Green Band Trailer –

Red Band Trailer – (send the kiddos out of the room for this one)

Also written by Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer), the actress stars as a woman who lives her life without apologies, even when maybe she should apologize.

Since she was a little girl, it’s been drilled into Amy’s (Schumer) head by her rascal of a dad (Colin Quinn) that monogamy isn’t realistic. Now a magazine writer, Amy lives by that credo—enjoying what she feels is an uninhibited life free from stifling, boring romantic commitment—but in actuality, she’s kind of in a rut.

When she finds herself starting to fall for the subject of the new article she’s writing, a charming and successful sports doctor named Aaron Conners (Bill Hader), Amy starts to wonder if other grown-ups, including this guy who really seems to like her, might be on to something.

TRAINWRECK opens in theaters on July 17.

Silent WWI Film – VERDUN, VISIONS OF HISTORY Screens at Webster University Feb. 15th

Verdun-560

There nothing better than seeing silent films with live music, especially in the cozy confines of Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 E. Lockwood in Webster Groves). This Sunday, February 15th, at 7pm, Webster University, in conjunction with Cinema St. Louis, will screen the 1927 French film VERDUN, VISIONS OF HISTORY from director Léon Poirier accompanied by live music from pianist Hakim Bentchouala-Golobitch. Admission is FREE.

Because of the political, social, economic and cultural impact it generated worldwide, the First World War is a singular event in the history of mankind. With 4.4 million soldiers mobilized and a financial  contribution of 500 billion today, the United States played a major role in the Great War and the victory of  the Triple Entente. The long French-American friendship was strengthened by this conflict.

verdun_if_english-1

Since September 2014, as part of the worldwide commemoration of the centenary of the First World War, the Cultural Service at the Consulate General of France in Chicago, in partnership with Midwest US partner institutions, is organizing a series of events aimed at raising general public awareness about the key issues of the First World War.In that framework, the Cultural Service at the Consulate of France in Chicago has partnered with local institutions to present the Midwest tour of the ciné-concert VERDUN, VISIONS OF HISTORY at Webster University in partnership with Cinema St. Louis. The screening will be presented with live piano accompaniment by internationally acclaimed French composer and pianist Hakim Bentchouala-Golobitch, who plays the original score by André Petiot.

verdun2

VERDUN, VISIONS OF HISTORY (1927) was directed by pioneering director and WWI veteran Léon Poirier (French, 1884–1968) about one of the most devastating battles of World War I—the Battle of Verdun in 1916. The Midwest tour was made possible thanks to a grant from the Institut français and the Mission du Centenaire 1914-1918 in Paris in partnership with the Cinémathèque de Toulouse and the Cultural Service at the Consulate General of France in Chicago.

verdun-disc-12

On the occasion of the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the armistice, French director and WWI veteran Leon Poirier meticulously reconstructed on the original site the great facts of the Battle of Verdun, in which more than 200,000 died between February and October 1916.

verdun-disc-10

Conceived as a pacifist work, juxtaposing news images, fight scenes of great documentary realism, and fiction, Poirier re-created the horrendous battle between French and German troops, and chronicled the ferocity of the war and its tremendous human toll. Most of the actors in the film were themselves war veterans, including Marechal Philippe Petain, and Poirier seamlessly meshed documentary footage with his re-enactments. The film has rarely been seen in recent years as most copies of the original silent version were lost during World War II. Some 50 years later, an original print was located in Moscow – it had been stolen from France by the Nazis and then retrieved by the Russians at the end of the war. It was restored in 2006 by La Cinémathèque de Toulouse at L’immagine Ritrovata’s lab (Bologna, Italy) with the support of the Groupama Gan Foundation for Cinema.

