Charlie Clouser’s Soundtrack For WAYWARD PINES Out On July 17

wp

In what’s become the best, and craziest, show this summer, Fox’s WAYWARD PINES has become must-see TV.

The intense episodes play out more like a movie and the soundtrack is haunting and other-worldly.

Lakeshore Records has announced it will release the WAYWARD PINES – Original Television Soundtrack digitally on July 17 and on CD July 24, 2015.  The album features the show’s original score by Charlie Clouser (SAW, Numb3rs).

“The main direction I received was that the score should help with the feeling that ‘something is not right’ in the town of Wayward Pines,” said Clouser. “For a while, we don’t know if Matt Dillon’s character is hallucinating, or maybe still in a coma and just dreaming, so the score needed to lean toward a ‘malfunctioning’ feel – that meant using sounds that are a little ‘out of whack’. As the series progresses, the score starts to get more and more intense – so we needed to keep raising the stakes while still being able to reference the themes and palette that we established right at the start.”

10-episode, intense psychological thriller WAYWARD PINES is brought to life by suspenseful storyteller M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs), and stars Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon (Crash) as a Secret Service agent on a mission to find two missing federal agents, whose investigation only turns up more questions.

“For Wayward Pines I tried to envision the whole ten-episode run as one long crescendo – like a big ‘wedge’ shape with the pointy end at the start of the series and a musical ‘cliff’ at the end,” described Clouser. “We start off small and get pretty epic by the time we approach the end, until there is a gigantic climax and we finally fall off that cliff – so that is a fundamental difference between a show like this with a finite number of episodes, and an open-ended series where you don’t know how long that wedge might last. I quite liked being able to plan ahead like this and make one long and hopefully coherent statement across the whole series.”

WAYWARD PINES airs Thursdays, 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT on FOX. The series was developed for television by Chad Hodge (The Playboy Club, Runaway) and executive-produced by Donald De Line (Green Lantern, The Italian Job), Ashwin Rajan (After Earth, Devil), Hodge and Shyamalan.  Hodge wrote and Shyamalan directed the premiere episode.

Marc Streitenfeld’s Soundtrack For Gil Kenan’s POLTERGEIST Available May 19

POLTERGEIST soundtrack

British director Gil Kenan proved his atmospheric take on the horror and fantasy genres with his movies Monster House and City of Ember. Now, with legendary filmmaker and producer Sam Raimi (Spiderman, Evil Dead, The Grudge), Kenan directs the remake of the classic 1982 horror movie POLTERGEIST.

For the soundtrack, available May 19 via Sony Classical, Kenan chose German film score composer Marc Streitenfeld, known for his collaborations with director Ridley Scott.

POLTERGEIST contemporizes the scary tale about a family – starring Sam Rockwell (Moon, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Cinderella Man, Rachel Getting Married) – whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces.

When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter (Kennedi Clements) captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.

Acknowledged for his ambitious and intelligent score for PROMETHEUS, as well as the multi-faceted soundtrack, THE GREY, Streitenfeld deployed his versatile composing talents once again, the Poltergeist soundtrack expertly captures the movie’s eerie mood. With hinted horror elements, creaky sound patterns and an overall twisted timbre, Streitenfeld manages to build up spine-chilling tension – a creepy, veritably haunting score.

After Streitenfeld relocated from Munich to Los Angeles, he started working as a musical assistant for composer Hans Zimmer and became a music editor and supervisor on the blockbusters Hannibal, Mission: Impossible II and Black Hawk Down.

At the request of Ridley Scott, Streitenfeld composed for A Good Year (2006), after acting as music supervisor on Scott’s 2005 film Kingdom of Heaven. He then went on to score all of Scott’s subsequent films to date. In 2007, Streitenfeld was nominated for a BAFTA award for American Gangster.

Ryan Gosling’s LOST RIVER Soundtrack From Composer Johnny Jewel Available March 30

LostRiver_Soundtrack

Performer/producer/visual artist and composer Johnny Jewel scores Warner Bros.’ thriller LOST RIVER, opening in theaters April 10, 2015.

