Harry Lime and the Restored THE THIRD MAN Opens in St. Louis

“Don’t be so gloomy. After all it’s not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love – they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!”

The restored, 4k update of THE THIRD MAN opens Friday, August 7th in St. Louis at Landmark’s Plaza Frontenac Theater

Roger Ebert called Harry Lime, the character played by Orson Welles in the 1949 classic THE THIRD MAN, his favorite screen villain of all time. Fittingly, he gets one of the great movie character introductions — an unforgettable one involving a doorway, a cat, and a sudden beam of light. There’s a reason that the only Academy Award won by THE THIRD MAN, one of the most beloved films of all time, went to Robert Krasker for cinematography – this night-shrouded mystery is visually eye-popping and the picture quality of director Carol Reed’s masterpiece is one of its most essential attributes.
thid-Man-5
Taking place in Vienna post WWII, THE THIRD MAN follows pulp novelist Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) on a trip to meet his friend Harry Lime (Welles) in Vienna, only Holly soon learns that Harry has died in an accident outside his apartment. Looking for answers, Holly discovers that there’s more to it than he realized and that Harry might not have been the person he thought he was. Trevor Howard and Alida Valli co-star as Maj. Calloway, who leads the investigation into the truth of Lime’s death and Anna, Harry’s former lover whom Holly falls for.
thirdmqn2
Darkness pervades nearly every scene as Holly inches closer to the truth. Coupled with Reed’s keen eye for dramatic camera angles, THE THIRD MAN maintains suspense throughout, from its opening to the famous final sewer sequence. THE THIRD MAN won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the British Film Academy’s best British film award and an Academy Award for Robert Krasker’s cinematography. Anton Karas’ score was played entirely on a zither, and ‘Harry Lime’s Theme’ was the most popular international title in 1950. Karas’ music was so famous, he opened a nightclub in Vienna called, naturally, The Third Man in 1954, and played his famous music there until 1966. Harry Lime was so memorable that Welles reprised him in radio shows — there was even a television show in the late ‘50s in which Lime (played by Michael Rennie) was the hero who made money dealing art and solving crime.

St. Louis-area fans of THE THIRD MAN are in for a treat as the new, 4K restoration of the film opens August 7th at Landmark’s Plaza Frontenac Theater. THE THIRD MAN spent decades in the public domain and many film buffs grew up watching it in tattered 16mm prints and fuzzy VHS transfers. I got to see this new hi-def, polished THE THIRD MAN on the big screen last week at a sneak and it was like seeing it for the first time. This is one of those classics that if you haven’t ever seen, it’s always the right time to watch. Or in this case, catch it on the big screen looking better than ever before. THE THIRD MAN is the best movie in town.

Z FOR ZACHARIAH Soundtrack From Composer Heather McIntosh Available Digitally August 28; On CD Sept. 4

ZForZachariah

Varèse Sarabande will release the Z FOR ZACHARIAH – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally August 28 and on CD on September 4, 2015.

The album features the original music composed by Heather McIntosh (COMPLIANCE, MANSON FAMILY VACATION).

“This is my second time working with Craig Zobel, so our director-composer language is pretty well developed,” explained McIntosh. “With our last collaboration (COMPLIANCE), the ensemble was super minimal, super biting, but minimal. This time we wanted to push ourselves with the score and it’s thematic development. Really go for it, you know? Though it is a chamber work, we wanted the sound to be full and orchestral.”

McIntosh had the opportunity to write for organ in a scene where Margot Robbie’s character plays the instrument on screen. “We knew that we needed to get the tone of this right. It needed to feel like a timeless hymn and also be a defining theme for Ann. I started working on this after reading an early draft of the script, long before the film was shot,” McIntosh described.

Before Heather McIntosh composed her first movie score, she was already leaving a permanent mark in the music scene. She toured with Lil’ Wayne, played bass for Gnarls Barkley, created music with indie bands like Animal Collective, Norah Jones, and St. Vincent, and has performed on stage with a variety of artists, such as Bright Eyes, of Montreal and Cat Power. An indie rocker at heart, she collaborated with the Elephant 6 Collective on various projects.

