NOSFERATU With Live Music by The Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra October 28th at Urban Chestnut

” Is this your wife? What a lovely throat!”

There’s nothing better than silent films accompanied by live music and I’d go as far as saying there’s nothing better than silent films accompanied by the Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra. And I’ll go even farther by saying that there’s nothing better than the 1922 silent spooker NOSFERATU accompanied by the Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra which is an event that will be taking place Wednesday night, October 28th at Urban Chestnut Brewing Company’s Midtown Brewery & Biergarten (3229 Washington Ave, St. Louis 63103). Doors open at 6pm and the movie unspools after dark!

ADMISSION IS FREE !!!

I’ve seen NOSFERATU with live music before and have even shown a 25-minute cut of the film at my old monthly Super-8 Movie Madness show with live keyboard accompaniment  (by the talented Linda Gurney), but seeing the full-length version  near Halloween on the big screen at Urban Chestnut with an original score performed the Rats and People is not something you want to miss.

nos4

The Rats and People is a treasure and St. Louis is lucky to have them here. I’ve seen them perform with silent films several times, often at The St. Louis International Film Festival, and usually at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium and it’s always a stunning good time at the movies. I’ve seen  Rats and People play along to some Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton at the SLIFF/KIDS film fest, and Harold Lloyd’s THE FRESHMAN. At last year’s St. Louis International Film Festival, I had the privilege of orally translating the Dutch subtitles of the 1912 version of IVANHOE while they played. The Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra will be accompanying the1927 collaboration THE UNKNOWN on November 13th as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival (read an article about that HERE), but this NOSFERATU event October 28th will show you how talented these musicians are and will be a great opportunity to see their unbeatable combination of Silent film and live music.

nos5

Released in 1922, NOSFERATU was essentially an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. Disguising the film under different names and details, this Dracula story portrays Count Orlock negotiating a move to Bremen in Germany  with realtor Thomas Hutter, and like the plagued-diseased rats of history, Count Orlock is a harbinger of death, bringing a great darkness with him in as he obsessively pursues the neck of Hutter’s wife and brings death and menace to the people of Bremen.
nos3
Masterfully directed by F W Murnau, NOSFERATU features timeless images of the nocturnal blood sucker gravitating through the shadows – the epitome being the iconic shot of the shadow ascending the stairs, as one with the dark  – an image that will send chills down your spine. Max Schreck’s Count Orlock grotesques all with his rat-like physical demeanor and long, bony fingers ending in talon-like nails – white-washed pale face – pointed ears – dark, sunken eyes – and hideous fangs centered in the very front of his mouth. Schrek’s Orlock takes his rightful place as one of the scariest movie monsters to grace celluloid. Count Orlock is a vampire you won’t be accustomed to seeing if you have been a regular viewer of the shirtless escapades present in the ‘Twilight’ films. NOSFERATU is not exactly heart-warming, buff or sexy. More, a pale stick insect which has just crawled out of a rat hole. Edward Cullen and family like transparent architecture, with their expensive, modern real estate. Nosferatu prefers his abode to be a beautifully haunting, Bavarian castle. It’s all so cool. Bram Stoker’s widow sued the producers of NOSFERATU and the resulting ruling ordered all copies to be destroyed. But, like the movie’s iconic monster, it seems the film was destined for immortality. At least one print survived and NOSFERATU has lived on as the best silent horror film in cinema history. Don’t miss this screening!

2014 Governors Awards, Arrivals

Production has begun in the Czech Republic on THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE, adapted from Diane Ackerman’s nonfiction book of the same name which was based on the diaries of Antonina Żabiński. Focus Features will release the film domestically; Universal Pictures International has distribution rights to the film in the U.K., France, Germany, Scandinavia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.

Two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain stars in the title role, as Antonina Żabiński. THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE director Niki Caro’s previous films include Whale Rider and North Country.

THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE dramatizes a real-life story of heroism. The time is 1939. The Warsaw Zoo flourishes under Jan’s stewardship and Antonina’s care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Golden Globe Award nominee Daniel Brühl of the upcoming Captain America: Civil War). The Żabińskis covertly begin working with the Resistance – and put into action plans to save the lives of hundreds from what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and her children at great risk.

The cast of THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE also includes Michael McElhatton (Game of Thrones); Iddo Goldberg (Defiance, The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler); Goran Kostic (In the Land of Blood and Honey); and Israeli actresses Shira Haas, who stars in Natalie Portman’s feature directorial debut A Tale of Love and Darkness, and Efrat Dor, acclaimed for her work in the television series Achat Efes Efes, Asfur, and Mermaids.