Directed and written by Ryan Gosling, LOST RIVER is a dark fairy tale about love, family and the fight for survival in the face of danger starring Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes, and Ben Mendelsohn. The multi-talented Jewel provides a grainy analog synth score that is both emotive and haunting, setting the tone for film’s dreamlike setting.

The LOST RIVER soundtrack is available March 30th, 2015 on Jewel’s Italians Do It Better record label and will feature original tracks from the Chromatics, Desire, and Glass Candy.

In the virtually abandoned city of Lost River, a single mother of two (Hendricks) is led into a macabre underworld in her quest to save her childhood home and hold her family together.

Gosling had approached Johnny Jewel to score his directorial debut “Lost River” while it was still in the concept stage, convincing Jewel to do it after he completed the script.

“When Ryan e-mailed me the script my immediate feeling was that the whole film should be sonically immersed in metal and water. I started sending Ryan music in February of 2013 for his early trips to scout locations. Ryan and I live seven minutes away from one another, so we’d watch the film at his house at night, and then we’d drive over to my house and experiment with musical ideas in my studio,” said Jewel.

Gosling and Johnny Jewel met during Nicolas Winding Refn’s DRIVE, for which Jewel contributed additional music including his band Desire’s song “Under Your Spell.”

Jewel had previously scored Winding Refn’s film BRONSON starring Tom Hardy. Johnny Jewel is best known as known as a musical artist and producer behind the bands Chromatics, Desire, and Glass Candy. Jewel is also the president of the independent record label Italians Do It Better.

Composer Brian Tyler’s Score For FURIOUS 7 Available On March 31

Back Lot Music - Furious 7 Score

Back Lot Music will release the score soundtrack for FURIOUS 7, Universal Pictures’ upcoming action-thriller directed by James Wan and starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson on March 31, 2015, it was announced today. The FURIOUS 7 Original Motion Picture Score features new music by award-winning composer Brian Tyler.

FURIOUS 7 hits theaters nation-wide on April 3.

Tyler is a composer and conductor of more than 70 films and won Film Composer of the Year at the 2014 Cue Awards.  He has been the composer for three previous films in the FAST & FURIOUS franchise, having scored the box-office hits Fast Five, Fast & Furious and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift for director Justin Lin.  In 2010, Tyler arranged and conducted Jerry Goldsmiths’s film logo music for Universal Pictures and composed a theme for the 100-year anniversary of the studio, making him a valuable part of the Universal family.

Discussing his creation of the score for FURIOUS 7, Tyler commented: “It was a pleasure to collaborate with James [Wan] on FURIOUS 7, as he wanted the emotion of the themes to be the primary focus.  The music uses modern recording techniques, vintage modular synthesizers, mashed-up beats, drums and tweaked remix elements along with classic film scoring traditions including full orchestra, piano, voice and classical guitar.  I am so proud of the movie, and I dedicate the score to the memory of Paul Walker and all the joy he brought.”

Furious 7

In describing Tyler’s score for FURIOUS 7, Wan remarked, “Brian’s amazing score gave this movie life. He did an incredible job of crafting an electrifying score for the bombastic action moments, one that is balanced by the beautiful and emotional themes of the characters that underline the heart of this movie.”

Tyler won his first World Soundtrack Award in 2002 for Best New Film Composer of the Year.  He has received three Emmy Award nominations, 13 BMI Music Awards, five ASCAP Music Awards, and recently won 12 Goldspirit Awards, including Composer of the Year.  In addition, he was nominated for a 2014 BAFTA Games Award and was inducted into the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2010.

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Jordana Brewster return to form a furious team of seven family members united in purpose.  They are joined by Fast fan favorites Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black, as well as new additions to the ensemble including Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Nathalie Emmanuel, Djimon Hounsou, Ronda Rousey and Tony Jaa.

With FURIOUS 7, this crew heads across the globe for one last ride together in their most gravity-defying and emotional adventure to date.  And as they form a tighter band than ever: The Furious 7—Dom, Brian, Hobbs, Letty, Roman, Tej and Mia—they will face their greatest threat yet in places as far away as Abu Dhabi and Azerbaijan…and as familiar as the streets they call home.