Heather’s first two feature-length narrative films were accepted into the Sundance Film Festival - in 2012 COMPLIANCE (directed by Craig Zobel) and then again in 2013 THE RAMBLER (directed by Calvin Lee Reeder, co-composed with Scott Honea and Jed Maheu). She was one of only four women who made the Academy Awards shortlist of composers for Best Original Score for the 2013 Awards for her score to COMPLIANCE, which was included in the “Best Scores of 2012” by Film Music Magazine and “Top 10 Film Scores” by Sound on Sight. TheNew York Times cited her score as “ominous, cellodriven…plucks our nerves and stirs our stomachs.”

In the wake of a disaster that wipes out most of civilization, Z for Zachariah is about when a young woman who believes she is the last human on Earth meets a dying scientist searching for survivors. Their relationship becomes tenuous when another male survivor appears. As the two men compete for the woman’s affection, their primal urges begin to reveal their true nature.

“This work has a very pastoral tone, even though we are depicting the end of the world, it takes place in the only part of the world unaffected by the apocalypse,” said McIntosh. “Along with lush chamber strings and horns, there is also an subtle underlying tension developed by the use of electronic and acoustic manipulated sounds.”

Roadside Attractions presents Z FOR ZACHARIAH in theaters August 28, 2015.

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, facing his most blisteringly impossible mission yet, in director Christopher McQuarrie’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION.

The deep-cover espionage agency known as the IMF has been under fire, but now it faces total disbandment, even as the most harrowing threat yet known to the free world lies in the shadows. That threat is The Syndicate, an impenetrable, exquisitely-trained group of renegade spies who have left behind their countries for an agenda all their own – an agenda intent on destabilizing the very foundations of civilization. The Syndicate has long been rumored to be just a wild-eyed myth among spies. But Ethan Hunt has just uncovered the unwelcome reality that this rogue nation is not only real but a ticking time bomb about to detonate worldwide if he doesn’t act. The CIA doesn’t buy it. His own team is under threat. Yet, Ethan will never turn his back on the highest stakes.

Every quality that has made Hunt indispensable is tested at once as he faces the ultimate nemesis: his ability to move deliberately in heart-stopping circumstances, his finesse travelling glamorous global locales, his desire to see evil punished and good prevail. From Vienna to Casablanca, from the skin of an in-flight military aircraft to the underwater depths, Hunt will go to every extreme to counter the greatest danger he’s faced in a career built on it. But most of all, he will attempt to do the one thing he has found truly matters: maintain his loyalty to his friends and the idea that might be able to outsmart the impossible.

Reteaming with Cruise as Hunt’s fellow agents are Jeremy Renner as William Brandt; Simon Pegg as whiz-kid Benji; and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell. Joining the action anew are Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson (“Hercules”) as the mysterious Ilsa Faust; Sean Harris (“Prometheus”) as Solomon Lane and three-time Golden Globe winner Alec Baldwin as CIA Director Alan Hunley.

The film is rated PG 13

Tommy Wiseau at The Tivoli in St. Louis – WAMG Coverage of THE ROOM

Why was there a run on plastic spoons at St. Louis-area grocery stores this weekend?
Because Tommy was in town!
Why were there thousands of plastic spoons flying through the air in the Tivoli’s main screen over the weekend?
Because Tommy was in town!
Why were grown men in tuxedos throwing a football from three feet away in the Tivoli’s lobby?
Because Tommy was in town!

tw12-560

Who was that strange man with the sunglasses, odd accent and black stringy hair that everyone was crowded around? Why that was none other than Tommy Wiseau of course, the amazing triple-threat talent writer/director/star of THE ROOM  and he was in St. Louis over the weekend for midnight screenings Friday and Saturday nights. Both shows were sell-outs at $15 a seat and the line to meet and greet Tommy extended far down Delmar. Tommy was selling THE ROOM T-shirts, DVD’s, Johnny Bobble-head dolls, posters, and plush Dogeee toys. They were most reasonably priced and came with autographs so it’s not surprising that everyone wanted something. The star didn’t want anyone missing out so they accommodated the entire line, which pushed the event back far past midnight, but everyone was having such fun and no one seemed to mind that the film didn’t start until 1:30am. Before the screening, there was a Q&A moderated by Tom Stockman (aka: Me) featuring questions from audience members who lined up at the microphone. Nobody kept their stupid comments in their pocket! Most of Tommy’s answers to their questions were ridiculous but then, this is Tommy Wiseau we’re talking about. He’s a clueless genius and that was proven with a pre-show that featured a screening of the pilot episode of Neighbors, his cable show. Neighbors was supposed to be funny, but was so not funny that it became funny. Does that make any sense?

Here’s a trailer for Neighbors:
