Clint Eastwood’s AMERICAN SNIPER Takes In Estimated $105.3 million Over Four-day Holiday Weekend

AMERICAN SNIPER

Surpassing all targets, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ multiple Oscar-nominated drama AMERICAN SNIPER smashed virtually every available record as it opened nationwide on the heels of its already record-breaking limited release. Easily topping the box office, the film took in an estimated $105.3 million for the four-day holiday weekend and has grossed $108.7 million to date and counting.

The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, and Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures

The film’s spectacular opening marks an all-time high over the course of director Clint Eastwood’s illustrious career. Among its many other milestones, AMERICAN SNIPER also broke records for a January weekend opening, including both three- and four-day weekends; the highest single day ever in January; the best four-day weekend for an R-rated film; and the biggest opening for any drama in cinema history.

The film also broke records in IMAX theatres nationwide, earning more than $10.6 million at 332 locations, making it the top-grossing January weekend ever for the large-format venues.

The overwhelmingly positive response to AMERICAN SNIPER is not only measured at the box office. It also earned a rare A+ Cinemascore rating, becoming one of only 11 films in history to receive an A+ in every category.

In his review, Tom Stockman wrote AMERICAN SNIPER “is a great film, an intelligent film.”

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “‘American Sniper’ has quickly become a cultural phenomenon, offering a personal view of not only Chris Kyle’s life but also of the hurdles faced by many veterans, as well as their families. We congratulate Clint Eastwood, Bradley Cooper and everyone involved in the film on this enormous success, and we expect strong reviews and word of mouth to continue to fuel the box office in the coming weeks.”

“We are so proud of this movie,” said Kroll. “We had a visceral reaction to it when we saw it and immediately made room for it in the year. We certainly couldn’t have known the level at which the film would resonate, but we knew it was special—providing a different look at war and its emotional impact on those who fight and those at home, which has struck a deep chord with filmgoers everywhere. From the first trailer, we designed this campaign to convey the different facets of the film and showcase its appeal to both men and women. The response from critics, audiences and, now, the Academy, has been hugely gratifying and we could not be more thrilled.”

Silverman added, “We knew this was a story that could transcend any divide with its compelling character study of a man who deserves to be remembered for his sacrifices on and off the battlefield. Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper have truly done the story of Chris Kyle justice and, in doing so, have also paid homage to the service of all men and women in uniform. We congratulate them and our partners at Village Roadshow on this extraordinary start to our worldwide run.”

AMERICAN SNIPER has earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Cooper), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Jason Hall). In addition, Eastwood was honored by his peers with his fourth Directors Guild of America Award nomination and also won the National Board of Review Award for Best Director. The film’s other honors include a Producers Guild of America Award nomination, a Writers Guild of America Award nomination, and a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Eastwood directed AMERICAN SNIPER from a screenplay written by Jason Hall, based on the book by Chris Kyle, with Jim DeFelice and Scott McEwen. Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller star in the film, produced by Eastwood, Robert Lorenz, Andrew Lazar, Cooper and Peter Morgan. Tim Moore, Jason Hall, Sheroum Kim, Steven Mnuchin and Bruce Berman served as executive producers.

The film has been rated R for strong and disturbing war violence and language throughout, including some sexual references.

Win A Run-Of-Engagement Pass To See A MOST VIOLENT YEAR in St. Louis

AMVY_Payoff (691x1024)

Opening in St. Louis on January 30th, WAMG is giving away Run-Of-Engagement passes to see A MOST VIOLENT YEAR.

A MOST VIOLENT YEAR is a searing crime drama set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically the most dangerous year in the city’s history. From acclaimed writer/director J.C. Chandor, and starring Oscar Isaac (INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS) and Jessica Chastain (ZERO DARK THIRTY), this gripping story plays out within a maze of rampant political and industry corruption plaguing the streets of a city in decay.

J.C. Chandor’s third feature examines one immigrant’s determined climb up a morally crooked ladder, where simmering rivalries and unprovoked attacks threaten his business, family, and – above all – his own unwavering belief in the righteousness of his path. With A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, Chandor journeys in a bold new direction, toward the place where best intentions yield to raw instinct, and where we are most vulnerable to compromise what we know to be right.

The film also stars David Oyelowo, Alessandro Nivola, and Albert Brooks.

This pass admits two (2) at The Tivoli Theatre.

Passes are good February 2nd through February 5th

PIZZA AND BULLETS – The Review

pizza2 copy

Review by Kathy Kaiser

Writer & Director Nick Murphy has managed to bring to life the most enjoyable short-film I have been privy to see in a long time – combining the attributes of sweet & adorable PIZZA DELIVERY GUY with the nastiness of HIRED HIT-MAN – but it’s okay, cause it’s all in a days work – with his new film – PIZZA AND BULLETS.

As we meet the always cordial and loveable James (Played by Nick Murphy), he is riding his scooter around town delivering Pizza’s as fast as he possibly can.   Making his daily stop to check in with friend Nolan (played by Sean Rourke) we find that MR. PIZZA DELIVERY GUY, may not be as nice as we first thought…

Nolan orders James to take on his next hit, #143, but who’s counting, so James heads out to take care of his next menace to society, but he is making tracks because he needs to get home for “date night” with his girlfriend Elly (played by Terra Flowers), who has no idea about “HIS OTHER JOB”…

James finds himself in a place he didn’t anticipate, when the brother of his last hit kidnaps Elly and promises to kill her…

Can James manage to save the love of his life? And if he can save her, will he be able to explain the real line of work he’s in, which is what got her in this mess in the first place? And who else might have an inkling about James’s other line of work, putting Elly’s life in jeopardy?

I give PIZZA AND BULLETS 3 out of 5 Stars: The concept of this film is hilarious, and Nick Murphy plays the part of James perfectly. You will find comfort in the warm and very funny spin Murphy puts on this film, reassuring you that a PIZZA DELIVERY GUY is the perfect alibi for being a hit man…come on.. no one ever thinks its him! Murphy also made the wise move of surrounding himself with superb actors, and fantastic cinematographers, making PIZZA AND BULLETS an absolute joy ride to view from beginning to end. I enjoyed viewing this short film more than I have enjoyed viewing many commercial, full-length features this last year too – Seriously! I truly feel that Murphy could take this short film and make it into a new show for the Fall lineup on one of the networks, as the quirkiness of the storyline and the superb acting throughout would keep me coming back for more each and every week!!! Or maybe Murphy should put James back on his very impressive blue scooter to make another film, as James is one character that can take out every bad guy in this world, and you would be right there with him, supporting him every step of the way

BLACKHAT – The Review

blackhat_nws1

Even just an average Michael Mann film is still a Michael Mann film – which isn’t a bad thing in my book. The man has a unique style that has developed over his career that’s often described as gritty, in your face, and just plain cool. This is mainly in part due to his more recent use of digital photography that he embraced starting with the movie COLLATERAL. It’s a storytelling choice that has produced a mixed bag of films but nevertheless feel like Mann films (though “man films” would be appropriate as well due to his knack for tough guy stories). BLACKHAT gives fans of Mann’s macho style what they have come to expect: a cold but mainly likable anti-hero, a world of elite cops and criminals, intense shoot-outs, and skylines lit with neon lights at night. All of this mind you, filmed with shaky camera work and layered with digital noise. BLACKHAT doesn’t serve as the most exciting crime game board Mann has played on, but it does give him the chance to show off all his usual tricks he’s learned over the years. He’s clearly a talented filmmaker that demands to be seen – especially since it has been 6 years since his last film – I just wish he might have waited for some material that was a little more engaging.

After a Chinese nuclear plant attack and a rapid rise and decline of specific goods in the stock market is ruled to be from the same attacker by Chinese investigator Chen (Wang Leehom), the Chinese government is forced to work with the American government to take down a cyber criminal who is using the same code that a famous cyber criminal developed long ago as a class project. This criminal is the often shirtless Thor – I mean Hathaway (Chris Hemsworth). With the help of a couple of US cyber security experts (Viola Davis and John Ortiz) and Chen’s kid sister (Wang Tei), Hathaway and Chen fight their way across the globe including Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Jarkata.

In the cyber crime world of BLACKHAT, hacking isn’t just two guys sitting across the world from each other punching keys on a keyboard in a virtual game of Battleship. Mann and first-time screenwriter Morgan Davis Foehl attempt to craft something more akin to a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE adventure story. Our crack team of perfectly mixed, multi-ethnic crime fighters land in a different country almost every 30 minutes. Tracking criminals through HTML coding is no doubt tedious and boring for even the IT crowd, so instead we have chases through countries and gun fights in the streets. Of course the idea of all this is absolutely absurd, but Mann grounds it in such a way that you feel like your watching a techie Indiana Jones solve puzzles instead of an overweight kid in his mom’s basement. Some level of believability just has to be thrown out the window, even if that’s contrary to what Mann often proposes with his films.

cdn.indiewire

Michael Mann has always been a director that’s connected with realism. His shoot-outs feel almost too real. It’s as if you’re right there in the action and it’s always incredibly loud. The intimacy of his conversations between characters feels too real. Like for example the beginning of COLLATERAL where Jada Pinkett Smith and Jamie Foxx discuss their lives and life goals in the cab. It’s weird than that Mann is attune to this in some cases in BLACKHAT (like the police procedural stuff) and yet other times he’s not (by structuring a story about hackers that are just as good at kicking ass and being Calvin Klein models). Yes, some of it works, others times though it feels far-fetched. For example, how does someone who works for the NSA just download an encrypted file to his or her computer without checking the legitimacy of it first?

Hemsworth follows in the footsteps of Mann’s previous tough guys: James Caan, William Petersen, Robert DeNiro, and Tom Cruise. He grimaces through most of his scenes and talks with an accent that sounds like someone from upstate New York with a mouthful of chili-dog. He’s barely audible at times, but then again, so many scenes go in and out due to terrible sound mixing. Viola Davis does shine when she’s on camera. There’s a gravitas to her performance, and she even gives the film a bit of humor as we witness her rule some of the boys with an iron fist. Nothing nice can be said of Tang Wei and the blossoming relationship that transpires between her and Hemsworth. If you take Colin Farrell’s love detour in the middle of MIAMI VICE, then double that agony and screen time but stick with the same lack of chemistry, than you’re about there.

BLACKHAT is another “Mannly” film through and through. Cars explode, bullets riddle bodies, blood is ceremoniously spilt, and bright lights ignite Asian streets, all in a way that only Michael Mann can produce. There’s an art to his films. No, it’s not high-art, but there’s still a level of calculated artistry to his crime-ridden worlds. BLACKHAT might be one of his least absorbing and least thrilling ventures into crime, but I can’t quite dismiss the confident and macho cool Mann has to offer.

Overall rating: 2.5 out of 5