CINDERELLA

The story of CINDERELLA follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new Stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family.

Soon, she is forced to become their servant, disrespected, covered in ashes and spitefully renamed Cinderella. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her, and she continues to remain positive, determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.”

When Ella meets a dashing stranger in the woods, unaware that he is really the Prince (Richard Madden) and not merely Kit, an apprentice at the palace, she believes she has finally found a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the King (Derek Jacobi) summons all maidens in the kingdom to attend a royal ball at the palace, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit. Alas, her Stepmother forbids her to attend and callously destroys her dress.

Meanwhile, the calculating Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgård) devises a plan to thwart the Prince’s hopes of reuniting with Ella and enlists the support of the devious Stepmother. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand. Soon, a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin, a few mice and a magic wand, changes Cinderella’s life forever.

The CINDERELLA original motion picture soundtrack will be available wherever music is sold on March 10, 2015.

The album is now available for pre-order at iTunes http://smarturl.it/cnsa1 and Amazon http://smarturl.it/cnsama1.

Composer Junkie XL Creates Score for Warner Bros. Thriller RUN ALL NIGHT

312855id1a_RunAllNight_FinalRated_27x40_1Sheet_6C.indd

Grammy nominated producer and composer Junkie XL provides the raw, gritty score for Warner Bros. crime thriller RUN ALL NIGHT starring Liam Neeson, Ed Harris, and Joel Kinnaman.

Directed by Jaume Collett-Sera, the film follows Brooklyn hit man Jimmy Conlon (Neeson), who finds himself haunted by the sins of his past when his estranged son becomes a target of his longtime best friend, mob boss Shawn Maguire (Harris).

The film opens in theaters nationwide March 13th, 2015. The RUN ALL NIGHT original motion picture soundtrack will be available on Water Tower Music on March 10th, 2015.

Junkie XL‘s recent credits include the box office hits DIVERGENT and 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE. Junkie XL’s upcoming projects include the highly anticipated MAD MAX: FURY ROAD in theaters on May 15.

He is also re-teaming with Oscar winning composer Hans Zimmer to score the upcoming film BATMAN v. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. Junkie XL will score the music for Batman with Zimmer composing the score for Superman in the film.

BatmanAffleck

Inspired by the film’s storyline before being brought on as the composer, Junkie XL created a 55 minute sketchbook of music that he envisioned for the movie. “First, Darren Higman (Vice President of Music at Warner Bros.) explained the story to me in detail. He did it so well that I got very excited and was inspired to start writing music for the movie. The suite became a musical sketchbook that I later could pull from. After five days of writing, I was able to see the film. Funny enough, it felt like all of the music I wrote would work very well for the film. When I met with the director, Jaume, and played the music for him, he was very excited. All of the main themes that I came up with ended up in the film,” explains Junkie XL. This sketchbook will be included as a bonus feature on the RUN ALL NIGHT soundtrack release.

Junkie XL musically approached the film as a character study, creating a layered score for Run All Night that goes beyond the traditional musical genre of the crime thriller. “I wanted to write music that was reflection of the psychological state of the characters as opposed to just the action on screen. The music needed to underscore the characters’ wide range of emotions. To accomplish this, I incorporated deep, brute feeling drums with cello solos,” explains Junkie XL. Channeling the classic “hit man” thrillers of the 60s and 70s, the composer didn’t want the score to overwhelm the action sequences. “There is a great chase scene in the film where I purposefully didn’t want to use any music. The action and sound effects drive the scene, so the score came in at the end of the sequence to put you inside of the character’s mental state in a way that is not typically explored in modern action films,” explained the composer.

RUN ALL NIGHT

Junkie XL (Tom Holkenborg) has built a reputation on musical experimentation. The Grammy-nominated multi-platinum selling producer and composer’s versatility puts him on the cutting edge of contemporary music, as well as at the vanguard of film composition.

Holkenborg’s music career began when he founded the industrial band NERVE, while producing bands like Sepultura and Fear Factory. Drawn by electronic breakbeats he became Junkie XL debuting with the album “Saturday Teenage Kick.” Junkie XL went on to produce five more albums while headlining shows worldwide. The producer/remixer scored a number 1 hit in 24 countries with his rework of Elvis Presley’s “A Little Less Conversation”. Following the success, Junkie XL collaborated with celebrated artists including Dave Gahan, Robert Smith, Chuck D, and remixed artists including Coldplay, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake.

Newman’s vibrant and inspirational score for THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, masterfully evokes the Indian musical textures and ensures an elegant and delightful musical journey.

“Tom’s ability to penetrate the soul of a film is unmatched; In the two Marigold films, Tom’s group of collaborators expanded to include some extraordinary Indian players and vocal soloists, creating a musical and cultural synthesis that has produced two ravishing and interlocking scores: atmospheric, surprising, thrilling, funny, haunting and entirely sui generis”, says director John Madden.

Now that The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is full up with its long-term residents, co-managers Muriel Donnelly (Maggie Smith) and Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) have a dream of expansion, and they’ve found just the place: The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. With plans underway, Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) venture into the Jaipur workforce, wondering where their regular breakfast dates will lead.  Meanwhile, Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) navigate the swirling waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two veryeligible suitors, and recent arrival Guy Chambers (Richard Gere) finds a muse in Sonny’s mother, Mrs Kapoor (Lillete Dubey) for his next novel. As his marriage to Sunaina (Tina Desai), the love of his life, quickly approaches, Sonny finds his plans for the new hotel making more claims on his time than he has available. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is Muriel, the keeper of everyone’s secrets. As the big day nears, family and guests alike find themselves swept up in the irresistible intoxication of an Indian wedding.

It’s a madcap musical with a princess who has sworn off love, a vulnerable villain, a slightly nutty Sugar Plum Fairy, a tenacious and big-hearted elf, a mischievous imp, and a knight who is no Prince Charming.

With Marius DeVries serving as musical director and soundtrack producer, the Strange Magic digital soundtrack from Buena Vista Records is now available at digital retail.

The physical CD will be available on Feb. 17. “Strange Magic” from Touchstone Pictures will be in theaters on Jan. 23, 2015.

“Strange Magic” welcomes an extraordinary roster of voice talent, including Alan Cumming (CBS’ “The Good Wife,” Broadway’s “Cabaret”) as Bog King, Evan Rachel Wood (“The Ides of March“) as feisty fairy Marianne, Elijah Kelley (“Hairspray,” “Lee Daniels’The Butler”) as lovelorn elf Sunny, newcomer Meredith Anne Bull as Marianne’s lovesick sister Dawn, Sam Palladio (ABC’s “Nashville“) as heartbreaker Roland, Kristin Chenoweth (Broadway’s “Wicked”) as the potion-making Sugar Plum Fairy, Maya Rudolph (“Big Hero 6,” “Bridesmaids”) as Bog’s mum Griselda, Alfred Molina (“Chocolat”) as the Fairy King, and Bob Einstein (HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Peter Stormare (“Fargo“) as Stuff and Thang, Bog’s loyal goblin assistants.

“I wanted to do something fun and happy yet unexpected,” says executive producer George Lucas. “It’s a story about love and how the most unlikely people fall in love. It’s about finding true beauty in someone’s soul regardless of how they look.”

Music producer Marius de Vries (“Moulin Rouge”) serves as both the musical director and composer, and chose the songs in collaboration with music supervisor Steven Gizicki, weaving together new versions of favorite songs from the last six decades—including songs made famous by artists ranging from Mickey & Sylvia and Elvis Presley to Kelly Clarkson, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. De Vries says he took Lucas’ lead when it came to the stylistic anchors of the film’s music. “Each of the kingdoms’ tribes is colored by a specific genre of pop music drawn from a very eclectic and diverse range of periods and styles, and woven into a narrative tapestry that still manages to feel coherent and emotionally logical.”

Director Gary Rydstrom says ‘American Graffiti’ was one of the inspirations for the movie. “But for ‘Strange Magic,’ we took the idea a step further,” he says. “Every song helped tell the story, but because the songs come with such history, they evoke emotional tugs on your heart strings.”

