Global SMURFS Day Returns Saturday, June 22

SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT GLOBAL SMURFS DAY

On Saturday, June 22, in celebration of the birthday of Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs (born June 25, 1928), Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation will once again coordinate events all over the world as part of Global Smurfs Day, a worldwide event in anticipation of the release of THE SMURFS 2, in theaters July 31.

This will be the second celebration of Global Smurfs Day in what is quickly becoming a tradition.  In 2011, the round-the-world events included painting one of the famous White Towns of Andalusia blue and setting a new record for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period (Multiple Venues).

This year, the studio has lined up an equally impressive program of events, highlighted by a worldwide Smurf Ambassadors initiative, in which over 40 ambassadors from 28 countries will represent Smurfs fans from around the world with a special day of events celebrating Peyo’s creation.  The ambassadors – celebrities, prominent journalists, and contest winners among them – will dress as Smurfs as they begin their day in Brussels, where Peyo’s daughter Veronique Culliford will officially appoint them as Smurf representatives of their countries.

The fun-filled (if irreverent) ceremony will take place under the watchful eye of an important Brussels monument:  a Smurf statue unveiled just a year before.  Freshly charged with their ambassadorial duties, the group will board a Thalys train and shoot off to Paris, the locale of the adventures in Columbia Pictures / Sony Pictures Animation’s The Smurfs 2.  With a few surprises in store and a sightseeing tour of the French capital, the ambassadors will be tasked with a mission that is the stuff of high diplomacy:  to leave a happy trail of blue smiles in their wake, and herald the arrival of the new film.

ft050.1069_lm_v2

The Ambassadors will also be taking photos and posting them on Instagram with the hashtag #GlobalSmurfsDay.  The Ambassadors’ photos will stream to the official Global Smurfs Day microsite at www.GlobalSmurfsDay.net, where users can also virtually check in to Global Smurfs Day activities and find information about all worldwide events, official photos, and a sizzle reel.

Festivals and celebrations will be dedicated to the Smurfs in locations as far and away as the Buenos Aires Planetarium,Mumbai’s Imagica theme park, and Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Sugarloaf Mountain.  Blue brushes will brighten Portugal’s Cova da Moura neighborhood and paint daycare centers and orphanages in South Africa.  In Australia, Surfers Paradise will officially become Smurfers Paradise for the day, with local signage to match.  Moscow’s famed Gorky Park and Dublin’s Ha’Penny Bridge will be covered in smurf-blue flowers.

Smurfs will visit children’s hospitals and media centers; invade Warsaw’s Old City Square; engage in sand sculpture marathons; run Smurfathons around the world; and kick off a massive sing-along with the group Right Said Fred in London.  And in Los Angeles, families will enjoy the day with appearances by the Smurfs, play the Ubisoft video game, sample Menchie’s Smurfberry frozen yogurt, and participate in other fun activities; in addition, the U.S. Forest Service and Ad Council’s Discover the Forest campaign will be on hand to distribute activity booklets and encourage children and their families to get outside and experience the many benefits of nature, and in the evening, families will be able to catch the first Smurfs film at an evening outdoor screening.

Commenting on the announcement, Weinstock said, “We’re thrilled that we can continue the tradition we started on the first film with an all-new Global Smurfs Day celebration.  This is a great way to honor Peyo’s birthday and his legacy, by bringing the world together across generations for a day of fun and festivities.”

In this sequel to Columbia Pictures / Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs™, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants, and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer.

tlra270.1046_com_lm_v12_r

It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?

The film is directed by Raja Gosnell and produced by Jordan Kerner.  The screenplay is by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss and Jay Scherick & David Ronn and Karey Kirkpatrick with a story by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss & Jay Scherick & David Ronn, Based on the Characters and Works of Peyo.

MAN OF STEEL – The Review

man-of-steel

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman – making his flight back into the multiplex after a 7-year absence. Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL is an improvement over Brian Singer’s SUPERMAN RETURNS (2006) which is never mentioned in discussions of great super-hero movies and Henry Cavill, this strapping young fella starring, makes Brandon Routh from the earlier film look downright womanly by comparison. Snyder has a distinctive vision to bring to the story and his “franchise reboot” at least feels like something other than a naked grab for dollars. It’s big and dark and eager to please, and it frequently succeeds, but despite its best intentions, it’s over-serious and overlong and not as much fun as it should be. MAN OF STEEL is a good movie but seldom ascends to the heights of 1978’s SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, still the best big-screen interpretation of the character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster eighty years ago.

MAN OF STEEL opens with Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and Lara Lor-Van (Ayelet Zurer) celebrating the birth of Kal-El, the first naturally born child in centuries on the dying planet Krypton. Rebellious General Zod (Michael Shannon) desires to take over power, battling and ultimately killing Jor-El (don’t worry – he’ll come back later to spiritually counsel his son). Just before Krypton implodes, baby Kal-El is rocketed away while the captured Zod and his goons are frozen eternally, to be thawed out later by the planet’s destruction. Kal-El reaches Earth and, as we’re shown is a series of flashbacks, is raised by upright Kansas farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane). They teach him to conceal his special powers as he grows because they know the human race would never accept him. The adult Clark Kent meets Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lois Lane while she’s on assignment in Canada to report an object trapped in ice which turns out to be the spaceship that contains the remains of General Zod. Lois begins an investigation of Clark, sparring with her editor Perry White (Laurence Fishburne), and eventually teams up with Superman to defeat Zod’s plan to replace humanity with the last of the Kryptonians.

MAN OF STEEL does what it does pretty well. The scenes where young Clark is baffled and traumatized by his special powers – the x-ray vision he initially can’t control or the heat beams that shoot from his eyes – provide good drama. The action sequences in the first half – an oil rig fire, a school bus accident, a tornado – are punchy and engaging, setting my hopes high. Unfortunately, when the action movies to Metropolis for the film’s finale, it feels like they handed the directorial reigns over to Michael Bay with massive big-scale effects sequences that may feed your inner 10-year-old’s appetite for destruction but seem dutiful instead of exhilarating. Since Zod’s a Krytonian, a foe of comparable strength, we get endless scenes of hero and villain smashing and sailing faster than speeding bullets through crumbling skyscrapers in a climactic battle that doesn’t know when to stop (thousands of Metropolites must perish in this climax but we never see them). It’s always been the more earth-bound quality of the Superman legend that made the comic-book fantasy soar, so to turn the climax into a Transformers retread is a disappointment. I wasn’t wanting, or expecting camp but MAN OF STEEL lacks a sense of humor. Snyder is unable to avoid the common comic-book adaptation trap of gloomy self-seriousness. Early in the film Lois Lane (Amy Adams) tells Clark Kent, who’s helping her unload her camera equipment to “be careful with those bags. They’re heavy”. It’s a funny line, but I was kept waiting for more like it.

Henry Cavill makes for a fine, rugged, muscular hero, combining correctly chiseled features with a likable soulfulness and humanity. He does a funny riff on the merit of handcuffs, but I mostly wished he would lighten up, or at least smile more. Amy Adams is less successful, turning Lois Lane into a relatively anonymous presence who makes little impact on the screen. She also seems miscast and, unless there was a cougar reference I missed, too old for the role (Ms Adams is in fact nine years older than Cavill) though we’re reminded several times that Clark Kent’s age is 33 (one of many Jesus references in the film – for more go HERE). A somber Michael Shannon lends gravity as a determined Zod, a military man born and bred to save his race. His is a complex and at times sympathetic villain and I did not miss Lex Luthor at all (though I did miss Jimmy Olsen – wtf?).

Visually, MAN OF STEEL is undeniably impressive. No expense has been spared bringing Snyder’s vision to the screen – it’s the hugest, loudest, smashiest film of the summer but too much of it is overkill, from the CGI destruction to Hans Zimmer’s bombastic score. MAN OF STEEL is not in the same league as the best men-in-tights adaptions. It’s well worth a look, but I think the more you dial down your expectations, the more you’ll enjoy it.

Watch The Hypnotic, New ELYSIUM Trailer

Matt Damon

Here’s a first look at the brand new, 3 minute-plus trailer for ELYSIUM.

That was tremendous! Director Neill Blomkamp‘s new film looks incredible. No surprise here seeing as this is from the director of DISTRICT 9.

Blomkamp not only helms this sci-fi, action film, but also serves as it’s writer.

The first trailer pales in comparison to this volatile second preview.

Matt Damon;Sharlto Copley

In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium.

With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

Jodie Foster

Starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and William Fichtner, ELYSIUM will be in theaters August 9.

THE EAST – The Review

east

It almost seems as though the spy biz was created especially for the movies, going back to the silents, through the World War II espionage tales and right into the fifty-plus year screen history of James Bond (and his many offshoots from Matt Helm and Derek Flint to Ethan Hunt’s “impossible missions” force). And there’s been the more serious spies as in Hitchcock’s TORN CURTAIN and TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY. The movies have also given us stories about true life spies like last year’s Oscar-winning Best Picture ARGO. With the over-a-decade long war on terror we’ve seen several films such as ZERO DARK THIRTY. But what about a terrorist attack not on a country, but on a corporation? Stories of these secret, shadowy groups have almost made headlines in recent years. These incidents are explored in the new motion picture drama, THE EAST.

As the film opens we witness surveillance footage of the latest strike by the eco-terrorist group that calls themselves “The East”. Black-clad figures push a huge metal barrel through the front entrance of a ritzy, plush estate during the wee hours. As they leave, black crude oil oozes out of the home’s heating vents, sinks, and showers. TV reports inform us that this is the house of an exec from an oil company in the news after one of its tankers spilled oil into an ocean. Sarah (Brit Marling) is an eager, ambitious investigator at a DC based private security firm. Her boss Sharon (Patricia Clarkson) assigns her the task of infiltrating The East (who have claimed responsibility for the home invasion), as per the wishes of their new client (said oil company). Quickly Sarah’s coloring her hair, lying to her beau (he thinks she’s off the Mideast), and joining several nomads living on the fringes (hitchhiking and rail-riding) as she tries to connect to the group. Finally she is admitted to their secret HQ deep in the woods. The small group (seven or eight) is headed by the fiery-tempered, suspicious Izzy (Ellen Page) and the cool enigmatic leader Benji (Alexander Skarsgard). As Sarah joins them in their attacks (called “jams”), she questions her beliefs. She begins to feel a loyalty to these societal outcasts while becoming disillusioned with her employers. Can Sarah complete her job and return to her old life?

