Greatest Showman, Jackman performed selections from Les Miserables (2012), in which he starred as Valjean, and also from his Tony-winning Broadway show “The Boy from Oz,” playing Peter Allen (2003). Peppered in between were selections that ranged from Broadway shows Beauty and The Beast (Gaston), and Dear Evan Hanson (You Will Be Found) to some of his favorite old Hollywood musicals (Singing in the Rain, 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls).
But it wasn’t just the great songs. Jackman has a stage presence like no other. He owns the stage, telling personal stories, show-biz stories, and interacting with the audience in a way that doesn’t seem possible when the ratio is 17,000 to 1. This was most evident in the stage extension built to get Jackman even closer to the fans, even pulling one young fan on stage to dance with him.
Also evident is Jackman’s love for his native Australia. He’s completely earnest when performing the Boy from Oz numbers, fully in character as Peter Allen, with an even more classic Aussie accent than his own. During another segment of the show, he introduces Aboriginal musicians and elders (Olive Knight, Paul Rider Boon, Nate Mundraby and Clifton Bieundurry) in tribute to Australia and his heritage, which felt even more magical under the stars of the Hollywood Bowl.
But the guests didn’t stop there. In one of the highlights of the show, Jackman’s Greatest Showman co-star Keala Settle performed “This is Me” with the Los Angeles Gay Men’s Chorus and joined Jackman on “From Now On”, both numbers she performed in the film.
By the end of the night, the entire Hollywood Bowl was on its feet, desperate for more, making it absolutely clear that Hugh Jackman is indeed, the greatest showman.

The Hi-Pointe Theater, at 1005 McCausland Ave in St. Louis, is the best place to see movies. Something about its city locale, its nostalgia factor, its retro interior, and the fact that they sell wine by the bottle make me think that Quentin Tarantino himself would be glad to hear that his latest film ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD opens there this Thursday, July 25th. Tarantino’sstory is one that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood. The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor…Sharon Tate (Margot Robie).Showtimes July 25th at the Hi-Pointe are 4pm and 7:30pm. Wednesday night is $5 Night!

“You know everyone has lots of ways of feeling, and all those ways of feeling are fine. It’s what we do with our feelings that matter in this life.” WAMG reviewer Michael Haffner began his fantastic review of the documentary WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? with a quote from Mister Rogers. Read the whole review of WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? here.
Now comes a new film on the person.
Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about empathy, kindness, and decency from America’s most beloved neighbor.
I’m too busy CRYING after watching this first preview. Hanks is sure to get a Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the kind man most of us grew up with.
Inspired by the article “Can You Say. . . Hero?” by Tom Junod, A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD opens November 22nd, 2019.
Great news for fans of old musicals! James Cagney in FOOTLIGHT PARADE (1932) is now available on Blu-ray from Warner Archives
Footlight Parade is sheer cinematic joy. In this Depression-era romp, a timid stenographer (Ruby Keeler) removes her glasses and – wow! – she’s a star. A gee-whiz tenor (Dick Powell) asserts his independence. Plucky chorines tap, greedy hangers-on get their comeuppances, and an indefatigable producer/dancer (James Cagney) and his Girl Friday (Joan Blondell) work showbiz miracles to stage live prologues for talkie houses to keep their company afloat during hard times. Honeymoon Hotel, By a Waterfall and Shanghai Lil are the shows, directed by Busby Berkeley and filled with imagination-bending sets, startling camera angles, kaleidoscopic pageantry and a 20,000-gallon-per-minute waterfall. Curtain up!
James Cagney demonstrates his Big Apple hoofer bonafides while adding his one-of-a-kind fiery grit to this Busby Berkeley musical packed with the usual sensational suspects. Chester Kent (Cagney) sees the song and dance business hitting the skids with the advent of talkies so he joins the enemy and becomes an impresario of curtain-raiser pre-movie show prologues. But Kent’s crew hides a spy for the competition, his business partners (Guy Kibbee and Arthur Hohl) are pocketing the profits, his ex-wife (Renee Whitney) turns out to be not-so-ex, a gold digger (Claire Dodd) has her hooks in him and his musical director (Frank McHugh) thinks “it can’t be done!” So it’s a good thing the greatest secretary in the world (Joan Blondell) is carrying a supersized torch for him. And that’s not even mentioning Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, Hugh Herbert and Ruth Donnelly… Footlight Parade gets a glorious refresh in this incandescent show-stopping HD master for 1080p Blu-ray Disc. Special Features: Featurette “Footlight Parade: Music for the Decades”; 2 Vintage Warner Bros. Shorts “Rambling ‘Round Radio Row #8” and “Vaudeville Reel #1”; 4 Vintage Warner Bros. Cartoons: Honeymoon Hotel, Young and Healthy, One Step Ahead of My Shadow and Sittin’ on a Backyard Fence; Theatrical Trailer

SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD plays midnights this weekend (July 26th and 27th) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series. A Facebook invite for the event can be found HERE
Take every genre that can be adapted into film, then go slightly beyond that, and you may find the 2010 film SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD. British director Edgar Wright, after SHAWN OF THE DEAD and before THE WORLD’S END, adapted Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Oni Press comic book of the same name about the eponymous slacker rocker and his colorful quest to defeat his dream girl’s seven evil ex-boyfriends. Wright captured the theme of the comic book, mixed in an aggressive visual style inspired by video games, amplified musical exchanges so they resonated like a live concert, and applied the physical laws of a Loony Tunes Cartoon. With a young cast superbly led by Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead but wonderfully supported by Allison Pill, Ellen Wong, Chris Evans, and Kieran Culkin, the result was a noisy, flashy, hipster mess. But luckily it had heart, which made it feel fun and unique and more like a lo-fi, endearing mess.
Box office-wise, SCOTT PILGRIM was something of a flop, but it found new life and a cult following, on DVD and cable, and now you’ll have the chance to see it again on the big screen (or for the first time if you missed it) when it plays this weekend ( July 26th and 27th ) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.
The Tivoli’s located at 6350 Delmar Blvd., University City, MO. Admission is a mere $8!