The screenplay adaptation is by Angela Workman (War Bride). The movie is being produced by Jeff Abberley, through his Scion Films; Kim Zubick and Diane Levin, who initiated the project; and Electric City Entertainment’s Jamie Patricof.

Academy Award nominee Suzie Davies (Mr. Turner) is the production designer on THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE; Andrij Parekh (Show Me a Hero) is the director of photography; and Bina Daigeler (Only Lovers Left Alive) is the film’s costume designer.

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW Midnights at The Tivoli the Next Two Weekends

rocky-header-560

They come wearing bustiers, corsets, and great gouts of eyeliner. And some women get into the act too! THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, the longest-running midnight and audience partici-(SAY IT!)-pation movie of them all, will play at Landmark’s Tivoli Theater in St. Louis this weekend at midnight (October 23rd and 24th) and the following weekend (October 30th and 31st) also at midnight . The Tivoli does this every year and the shows are often sell-outs, so get your tickets early! The Tivoli does a great job of making ROCKY HORROR an interactive movie experience with a live “Shadow Cast” known as The Samauri Electricians who perform scenes during the movie and of course the audience is encouraged to respond to the on-screen action as well. The street party always starts early as attendees dressed as Frank N. Furter, Riff Raff, Magenta, and the gang line up outside the Tivoli hours before showtime and We Are Movie Geeks will be there to snap pics and help get the audience riled up. The Tivoli encourages folks to attend in costume, but does not allow outside props, but they do sell an essential “prop bag” for only three dollars. The bag contains rice, toilet paper, Glow Sticks, Time Warp Fliers, Rubber Gloves, Noisemakers, Confetti, and everything you’ll need even if you’re a ROCKY HORROR “Virgin” experiencing the fun for the first time. I used to see ROCKY HORROR at the (now-defunct) Varsity theater down the street in the late 1970′s and not much has changed in 30+ years, my only observation being that this new generation of fans is even less inhibited and likes to show off more skin (not that I’m complaining – they’re in better shape!) We hope to see everyone at the Tivoli (6350 Delmar Boulevard) the next two weekends

Check back here at We Are Movie Geeks next week for some new photos of the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW Midnight show taking place this weekend

Admission is $10

Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford In New TRUTH Clips

Director James Vanderbilt’s TRUTH is in theaters today in NY and LA. (Trailer) The film will open in St. Louis on October 30th.

Sony Pictures Classics has released new clips from the docudrama starring Cate Blanchett as Mary Mapes and Robert Redford as Dan Rather.

The Washington Post is reporting that CBS has refused to run TV spots for the film.

CBS has denounced the movie, which opens Friday, as a disservice to the public and journalists.

Sony Pictures Classics sought a multi-million dollar ad buy to promote the film on Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show,” the “CBS Evening News,” ‘’CBS This Morning” and “60 Minutes,” but was turned down, said Sherri Callan, president of Callan Advertising, the company that places ads for Sony.

Instead, Sony is advertising on ABC, NBC, Fox and several cable networks. CBS, which confirmed the rejection, told Callan it was not comfortable accepting the ads because of inaccuracies and distortions in the movie, and that it would offend longtime CBS News employees.

On the morning of September 9, 2004, veteran CBS News producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) believed she had every reason to feel proud of a broadcast journalism job well done. By the end of the day, Mapes, CBS News, and the venerable CBS News anchor Dan Rather (Robert Redford) would be under harsh scrutiny.

The evening before, 60 Minutes II had aired an investigative report, produced by Mapes and reported on-air by Rather, that purported to reveal new evidence proving that President George W. Bush had possibly shirked his duty during his service as a Texas Air National Guard pilot from 1968 to 1974. The piece asserted that George W. Bush had not only exploited family connections and political privilege to avoid the Vietnam War by joining the Texas Air National Guard, but he had failed for many months to fulfill his most basic Guard obligation-showing up on base.

truth blanchett

Mapes and her team of researchers had scrambled under a tight deadline to pull together both on-air eyewitness testimony and newly-disclosed documents to make their case, and they felt confident that their story was solid. In the lead-up to the 2004 Bush v. Kerry presidential election, the “Bush-Guard” story could have had profound ramifications.