Adds Lucas, “I love telling stories with music. ‘Strange Magic’ may take a different approach than we did with ‘American Graffiti,’ but I had just as much fun. I love all kinds of music from classical to ethnic to contemporary. Since childhood, music has been an important part of my life.

“I chose Marius [de Vries] as the musical director because I loved what he did with ‘Moulin Rouge,'” Lucas continues. “And I’ve turned to Gary [Rydstrom] for many years for his talent in sound design. I’ve always thought that sound and music were just as important as the visuals in a film. It was an extraordinary experience to work with such a dynamic duo on such an intricate collection of songs and the complementary score.”

STRANGE MAGIC

Top 15 Scores/Soundtracks of 2014

POTA
Jerry Goldsmith, PLANET OF THE APES (1968) Nominee for Best Original Score for a Motion Picture

By Michelle McCue and Melissa Thompson

As 2014 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the best movie music from this past year. The backbone of any movie, audiences heard rocket engines roar, traveled through LEGO worlds and made spiritual connections all thanks to the musical vision of the composer.

In a mix that was soulful, haunting and fun, this year’s soundtracks covered a range of emotions, from light to dark, to atmospheric and assaultive.

Our Top 15 scores wouldn’t be complete without an honorable mention…

Michael Giacchino – DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

The story about the birth of a civilization and “restart” for the planet Earth was no more prevalent than with the emotional reality of composer Michael Giacchino’s score. Director Matt Reeves’ sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes found its musical language through the empathetic sounds of the apes in the environment Caesar has created for them.

1. Hans Zimmer – INTERSTELLAR

Making his fifth collaboration with filmmaker Christopher Nolan, composer Hans Zimmer steered clear of any musical expressions he’d explored in the past with the director, and invented a whole new palette for the film with the earthy yet elevating notes of an organ.

We went for a spectacular adventure on a journey into the universe and Zimmer’s score gave humanity’s mission to the stars a very primeval quality.

2. Alexandre Desplat – THE IMITATION GAME, GODZILLA and THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

Three of the best scores this year, six-time Academy Award Nominee Alexandre Desplat’s music was heard by audiences throughout 2014.

Desplat developed one of his most unusual scores for THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL – one played entirely without traditional orchestral instruments. Instead, he brought in a host of Central European instruments, including balalaikas and the cimbalom, a type of hammered dulcimer common to Eastern European gypsy music.

With THE IMITATION GAME, the composer took us to the Bletchley Park codebreaking centre and inside the Enigma machine. Desplat may see his first Oscar win with his beautiful score to the Alan Turing biopic.

Lastly with the great force of GODZILLA propelling the action and keeping the tension high, Desplat made a big sonic impact with the music. “I’ve never done a monster movie before, so coming to this with more than a hundred musicians—double brass, double horns—allowed me to open the frame of my imagination to another territory, and that’s very exciting.”

3. Jóhann Jóhannsson – THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

Filled with a charming score, composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s music for director James Marsh’s THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING was a mix of orchestral instruments and synthesized sounds giving the story of astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and Jane Wilde an ethereal, lovely sound.

4. Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor – GONE GIRL

David Fincher returned again to work with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (THE SOCIAL NETWORK, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) for the surging undertow to GONE GIRL.

Trent Reznor said, “In terms of the palette of sounds what’s unique on this one is that we used a more organic, less synthetic soundscape. We didn’t want it to feel too slick so we used a lot of interesting homemade equipment. There are moments where the rhythm is just me tapping on a wooden box so it feels repetitive but drifts around a bit like a human heartbeat.”

5. Antonio Sánchez – BIRDMAN or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance

Drums, cymbals, sticks, mallets and rods were used for the percussion heavy score in director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s BIRDMAN or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. Four-time Grammy Award winner and composer Antonio Sanchez effectively sets the pace and rhythm to convey Riggan Thomson’s (Michael Keaton) tonal tightrope between comedy and pathos, illusion and reality.

