Limited Edition Blu-ray of Mel Gibson’s BRAVEHEART To Be Released June 23 in Great Britain

Hard to believe it’s been nearly 20 years, but it’s about time!

Released in 1995, the epic blockbuster BRAVEHEART is getting the royal treatment in the form of an all-new Limited Edition Blu-ray Gift Set on Monday, June 23, 2014 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. And really, other than in a theater, this is the way this film should be seen.

Nominated for 10 Oscars, it won 5 – including Best Picture, Best Director (Mel Gibson) and Best Cinematography (John Toll). BRAVEHEART is a stunning, sweeping masterpiece that deftly combines history, heart-stopping battles, and a heart-wrenching love story. There are lots of extra goodies in this box set as well!

Deep in the woods, a comet crashes, luring an old man (just like in THE BLOB). He finds a circus tent… but inside isn’t a circus, but hideous killer clowns who want to trap you in cotton candy cocoons and do terrible clown things to you. Just try telling the police, because they won’t believe you. Shadow puppets that eat bus passengers? Popcorn that grows into little fanged Klown monsters? A balloon dog that barks? 30-year old actors playing teenagers? Yeah, that’s plausible!

You may want to check under the bed – there may be a Killer Klown under there!

KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE was an outrageous film from 1988 that perfectly tapped into the ickiness that is clowns (not a phobia really – more of a complete revulsion). Yes, all clowns actually look just like the ones in the film but they have a certain glamour that dazzles most people and stops them from seeing how utterly gross and nasty they really are. Seeing KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE should brush the scales from their eyes. It was a ridiculous concept to be sure, but in all fairness, for its budget this film is really fun, and writer/directors Richard and Charles Chiodo go a long way to make even this dumb idea look slick. The special effects are tight and the costumes are amazing. The cocoons and other props are believable for what they are and you will have fun unless you have a big candy cane stuck up your butt.

KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE bypassed St. Louis in its original 1988 theatrical run, but the guys at Destroy the Brain are offering it up at this month’s Late Night Grindhouse Midnight film series at our town’s awesome Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave.) The show is midnights this Friday and Saturday nights (May 2^nd and 3rd). The pre-show begins at 11:30 and admission is only $7.

JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie To Be Helmed By Zack Snyder

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie has received the green light.

“Confirming the studio’s plans for a movie based on its iconic super-team for the first time, Warner Bros. president of worldwide production Greg Silverman said the studio has set plans to make a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.”

“Like MAN OF STEEL and its follow-up, which starts production next month, JUSTICE LEAGUE will be directed by Zack Snyder. Henry Cavill is expected to return as Superman, along with Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, who play Batman and Wonder Woman, respectively, in 2016’s MAN OF STEEL sequel tentatively titled BATMAN vs. SUPERMAN.”

The report also states,

“It will be a further expansion of this universe,” said Mr. Silverman. “’Superman vs Batman’ will lead into ‘Justice League.’”

A script is still in development and Warner has not set a release date, though the movie is unlikely to come out before 2018. Mr. Silverman would not comment on what other heroes might join Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman in the movie. However the studio has recently been casting the role of Cyborg, a half-robotic hero who is expected to have a cameo in “Batman vs. Superman” and then appear in “Justice League.” Other DC heroes who have been in Justice League comic books include Aquaman, Flash and Green Lantern.

The Justice League (of America) really began in 1940 in All Star Comics #3 as the Justice Society of America (JSA) which united the early heroes of National Periodicals Publications: Green Lantern, the Flash, Hawkman, Dr.Fate, Hour-Man, the Spectre, Sandman, and the Atom.

Superman and Batman were charter members with Wonder Woman and Black Canary along with other superheroes joining the team in later issues. That series ended its run in 1951 with All Star Comics #57.

When National (now referred to as DC, Detective Comics) began the silver age of comics with their re-introduction of the Flash in Showcase #4, they eventually decided to bring back the JSA concept under a new name, the Justice League of America (JLA) in Brave and Bold comics #28 in 1960 with founding members the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman. After getting their own title, Superman and Batman became full time members.

Over the years this has proven to be one of DC’s most popular books as the team roster has expanded to include nearly all of the company’s heroes. The JLA first came to TV in 1967 as a segment of Filmation’s ” The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure” on CBS Saturday mornings. A few years later a paired-down JLA, “The Super Friends”, produced by Hanna/Barbara began a long run on ABC.

In live action, members of the team were featured in a two-part NBC prime special as “Legends of the Superheroes”, and in 1990 an unsold JLA live action pilot was produced, but not aired, in 1997. The group returned to animation in 2001 in the “Justice League” series running for five seasons on cable’s Cartoon Network.

Snyder’s BATMAN vs. SUPERMAN will also star Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and reunites MAN OF STEEL stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

Newcomers include Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey of “300: Rise of an Empire,” and Tao Okamoto of “The Wolverine.” All three actors will play characters newly created for the film.

BATMAN vs. SUPERMAN is written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

BATMAN vs. SUPERMAN is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, and is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

Peter Jackson Revamps 3rd HOBBIT Movie Title – THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES

Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema jointly announced on Friday that the much-anticipated final film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, has now been titled THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES.

The film, previously titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” will be released worldwide December 17, 2014, with select international territories releasing on December 10, 2014.

Peter Jackson stated, “Our journey to make ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. ‘There and Back Again’ felt like the right name for the second of a two-film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced — after all, Bilbo has already arrived ‘there’ in the ‘The Desolation of Smaug.’

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate. And so: ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ it is.”

Jackson also produced the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Philippa Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.

The creative behind-the-scenes team is led by director of photography Andrew Lesnie, production designer Dan Hennah, editor Jabez Olssen and composer Howard Shore. The costumes are designed by Richard Taylor, Bob Buck and Ann Maskrey. Taylor is also overseeing the design and production of armour, weapons, creatures and special makeup, which are once again being made by the award-winning Weta Workshop. Oscar-winning visual effects studio Weta Digital is again handling the visual effects for the film, led by senior visual effects supervisor Joe Letteri. The hair and makeup designer is Peter Swords King. The conceptual designers are John Howe and Alan Lee. Eric Saindon is the visual effects supervisor, with David Clayton serving as animation supervisor.

Under Jackson’s direction, THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES was shot in 3D 48 frames-per-second and will be released in High Frame Rate 3D (HFR 3D) in select theaters, other 2D and 3D formats, and IMAX®. Production took place at Jackson’s own facilities in Miramar, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand. Post production took place at Park Road Post Production in Wellington.

Returning to her childhood home in Louisiana to recuperate from a horrific car accident, Jessabelle (Sarah Snook of Sleeping Beauty) comes face to face with a long-tormented spirit that has been seeking her return – and has no intention of letting her escape.

Directed by Kevin Greutert, the cast includes Mark Webber, David Andrews, Joelle Carter, Ana de la Reguera, Larisa Oleynik, Chris Ellis, Fran Bennett, and Amber Stevens.

JESSABELLE opens in theaters nationwide on AUGUST 29th, 2014.