But within days after the story broke, George W. Bush’s military service record was no longer the focus of media and public scrutiny. Instead, it was 60 Minutes, Mapes, and Rather who were under question: the documents supporting their investigation were denounced as forgeries, and the 60 Minutes staff was accused of shoddy journalism or, perhaps worse, accused of being duped. Eventually, Mapes would lose her job and reputation. Dan Rather would step down prematurely as CBS News anchor.

How did attention end up focused on the journalists who questioned the official version of the story? How did the minutiae of document typefaces, line breaks, and superscripts become seemingly more important to the national discourse than the question of whether the President had failed to fulfill his military obligations?

Have journalistic integrity and independence been fundamentally altered in today’s newsrooms and boardrooms?

TRUTH is based on Mary Mapes’ memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power (2005, St. Martin’s Press).

CRIMSON PEAK – The Review

crimsonpeak2

Horror isn’t all about scares and frights. In fact, horror should be more associated with “fear.” That’s not always the case with most modern horror films. So often they are interested in producing thrills and cheap scares like making the audience jump from a cat popping out of a cupboard. Real fear is different. And fear in a good horror film isn’t always associated with the audience. In old, classic horror films, fear had more to do with the sense of fear felt by the main protagonist.

In many ways, Guillermo del Toro taps into this classic idea of fear in CRIMSON PEAK. We experience Edith’s fear (Mia Wasikowska), instead of del Toro engaging the audience. Of course, there are a few jumps along the way, but CRIMSON PEAK wants to be more of a gothic romance than what is typically shown at the multiplex these days. And you know what… that’s okay.

Edith Cushing (a nod, no doubt, to the late horror actor Peter Cushing) is an aspiring author who pines to be the next Mary Shelley. In the meantime, she spends her days working in her father’s office. That is until Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) walks in one afternoon. She’s immediately taken with him, and he seems just as smitten with her. The two quickly fall in love, even without her father’s blessing. Edith soon moves away to join Thomas and his sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain) in their family’s estate, Allerdale Hall. It is here where Edith begins to second guess her decision, as she comes in contact with strange sightings at night and experiences Lucille’s mysterious ways.

As to be expected with Guillermo del Toro, the art direction is the reason to see his films on the big screen. At this point, his films demand to be seen in theaters, and this is coming from someone who very much loathed PACIFIC RIM. The sumptuous lighting; the rich costumes; the extravagant set design; all of this amounts to a feast for the eyes that fans of the director will no doubt soak up. However, as of late, his stylish visuals seem to glisten and shine too much. It’s as if they look too crisp and produced, thus taking away from the classic feel he’s no doubt attempting to invoke.

Crimson-Peak-5

The gothic romance is a genre that can be hard to put your finger in. At times, I think of it as a heightened reality. Almost having a melodramatic quality. And yet, it doesn’t feel cheap like the word melodrama sounds. There’s a sophistication to how the story plays out and how the actors present it. It’s a style that may seem forced or silly to some, but if you’re familiar with films like THE INNOCENTS or Alfred Hitchcock’s REBECCA, you will see a sense of what del Toro is attempting to achieve.

For the most part, I would say he is successful. As per expected, Wasikowska and Hiddleston make a quaint and charming couple. You can practically see the romance flickering in their eyes. However, who rightfully steals the show is Jessica Chastain. Her wicked turn as a conniving sister is devilishly delicious, making you frightened to have her cold eyes come in contact with yours. That being said, can del Toro please stop trying to make Charlie Hunnam happen? He’s not good. Just please stop him.

One of the downfalls of the film is the lack of suspense. Every character’s motive or action is set up well before it happens. Every twist is as obvious as stepping on a creaking floorboard. But I guess that’s the point. Again, I feel the type of classic films that make up this genre are the same way. The film isn’t about the scares or the twists or even the ghosts – it’s about the sense of wonder and fear we are meant to experience through the eyes of our unknowing victim.

CRIMSON PEAK is an exercise in style. Much of this is a classic style, except when del Toro wants to “have his traditional ghost story and savor his gory kills too” – that’s a phrase, right? The gore at times will take you out of the film. As the film progresses, it makes sense to increase the “crimson,” if you will. But an extremely over the top kill towards the beginning of the film feels excessive for no reason, and then adding a scene in the morgue showing that body just makes it worse. The violence towards the finale didn’t bother me, but certain scenes that came earlier feel like a conflict of style.

