The film, which is set to release in the United States later this year, is produced by Momoa and Brian Andrew Mendoza’s Pride of Gypsies with Jamey Pryde serving as executive producer. Wolf crosses paths with Cash (Mollohan), a down and out musician, and an unlikely bond is formed as they motorcycle across the vast highways of the American West in search of redemption.

Additional cast members include: Lisa Bonet (High Fidelity and The Cosby Show), Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest and Bullet to the Head), Michael Raymond-James (True Blood and Jack Reacher), Wes Studi (Last of the Mohicans and Avatar), Timothy V. BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD Documentary Explores Impact Of Horror Film NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

birthofthelivingdead_poster

Opening November 6 in New York at IFC Center, watch the trailer for Rob Kuhns’ feature documentary BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD.

In 1968 a young college drop-out named George A. Romero directed NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, a low budget horror film that shocked the world, became an icon of the counterculture, and spawned a zombie industry worth billions of dollars that continues to this day.

BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD, a new documentary, shows how Romero gathered an unlikely team of Pittsburghers — policemen, iron workers, teachers, ad-men, housewives and a roller-rink owner –to shoot, with a revolutionary guerrilla,run-and-gun style, his seminal film. During that process Romero and his team created an entirely new and horribly chilling monster – one that was undead and feasted upon human flesh.

This new documentary also immerses audiences into the singular time in which “Night” was shot. Archival footage of the horrors of Vietnam and racial violence at home combined with iconic music from the 60s invites viewers to experience how Romero’s tumultuous film reflected this period in American history. BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD shows us how this young filmmaker created a world-renowned horror film that was also a profound insight into how our society really works.

filmstrip

In the documentary, Gale Anne Hurd, Executive Producer of “Walking Dead,” as well as Producer of THE TERMINATOR and ALIENS explains how the zombies in NIGHT, as well as its mythology, are the basis of her hit show. Hurd got her start with Roger Corman and also speaks about what it’s like to make a film with little experience and no money.

Romero also goes through his efforts to get the film distributed and the ferocious attacks on NIGHT by U.S. critics when first released. Variety, for instance, called it, “an unrelieved orgy of sadism” which “casts serious aspersions on the integrity and social responsibility of its Pittsburgh-based makers.”

That all changed when the film went to Europe where it received huge box office and praise from prestigious film journals like “Positif” and “Sight and Sound.”

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was eventually invited to become part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In spite of the enormous success of the film worldwide, Romero and his partners got only a small fraction of the profits. The distributor accidentally removed the copyright notice from the negative and NIGHT fell into the public domain. The film went viral, with pirated copies playing worldwide. There’s no way to know how much money it has made.

Since its release NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD has been selected for preservation by the Library of Congress and the National Film Registry.

Sony Pictures Entertainment and MRC have agreed to co-produce and co-finance CHAPPIE, the next film from writer-director Neill Blomkamp. The film will star Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie.

CHAPPIE tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.

Blomkamp will direct the film from a screenplay he has written with Terri Tatchell. He will also produce the film with Simon Kinberg. Production is expected to begin this fall. In addition to Copley, Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, will be featured as the two gangsters.

Commenting on the announcement, Belgrad said, “We’re huge fans of Neill Blomkamp – it’s a real thrill to be continuing our relationship with such a visionary and important filmmaker. Neill has proven that he is a true original voice and we expect that Chappie will strike a chord with worldwide audiences in the same way that District 9 and Elysium have. We love the script he and Terri have written and we’re looking forward to working again with our friends at MRC.”

“Neill is an incredibly talented and bold artist and we are proud to continue to support his work. We are looking forward to partnering with the team at Sony on Chappie,” said Modi Wiczyk, co-CEO of MRC.

First Look At GRUDGE MATCH Features Kevin Hart, Sylvester Stallone & Robert De Niro

GM_03389.dng

Here’s your first look at Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro and Kevin Hart in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming GRUDGE MATCH.

In theaters on December 25th, De Niro and Stallone are old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for one final match in director Peter Segal’s comedy.

In GRUDGE MATCH, De Niro and Stallone play Billy “The Kid” McDonnen and Henry “Razor” Sharp, two local Pittsburgh fighters whose fierce rivalry put them in the national spotlight. Each had scored a victory against the other during their heyday, but in 1983, on the eve of their decisive third match, Razor suddenly announced his retirement, refusing to explain why but effectively delivering a knock-out punch to both their careers. Thirty years later, boxing promoter Dante Slate Jr., seeing big dollar signs, makes them an offer they can’t refuse: to reenter the ring and settle the score once and for all.

But they may not have to wait that long: on their first encounter in decades, their longfestering feud erupts into an unintentionally hilarious melee that instantly goes viral. The sudden social media frenzy transforms their local grudge match into a must-see HBO event. Now, if they can just survive the training, they may actually live to fight again.

The film also stars Kevin Hart (“Think Like a Man”) as Dante Slate Jr.; Oscar winner Alan Arkin as Razor’s former trainer, Louis “Lightning” Conlon, who gets to put Razor through his paces again; and Oscar winner Kim Basinger (“L.A. Confidential”) as Sally Rose, who was once the love of Razor’s life.

Rounding out the cast are Jon Bernthal (upcoming “The Wolf of Wall Street,” TV’s “The Walking Dead”) as BJ, who becomes The Kid’s instinctive but untested trainer; and young film newcomer Camden Gray (“Californication”).

Segal is directing from a screenplay by Tim Kelleher and Rodney Rothman, story by Tim Kelleher. The film is being produced by Bill Gerber (“Gran Torino”), Mark Steven Johnson (“Grumpy Old Men,” “Grumpier Old Men”), Michael Ewing (“Get Smart”) and Ravi Mehta (“The Lucky One”). Peter Segal, Jane Rosenthal and Kevin King-Templeton are serving as executive producers.

Collaborating with Segal behind the scenes are: Academy Award®-winning cinematographer Dean Semler (“Dances With Wolves,” “Apocalypto”); production designer Wynn Thomas (“Cinderella Man”); costume designer Mary Vogt (“Men in Black 3”); and editor William Kerr (“Bridesmaids”). Robert Sale, who was the technical advisor on “Rocky Balboa,” is serving as the film’s boxing consultant. The music is by Trevor Rabin.

The film has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for sports action violence, sexual content and language.

kick-ass-2-247431ID1d_FinRtd1Sheet_2_rgb (1)

With Jeff Wadlow’s action-comedy set to open this Friday, Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit KICK-ASS 2.

After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) do-it-yourself vigilante bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) – reborn as the super-villain The Motherf%&*^r – only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young masked hero Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do with their shared calling, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy.

Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire – leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.

Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, a new self-proclaimed super-villain, The Motherf%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

Considering the number of characters trying to either save or destroy the fair metropolis, WAMG is going to walk you through who does what to whom. Below is our Top 10 list on the brave superheroes and nasty super-villains who populate this world. They’re good, bad and/or ugly, but don’t underestimate these formerly ordinary folks who just want to kick some ass.

Kick-Ass and Hit Girl’s Inner Circle

1. Dave Lizewski/Kick-Ass:

Dave/Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is a New York teenage vigilante whose bravery inspired a new wave of self-made masked crusaders. With graduation looming and uncertain of his future plans, Dave decides to start t e world’s first superhero team with Mindy, aka Hit Girl. When Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster who calls himself Colonel Stars and Stripes.

2. Mindy Macready/Hit Girl:

A 14-year-old, blade-wielding, nunchaku-skilled force of nature, Mindy/Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) is going through the awkward stages of freshman year. Highly trained and heavily armed by her late father, Big Daddy, she still can’t escape the snide comments from the popular girls in her class. She’d rather kick some thug’s ass than face high school, so she sneaks out as soon as her guardian drops her off.

3. Marcus Williams

After Mindy’s father’s death at the hands of Frank D’Amico, Big Daddy’s old partner, Marcus Williams (Morris Chestnut), became her guardian. Marcus drops Mindy off at high school every day, but as soon as he leaves, so does she. He made Mindy promise she’d give up her extracurricular activities as Hit Girl, though he fears he’ll find katana blades under her bed every time he looks.

Kick-Ass 2

4. Marty/Battle Guy and Todd/Ass Kicker:

Marty and Todd are Dave’s comic-book collecting best friends. Though Marty (Clark Duke) plans to be premed at college, he has secretly developed a superhero persona named Battle Guy. Inspired by Kick-Ass, he excitedly joins Justice Forever. Todd’s future plans are up in the air, though he currently plans to attend a safety school in Florida to study golf course management. Wanting to be a part of something important, Todd/Ass Kicker (Augustus Prew) is eager to join any team that will have him.

5. Katie Deauxma:

Dave’s super-cute girlfriend, Katie (Lyndsy Fonseca), is super-excited to get her life started. She plans to attend college, and Dave is expecting she’ll dump him as soon as she heads off. The cute couple has started suffering from boredom in the bedroom: She fantasizes about another guy while Dave daydreams about his English teacher.

Justice Forever

6. Sal Bertolini/Colonel Stars and StripesInsect Man, Tommy’s Mom and Dad, Night Bitch and Dr. Gravity:

Sal Bertolini/Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey) is a morally driven ex-mobster, a leader who is decked out in camouflage and an iconic mask. He patrols the streets with his trusted and masked sidekick, a German shepherd named Eisenhower. The Colonel created Justice Forever to protect people when the system fails, and he hates foul language as much as he hates evil.

Colonel Stars and Stripes leads Justice Forever in a vigilante raid.

One of the more enthusiastic members of Justice Forever, Dr. Gravity (Donald Faison) is a copywriter who pretends he’s a physics professor by day and a super hero by night. His physics “knowledge” comes in handy when he creates a zero-gravity device that can levitate any object up to a ton… but in fact, it’s just a baseball bat covered in tin foil.

