DARK SHADOWS First Cast Photo

Hey horror hounds! Courtesy of our friends at Entertainment Weekly here’s our first look at the cast of Tim Burton’s big screen version of the small screen classic, DARK SHADOWS. Now this is not the first time the Collins clan have made it to the movies. In 1970 MGM released HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS based on the daytime drama and starring most of the TV cast. NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS followed.

Here’s a bit of background on the cult favorite. Dan Curtis (BURNT OFFERINGS) created the “soap opera ” which debuted on ABC-TV in 1966. The main focus of the first episodes was the arrival of Victoria Winters in Collinsport, ME and her interactions with the secretive Collins family. The program languished at the bottom of the ratings until Curtis, in order to save the show from cancellation, decided to take a gamble and introduce a vampire into the Gothic series. Barnabas Collins as played by veteran stage actor Jonathan Frid caused a sensation on the daytime TV landscape. Youngsters flocked to the show, turning the mature Frid into a teen idol (featured many times on the cover of Tiger Beat and other magazines) and giving the producer a merchandising bonanza. Board games, model kits, comic books, paperback novels, and posters flooded the stores. There was even a comic strip in daily newspapers! A record album of the show’s eerie score by Robert Colbert was a huge hit and spawned a top 40 single, “Quentin’s Theme”. Unfortunately not even the additon of witches, werewolves, and other ghoulies could keep the mania going and the final episode aired in 1971.

Ah, but like any good vampire Barnabas did return. The show was soon syndicated to local stations. Devoted fans staged conventions featuring reunions of the cast members. Innovation produced new comic books in 1991. NBC revived the show as a prime time hour long drama in early 1991 while Warner Brothers TV produced a new two hour pilot film that never aired.

And now, long time fan Tim Burton is taking this Gothic epic to the big screen. Lets’ take a look at the residents of Collinwood. Starting from the far left is Helena Bonham Carter (THE KING”S SPEECH) as Dr. Julia Hoffman, psychiatrist, friend of the Collins family and (in the TV show) an aide of Barnabas. Next is Chloe Maretz (LET ME IN) as Carolyn Stoddard followed by Eva Green (CASINO ROYALE) as Angelique Bouchard, the witch who cursed Barnabas. The young lad is the disturbed David Collins played by Gulliver McGrath with his governess Victoria Winters played by Bella Heathcote (she’s also the spitting image of Barnabas’s long lost love Josette). Speaking of Barnabas, in the center is Johnny Depp (THE TOURIST) as the centuries old vampire. Seated is the family housekeeper Mrs. Johnson played by Ray Shirley. Next is Collinwood groundskeeper Willie (yup, Groundskeeper Willie!) Loomis played by Jackie Earle Haley (WATCHMEN) who releases Barnabas and soon becomes his ‘ familiar’. He’s followed by Roger Collins played by Jonny Lee Miller (TRAINSPOTTING) and family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard played by Michelle Pfieffer (BATMAN RETURNS).

Synopsis:

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

This group (along with horror film icon Christopher Lee and several original TV cast members) will welcome moviegoers back to Collinwood (cue the cascading waves and Colbert theme) when Warner Brothers releases the film on May 11, 2012

Sundance: Our 16 Most Anticipated Films

Our coverage for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival starts in 2 days and one of the most important articles we can write to inform everyone about Sundance is our most anticipated films list. This list was super hard to narrow down, there are SO many films I am looking forward to at Sundance this year. My first list was called “Sundance 2010: Our 112 Most Anticipated Films” but Jeremy said that was a bit of overkill, so we narrowed it down to these 16. Check them out below:

16. SYMPATHY FOR DELICIOUS:

Mark Ruffalo makes his directorial debut with SYMPATHY FOR DELICIOUS which is a film about a former DJ who is paralyzed, turns to faith healing and starts to cure the sick…except he cant cure himself. I love this plot synopsis, not sure how much I love that Orlando Bloom stars, but we will see. It also features Ruffalo, Laura Linney, and Juliette Lewis. It has a solid cast, and a solid plot, lets see if Bloom can deliver some good acting, and Ruffalo can pull it all together as a first time director.

15. SKATELAND:

First off let me say that I absolutely love movies that are based in the 80’s, maybe it has something to do with my Patrick Swayze obsession but I just cant get enough of them. I was stoked to see another 80’s film at this years festival because I fell in love with ADVENTURELAND at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. SKATELAND is from first time writers/director Anthony Burns so we have no idea what to expect but an 80’s film that revolves around a roller rink…count me in.

14. BLUE VALENTINE:

Independent films about two people falling in love starring incredibly gifted actors. What more do you want at Sundance? BLUE VALENTINE, with Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams leading the charge, is definitely one of those films. You can just feel the power seeping off of this movie. With an award-winning screenplay (it won the 2006 Chrysler Film Project, which resulted in $1 million in funding) in tow, BLUE VALENTINE looks to be a very powerful film worth checking out.

13. DADDY LONGLEGS:

Movies like DADDY LONGLEGS are the reason I go to Sundance. Little indie nuggets that I absolutely fall in love with. Not saying that is always the case, but after watching this trailer I definitely think this film has what it takes to steal my heart(awww). More so because I can relate to being divorced and not getting to spend as much time with your kids as you would like. Be on the lookout for this film.

12. I’M HERE:

I pretty much work under the assumption of “Spike Jonze is involved, it has to be great”, so even though we know almost NOTHING about this short of his that is premiering at Sundance…you usually cant go wrong with something of his which is why its sitting pretty in our most anticipated films. Photo credit goes to /Film who get the exclusive for this.

11. TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL:

A horror comedy starring my twin brother, Tyler Labine (OK, we just look A LOT alike) and Alan Tudyk as two hillbillies who are constantly in the wrong place at the wrong time. I can easily see this film being the BLACK DYNAMITE of this year’s festival. I have a feeling its going to do very well in the midnight screenings, and with a good crowd this movie will be a riot. Lets not even mention how much I’ve missed Labine since REAPER ended.

10. THE TILLMAN STORY:

The documentaries featured every year at the Sundance Film Festival are always worth watching out for, and 2010 seems to be no exception. Take THE TILLMAN STORY, for instance, an emotionally engaging story that needed to be told brought to life by powerful interviews from Pat Tillman’s friends and family. This film, from director Amir Bar-Lev (MY KID COULD PAINT THAT) looks to be not only one of the better documentaries at this years Sundance, it looks to be one of the most moving films of the entire festival.

09. RESTREPO:

Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington packed up their stuff and headed to Afghanistan armed with video camera’s. They went into the heat of the war with Second Platoon of Battle Company—part of the Second Battalion of the U.S. army’s 503rd Infantry Regiment (airborne). What they returned with is a stunning first hand account of what the soldiers are going through on a daily basis over there. They fronted their own money to make a feature length film out of the footage and RESTREPO is born.

From everything I have heard about this film, it will bring you to tears at how real and in the face of action everything is. CANT WAIT to see this.

08. THE VIOLENT KIND:

I haven’t seen anything The Butcher Brothers have done previously, but I am excited as hell for THE VIOLENT KIND. The plot goes a little something like this…one night at a secluded farmhouse deep in the Northern California woods, a small group of hardened young bikers and their girlfriends are tormented when one of the girls becomes savagely possessed, and a gang of “Rockabillies” seemingly from the 1950’s descends upon them to collect what is growing inside her.

Lets also not fail to mention the film stars the gorgeous Tiffany Shepis…so you will probably see me at every screening. I am only half kidding.

07. ENTER THE VOID:

Let’s be blatantly honest. You either love or you loath Gaspar Noe’s first endeavor into feature film making, IRREVERSIBLE. If you are anything like me (I think the film is a cinematic masterpiece), you are frothing at the mouth to see what Noe has in store for his follow-up. Jump to 2010’s Sundance Film Festival where ENTER THE VOID makes its North American debut. It is already creating controversy and being called “stunning” and “ambitious.” Whatever you think of Noe or his previous work, this latest film is sure to be anything but boring.

06. FROZEN:

Okay, if Ryan Reynolds stuck in a coffin for 94 minutes didn’t do it for you, how about Emma Bell, Shawn Ashmore, and Kevin Zegers stuck in a ski lift for 90 minutes or so?  That’s the premise of HATCHET director Adam Green’s latest thriller.  Like OPEN WATER in -10, FROZEN centers on three skiers who are stranded hundreds of feet up in the air after their lift stops and everyone else goes home.  We ran the trailer for this a few weeks back, but this seems more like a film that you want to go into (pardon the pun) cold.  Nonetheless, early word from Butt-Numb-A-Thon is that this film is pretty thrilling, and I’m always going to be curious to see what Green has in store for us next.

05. CYRUS:

The Duplass Brothers are 2 of my favorite people in the business, and I am glad they are finally getting a shot at a big(ger) budget film with more well known actors (not that I don’t absolutely LOVE Greta Gerwig!) and being distributed by a studio that knows exactly how to handle the film. Mix that with the fact it stars Jonah Hill, John C. Reilly, and Marisa Tomei… this film is an almost guaranteed hit. Actually I am counting on it!

PS: If you are going to see this one, you better get tickets ASAP because it only plays 3 times at Sundance.

04. THE COMPANY MEN:

Just looking at the cast list for THE COMPANY MEN should have most of you ecstatic to see it, as it features Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Costner, Chris Cooper, Maria Bello, Rosemary DeWitt, and Craig T. Nelson.  That’s quite a lineup, particularly when you consider writer/director John Wells is making his feature film debut directly behind the camera on this one.  The film sounds like UP IN THE AIR by way of TRAFFIC, as it centers on three men trying to cope after going through corporate downsizing.  Seems like the film is perfect fodder for a few of these actors to really show their stuff and possibly earn a couple of Oscar nominations come 2011.  We’ll have to wait and see on that.  For now, we’re just excited enough to be seeing it next week.

03. HOWL:

James Franco is known for comedy, but for any of you that watched MILK knows the guy definitely has some incredible acting chops. Add in the fact that he will be playing one of my favorite poets Allen Ginsberg and this film is set to be one of the best films at Sundance. That is all that needs to be said about this film so I will leave you with a portion of the Ginsberg poem the film is based around:

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
              madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn
              looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly
connection to the starry dynamo in the machin-
              ery of night,
who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat
up smoking in the supernatural darkness of
cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities
              contemplating jazz,
who bared their brains to Heaven under the El and
saw Mohammedan angels staggering on tene-
              ment roofs illuminated...

02. HESHER:

Anything Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in is promptly thrown to near the top of my “most anticipated” list any more. He is, without a doubt, one of the best actors working today, and he’s only 29-years-old. As much as we love him in the lighter films a la (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, it is the darker films like BRICK and THE LOOKOUT that really pique our interest. HESHER is no exception, and, with a cast that also boasts Rainn Wilson, Natalie Portman, and Piper Laurie, it is easily one of the films at Sundance this year we cannot wait to feast our eyes on.

01. BURIED:

94 minutes of watching Ryan Reynolds trapped in a coffin. To some, this might sound like some sort of strange torture technique. To us, this sounds like an awesome premise for a suspenseful and even emotional movie. The early buzz on BURIED is that it is a highly intense film that leaves your claustrophobic inner child wanting to rush to the bright lobby of the theater. Reynolds is a very gifted actor, and it seems like it is dramatic roles like this that are sure to have him quickly breaking from the comedic and comic book roles he’s been handling until now.

So, thats the list. Sad and jealous that you arent going to be seeing these for a while? Well first off, I am sorry. Second off, I cant wait to rub it in at the pure awesomeness of all these films. Check out http://wearemoviegeeks.com/sundance for all of our festival coverage.

A first-time Sundancer’s guide to… Sundance.

A bunch of my good film blogging friends are going to Sundance this year for the very first time, and although I don’t mind answering their questions I figured if they are asking them… everyone else probably is too. So being the kind hearted movie blogger that I am, I have put together a list of questions and answers for you first timers out there.

Now, I am no expert. Unlike Neil from FilmSchoolRejects.com, Alex from FirstShowing.net and Pete from SlashFilm.com, last year was my very first year and I was scared to death of hitting the nasty bitter cold and unfamiliar territory all by myself. Luckily I had all of the guys mentioned before to hold my hand (I am only partially joking). Here are some of the questions/worries/scary parts for me last year.

  1. How will I get from the SLC Airport to my destination in Park City?
This was one of my biggest fears last year. Luckily the people at Sundance have already taken this into consideration and pointed me into the direction of Express Shuttle. I am pretty sure that I got to and from the airport for $35 but the price could have gone up this year. Check out their website to schedule or call the numbers below.
    (800) 397-0773
    (801) 596-1600 (in Salt Lake City)
    (435) 658-3444 (in Park City)
    http://www.xpressshuttleutah.com/
  2. How am I going to get around without a car?
Another big worry of mine…put your minds at ease. The Sundance film festival is above and beyond the easiest film festival to get around at due to all of the shuttle buses that run almost around the clock. Here is a map.
  3. Am I going to freeze to death?
This is a tough one. Apparently last year was unseasonably warm in Park City so I didn’t get a full taste of just how cold it can be. I will tell you that for the majority of the time there I work a lightweight jacket and was fine. I also sported gloves and a scarf most of the time as well. See here:

I would suggest bringing both your heaviest, warmest coat… and something that you wont sweat to death in, just in case.

  4. Where will I find the time to do work?
That all depends on how much work you want to get done. Last year I wrote about 30 reviews, did 4 interviews, did a daily recap and a couple of video blogs. There are a few badass spots that offer WiFi around Park City. I did the majority of my work sitting in the lobby of the Yarrow Hotel which is where a bunch of press screenings are held. Right across the street from there is a really great restaurant called Squatters that offers free WiFi, delicious food and some very cute waitresses great service. The Sundance HQ also offers free WiFi. Here is a photo of Neil and Pete doing some blogging inside Squatters:

You will probably find yourself writing while you are in line, in your seat before a film starts or the floor… seriously:

So, if you have a free minute, you are going to want to start typing up the 5 reviews of films you saw in the last 24 hours… before they are out of your mind completely.

  5. What if my laptop dies, gets broken, use it to block a punch from an angry publicist?
Well first, carry your power adapter with you everywhere. You can find somewhere to plug it in and charge even if its just for a few minutes. If it gets broken somehow well then sir I wish you luck… OK, only partially. At the Sundance HQ they have a bunch of computers setup
  6. Is my iPhone going to work this year?
HA. The great Sundance iPhone debacle. If it’s anything like last year, and I assume it will probably be even worse…you are going to be very frustrated with your lack of service. I suggest turning your 3G off and just dealing with the slower EDGE service. Lucky for me, I left the iPhone in the dust and am now using the Motorola Droid on Verizon… should see much better results.
  7. What about groceries?
I did a lot of shopping at Albertson’s which is in the same parking lot as the Yarrow hotel. You may be lucky enough to run into Mike Tyson like we did last year while your shopping for your hot pockets.
  8. How many celebrities will I run into?
I imagined Sundance to be completely filled to the brim with celebrities everywhere, just all hanging out on every street corner. Well that just isn’t the case. If you hang out on main street all day and all night you will definitely see a bunch…but if you are “working” and doing the press screening circuit then chances are your run in’s will be few and far between.

I am certain that there are thousands more, but those are the main ones I’ve gotten asked. If I didn’t answer your question here, hit me up in the comments section, email or twitter… or if you want an expert go talk to one of my good buddies listed above.

WAMG is hitting Sundance 2010. Here is what you can expect from us…

That’s right boys and girls, your favorite movie site (just play along) will be hitting the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. This will be our second year, but this time its not just Scott (me) going all by my lonesome. Jeremy and AJ Meadows will be along for the ride and you can expect some of the greatest festival coverage known to man. If Chuck Norris was to cover a film festival his coverage would somewhat resemble what we are going to be bringing you for the 2010 festival. If you don’t remember all of the great stuff from last year check it out here.

So, what will make this year so much better? Well, I am glad you asked. With 3 guys covering the festival we promise to at least double, if not triple the amount of films we covered last year. On top of that we will be handling red carpets, doing a ridiculous amount of interviews and daily video blogs.

  • 70-100 Films reviewed.
  • Daily Video Blogs.
  • More interviews.
  • Sundance on-site Podcasts.
  • Top films from each of us.
  • Live blogging events and parties.
  • and more stuff that I cant even figure out right now.

So boys and girls, starting January 20th (my birthday!) our coverage will officially begin. Check back soon…

PS: AJ and I are making a documentary about film bloggers/journos during the festival this year, so let the anticipation begin.