An exceptional cast really brings this “pulled from the headlines” story to life! After a brief foray into major studio flicks ABRITRAGE and THE COMPANY YOU KEEP, Marling reclaims her indie “it girl” title (well, maybe a co-title with Greta Gerwig). This tale of deceit and intrigue is really told through her eyes. Sarah begins as a bit of a straight-arrow (listening to Christian radio in her car, twirling her gold cross necklace although she does share a cozy apartment with her boyfriend), but she soon must face some tough choices as many of her beliefs are turned upside-down. Neither “side” is completely good or bad. She must start seeing the world’s “grays”. Page is terrific as the tough cookie that hides the soul of a hurt little girl. Izzy’s tough, focused, and determined until one of the “jams” shatters her world too. Skarsgard projects a Svengali/Charlie Manson vibe in the early scenes as the group hangs on his very few words. He communicates with his piercing stare. We can understand how Sarah falls under his spell when he finally opens himself up to her. Kudos also to Tobey Kebbell as group member/medic Doc who first befriends Sarah and brings her into a “jam” that is inspired by his tragic altruistic past. Clarkson is one tough, controlling boss who can turn on her maternal side in a second to guide Sarah in her duties. There’s also strong performances by Jason Ritter as Sarah’s sweet, but clueless beau along with Julia Ormond and Jamey Sheridan as targeted corporates who are awakened by The East.

Director Zal Batmanglij, working from a script he co-wrote with Marling (this is their second feature collaboration after THE SOUND OF MY VOICE), keeps the pace at a feverish pitch. The “jam” sequences are full of shocks and suspense that exploit our own conflicts over the group’s actions. We’re alternately rooting for them and hoping that a few of the targets can escape unharmed. But the film also works during the quiet times as Sarah’s eyes are opened to some of the world’s cruelties. This is one of the few thrillers that should inspire some great ethical discussions after the lights have gone up. THE EAST is exciting, complex, full of fantastic actors, and one of this year’s best films.

Disney Announces Release Dates For Two MARVEL Projects, INTO THE WOODS And THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY

disney

Today, Walt Disney Studios announced a couple of updates on their films as well as dates for two UNTITLED MARVEL films. In line with Marvel’s successful tradition of opening films in early May, including the billion-dollar hits MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS and Marvel’s IRON MAN 3, these untitled movies will open May 6, 2016 and May 5, 2017.

The sequel to THE AVENGERS is still set to open May 1, 2015.

SAVING MR. BANKS (Disney) now opens December 13, 2013 in limited release and will still hit theaters nationwide December 20, 2013.

Two-time Academy Award®–winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks topline Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen.

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge.  He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.

It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

Disney presents “Saving Mr. Banks,” directed by John Lee Hancock, produced by Alison Owen, Ian Collie and Philip Steuer, and written by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith. Executive producers are Paul Trijbits, Andrew Mason, Troy Lum and Christine Langan

MUPPETS MOST WANTED (Disney)

In the follow-up to 2011’s THE MUPPETS, Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.

Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” is directed by James Bobin and produced by David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Bobin co-wrote the screenplay with Nicholas Stoller, who is also executive producer with John Scotti. Featuring music from Academy Award®-winning songwriter Bret McKenzie, “Muppets Most Wanted” hits the big screen March 21, 2014.

PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE (Disney) will be released on July 18, 2014 wide in 3D.

ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY (Disney) will be released on October 10, 2014. Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner have been cast. 21 Laps and The Jim Henson Company are producing and Miguel Arteta is directing. ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY, based on the award-winning children’s book by Judith Viorst, follows young Alexander through the mishaps of a terrible day for his family after he wishes they all would experience the same troubles he does.

TOMORROWLAND (Disney) moves to December 12, 2014 wide from the previously announced date of December 19, 2014. The film is being directed by Brad Bird and written and produced by Bird and Damon Lindelof. George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Raffey Cassidy and Thomas Robinson have been cast.

INTO THE WOODS (Disney) will now be released on Thursday, December 25, 2014. Rob Marshall is directing. INTO THE WOODS, based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, surrounds a baker and his wife’s quest to break a witch’s curse in order to start a family.  Along the way, they encounter several well-known fairy tale characters, and together they learn what happens after “happily ever after”.

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY (DreamWorks) will hit theaters nationwide on August 8, 2014. Lasse Hallstrom is directing with Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Juliet Blake producing. THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY, based on the international best-selling book by Richard C. Morais, tells the story of an Indian boy living in France who becomes the culinary apprentice to his father’s rival.
