On Sunday, visitors to Disneyland Paris couldn’t believe their eyes when the cast and crew of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, the highly anticipated next chapter in the celebrated franchise, disembarked at Disneyland Paris for the European Premiere as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations.
Geoffrey Rush, Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem and Orlando Bloom
The event, which was inspired by the beloved Pirates of the Caribbean ride, was attended by Captain Jack Sparrow himself, Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is in theaters in 3D May 26, 2017.
Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES.
The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES also stars Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Golshifteh Farahani as the sea-witch Shansa, David Wenham as Scarfield, Stephen Graham as Scrum, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa.
Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg helm PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES with Jerry Bruckheimer producer. The executive producers are Mike Stenson, Chad Oman, Joe Caracciolo, Jr., Terry Rossio and Brigham Taylor. The story is by Jeff Nathanson and Terry Rossio, and Jeff Nathanson wrote the screenplay.

CHINATOWN screens Wednesday May 17th at The Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar in ‘The Loop’) as part of their ‘Classics in the Loop’ Crime & Noir film series. The movie starts at 7pm and admission is $7. It will be on The Tivoli’s big screen.
CHINATOWN (1974) is a seminal classic of ’70s cinema, with Jack Nicholson excellent as Jake Gittes, a mostly-ethical former cop-turned-private detective in 1930s Los Angeles who believes he’s been hired by the wife of the chief engineer of the Water and Power Department. He thinks her husband’s cheating on her but, as it turns out, she’s not the real Mrs. at all, and so propels Gittes into a tug-of-war between powerful ex-partners, with carnality and family secrets the key to unraveling the mystery. The Oscar-winning screenplay by Robert Towne is filled with complicated story threads and characters with checkered pasts–lots of fun, though it is somewhat unfair the script is always two steps ahead of the audience. However, CHINATOWN is so deftly orchestrated by director Roman Polanski, one becomes engrossed in the proceedings even while being bombarded with both clues and extraneous matter. Faye Dunaway’s performance, as the breathy, mysterious daughter of water-czar John Huston, walks a fine line between melodramatic and campy–still, she’s entirely in the spirit of the piece, and an interesting screen-match for Nicholson.
CHINATOWN is assured and entertaining; it pulls the viewer in without giving out enough information, though this lack of knowledge for our sake doesn’t hurt the returns. A cannier, guessing-game approach to the plot may have made the film more commercial (it was a modest box-office hit); however, this presentation, messy though it may be, is still absorbing.
Experiencing older Hollywood films like CHINATOWN on the big screen is like visiting a fine art museum – masters at work creating a living work of art that time only enhances in respect. A big thanks and shout-out to the Tivoli for this wonderful ‘Classics on the Loop’ series which ends next week with BLOOD SIMPLE. Attendance has been good, so keep your fingers crossed that they announce a new line-up of classics for the Fall.
Here’s the rest of the line-up for the ‘CLASSICS IN THE LOOP’ film series: May 24th – BLOOD SIMPLE – 1984

Three-time Academy Award nominee Johnny Depp is set to star in KING OF THE JUNGLE, a dark comedy to be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa from a script by Golden Globe and Emmy Award winners Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski that is based on a true story first published in Condé Nast’s Wired by Joshua Davis. The film is from Condé Nast Entertainment, Zaftig Films, MadRiver Pictures, and Epic Entertainment.
Based on the Wired magazine article “John McAfee’s Last Stand” by Joshua Davis, the film tells the wild true story of rogue tech magnate John McAfee, creator of the McAfee Antivirus software, who cashed-in his fortune, left civilization, and moved to the jungle in Belize. There, he set-up a Colonel Kurtz-like compound of guns, sex and madness. In the film, a Wired magazine investigator accepts what he thinks is a run-of-the-mill assignment to interview McAfee, but once he arrives in Belize, he finds himself pulled into McAfee’s escalating paranoia, slippery reality, and murder.
Depp can be seen later this month in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and his upcoming films include Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express, Miramax’s Labyrinth, and Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2.