Even though it’s being advertised as a straight-up ghost story, CRIMSON PEAK is more of a romance with a handful of ghosts thrown into the mix. Ghastly figures emerge from dark corners but never is the film truly about that. Del Toro has succeded at creating better lush visuals before. He has also succeeded at creating better ghost stories. Even more so, he has stirred human emotions more successfully (see PAN’S LABYRINTH, THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE, and CRONOS for examples of each of these). CRIMSON PEAK sees the accomplished Mexican director at his most nostalgic. The nostalgic love he has for the material might not translate entirely on-screen. However, at least del Toro has delivered a gothic horror film that is a feast for the eyes.

GOOSEBUMPS – The Review

goosebumps-1-620x400

GOOSEBUMPS is a sweet witch’s brew with dashes of FRIGHT NIGHT (1985), JUMANJI, and R.L. Stine’s original stories all mixed together. Once our young hero Zach (Dylan Minnette) suspects something awry is going on with the crabby neighbor next door, some troublesome snooping transpires and reveals that the neighbor is actually famous horror writer R.L. Stine (Jack Black). But that still doesn’t explain why he locks up his daughter Hannah (Odeya Rush) at night, and why all of his manuscripts are sitting locked on a shelf. The setup is similar to many of R.L. Stine’s stories, complete with the dorky, enthusiastic sidekick (played to a T by Ryan Lee). And if you know the author’s stories, then you know he has a knack for writing creepy characters. Unfortunately, Stine, the trio of kids, and the entire town, are going to come face-to-face with these famous monsters.

I try to avoid getting into too many personal stories in my reviews. Of course when you read any film critic, you are inviting yourself to peer inside the mind of the writer. Every review, opinion piece, or article is influenced by the writer’s previous experiences. That being said, R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series is one of the reasons why I’m the horror fan I am today. There are other films, books, and tv shows that formed the macabre mind I have today, but Goosebumps was one of the first. I read a lot as a kid. Many of the books that grabbed my attention were because of striking cover art – something that no doubt was a trigger for many kids. However, R.L. Stine’s books had more than just hair-raising covers that grabbed your attention. The pages inside breathed life into the colorful images. And I know I’m not the only kid that believed this. The Goosebumps series continues to grow in popularity over 20 years since its conception. I was 7 when the first book Welcome to Dead House was released, and watching the film GOOSEBUMPS on the big-screen gave me the same sense of wonder and excitement that I felt all those years ago.

GOOSEBUMPS perfectly captures the tone of R.L. Stine’s popular children’s stories, while incorporating a clever conceit so that all of the writer’s creations can emerge on-screen. The monsters and scares are handled in a way that is very similar to how Stein depicts them in the books. The shocks are mild enough without scaring the pants off kids. At times, director Rob Letterman has fun with this. One scene where ceramic gnomes begin popping up in random places around a kitchen is just the right amount of fun and frightful.

Jack Black is refreshingly restrained compared to his usual self. His usual shenanigans are downplayed, forcing him from being the center of attention like his personality customarily demands. How the film uses Black’s tendency towards over-the-top showmanship is through the main villain Slappy – a ventriloquist dummy also voiced by Black. His punny and comedic one-liners inject some dark humor into the film; especially since the other monsters don’t speak. Having Jack Black bring to life the author’s “alter-ego” is just another example of how director Rob Letterman understands and shows love for the source material.

All three of the kids play well off of one another. There’s a natural and carefree charm to their interactions, revealing kids that feel like kids. What many will find the most surprising about the film is its sense of humor. Much of this has to do with the comedic timing and delivery from these three leads. Of course, the monsters like the “Abominable Snowman of Pasadena” deliver some childish gags, but Darren Lemke’s screenplay plays perfectly to the talent of the young leads.

GOOSEBUMPS is nothing but fun. It’s filled with the perfect amount of chills and laughs that will appeal to families looking to get in the haunting holiday mood. Older horror fans should be aware that film is rated PG, and so the level of scares aren’t up to the level of some more extreme films. Some of the CGI monsters like the “Werewolf of Fever Swamp” aren’t as realistically rendered as I would have liked – thankfully, Slappy the dummy is brought to life through the use of a puppet – but that’s a minor complaint when you are having this much fun in a theater. GOOSEBUMPS is an entertaining romp that seems inspired by the work of Chris Columbus and Joe Dante. Ghouls, ghosts, and goblins of all sorts fill the screen, leaving fans of R.L. Stine (like this one) smiling.