6. John Powell – HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

Composer John Powell’s fantastic soundtrack on HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 was filled with emotional triumphant orchestral pieces and a resounding chorus making it one of our favorites scores of the year.

7. Henry Jackman – BIG HERO 6, THE INTERVIEW and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Jackman had three big scores in 2014.

He composed a grandiose action score for North Korea’s favorite film – THE INTERVIEW. While building on his previous collaboration with Evan Golderberg and Seth Rogen on THIS IS THE END, Jackman scored the film as if it were a classic action-blockbuster to ground the film’s comedic moments. Jackman also created a score that celebrated the comic-book style action of BIG HERO 6, while weaving in the original music from American rock band Fall Out Boy.

But none was more epic than Jackman’s contemporary take on his superhero score for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Up next for Jackman is Kingsman: Secret Service and Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War.

8. Steven Price – FURY

Just as Price did on his Oscar-winning score for GRAVITY, where the sounds of radio waves were incorporated into the score, the British composer was able to find a distinctive voice for the music of FURY by using unusual and unconventional instruments in a fusion with the orchestral, choral and solo writing featured throughout. The daunting sounds put the audience inside the WWII tanks alongside Brad Pitt and his crew.

9. Marco Beltrami – THE HOMESMAN

Marco Beltrami’ s created a rustic sounding landscape in director Tommy Lee Jones’ THE HOMESMAN. Alongside his work on SNOWPIERCER, THE GIVER and THE NOVEMBER MAN in 2014, the Oscar-nominated composer’s score for THE HOMESMAN evoked the desolation of the homesteaders by drawing out the essence of the wind with an innovative wind piano that contained 175 feet long wires.

10. James Newton Howard – MALEFICENT and THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1

The sweeping emotions and volatile moods of THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 and MALEFICENT are evoked not only in the performances and visual designs but in the music, which once again is driven by an original orchestral score from eight time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard. The music for both films cover the whole breadth of experience from scenes of epic action to moments of epic heartache and intimate poignancy.

Howard also composed the score for Dan Gilroy’s NIGHTCRAWLER and Edward Zwick’s PAWN SACRIFICE.

11. Hanan Townshend – THE BETTER ANGELS

Directed by A.J. Edwards, executive produced by Terrence Malick with a beautiful score by Hanan Townshend (TO THE WONDER), THE BETTER ANGELS music took a poetic approach to Abraham Lincoln’s childhood in the harsh wilderness of Indiana.

12. EDGE OF TOMORROW – Christophe Beck

The composer created a score that captured the suspense, the action and the fun of Cage (Tom Cruise) and Rita’s (Emily Blunt) extraordinary journey in director Doug Liman’s awesome EDGE OF TOMORROW.

13. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY – Tyler Bates

Combining a rich orchestral score with familiar rock tunes, composer Tyler Bates’ score for director James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was one of the most popular of the year.

The soundtrack featured classic 1970s songs like Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling,” “I’m Not in Love” by 10cc, Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love,” and The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb.”

Bates also composed the score for the heart-pounding revenge thriller JOHN WICK starring Keanu Reeves.

14. A MOST VIOLENT YEAR – Alex Ebert

Another beautiful score from composer Alex Ebert (ALL IS LOST), the haunting music for director J.C. Chandor’s A MOST VIOLENT YEAR transported audiences into the treacherous yet stunning landscape of NYC, 1981. Ebert’s score uses piano, synth, and percussion to capture the tension and emotional pressure faced by Oscar Isaac’s Abel Morales, as he fights to protect his business and family.

Displaying his versatility, Ebert also recently composed the score for Disney’s animated short FEAST, which is currently being shown in theaters prior to BIG HERO 6.

15. THE LEGO MOVIE – Mark Mothersbaugh

Brick by Brick, composer Mark Mothersbaugh’s fun score for THE LEGO MOVIE

Filmgoers went along for the hilarious ride with Emmet, Wyldstyle, Vitruvius, Lord Business, Unikitty, Batman, Benny the Spaceman and Bad Cop/Good Cop and it truly was the most AWESOME time at a movie theater this year!