Collapsing buildings, flipping cars, Sofia Boutella throwing Tom Cruise across a forest…watch THE MUMMY cast show off their insane stunt skills.
Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.
Universal Pictures announced today that The Mummy Day, inspired by the upcoming action-adventure, will launch at 12 P.M. PDT on Saturday, May 20.
Audiences of all ages are invited to visit the enormous 75-foot, 7-ton sarcophagus, which will be revealed at the Hollywood & Highland gateway in Los Angeles. As well, The Mummy star Tom Cruise will be joined on stage by his fellow co-stars and director Alex Kurtzman to invite participants to enjoy The Mummy VR Zero Gravity Stunt Experience and The Mummy Escape Game at the complex. The announcement was made today by Nick Carpou, President of Distribution, Universal.
THE MUMMY arrives in theaters, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D on June 9.
The largest single vertical structure ever assembled at the gateway, The Mummy sarcophagus measures 75 feet in height, 28 feet in width and weighs an astonishing 15,000 pounds. This extraordinary feat of engineering took two firms a total of eight weeks to construct, and scores of workers more than 160 hours to install. To prepare Princess Ahmanet’s sarcophagus for its revealing on The Mummy Day, the tomb required 18 wide-load tractor trailers to move all of the elements into place.
“The Mummy Day marks Universal and RealD’s way of inviting our guests to celebrate the massive and unexpected world of our film before it is released in theaters across the globe in a few weeks,” said Carpou. “Ahmanet’s tale marks a thrilling twist on a timeless legend, and I can’t wait to welcome all our fans—alongside Tom, Annabelle, Sofia, Jake and Alex—as this fearless warrior unleashes her power on today’s audiences.”
“The Mummy has been such a labor of love for the hundreds of cast and crew who have worked for the past few years preparing its big-screen launch,” said Kurtzman. “When we built Princess Ahmanet’s sarcophagus for production, we had no idea that a 15,000-pound replica of her ‘eternal’ resting place would one day find its home at the intersection of Hollywood & Highland. I can’t wait to celebrate her story with the fans on May 20.”
“The Mummy is cinematically spectacular with extraordinary action and visuals that are even more stunning and memorable in 3D,” said Travis Reid, President of Worldwide Cinema and Chief Operating Officer of RealD. “Erecting a 75-foot tall, 7-ton sarcophagus at one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations is the perfect way to launch this epic event. The 3D in The Mummy is mind-blowing, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience it on one of our more than 29,000 RealD-equipped screens worldwide.”
The Mummy Zero Gravity Stunt VR Experience goes behind the scenes with Cruise and Wallis as they perform the intense Zero G stunt as seen in The Mummy. This immersive VR experience is enhanced by Positron’s Voyager platform, featuring custom engineering and software, guided 360-degree motion control, head-tracked 3D audio and haptic integration—allowing guests to experience the world of The Mummy in a way they could only imagine.
In The Mummy Escape Game, an immersive live-action fan experience that also makes its world premiere at The Mummy Day, guests will be recruited as security guards and enter the sweeping story of The Mummy. They must solve interactive puzzles to save mankind from the revenge of an ancient princess who has awakened in current day. Ahmanet’s thirst for justice has spanned centuries, and players must outwit the fearless warrior to survive. Turning the storyline into reality by traveling through multiple rooms, up to 10 players work together within a 60-minute time limit to solve the puzzle and defeat the game.
Fans can tune-in and watch the revealing live on The Mummy official Facebook page and Fandango’s Facebook page.
Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson), Marwan Kenzari (The Promise) and Oscar winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator).
The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, and Sarah Bradshaw (Maleficent) produce alongside Kurtzman and Morgan. www.themummy.com
Producer Will Packer (Ride Along and Think Like a Man franchises, Almost Christmas) presents Girls Trip, a new comedy from director/producer Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man franchise, Barbershop: The Next Cut).

When four lifelong friends—Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah—travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there’s enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.
James Lopez, head of motion pictures for Will Packer Productions, and Preston Holmes, executive produce.
World-premiering at the 2017 Cannes International Film Festival, Focus Features will release THE BEGUILED in NY and LA June 23, 2017, expanding to more theaters on June 30, 2017
This looks good! The original 1971 version starred Clint Eastwood and was directed by Don Siegel, but it’s a very much a feminist story so it should be interesting to see it in the hands of women filmmakers.
Here’s the trailer:
THE BEGUILED is an atmospheric thriller from acclaimed writer/director Sofia Coppola. The story unfolds during the Civil War, at a Southern girls’ boarding school. Its sheltered young women take in an injured enemy soldier. As they provide refuge and tend to his wounds, the house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events. It stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Oona Laurence, Angourie Rice, Addison Riecke, and Emma Howard.
