Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse: “Godzilla II: King of the Monsters,” an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.
The film was directed by Michael Dougherty (“Krampus”), and stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “The Conjuring” films), and Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai”) and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), both reprising their “Godzilla” roles; Kyle Chandler (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Manchester by the Sea”); Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”) in her feature film debut; Bradley Whitford (“Get Out”); Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s “Silicon Valley”); Charles Dance (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”); O’Shea Jackson Jr. (“Straight Outta Compton”); Aisha Hinds (“Star Trek Into Darkness”); and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Dougherty directed from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The film was produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers, Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, with Zach Shields, Barry H. Waldman, Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers, and Alexandra Mendes and Jay Ashenfelter co-producing for Legendary.
Behind the scenes, Dougherty’s creative team included director of photography Lawrence Sher, whose past credits include “War Dogs” and “Godzilla,” for which he handled additional photography; production designer Scott Chambliss (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”); editors Roger Barton (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the “Transformers” films), Oscar nominee Richard Pearson (“United 93,” “Kong: Skull Island”), and Bob Ducsay (“Godzilla,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”); costume designer Louise Mingenbach (the “X-Men” and “Hangover” films); and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (“Godzilla,” “Ghost in the Shell,” and part of the Oscar-winning team behind “Life of Pi”).

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer and teaser poster for DARK PHOENIX. Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain, DARK PHOENIX arrives in theaters everywhere February 14, 2019.
In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
So X-Men: Dark Phoenix comes out in February. Great. I have to say, I love the X-Men, and have enjoyed them in the movies. Even if they are telling tales that are 30 years old, playing mix and match with who was actually where and when. X-Men First Class was a great re-telling of the first X-Men, but as any Marvel fanboy (or girl) knows, most of the ACTUAL first class were not in that movie. But it was a good movie, focusing more on the budding friendship between Charles Xavier and Eric Lensher (Magneto) and so I figured it was forgivable that they threw so much at the audience at once, expecting the action to be a good replacement for character development. And now, they give us yet another re-telling of the Dark Phoenix tale. The same one they told before, in X-Men 3. Different Jean, same tale. It’s a good tale, an important tale, but they told it once already, and in the case of the new version, being told in the same (semi-same?) continuity. My chief complaints are these: 1. Stop telling 30 + year old stories, and if you insist on doing it, 2. Keep the characters that were integral to the storyline IN the story. In this case, Wolverine. Yes, yes, I get it, Jackman was great, but he’s done. Understandably. He did the role justice, he played the character well, despite being a full foot taller than the character is in the comics. But now it’s time to bring in new blood. There a many fine young actors that could fill those shoes, and the studio could take a chance on one closer to the character; small, thick, and really brutal.
They won’t, but they could. They won’t because it looks like the new owners, Disney, will take the helm, and probably shake the tree. They will likely keep the parts they like, and try to give new life to this 18 year old franchise. A new Logan, new cast completely in fact. They will hopefully keep a good core team, and introduce some of the really exotic mutants that the team has had through the years. The mutant massacre in the tunnels beneath New York City was a great story line. Throw in Gambit (NOT with Channing Tatum, please), a more believable Sabretooth. Or any of the many storylines that they’ve had in the decades that there’ve been X-Men. One of the defining tales of the X-Men was the introduction of the new members taking over for the old, rescuing them from the giant mutant Krakatoa. This took the team from Cyclops, Jean, Angel, Beast and Iceman, and made it more multicultural, adding color and international flavor bringing in Colossus from Russia, Storm from Africa, Nightcrawler from Germany, Banshee from Ireland opened the door to a much larger world of characters, from that point forward bringing in more women, mutants of color, and enriched the storylines beyond the 2 dimensional comic props of the past.
Disney has a real opportunity here to expand the X-Men universe, grow it, bring in new fans and solidify it’s relationship with the old diehards. If we can just get past another damned Dark Phoenix story.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the final trailer and cool character poster for the highly anticipated FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD.
The movie is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™.
At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
The film features an ensemble cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. The cast also includes, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, and Poppy Corby-Tuech.
“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. The film is produced by David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.
Slated for release on November 16, 2018, the film will be distributed worldwide in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
Check out a brand-new trailer for RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET, introducing new characters, including the fierce and fun crew of racers from online racing game Slaughter Race. Ali Wong lends her voice to Felony, Timothy Simons voices Butcher Boy, Glozell Green brings Little Debbie to life and Hamish Blake provides the voice of Pyro. Also new to the roster of characters is Double Dan, the proprietor of the dark web’s apothecary. From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.
Joining the all-star cast are Unbreakable’s Spencer Treat Clark and Charlayne Woodard, who reprise their roles as Dunn’s son and Price’s mother, as well as Golden Globe Award winner Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story series).
This riveting culmination of his worldwide blockbusters is produced by Shyamalan and Blumhouse Production’s Jason Blum, who also produced the writer/director’s previous two films for Universal.