Director Léon Poirier is one of the most original post-World War I French directors, best known for his silent films from 1913 onwards. He directed some 25 films between 1913 and 1949. His most famous film today is his drama-documentary depicting the World War I Battle of Verdun.  He began his career in the world of theater. After a serious accident and bankruptcy, Poirier was hired by Léon Gaumont to direct films. The aspiring filmmaker went on to direct five features before the breakout of WWI. Despite being exempted from military service, he voluntarily joined the army, where he became a lieutenant. After the war, he decided to devote himself fully to cinema. Under the leadership of Gaumont, the young director directed fictions before turning to documentaries like Black Journey (1926), which describes the great expedition organized by the automaker Citroën in Central Africa, La Croisière Jaune (1933), and Brazza ou l’épopée du Congo (1940).

An original orchestral musical score composed by French composer André Petiot was played at Verdun, Visions of History’s premiere at the Opera Garnier on November 8, 1928. Reduced to a piano score later, the original score was found by the Cinémathèque de Toulouse at the National Library of France, illustrated with all the original intertitles of the film.

Born in Algiers, Pianist Hakim Bentchouala-Golobitch began his musical studies in France. He received a piano gold medal at the CNR of Toulouse and worked in Paris and New York. A graduate of international competitions, he specializes in early French music but also works with contemporary composers. Invited by many national and international festivals, Bentchouala-Golobitch gives solo recitals and performs in chamber music and orchestral settings. After learning the bandoneon, Bentchouala-Golobitch also gives many concerts with the tango nuevo quintet Hora Cero and the Tango Elan quartet. He also attended a theatrical training Comedia and initiated a pianist acting career. He composed and performed the music for many silent films, including Louis Feuillade’s Judex, Jacques Feyder’s Gribiche, Harold Lloyd’s Safety Last and Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg’s New Babylon.

Le Centre Francophone at Webster University promotes French and Francophone culture in St. Louis, which has a strong French heritage. Made possible by the Jane and Bruce Robert endowment, the Centre sponsors cultural events, invites writers and scholars, and works closely with the Cultural Service at the Consulate General of France in Chicago, the AATF, and the Francophile associations in Missouri.

The Webster University Film Series, housed in the School of Communications, is the Midwest’s premier hosting venue for American and foreign films. The Series is host to speakers and visiting artists who address the pertinent issues in films presented. In an effort to further integrate film with education, the Film Series provides workshops with artists and experts.

Disney Debuts a Second Trailer for CINDERELLA

CINDERELLA

Watch the brand new trailer for Disney’s CINDERELLA.

The story of CINDERELLA follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new Stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family.

Soon, she is forced to become their servant, disrespected, covered in ashes and spitefully renamed Cinderella. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her, and she continues to remain positive, determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.”

When Ella meets a dashing stranger in the woods, unaware that he is really the Prince (Richard Madden) and not merely Kit, an apprentice at the palace, she believes she has finally found a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the King (Derek Jacobi) summons all maidens in the kingdom to attend a royal ball at the palace, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit. Alas, her Stepmother forbids her to attend and callously destroys her dress.

CINDERELLA

Meanwhile, the calculating Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgård) devises a plan to thwart the Prince’s hopes of reuniting with Ella and enlists the support of the devious Stepmother. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand. Soon, a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin, a few mice and a magic wand, changes Cinderella’s life forever.

A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, CINDERELLA brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually-dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Kenneth Branagh (“Thor,” “Hamlet”) and starring two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine,” “Elizabeth”), Lily James (“Downton Abbey”), Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) and Academy Award nominee Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech,” “Alice in Wonderland”), “Cinderella” is produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Elysium”), Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1”) and David Barron (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”) with Tim Lewis (“Edge of Tomorrow”) serving as executive producer. FRANKENSTEIN VS THE MUMMY – The DVD Review

fvm8

Review by Sam Moffitt

When I was a kid I loved the monster mash ups that Universal made during the end of their run of classic monster movies. In fact the very first Universal Monster movie I ever got to see was HOUSE OF DRACULA, which featured Lon Chaney’s Wolfman, John Carradine’s Dracula, Glenn Strange’s version of Frankenstein’s Monster plus a mad scientist and a hunchbacked nurse.

Many times over the years those classic monsters have been put through their paces in one form or another, in different configurations. Film makers as diverse as Paul Naschy, Jess Franco, Al Adamson and Ed Wood have thrown together two or more of the classic monsters from Hollywood’s golden age, usually to mixed results. The ultimate monster mash up, in my opinion, is Fred Dekker’s MONSTER SQUAD, one of my favorite movies of all time.

fvm5

FRANKENSTEIN VS THE MUMMY is a brand new production pitting Frankenstein’s Monster against…The Mummy? To their credit the film makers put forth a story line that would bring these two creatures together. On the same college campus are Victor Frankenstein (Max Rhyser) doing what Frankenstein’s always do, sewing together body parts and trying to bring the dead back to life. It’s never made clear, by the way, just who in the lineage of the Frankenstein family this Victor is, a great grandson? Cousin? Great nephew?

No matter, of course he brings the dead back to life, but this Victor is not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer. He uses the brain of his flunky (Robert McNaughton) who has sworn to kill him, apparently not realizing that brain will know who he is and putting his own life in danger.

fvm7

On the same campus is a team of archeologists, including Ashton Leigh as Nailah Kalil, who also is the love interest for Victor Frankenstein, who have a Mummy just waiting to come back to demonic life. A little blood and the right incantations and this Mummy is up and walking, like Mummy’s always do “You should have seen his face!”

The final show down is about what you would expect, I don’t like to give out spoilers but does anybody think the Mummy, made of cob webs and dust, could possibly stand up against Frankenstein’s Monster?

It is nice to see a new movie that tries it’s best to bring the old Monsters back. In a nod to current trends in horror movies both Frankenstein’s Monster and the Mummy have a nasty habit of punching into people’s torsos, pulling out their internal organs and slinging them around the room. Much carnage and mayhem occurs as a result. The gore effects are actually quite good, H.G. Lewis would be impressed!

fvm6

This Frankenstein’s Monster not only can talk right after his revival he likes to eat, drink beer and smoke cigarettes. When the big show down finally happens this monster takes one look at the Mummy and says “What the fuck?!?”  FRANKENSTEIN VS THE MUMMY could have used a lot more of that humor, trust me, it’s a nice moment and there aren’t many here. This movie takes itself way too seriously, which can be a handicap when a horror movie is not very scary.

At one point Victor tells his creature that he knows he has vocal cords because “I sewed them in there.” Which may or not be a reference to I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN. Again more of that sensibility would have helped.

I hate to put down anybody’s film, especially low budget, independent, productions like this, but Frankenstein versus the Mummy is just not very special. The digital photography is fine, all the actors are actually quite good, especially Ashton Leigh who brings a lot of energy and sincerity to the part of the young archeologist, maybe more than the production calls for. One exception is Boomer Tibbs (really!) as Professor Walton, who is taken over by the Mummy’s mind control early on. I don’t know where Mr. Tibbs came from but he is one of the most annoying actors I have ever witnessed. And I have watched entire movies starring Charles Grodin!

fvm3

Frankenstein versus the Mummy is a cut above Al Adamson’s DRACULA VS FRANKENSTEIN, but then my Mom’s home movies are cut above Dracula versus Frankenstein!

This production never really catches that spark of ingenuity or inspiration that will make a low budget horror movie stand out from the crowd. If you read Rue Morgue, Videoscope, Horror Hound or any other magazine devoted to horror movies you’ll know that dozens of these low budget horror movies are released direct to video every month.

fvm4

Although the concept of pitting disparate monsters together is intriguing. How about Dracula versus the Creature from the Black Lagoon? Dracula takes a Florida vacation and something awful comes up out of the hot tub? Or The Wolfman versus the Phantom of the Opera? Larry Talbot is not only a werewolf he is a pretty good tenor with the Paris Opera and…oh the hell with it!

The only extras are a couple of previews, one for a horror comedy called WOLF COP actually looks very funny, and a commentary by writer/director Leone and the cinematographer.