A ballet teacher by day, Miranda Swedlow assumed her superhero persona, Night Bitch (Lindy Booth), after her sister was murdered. Although she is helping Justice Forever fight crime, Night Bitch also gets closer to its newest member, Kick-Ass… in every fast-food restaurant bathroom in the city.

Kick-Ass 2

5684_FPF_00371R_CROP

Insect Man (Robert Emms) has been bullied his entire life for being gay, so now he’s standing up for the defenseless. Armed with a taser (and an impossibly wealthy knowledge of bugs), Insect Man doesn’t need a mask to make the world a better place.

In the comic series, Tommy’s Dad/Remembering Tommy (Steven Mackintosh) wears a homemade suit of armor, while Tommy’s Mom (Monica Dolan) is dressed like an Amazonian warrior. In our story, they are decked out in T-shirts with the name “Remembering Tommy” to honor their son who vanished without a trace.

Kick-Ass 2

The Motherf%&*^r’s Super-Villains

7. Chris D’Amico/Red Mist/The Motherf%&*^r:

The spoiled son of deceased crime boss Frank D’Amico, Chris D’Amico/Red Mist/The Motherf%&*^r (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) has grown obsessed with taking revenge on Kick-Ass, who blew up Frank with a bazooka. After Chris’ mother’s (YANCY BUTLER) untimely death, Red Mist – freshly dressed in her old fetish gear and cape – is reborn as The Motherf%&*^r . So begins the richest kid in New York City’s quest to become the world’s first real super-villain.

8. Javier:

Javier (John Leguizamo) is Chris’ bodyguard, and he’s reluctant to call his employer by an upgraded super-villain name (he had a hard enough time calling him Red Mist). The Alfred to is boss’ evil Bruce Wayne, Javier is tasked with helping The Motherf%&*^r expand his super-villain team. Now that Chris has lost both parents, Javier is the only real family he has left.

Kick-Ass 2

9. Katarina Dombrovski/ Mother Russia and Black Death:

The highest-paid member of The Motherf%&*^r’s team, Katarina Dombrovski/ Mother Russia (Olga Kurkulina) is a bodybuilder and former KGB member who can beat anyone to a pulp. She was locked up in the Gulag…until she ate her cellmate and escaped. Black Death (Daniel Kaluuya), of course named as such by The Motherf%&*^r , met Chris at an MMA gym, where e promptly kicked Chris’ ass to the mat. Impressed, Chris hired Black Death to beat up anyone on his hit list.

10. Genghis Carnage and Big Tony/The Tumor:

Chris insists that his underling’s names aren’t racial stereotypes, they’re archetypes. Genghis Carnage (Tom Wu) is a former Chinese gangster looking for a new boss. The Motherf%&*^r hires him to do his heavy lifting and heavier attacking. Big Tony/The Tumor (Andy Nyman) is reminiscent of one of our favorite Goodfellas… all 5 feet 2 inches of him. Although this psychotic killer may be small, he’s mean as hell and will stab you with a pool cue if you look at him funny.

Kick-Ass 2

5684_FPF_00367R

From a screenplay by director Jeff Wadlow (Cry-Wolf, Never Back Down) and based on the comic book created by Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass) & John S. Romita Jr. (Kick-Ass), the action-comedy is produced by Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass), Adam Bohling (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake), Tarquin Pack (X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) and David Reid (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake).

KICK-ASS 2 will be in theaters August 16.

Lionsgate’s YOU’RE NEXT takes one of the most terrifying film genres, the home-invasion movie, and turns it on its head—adding dimension, drama, and bone-chilling realism to one of life’s most universal fears. The story follows an upper-class family, the Davisons, who are as rich as they are estranged. In an earnest attempt to bring everyone back together, Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their four children and their significant others to a family reunion at their remote and slightly rundown weekend estate.

At first it seems like decades-old sibling rivalries will derail any hope of reconciliation. But that quickly, and very abruptly, becomes the least of the Davisons’ concerns when their home comes under siege by a mask-wearing team of crossbow-bearing assailants. The family has no idea who’s attacking them, why they’re under attack, or if the attackers are inside or outside the cavernous, creaking house. All they know for certain is that nobody is safe.

Anton Yelchin (STAR TREK) and Dakota Johnson (21 JUMP STREET) join a cast which includes Ethan Hawke, Ed Harris and Milla Jovovich in writer/director Michael Almereyda’s modern day adaption of Shakespeare’s timeless play CYMBELINE produced by Anthony Katagas (12 YEARS A SLAVE, THE IMMIGRANT, KILLING THEM SOFTLY) for Keep Your Head Productions and Michael Benaroya (MARGIN CALL, KILL YOUR DARLINGS), who will fully finance the film through his banner Benaroya Pictures.
